Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: September 3rd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning. They’re going to start work on my building tomorrow so I had to move my plants, stands, etc. Nearly an hour of pretty intense exercise. Now I’m sitting on my couch, staring at the astronomy show. Today: work, and the last bits of outside cleanup.

  2. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! Right now it’s 76 F. inside, 78 F. outside, sunny, and with little air movement. On this Lenovo laptop, Microsoft’s beastly startup page isn’t bothering to give me the weather. Had to look on our thermometer and outside for the weather. Well, that’s how they did it in the old days.

Speaking of weather, yesterday Jay’s Wintry Mix Facebook page said it would be a very snowy winter. I needed a good laugh, so I had one. If we receive even one snowflake, it will be a miracle.

A hot breakfast has been cooked, much to Dearly’s delight, and consumed. After I’m ready for the day, I have to finish working on my blog, keep track of incoming essays from my writers, learn my lines (we have rehearsal tonight), and various other things. Yesterday Dearly drove me to Michael’s while he went inside Office Depot. Guess whom we saw leaving as we entered! Olga-from-the-Volga, a horrible Russian woman who’s one of the “Resident Life Counselors” here. She dislikes me intensely. I tried to book a room for the November Bio Book Club meeting. She said no, eet was not possyble to book the room for November 16. Then I asked for November 15, so she offered me Friday, November 17, which was the date I really wanted. HA!

Gods, that sounds so grade school At any rate, I’m energetic until proven otherwise. Plan to stay in today (walking inside the air-conditioned building rather than outside) because this afternoon it’s going to be 100 F.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  3. It’s 71 heading for 90, no heat index, and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 11.4 KWHs and the m-t-d at 60 is exactly on track for 360 and won’t make it if we don’t start getting 12 and above days. Sigh.

We were supposed to get rain last night. We didn’t. We got rumbly thunder and flickers of lightning between 1 & 3 and cooling temp, I opened the house at 2, but not a drop of rain.

Fineena’s still dealing with settling in – now has working laptop & wifi – but is worried about Henry. He’s not acting like a healthy dog. Not even a healthy older dog with achy hips. So there’s probably a vet visit in her near future.

    Basket’s back home. Everybody’s tired. Same ol’ same ol’ for most folks. I don’t need to close up the house just yet which is nice. Heading off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Wonder if Henry is suffering from Alzheimer’s? Apparently, some older dogs do. And Alzheimer’s sufferers, whether human or canine, don’t react well to a change of surroundings.

      • {{{Diana}}} That’s possible. He is about 14 and that’s old for an Airedale. Especially one who’s got heart worm damage. (That’s why she rescued him when he was a year old. They were going to put him down.) I hadn’t thought of that. Hopefully she can get him in with the vet soon and start with a physical. If that doesn’t show up anything, yeah. I guess she’ll need to follow that particular lead.

  4. Good morning, 58 and looks like rain outside my window today. Elsa came home tired from her puppy camp afternoon so we had a quiet evening, but she is re charged and ready to play this morning. We have been out but every dog toy has been zoomed around the house and she is looking for more fun.

I enjoyed my time in the garden yesterday. While Bri dug out an old planting and removed a large broken terracotta pot I went to the garden shop and brought some nice plants back here…and we planted them, yay! Now to see if the deer spray will keep them safe. Best wishes to all.

  5. Thursday Meese. 68 going up to 94 here in Kingston. The whole region is under a heat advisory.

    Puerto Rico

Meet Katherine Martínez Medina, who is facing criminal charges for defending her land and opposing gentrification on Vieques. The government of Puerto Rico always represses the young people who fight for a better country.

  6. Good morning. Did my mile, it’s disgusting outside — 83 degrees at 5:30am is just wrong. In the office, worried about the work on my building so I might try to leave early. Also slept really badly so I might try to leave early. But I’m here now, getting ready for the work day.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 73 degrees in Tucson with and expected daytime high of 100. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

I am going to take advantage of the cool weather and take my walk now. The news is atrocious anyway – I cannot CANNOT stand the horserace politics a year before the first vote in the general election is cast. Yes, Biden is old – so is tRump and Biden has likely taken better care of himself than McBloaty.

