Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: April 30th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 70 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 95. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. My mom’s birthday is today – she was born in 1918 and passed on February 9th, 1999. Will always miss her.

    It’s 46 here in Kingston and raining – going up to 61.
    Puerto Rico

  3. Good morning. Got tea steeping, watching the news. Yesterday I made pasta salad for the next couple of weeks, with a lemony sauce. Today is just church, next week’s breakfast and I must get outside while we’re having this gorgeous weather.

  4. Note from WordPress Support yesterday:

    In early April, we experienced an unexpected suspension of our Twitter API access. This access is what powers Jetpack Social, which in turn helps you automatically share your blog posts to Twitter. Though the service was restored that same day, it turns out that there were bigger changes looming on the horizon.

    Twitter recently notified Automattic that it was dramatically changing the terms and pricing of the Twitter API. The cost increase is prohibitive for us to absorb without passing a significant price increase along to you, and we don’t see that as an option. We have attempted to negotiate a path forward, but haven’t been able to reach an agreement in time for Twitter’s May 1 cutoff.

    Given that, we have decided to discontinue using the Twitter API.

    For WordPress.com and Jetpack users, Twitter will no longer be part of Jetpack Social. However, we’re adding Instagram and Mastodon very soon. In the meantime, auto-sharing to Tumblr, Facebook, and LinkedIn still works as expected, and you can continue sharing your blog post links on Twitter manually through their app or desktop site.

    We use the JetPack add-in for some of the social media but mainly use the built-in widgets. I am going to assume that SNAP, the free automatic posting add-in that we use to tweet out our posts, will also not be willing to pay Melon’s extortion.

    As soon as WordPress updates JetPack to use Mastodon, I will set up a MotleyMoose Mastodon account, probably at newsie.social which seems to be a popular spot. I don’t think we would qualify for an account on one of the “news” instances but I will try that first.

    I noticed that NPR, after it was designated as “state run propaganda” by Melon, removed the Twitter share from its news stories. I am hoping that they add a Mastodon link to replace it. I can Toot from my Tusky app but not from my browser.

    • Thank you, Jan. Oh, gods, this is all too complicated. I’m addled enough as it is, showing up for a 10 a.m. class yesterday thinking it started at 10:30! has my Alzheimer’s kicked in already?

      • This is more of a heads up that “sharing” may be changing soon. It is very welcome that WordPress is planning to formalize Mastodon sharing. Now we need to see it on news sites. I see lots of sharing buttons for odd social media, time to mainstream Mastodon.

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind. Outside it is 62 F. and raining steadily in a most satisfactory manner. It began lightly, just before 7 a.m., and “they” say it will continue all day. Good. That should reduce the current rainfall deficit from 5 and 1/2 inches to something less awful. Gad, look how long California went without rain, and now it’s had so much precip. the residents have started panning for gold again. “There’s gold in them that hills!”

    So, Beltane Eve. I’ve written three Beltane stories in my life, one of them, the fanfic, with the title “It Always Rains on Beltane.” I’ll invite my writers to read the second story I wrote, although it will definitely not be required reading.

    That PA, who said my vocal cords were inflamed by the anesthetic, prescribed a course of prednisone-something or other. It tastes absolutely vile. As soon as I finish it (this is day 3 of 6) I’ll start on the hyaluronic acid I received from Amazon yesterday. It was a little pricey, but if it restores my voice it’ll be worth it.

    My first karate class was not too strenuous, but I really felt it last night! Unfortunately, I had to take two of the vile-tasting prednisone pills at bedtime, so I was awake a good bit of the night as well. Will have to make up for it today. Fortunately, I did all my shopping yesterday so I don’t have to go out at ALL.

    That’s enough from me, Moosekind! Hope you’re all having a wonderful day wherever you are!

  6. It’s 46 going to 66 and sunny. Yesterday we generated 13.5 KWHs bringing the m-t-d to 405. And with today’s sunshine looks like we’re going to make my goal of 420 and a bit more! Yay!

