Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 5th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Wednesday Meese. Happy International Women’s Day!

    28 here in Kingston, going up to 44.
    Puerto Rico

  2. Good morning. I got a lot of work done yesterday, even though I logged out early. Just feeling puny. Did get out for a very gentle walk. A meeting will steal an hour of my time today, ugh. Anyway, for now I’m eating breakfast & watching astronomy.

  3. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 46 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 70. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. The barely waning moon was visible in the western morning sky and there were stars over my mountains. It will be a great day, meteorologically.

    Anyone who didn’t think that Fox “News” and Tucker Carlson would take Marj’s Kevin’s footage and turn it into disinformation is ignorant. That Republican Senators are decrying it is the height of hypocrisy. Don’t pretend you are any different than the MAGAts who took over the House – they are your party, they are the result of your deal with tRump to cut taxes in exchange for looking past his grifting and outright criminality.

    In Arizona, a Republican State Senator from Tucson, helpfully named Wadsack as it is literally what she is, got her bill passed to allow a vote to amend the State Constitution to take self-governance away from Arizona’s large cities because they are too liberal. The good news is that she is up for re-election next year and if the referendum is put on the ballot, it will drive turnout in those aforementioned large cities and hopefully send her back under whatever rock she crawled out from under. The days when you could get something passed that only rural Arizonans want are gone – the cities are too big and too blue.

    I have a busy day today and I need to get to it. Last year I told myself that I was not going to worry about expenses as I would simply do what I needed to in order to get set up comfortably in my new home. Now it is time to look at every expense and make sure that they can be justified and see if a less costly alternative is available. So my spreadsheets are open and alternatives being researched.

    See all y’all later!

  4. It’s 48 supposedly going to 58 (it was supposed to go to 62 yesterday and got up to 72) and overcast. We got a bit over half inch of rain in the wee hours this morning and are supposed to get more tomorrow. The 2 spates of rain are of course bridged with cloudiness rather than sunshine. Welcome to climate change/collapse. sigh. We got 8.87 KWHs yesterday and will probably get less today. The m-t-d is 63 – not on track and losing ground. (The controlled burn the Forest Service did yesterday didn’t help any. Not just clouds but thick gray smoke most of the afternoon.)

    I don’t know much about the news except it’s not good. And the fact I saw this coming years back, and am actually surprised it took this long for the fascists to gain power, doesn’t help any. I haven’t checked in yet on folks but as of last night everybody was trucking on.

    Time to get started on my online chores. Healing Energy to those who need & accept it. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good morning, 32 and partly sunny outside my window today. Fortunately my tooth has stopped throbbing because the earliest appointment I could get with the oral surgeon is for Mar 30th. I’ve got a call into my regular dentist, but for some reason he was reluctant to extract the tooth so I may have to keep using ice, salt water rinses and soft food longer than I want to. I have pain meds but have to be careful re the interaction with coumadin so per usual it all gets complicated. Oh well, I’ll keep muddling along.
    I did get the essential desk tasks done yesterday so maybe I can plant a few seeds today. Best wishes to all.

  6. Thursday Meese. 31 here in Kingston going up to 45.

    • Thanks, Dee. Years ago I read about the hateful U.S. Navy training innocent dolphins to carry bombs underwater. Of course, this had a detrimental effect on the dolphins!

      I hate belonging to the human race, I really do, and also hate being part of the colonizer society. Don’t know what to do about it except vote, though.

  7. Good morning. Warm enough for a t-shirt for my before-work walk. I think it’s supposed to rain this weekend, but we are done with freezing weather. Maybe another few days I’ll need long sleeves, but barely that. So here I am in the office. Hope I make it through the day; I wanted to log off early yesterday but got a call back from someone I’d been trying to get for a couple of weeks. My 2 days at home, I got over 20 new library users set up.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 46 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 72. Mainly sunny skies today with a few clouds rolling in this afternoon. Last night the still-very-full-looking moon rose between the mountain peaks and was spectacular.

    In another example of “Everything Trump Touches Dies”, Fox “News” is scrambling to figure out how to spin that they literally lied to their viewers about TFG’s loss to keep them tuning in. I am not sure it matters, their core audience will never turn their TVs off – mainly because they are so old they can no longer muster the strength to push the buttons on their remote controls. It would be nice if Tucker Carlson’s star was tarnished but people with no moral compasses usually find a way to survive the ups and downs of popularity – his dedicated viewers will believe whatever lies he tells them.

