Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 25th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 77 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 104. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 68 going up to 83 with rain here in Kingston.

Today is the Wise Latina’s Birthday

Will be celebrating with salsa in Black Music Sunday.

    Puerto Rico

  3. Good morning. Last night’s music diary was quite active. I’m also hosting next Saturday, theme is “patriotic but not rah-rah” (must think of a better way to put that) with the first couple of songs I’ve picked being Springsteen’s Born In The USA & Mellencamp’s Pink Houses (which I recently learned is about redlining). Anyway, this morning I have tea steeping, watching the news and eating breakfast.

  4. Good Sunday moaning, Moosekind! Today I’m moaning about the fall I suffered this morning. Yep, fell right off the folding stepladder while searching the upper pantry shelves for a bottle of Houses of Parliament Sauce. Luckily I fell on a highly cushioned part of my anatomy, but I also scraped the underside of my forearm. In a minute I’ll take a hot shower and see whether that helps.

Not the best start to what is otherwise a lovely golden summer day, the first we’ve seen in ages. Usually, it’s cloudy and dark when we wake up at the beastly hour of 5:30. Right now in Ashburn it’s 76 F., going up to all the eights. Dearly is not going to like what I’ve planned for dinner (vegan, Chinese Cold Sesame Noodles), but we have all next week to eat something more suited to his taste buds.

Yesterday we were convinced that Housekeeping was sending round a scout to assess our apartment for cleaning. Housekeeping is having a sale, so for $35 off we feel we can afford it. Accordingly, we rushed through our early morning routines so we could leave here in time to get to Virginia Kitchen with young Karl, eat breakfast, and then drop him off at home. We were back here well before the 10:30 deadline, but she never showed up until after 11. If asked to evaluate, I’m counting off for lateness. I’m such a bee-yatch.

I called my karate teacher to say that because of the presence of the grandson I would not be able to attend the class Saturday morning. He does not want me to drop out, especially since he started the Saturday morning class just for me. I must watch the videos on YouTube, because there certainly isn’t room to practice in this tiny, crammed flat. He says a lot of it is “mental.” Karl, besides knowing how to break boards with his bare hands and feet in Tae Kwon Do, also knows a little bit of aikido, which he’s learned from Younger Son.

Tomorrow I have a meeting with the people who want me to write a play, so today I must study plays that have already been written (I’m talking modern, 10-minute plays) and try to get a few more ideas.

Can’t believe the weather in the Southwest, the situation in Rusher, the idiocy of the Titan (although I do feel sorry for the boy, who did not want to go), and the fact that Saturday is July 1. As Elder Son’s birthday is July 2, I’d better get a card into the mail. All in all, last week was pretty good: saw one grandson on Tuesday, the other on Friday/Saturday, mailed some blogs off to my cousin in Austin, who likes my writing about family, and so on. Nora and DIL returned from West Virginia yesterday after a week of painting and patching houses for the needy. They’ll just have time to pack for their trip to Japan on July 10. Nora is exhibiting the usual horrible teenage attitude, so her parents feel she needs to see what life is like in a different place.

That’s enough from me. Hope all is well with everyone—wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  5. It’s 84 heading for 94, heat index 104, and sunny at the moment but rain forecast for this afternoon. I gave up and turned on the A/C this morning. It never cooled down enough last night/this morning to cool the house down. It was 80 inside when I finished my cleaning chores and the outside temps were at 82. Yeah, the compressor kicked on immediately. And hasn’t kicked off yet. sigh. We generated 18.8 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 412.7 is still on track. We’ll see what this afternoon’s rain/cloudiness does about that.

    Aji’s internet went down yesterday before she posted her usual income-related stuff. There wasn’t an email notice for her daily Patreon this morning so I assume it’s still down. So less for me to boost this morning, but a shipload of catching up when she gets it back. But there are still Dee’s roundup above and in her diary to do. And of course my needs thread. So I’d best get to it. Backed with salsa music today. ???? Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Monday Meese. 68 and muggy here in Kingston, going up to a rainy 79 with thunderstorms.

    Puerto Rico
Whatever happens in PR – the lights go out (Se fue la luz)
It gets hot, it rains, there’s a breeze, another rate increase

Don Pedro San Juan Route, a unique experience walking in the footsteps of Don Pedro Albizu Campos days after his birth #130. An honor and privilege to walk with people from all over PR for the VSJ on San Juan Day, telling stories about the life and legacy of Don Pedro Albizu Campos

  7. Good morning. Still ridiculously hot. Got my walking done, and even ran a little. In the office, hope we have full staff today, last week was…..unsustainable. Anyway, I’m here, I’ve walked, getting ready for the day.