    I’m a bit better than yesterday. Even thought about doing my usual Sunday cleaning/vacuuming – until I’d fed the cats and dealt with multiple litter boxes. Oh well, I’m the only human around to notice. The cats don’t care. At least I didn’t have to start my day with a ginger ale/beer today.

    I haven’t checked in with folks yet. I’ll do so when I get over to twitter and Spoutible. Where I’m about to go. Also DK of course for Dee’s diary. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • {{{Diana}}} I’m glad you feel fine. Hopefully you’ll be able to talk again soon. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 56 and cloudy in my garden today so I’ll be outdoors soon. I made good progress yesterday, keeping my tasks small and finishing as I went along. I think that’s going to be my work plan for this summer, and with my son’s help for the tasks I can’t manage we should be ok. He can come by for a few hours every week and that will be better than waiting for the gardener found last year. She is busy, so a few hrs every 6 wks or so was all the time she had. For basic maintenance that’s enough, but I hope to actually finish some tasks as well as keep up with the ingoing work.

    Today I’m going to trim a few more plants around the upper patio and set up the covered area for outdoor dining. Once things are in place it’s easy to be more spontaneous re enjoying a meal outdoors. And with the table, seat cushions, etc in place it’s more comfortable for me to rest between tasks. So time to get busy! My best wishes to all.

  8. Monday Meese

    It’s still raining here in Kingston – weather says we won’t have a sunny day till next Saturday. I won’t complain because all this rain should help with our reservoir.

    In Puerto Rico – May 1 represents the day the US Navy decided to shut down its operations. Was glad to see some news articles.

    Rubén Berríos: “In Vieques, a political crisis was caused by the United States”
    The PIP president believes that the fighting on the island forced Washington to recognize the colonial status of Puerto Rico

  9. Good morning. Woke up at 3 something, stayed in bed till after 4 because that’s just crazy. Did my walk, 1.2 mi. Now I’m in the building, eating breakfast. Glad I have caffeine tablets, I dropped one in my tea. I keep getting distracted by all my U2 fan friends on twitter, talking about seeing B on his book tour, or about getting/not getting tickets to the Las Vegas shows. It’s nice to read about people being so happy.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Monday, the First Day of May

    It is 64 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 88. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. Yesterday we reached temperatures in the upper 90s and Phoenix hit 100 for the first time this year. These temperatures are not typical for this time of year and there will be some cooler days for at least the next week. May historical average is high of 91, low of 60.

    So New Hampshire is suggesting that Democrats will fare poorly in their state because of the end to the anachronistic First in the Nation primary which predicts nothing except how white people and people who flee states that collect taxes for essential services will vote. Meh. My guess is that 80% of New Hampshirites could not care less about FITN and those who are still butthurt in November 2024 over the changes deserve to have a permanent Sununu trampling their freedoms.

    My grand plans to do project work this weekend ran up against my stronger wish to do nothing – doing nothing won out. So today I will pay the price as the emails saying “where’s the update I requested?” arrive. I will see if I can quiet the noisiest ones by getting a few things done before they start work.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good Monday morning, Moosekind, and a merry Beltane to you all! Just enjoyed Jan’s post with the hovers. I’d like to think that basset is in Wiscasset, but that’s just wishful hoping.

    We have 52 F. in Ashburn this morning. All the rain this weekend reduced our rainfall deficit from 6 inches to 4! Yay! We’re in for a very chilly first week of the merry month. This morning we’re supposed to have weak sunshine, changing to showers later. Actually, it looks as if the opposite wants to happen.

    So far, the prednisone pills prescribed by the PA have given me insomnia and bad dreams when I do sleep. My voice, what there is of it, is still croaky.

    Was supposed to meet up with Darling Niece this morning, but great-nephew came down with a 101 F. temperature and sore throat yesterday, so she’s keeping him at home. Never mind, this gives me a chance to work on my stories.

