Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: April 16th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning, 41 and raining outside my window today. I have a lab appointment this morning and hope to be in the garden this afternoon. I bought 12 half priced hellebores yesterday so I can start to fill in the bare spots where the salal used to grow. I’ll add some ferns and hopefully it will look less like a clear cut and more like a garden. I still want to add the log feature but haven’t been able to wrestle them in place yet.

    Best wishes to all.

  2. Wednesday Meese. 36 going up to 57 here in Kingston. Feeling very angry and trying not to get totally depressed by the stupid hate and guns in this country

    Puerto Rico

    Please watch:

    “Carlos Muniz Varela (August 10, 1953 – April 28, 1979) was a Cuban resident of Puerto Rico who was murdered under suspicious circumstances in 1979. Varela was an outspoken backer of Puerto Rican independence movements”

  3. Good morning. Had a productive day yesterday, lots of new library users set up, and I got good comments on my “thank you” diary. Going to walk this morning, had to get my exercise in little bits throughout the day yesterday. Walk after astronomy.

  4. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s sunny and 44 F. in Ashburn today, going up to 75 F. We’re now 5 and 1/2 inches under normal rainfall for the year to date. The weather forecasters are peering hopefully into the charts for the weekend, saying perhaps we’ll get a half-inch of rain Saturday night. I like rain to fall during the day, when I can enjoy it.

    That said, I’m not looking forward to the rest of the week, what with the Supremes about to pronounce on the abortion pill and little Kevin refusing to lift the debt ceiling. When I look back to the “good old days,” I realize they were only good for het white people who abstained from sex.

    Made banana bran muffins with walnuts this morning. I wonder why the recipe calls for salt when the dominant flavors are fresh banana and molasses, with a little fillip of ground cloves and cinnamon? I put walnuts in, too. Gave some to the neighbors who aren’t diabetic. I think I’ll make peach bran muffins next time, I love peaches.

    Yesterday I got a great deal done. This morning I have a hair appointment and shopping. I seem to have joined a “Karate for Seniors” class starting Saturday morning. Landsakes and curly snakes!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. Hope y’all will wish ME a good day trying to write a short-short story called “The Drunken Ladies of the Garden Club” in 600 words!

    • Eeek! I forgot I need to make a haircut appointment. Thanks for the reminder.

      Fingers crossed that SCOTUS liars Burp Keggernaugh and Mrs. Jesse Barrett remember that they promised that the courts would respect the rights of the states related to abortion. We shall see.

    • {{{Diana}}} Good luck on your short story. Since I doubt Mrs. Feeley is in that Garden Club, the ladies are probably not drinking beer. LOL. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 54 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 77. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    I don’t blame Dominion for settling – it is always a crap shoot to go before a jury with a complicated issue and even if they won, they would be caught in appeals, likely all the way to the Supreme Court, for the next five years and racking up even more attorney fees. Take the money, hope that enough of the evidence that was released damages the reputation of Fox News (and stops them from defaming you again) and let the next set of plaintiffs take their turns. There are at least 4 other entities suing Fox including, from the sounds of it, Fox’s shareholders.

    I got up on time but went down a rabbithole related to Internet services billing and now I am seriously behind. I have to get ready for a remote session with a client in about 15 minutes.

    See all y’all later!

  6. It’s 64 heading for 80. It was sunny when I got up. It got over it. sigh. Yesterday we generated 16.8 KWHs. The m-t-d is 275.5 & still on track with room to spare. Which is good because according to the widget we’ve got more cloudy days than not the rest of the month. We shall see whether or not we make our target.

    Wretched night and very groggy morning. The clouds don’t help any. I’m contemplating going to the credit union for cash today. I’m also contemplating not. We’ll see how I feel later. I need to call my sister see how things are going. As far as I know everybody I follow is hanging in there.

    Thank heavens for routines. Even as groggy as I am, I know what I need to be doing over on twitter & spoutible. And I’m about to get started doing it. LOL. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  7. Good morning meese. It’s 43 going up to 64 today in Folsom. Sunny days are in the forecast with a high of 80 next Tuesday, not much else going on.

  8. Good morning, 44 and cloudy outside my window today. My good intentions for yesterday were waylaid by a long nap so I’ll just try to proceed today. I have been a day off all week so now that I know it’s Wed, not Thursday, I feel like I’ve got a bonus day :) Laundry first, then perhaps some time in the garden. Best wishes to all.

  9. Thursday Meese. 39 going up to 65 here in Kingston NY. Spent most of the day yesterday sleeping after I finished up my writing. Don’t know why I’m fatigued – don’t feel sick. Oh well.