  8. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! We woke up to an ugly-cloudy morning but that has now passed off and we have hazy sunshine. It’s 74 F. in Ashburn, with an expectation this afternoon of 90 F., hail, thunderstorms, wind, rain, and so on.

Time to bring the porch cushions in again. We enjoyed sitting out there and staring at the beautiful green woods yesterday. In a moment I’ll sit out there again and finish reading the book of plays I’m studying. Some of them are hilarious! Hope I can manage to write one: people have been after me since I moved here to do that. We shall see, as our bfitz says. My meeting is at 10:30 this morning.

I do wish Dearly didn’t have to go out this afternoon for his assessment with Physical Therapy. I’m afraid he’ll get stuck in horrible weather and traffic.

Yesterday Dearly caught a glimpse of Madame Vice President on TV and said, “No one likes her.” “You’ve been reading the Washington Post,” I said wearily. “The WaPo doesn’t like any Democrats, not the president, not anyone.” I hope the WaPo comes to a bad end.

So, we get a bit of breather as far as Virginia politics is concerned. We needn’t bestir ourselves until Labor Day. I wish, as Jan says, the news wasn’t All Orange, All the Time.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • The reason that “no one likes her”, regarding Kamala Harris, is because the captive corporate media is blindly repeating right-wing news outlets and promoting it as “true.” It began with CNN and their Kamala birther nonsense and then people deciding that her lack of support in the 2020 Presidential Primary was because of people didn’t like her. Hey, doodieheads, she did not have the money to mount a serious primary challenge to billionaires and berner cult members.

  9. It’s 64 heading for 91 (temp & heat index) – so actually cooler (ahem) today – and sunny. Yesterday we generated 18.95 KWHs and the m-t-d at 431 is on track and gaining ground with 5 production days left in the month.

I was able to turn off the A/C and open up late last night. The overnight got down to 64 – actually around 6 a.m. this morning. Which was good because I baked molasses spice muffin bread (went into the oven around 7, came out 7:25 – oven on 35 minutes) and made chocolate pudding. I can’t say I won’t have to cook for a while, but I won’t have to turn the oven on again for about 2 weeks. We will hope for another “cool” day when that happens.

    I need to close the house up in the hopes of not having to turn the A/C on again today. Maybe even tomorrow as we’ve another overnight in the low 60s. I’ll certainly have to by Wednesday though. Oh well. It’s summer. Meanwhile off to do my boosting chores. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • I did not even open windows here this morning – it was 78 degrees outside and 77 degrees inside when I got up.

      • Weather moving from west to east. That’s what I’ll be looking at on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Sigh. Yeah, the A/C will be on & I won’t be opening the windows either. Stay cool/safe as you can.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 91 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 106 – 113 at the airport. There are a few clouds, mainly over the mountains. Heat warning in effect until 8PM tomorrow (Tuesday).

All eyes will be on the Supreme Court this week as their session ends. Several important rulings are due. Last week’s stunner was Burp Keggernaugh saying that Texas and Louisiana don’t have standing to sue over federal border policies and putting states on notice that people venue shopping to find a judge willing to put a nationwide hold on a federal law may be getting put in their place. I hope they follow through on that threat. The era of tRump appointed judges in Texas upending federal legislation needs to end.

I spent hours yesterday and this morning dealing with new requirements for Microsoft cloud services. I think I have everything documented but I really have no energy to do more than that. I will pick it up tomorrow.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good morning, 64 and sunny in my garden today and that’s where I will soon. I’m close to finishing the project I started a few years ago, but it’s slow going now because I get so tired. It’s clear to me I won’t be starting a new project…..just keeping up with the normal ongoing work is all I can manage now. So with that reality in mind I’m looking for a small bench for that area so I have yet another resting spot :)

Yesterday was busy with a memorial service in the morning and then Ava’s dance recital in the afternoon. Five people from our New Years Eve group have now passed away, so the service was a sobering reminder that we are older too. And Ava is no longer a little girl in a fluffy tutu…..she is one of the older dancers now and it was a joy to watch her perform.

Time to climb into my garden clothes and get busy. As always, my best wishes to all.

  12. Tuesday Meese. 62 here in Kingston – raining – going up to 77. We had massive thunderstorms yesterday – more expected today.

    Puerto Rico

  13. Good morning. Got my walk done, less unpleasant than yesterday. Watching astronomy, getting ready for work.

  14. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! White clouds are hiding the pale blue sky this morning. Current temp. in Ashburner is 72 F., going up to 79 F. This morning the weather caster merrily explained that the “storms bypassed our area.” Duhh! After scaring all us oldsters to death with tornado warnings, forcing me to bring in the cushions from the porch and hide the plants from potential harm, “the storm bypassed us.” First-world problem, I realize. Meanwhile, we’re 9.5 inches under for rainfall for the year to date.