    Croaky wishes you all a good day!

  12. Happy May Day to all! It’s 51 heading for 67 and sunny! A great start to May. We wrapped up April with the 1st day’s generation of just over 20 KWHs and the month at 425.9! It’s possible to generate 515 KWHs in May because we did it in ’18 but for the last 3 years May has been so cloudy we’ve generated less in May than in April. So the “be nice” goal is over 500, the “actually aiming for” goal is 465, and the “I’ll be happy with” goal is anything over the 425.9 we just did.

    I’m just about over this bug. Tummy’s not much more grungy than usual for me and the being cold is getting back into the normal range. Still have the lethargy though. Not helpful considering the amount of cat fluff everywhere – the cats are shedding now the warmer weather is getting here. Oh well. I’ll manage. As Diana says “First world problem”.

    Heading over to twitter & spoutible. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good morning, 53 and cloudy outside my window today. Another slow and sleepy morning, but once I do get moving I’ve got lots of choices re what to do next. I should tend to my desk work, but clipping some ivy will be the first task. It’s finally starting to brow again so now I can trim off the remaining straggly leaves and stems. It’s been an an going project and looks terrible now, but the new growth will soon cover the slope and fences again. And if we keep up with the fall pruning we shouldn’t have to do such a severe cutting back again. And that’s a worthy goal! Best wishes to all.

  14. Tuesday Meese. 43 going up to 5o with rain here in Kingston. Sad to read of the passing of Gordon Lightfoot

    Puerto Rico

    Justice for working people :: Not one step back

    • Hi, Sis, Gordon Lightfoot was one of my favorites. Loved “Rainy Day People,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” May he rest in peace.

      Poor old P.R. is going to broil today! We’re having a week out of the fridge. The temp. didn’t even get out of the 50’s yesterday.

  15. Good morning. Slept in, watching the news & eating breakfast. I put on a pot of beans for dinner for the week since I’m home today, I can check on them every couple of hours. Anyway, getting ready for wfh, hope the astronomy shows today are good.

  16. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! Cloudy and chilly again in Ashburn today, 47 F. and not getting out of the mid-50s. I’m sure we’ll look back with longing on this week when we start having Puerto Rico-type temperatures. We’re expecting the Flower Moon on Friday! Hope the clouds will part so I can see it.

    Uh, I didn’t move much yesterday so my weight was up this morning, but I DID get my story written. Today I have to work on a nonfiction story for the paper, about vegetarians. Will work on it right after breakfast.

    Looking forward to ending the wretched prednisone treatment tomorrow so I can start on my other remedy. I do want to go to a lecture today at 2 p.m. about neuropathy. Sometimes my feet give me such pain I don’t know where to look or what to do.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Diana, the weight being up could be from the prednisone. It unfortunately does have that “side effect”.

  17. It’s 45 heading for 69 today and sunny again. Yay! We started May off by generating 21.12 KWHs – something we haven’t done since last July. We shall see what we can do before the clouds move back in late Friday afternoon.

    I made the mistake of sitting down to check my email before getting on the treadmill for my 1st session of the day and now have a little black cat sleeping on my lap. LOL. Hopefully he’ll wake up by the time I finish my check in. Heaven knows with my hands cold and (mildly) shaky it takes me long enough to type it. At least the tummy bug is gone.

    As best I know everybody’s doing as they’ve been. My nephew started his 2nd round of chemo yesterday – finishes Friday – so prayers would be appreciated. ANNNND the little cat just hopped up. So. Treadmill. Breakfast. Twitter & Spoutible. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  18. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 72 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 86. Mainly sunny skies are in the forecast. Yesterday we had a lot of blowing dust and an air quality alert – today should be better.

    I can’t stay and read comments and will catch up later – I need to take my morning walk before it gets too hot.

    See all y’all later!