    See all y’all later!

  8. It’s 69, coming from a low of 62 and heading for a high of 93, and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 12.3 KWHs and the m-t-d at 73 is still on track for 360 and actually gained a hair.

I emailed the guy I get local apples from to see when the Jonathans would be ripe and he emailed back that they already are. I’ll be hitting the Market on Saturday. Masked up of course. Maybe double masked as I’ll probably be the only person I see wearing one.

Fineena is doing OK herself. In pain but she’s seeing her doctors next week and she’s still able to unpack a few bags and boxes a day. And clean up after Henry which is good because the diarrhea is getting worse. The vet was off yesterday but she said she was going to take Henry in today and camp out in their office until they could fit him in.

    Trying to boost on three platforms is tiring. To say the least. But I’m more or less committed. And while bluesky is where a lot of the action is moving from xitter, bluesky doesn’t have DMs and Spoutible does so I’m staying on both. And xitter as long as Dee does. LOL. So. I’ve made chocolate pudding for what may be the last time for “the season” and I’m off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  9. Good Thursday morning, Meese. It’s 85 F. and sunny out, going up to high 90s or even 100 F. As the Beatles sang:

    Well, tomorrow it may rain
But today I’ll follow the sun

I’m not even going to hope for rain tomorrow, having been disappointed so often. When it does rain, it’s a brief, powerful cloudburst rather than a soft, soaking, day-long rain, the kind that sinks into the ground and rejoices the aquifers.

Dearly Beloved had a very bad night of agony, no sleep at all, and is trying to get an afternoon appointment with the doctor. He’s had Aspercreme on his shoulder and taken a couple of Tylenols, so he’s now resting on the sofa. I have to get dressed and scuttle off to the store to get more Tylenol and other things.

Poor darling Daughter has caught Covid from her hubby, so they’re both at home, yelling at each other. She had just begun a new job last week, delivering food trays in a hospital! Apparently if she can keep the job for six months, by the time they move she can transfer to a hospital in Lenox, MA.

We had a rather fraught rehearsal last night, beginning with the guy who plays the Sheriff. He said, with justification, that this whole thing has evolved like an encroaching virus. He didn’t use those exact words, but we knew what he meant. This has metamorphosed from people sitting around a table reading their parts in the play to a massive thing with spotlights, music, backdrops, costumes, the works! He simply wanted to know WHO MADE THAT DECISION? Good point, I thought.

I freaked them out at one point by telling them I’ve an idea for another play, which I have. It will involve minimal male characters, lighting, and props. Meanwhile, I encountered the head of the Drama Club while I was walking to the gym, and he said we’d be doing my second play, “DNA Dilemma,” for the September Drama Club program. Also, did I tell y’all that he and I are going to be interviewed on the in-house TV show on September 29th?

I’m learning all kinds of new terms, “blocking,” “going off-book,” and so on. One day, I swear, I’ll write a one-act play that lasts half an hour instead of 15 minutes!

That’s enough about me, me, me! Wish I had princesspat here, my lavender just died. The mint is not happy either, but the ridiculous red, white, and blue petunias I bought before Memorial Day weekend are still alive and scenting the air! Amazing, considering my black thumb.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • Sadly, there is an uptick in COVID cases. If it were just an ordinary seasonal flu that had a lot of therapies in place to mitigate it (and a vaccine that has not been turned into a badge of MAGAttiness) it would be less worrisome. However, it can kill the unvaccinated and fill the hospital beds with the dying. There are no more COVID funds and already schools are finding out that without $ support, they are going to become ground zero for the next outbreak. Classrooms without teachers? Maybe that will solve the school bus driver shortage – go remote. It would suck to be raising children right now.