Well, now at least I can concentrate on the problem of White Gladis, the matriarch orca, training juvenile male killer whales to attack sailboats off the coast of Spain just for fun.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Housekeeping services people are here. I have a garden party to attend this morning and a Banned Books Week meeting this afternoon.

We had a good meeting yesterday about the play. We decided I would draft a play starring 9 characters based on a joke I wrote three years ago for April Fools’ Day. The joke was too long to make it into the bright yellow April Fools’ paper, but I’ve always liked it. These playlets will be enacted at Drama Club meetings, not before the entire community.

Should I complain about how much my feet hurt, or save that for another day? I’ll save it.

Wishing all at the Pond a good day!

  15. It’s 63 heading for 94 and sunny at the moment. Clouds are supposed to move in this afternoon and the heat index move up a bit with them. They’ll prevent the temps from dropping overnight and it’s A/C time again starting tomorrow. But not today. We generated 21.5 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 452.9 – still on track and gaining with 4 production days left in June.

The cats escaped when I was juggling a litterbox out the back door. I should know better. But they were in the other room and I thought I’d try the closer back door than go out the front and around. Those cats can move fast when they hear the back door being unlocked. It’s a lovely day outside, at least at the moment, and the twins are still out. Hopefully the noise of the garbage trucks will bring them to the back door if they’re not home sooner. I haven’t seen any of the serious fighters around the neighborhood for some time now so they really should be OK. I just worry.

    So much evil going on in the world, so many layers of it. We live in, and are dying from, a society that values power over all else and believes the only way to prove one has power is to abuse it. Colonizer culture. Patriarchy. Whatever. It’s evil, causes evil, and I purely do not know how it can be stopped considering that society has rigged it so that everybody else goes down first. sigh. But I do what I can. And I’d best be off doing it. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 79 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 104. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Yesterday at the Tucson airport it got to 113 which is 4 degrees shy of the all time high of 117. Excessive Heat Warning in effect until tonight at 8pm then it will just be “hot as usual.” The cutoff is 105. What I notice about the high temperatures is that breathing-in the super-heated air is unsatisfying – I don’t feel like I am getting a lot of oxygen from it. This morning on the deck it was 79 but a cooler breeze blows by if I go up to the railing. That felt satisfying. I am not complaining, by the way. We knew it was hot here and I can put up with 10 days of 110 degree weather as a trade-off for sub-zero temperatures, blizzards, and tornado outbreaks. Our region’s extreme weather events are heat and wildfires. I am not certain we have enough vegetation to sustain a wildfire leaping from the mountains to where I live. In any event, we are a 20 minute drive from the middle of the desert where there is literally nothing to burn. Staying there would be a challenge but the initial threat to life and limb could be mitigated.

I am watching SCOTUS this week for important rulings. Already they have ruled twice to clean up the mess they left last year by refusing to fix the extreme racial gerrymanders because of the Purcell “rule” which gave Republicans the right to flout the law because it was “too close to an election.” Now Alabama and Louisiana have to fix their districts, probably giving us a two to three seat pickup in the House. If everything stays the same we only need 5 seats. In reality, at least half of the 18 seats in Biden+ districts will switch back after the voters there realize that they elected people beholden to cranks and crackpots and not interested in or suited to govern. I am pretty confident that with fair elections, we will win back the House. The Senate is another question, though, with a lot of seats to defend. I am glad that Tim “there ain’t no racism” Scott is missing Senate votes to run for president – we are getting a lot of good federal judges confirmed because he is gone. We need to get them all confirmed before January 3, 2025 in case we lose the Senate.

I am still working through issues related to Microsoft’s authentication changes and I have some deferred accounting work that I can’t put off. So I better get back to it.

    See all y’all later!

  17. Good morning, 63 and partly sunny in my garden today. I need to do some housekeeping this morning and I’ll work in the garden this afternoon. My son went to Lowes with me yesterday so I now have what I need to finish prepping the soil and planting the plants I think the deer won’t eat. But my best purchase was a comfortable all weather chair so now I can sit and water everything and rest when I need to. Best wishes to all.

  18. Wednesday Meese. Another miserable rainy day here in Kingston with more thunderstorms on the way. Sigh.

    Puerto Rico

  19. Good morning. Still ridiculously hot — they’re calling the 99 degrees expected on July 4 “cooler”. Sigh. Watching astronomy, getting ready for work.