    Puerto Rico

    Doubt this will go anywhere:

    • Regarding the Puerto Rico Status Act, sometimes bills are reintroduced to remind people that the problem still exists. As you know better than most, not many bother reporting on Puerto Rico’s issues and the Republican Party only cares about Puerto Rico voters that they can tell lies to in order to win their votes in Florida.

      I hope you get your energy back! Although, naps are not an bad thing. :)

    • Sis, your fatigue may be caused by sensitivity to tree pollen. Both Darling Niece and Adored Daughter have had to take to their beds during the height of tree pollen season. Daughter lives not far from Austin, so I think it’s cypress trees that do it to her. It’s some tree whose name begins with a “c,” anyway.

      Allergy meds and comfy beds may help.

      • Our local weather guys are saying that there are three trees that are making life miserable for people sensitive to pollen right now. So even in the desert, where there are not a lot of deciduous trees, pollen is a problem.

  10. Good morning. Warm, sticky weather ahead of rain and cold front. 72 degrees when I did my walk/run. None of my runs went up to a minute, but they were all over 30 seconds. Anyway, in the office, preparing to be around people all day.

  11. Good Thursday morning, Meese! Preparing to miss my second consecutive Resident Publications Committee meeting in a row. Last time it was my voice, this time it’s because I need to drive Dearly to his doctor appointment and back. I actually do still sound like Croaky Ribbett, the neighborhood frog. Tomorrow it will be 5 weeks since the procedure that deprived me of my ability to speak normally.

    Right now it’s 53 F. in Ashburn, going up to 87 F. Gorgeous, sunny day, actually.

    We have received permission to hold the Summer Solstice ritual in the courtyard, as well as the adjacent screened porch for Cakes and Ale afterwards. Little did I think, when we moved here more than 5 years ago, that I’d ever need to dig out my athame and consult my grimoire for rituals! Dining Services is just waiting for an answer on whether we can have the firepit lit from 8:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. I’ll bake a Sun King to share after the ritual and Betsy will bake a cake.

    Have three writing projects now–the short story, the blog about my sister, and the Litha ritual. Wish me luck!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  12. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 50 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 77. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Am I the only one who thinks that the reason to delay the SCOTUS decision on medical abortion until midnight Friday is so that the MAGAt justices can scurry back to their rats nests before they drop the hammer on women in America again? They are truly despicable. The maker of mifepristone is suing the FDA to block them from withdrawing approval of the drug regardless of what the “Supreme” Court says – I wonder how that would work, won’t the Supreme Court have to rule on that as well? It is when you see something like that that you realize the power that has been placed in the most corrupt court in generations – corruptly created by anti-democratic actions and the selling of favors and filled with corrupt people who lied to get confirmed and are bought and paid for by rich Republican donors. Goddess help us.

    I think the most hilarious part of the run up to the 2024 Republican Presidential Primary is the breathless announcements in the lazy press about candidates who did not get above 2% in any national poll in 2016 being “the one who can beat tRump.” The horse race news is simply horse manure when Chris Christie is mentioned as the non-DeSantis saviour of the Republican Party. Puh-lease!

    I was reading a story about the mediator who got the Dominion case settled and it was interesting to note that Dominion refused to even discuss it early on because they wanted the full depth and breadth of Fox’s perfidy to be exposed. When they were able to finally do court filings to get text messages and emails and videos and depositions entered as evidence – and people could sift through the evidence on their own – they were more willing to settle. So for people who said that Dominion was just in it for the money and is allowing Fox to destroy democracy, keep in mind that they are a corporation and have to make the best settlement they can and that they did manage to get a lot of damaging information into the public domain. Diehard Foxers won’t blink an eye but people who don’t watch a lot of cable news will likely form an opinion of the trustworthiness of that media outlet.

    I managed to get the two things done that I needed to get done before people started work and now I have to work on my to-do stack which has been steadily getting taller.

    See all y’all later!

  13. It’s 67 heading for 71, house-lights-on cloudy, and according to the widget it’s raining. It’s not. Yesterday we generated 8.2 KWHs, so losing ground. However the m-t-d at 283.79 is still on track, at least for another day or so, because of how much we generated during all the sunny days we’ve had this month. So that part’s good.