    I need to get my day started so I will ignore the rest of the news.

    See all y’all later!

      Thanks for my first smile of the day, Jan!

  9. Good Thursday morning, Meese. It’s 35 F. in you-know-where, going up to 55 F. with much less wind. It’s already sunny and beautiful.

    Celebrated International Women’s Day by going to see a Woman Doctor. She looked Irish but had a surname that sounded Middle Eastern. I had been dreading the appointment, but she had such a great sense of humor that I ended up chuckling. After the treatment, however, I felt distinctly unwell (she said I would, and told me to take Tylenol or Motrin), so yesterday I just ate and slept.

    Our Goobernator will be on CNN’s town hall tonight. I shan’t watch it, people on Twitter will watch it and report. He’s SUCH a dumb cluck! He can’t govern Virginia—how does he propose to preside over an entire country, 2/3 of which does not agree with his views? The scumbag.

    I’ve got to hurry and get my haiku in—the contest ends on Monday. Today I lead my writers’ group. I was up at 4 for the usual reason (my pill didn’t work very well), and I have to go to the hairdresser this morning, so lawks, I’d better get on with things.

    Dee, how is your husband?

    Bfitz, wish I could send you some of our sunshine. Tomorrow it’s supposed to rain but I bet it won’t. We’re already two inches under normal for the year.

    Princesspat, hope the deer don’t eat any more of your hydrangea buds.

    Wishing a good day to all.

    • Thanks for asking Lady D – My husband is home and we are going to be able to get home visits from a physical therapist.

      • I’m so glad he’s home – AND that you can get home visits from the PT. Healing Energy to your household. {{{Dee}}}

      • Oh, good! Kaiser sent a nice young man to do PT for Dearly for a few weeks. He turned out to have been born in the U.K. and was a Chelsea fan. He and Dearly had fun talking about the teams. He doesn’t come any more, though.

        Glad your husband is home! It’s always better to be home with beloved wife and the animal companions!

  10. It’s 51 heading for 55 and overcast. The rain we were supposed to get in the wee hours started about half an hour ago. It’s supposed to last most of the day, alternating between downpour and drizzle. It’s drizzling at the moment. Yesterday we generated 3.7 KWHs. The m-t-d is 67 – not on track and getting further behind. At this point I don’t think it’s possible to reach 400 for the month, even if every single day from tomorrow on was bright and sunny. Which they won’t be.

    DK is still stepping up for michelewln – which is good because her Social Security isn’t much. She spent too many years as an unpaid (because family) caregiver. Anyway her latest crisis has been covered. Everybody else is pretty much same ol’ same ol’ as best I can tell. Including me. But nothing I complain and grumble about is as bad as the conditions my friends are in. So I try to hold the complaining and grumbling down. (Not always successful at that. sigh.)

    So the day begins. Off to twitter & spoutible & DK. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Good morning, 41 and cloudy outside my window today. I started taking antibiotics yesterday for the infection around my tooth and there is less swelling and throbbing this morning so I may be more comfortable today. Sure hope so! Best wishes to all.

  12. Puerto Rico

    • Good for the PR women! The WaPo carried an article this morning about how women around the world have been losing, rather than gaining, rights. Jeez.

  13. Good morning. Still gorgeous weather here, though it was too overcast to see the Space Station when it flew over this morning. 1.2 mi again, 9 running segments. In the office. My back hates my chair, it takes effort to put my shoulders against the back. Anyway, just got to make it to 4:45.

  14. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 52 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 73. Mainly sunny skies are in the forecast. We turned the furnace off a couple of days ago and hope to keep it off – the daytime highs and the sun warm us up enough so that the unit stays comfortable throughout the night.

    It looks like Montana Republicans have found a non-MAGAt to run against Jon Tester. That Tester has survived this long in a deep red state is quite remarkable – I remember when he first ran, it was a BHD in the blogosphere to get him elected and some blogging sites claimed that they got him elected. ::insert eyeroll here:: Well, back then the senior Senator was a Democrat, albeit a very corporate-beholden one, and Montana still had a Supreme Court that kept elections honest. When Tester got re-elected in 2018, it was a good year for Democrats. If Montana can succeed in keeping the MAGAts out of that race (Arizona also had several non-MAGAts running in their primary and chose Blake Masters), they can probably beat him. I hope that Biden’s guys are pulling out all the stops getting judges nominated and confirmed – 2023 and 2024 will be our last chance to balance the courts if the Senate flips red. Of course, if Biden loses, it makes no difference but assuming he gets re-elected, we will need the Senate to get judges confirmed.

    The CEO of Norfolk Southern said he’s sorry. Why, yes he is! A sorry excuse for a human being putting corporate profit over the lives of his employees and the lives in people in every town that his trains roll through.

    I have neglected a stack of notes that I really need to sort through. I have not looked at it since my trip nearly a month ago (when I last organized it) and I hope there are no bills or time sensitive projects that landed there and got buried.

    See all y’all later!

  15. It’s 37 heading for 58 today. It started sunny but by the time I’d fed cats, dealt with litterboxes, and did my 1st 10 minute session on the treadmill, it had clouded up again. Sigh. But I see a couple of patches of blue to the northwest so maybe it’ll clear off again. Yesterday we got 2 KWHs. The m-t-d at 69 is not only not on track for 400, it’s not on track for 300. At least it’s covering average daily use. So far.

    My mobile vet is going out of business. From the way he praised the email, I don’t think he’s happy about it. There is another, more expensive, mobile vet in the area. He gave me the name of the clinic so I guess I’ll contact them. This year the boys only need their annual exams. Nobody needs shots until next year. So as long as they stay healthy – and I remember to do it – I’ll have time to put money aside for what will be an expensive “normal” vet year. We shall see what we shall see.

    Far as I know, everybody’s still trucking along. Off to twitter & spoutible. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s 40 F. and raining off and on. Today will be a good day not to venture off campus.

    Was superbusy yesterday: woke up at 4 (bloody hell), hair appointment, grocery shopping, then a 2-hour session with the writers, then came home and collapsed. Dearly went out and got Burger King for dinner. That’s how tired I was, because we only do that once every three or four months.

    Was to have a meeting with one of the chief honchos at the quarterly at 10:30 but she has a cold, so we’re going to do telephone and email. Get this—she is actually willing to delay publication of the quarterly in order to get the Disability article the way the Powers want it. She is also going to give me LOTS of wordage! The article is already 835 words (the limit is usually 600), but I’m to get more, more, MORE, as the Pointer Sisters sang.

    Must submit my haiku this morning for the contest. It took me 8 tries before I was satisfied. That’s a poetic form alien to me. However, you can’t win a contest you haven’t entered, so I’ll submit and see what happens.

    I’m still in my dressing gown. Woke up at 4 a.m. (bloody hell), and was on the go the whole day until 4 p.m., at which time I came home, had tea, and collapsed. Slept until 7 a.m., very unusual for yrs truly.

    Well, I’d better get on with my day. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  17. Good morning, 40 and raining outside my window today. With the current dental issues I’ve got I’m in between the medical and dental professions and it’s hard to coordinate and manage the meds. I need to see my doc re the blood thinner meds, I think I need a different antibiotic, and getting that done will take most of today. And my damn tooth still hurts! So I’m grouchy, but will carry on. Best wishes to all.

  18. Saturday Meese Icy snow on the ground outside – we won’t get a whole lot but the dogs were not enthusiastic about going out in it to do their do. 31 right now going up to 44.

    Puerto Rico
    Powerful narrative from Nélari Figueroa Torres

    Whenever the Puerto Rican Day Parade played on our TV, I saw flashes of red, white, and blue that did not mean the United States but meant Puerto Rico. I didn’t understand the fascination behind a flag whose blue was changed to a darker hue so it would emulate the American flag, whose blue once meant sky; white, independence; and red, revolution.
    From 1948 to 1957 La Ley de la Mordaza prohibited Puerto Rican people from displaying or even owning our flag; it was seen as a sign of rebellion, of unacceptable Puerto Rican nationalism. I didn’t see the flag as anything more than a symbol of the fact that we’re still a colony. But now it’s signifying that we are allowed to be visible, to see each other.
    I still don’t want a souvenir from Puerto Rico. I don’t want to have to explain to my friends why I don’t want it because I don’t want to have left. I don’t want to take pictures of every Puerto Rican flag I see hanging on rear-view mirrors or poking out behind fences. I don’t want to put a Puerto Rican flag pin on my backpack.
    But I do.