    I think I got 4 hours of sleep. I think. Very groggy. And my hands are most unhappy with the drop in temps and barometric pressure. I’ll manage. Talked to my sister Mary last night. My sister Alice has rented a 3-bedroom apartment in Denver and is taking care of Grant there. Family and friends are rallying around still. Alice can concentrate on Grant because food is coming in from all sides. The doctors are optimistic. Mostly anyway. They said he should start feeling better a few days after the chemo stopped and he is. If I’m calculating this right, he should start the next round of chemo on May 1st. I kinda hope so. When I consider it a “Beltane fire” that burns for 5 days, I’d say it’s a good omen.

    As slow as I’m being on the keyboard, I’d best get started with my twitter, spoutible, DK day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  14. Good morning meese. It’s 54 going up to 72 today, not too windy and sunny. Good weather for solar panel production. :)

  15. Good morning, 48 and cloudy outside my window today. I think the worst of the dental stuff is over now, and thankfully the TMJ pain is easing as well. I’ll be glad to get back to just the creaky knee complaints! Still haven’t done any actual work in the garden but my plans are becoming more real so I’ll get there soon. I have made good progress with the piles of laundry though, so this afternoon I’ll try to dent the ironing basket. Best wishes to all.

  16. Friday Meese. 45 going up to 75 and sunny here in Kingston NY.
    There were more Puerto Rico stories than usual.

    Puerto Rico

  17. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 57 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 84 degrees. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    McCarthy’s House is everything awful we expected it to be – the Title IX changes they passed show a complete lack of understanding of science and compassion. And to the surprise of no one, Joe Manchin says that President Biden should take a serious look at the McCarthy extortion attempt and that if he doesn’t, the default is his fault. Great. I hope that the White House has some good messaging to counter those lies. For one thing, make the Republicans pass their bill first – there is some doubt that it will – and then hang it around their necks like we hung the ACA repeal around the Ryan House in 2018 and “retired” a bunch of Republican members of Congress. We need a clean debt limit increase, period.

    Gosh it turns out that Florida targets Hispanics for tougher plea deals! Who would have expected that? Florida Latinx voters are big chumps, buying the Republican lies and voting to promote discrimination against themselves. Meh.

    I really need to go eyes forward in order to get a project finished this morning so that it arrives at people’s desks before the weekend.

    See all y’all later!

  18. Good morning. We had big thunderstorms last night, still so cloudy this morning I couldn’t see the Space Station as it went over. Bummer. Did my mile. Leaving early for packet pick up for the Ride. They’re having the dinner at some brewery way south, so I’m not going. I think I’ll go to the gym tomorrow and do 11 miles on a stationary bike, symbolically doing the Ride — without the hills and walking across the low-water crossings that will definitely be interesting tomorrow.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} what a great idea – doing the ride at the gym. Much safer for you while symbolically getting it done. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

  19. It’s 42 heading for 68 and sunny at the moment. Just because we aren’t going to have rain doesn’t mean we aren’t going to have clouds. But they aren’t between us and the sun right now. Yesterday we generated 8.5 KWHs. Again not on track for the day but the m-t-d at 292.6 is still on track for the month, if losing ground. Starting tomorrow we’re going to be cool and cloudy – looks pretty much through the end of April.

    Amelia/earicicle is having anxiety issues. Phone calls she needs to make, which are always triggering even when she isn’t looped through lebenty automated scripts that don’t answer her questions and never get her to a human being at all much less one who can. She canceled her dental appointment because she flat out couldn’t deal with anxiety AND pain. Fineena’s internet is down so if she doesn’t call me today, I’ll call her tomorrow to see what the doctor said at her appointment Wednesday. No news on anybody else.

    Hands and head are neither in top shape. Or even middle shape. But they’re functioning. So off to twitter and spoutible I go. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  20. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! Sunny and gorgeous here, 63 F. now, going up to 90 F. Can I wear shorts?

    Yesterday was beautiful too, but I didn’t get to go out in it. Spent the entire afternoon with Dearly at the doctor’s office, then drove him home through delightful (not) rush hour traffic.

    I FINALLY obtained some sort of answer from the family re the Memorial Dinner for my sister. Darling Niece and I agreed it would be better to hold it after Labor Day, because everyone will be on summer holidays at one time or another. So I’ll see how far in advance I can reserve a room.

    A week from today is my appointment at the ENT’s office. I hope they can help my voice. Today it is FIVE WEEKS since the operation and I still sound like Croaky McRibbett (I’ve decided I’m an Irish frog). Will have to ruin my afternoon by going to the grocery store, but I hope to make tomorrow a writing day.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. I plan to be asleep at midnight, so I’ll miss the lousy Supremes handing down their decision to make the abortion pills illegal. May the 169 curses of the Gambia Goo-Goos rain down upon the hapless head of Cleta Mitchell, who wants to suppress the vote of college kids.