  10. Good morning, 57 and light clouds outside my window today. Elsa decided we should get up early this morning so she is walked, fed, and napped…..and I’m grouchy and sleepy! She is a sweet dog, just young and full of energy. She will go to the puppy camp again this afternoon so I’ll nap while she plays. Best wishes to all.

  11. Friday Meese. 65 going up to 88 with rain. It is really muggy here.

  12. Good morning. Another day of walking in dreadful heat. 81 degrees already. I had laryngitis all day yesterday, gave up at 4 & went home. I have Throat Coat tea with me, will see if that helps today. I sent out a ton of emails, so it’s not like I wasn’t productive yesterday, I just couldn’t help answer the phone. Anyway, just 8 more hours of work (maybe less), this this week is finally over.

    • Hope you’ll feel better soon, another! I simply can’t get Covid or anything like it, hence the masking. I hate having to go back to masks, but whatcha gonna do? I can’t afford to be ill, I must look after Dearly.

  13. Good Friday morning, Moosekind, and thank Goddess the weekend is here. It’s sunny with smears of white cloud across the blue, but will it stay that way? Yesterday, we were merrily melting in the strong sunlight and heat when suddenly the sky clouded over, it rained fiercely, thunder rumbled and lightning flashed, and the wind blew great sheets of rain across the woods! Some people swore they heard hail. I didn’t, being nearly stone-deaf.

Then, while I was being bored out of my mind by the speeches during the Progressives’ get-together, we had ANOTHER great gust of rain, wind, thunder, hail, the lot! This one didn’t last as long. I’ll tell you tomorrow if it made any difference, they haven’t sent the news to the paper yet.

Both meetings I attended yesterday were exceedingly dull. This morning I have to go out to buy beer for the Memorial Dinner on Sunday. We’ve decided to allow the men two beers each, while the rest of us will swig Sprite (the kids), Perrier (moi), and gingerale. Anita’s Is providing the Mexican dinner, that being my late sister’s favorite cuisine.

Dearly finally secured a 4 p.m. appointment with urgent care. The pears I bought to munch on are ripening so rapidly that I will make a pear dessert for tonight’s dinner. What with the late afternoon appointment and rush-hour traffic, it would be foolish to count on his getting home in time for dinner from one of the restaurants. I’ll think of something.

Wishing a good Friday to all at the Pond!

  14. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 75 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 102. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I will have to break from work and take my walk early to beat the heat. We are going to have a heat dome and likely record high temperatures tomorrow and Sunday (109 is not normal for September here, the average high is 95). I admit to being a bit restless – we got out for a hike last weekend and it felt good to be out in nature again. I am anxious for fall weather.

I have a few stories up in tabs to read a little later. I read with sadness about the new right-wing push to end no-fault divorce and the terrible outcome that will have for women who need to leave abusive marriages. Republicans will not rest until women become chattel again. I hope Republican women voters react to these new proposed laws the same way they did with the abortion bans – the end of Roe proves that it COULD HAPPEN and anyone who believes otherwise is ignorant.

Time to get my walking shoes on.

    See all y’all later!

  15. It’s 66 heading for 88 but not until the rain stops and so dark the PV system isn’t on. We generated 11.8 KWHs yesterday, not looking likely to do even that much today, and the m-t-d at 84.9 is on track for 360 but losing ground.

Fineena couldn’t get Henry to the vet yesterday. He was in surgery at the animal hospital all day and not in the office. She’s going to try again today. Although Henry’s doing a little better, he’s not doing good. She’s having depression right now. Both because she’s worried about Henry and because it’s taking so long to get everything unpacked and dealt with. She’s having trouble walking and can only manage a few boxes or bags a day. It’s still at the “looks endless” point. And part of it is what she’s not finding. Things that were thrown away, sometimes with but usually without her knowledge. Disabled, poor, toxic family – that makes a really lousy combination.

    As a whole lot of folks I know, some I’m doing my small best to help, disabled and poor is a bad enough combination. Adding the toxic family is a cyanide-laced cherry on top. sigh. Anyway, lousy night but I’m here. And had best get about my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Sad news. Fineena did get Henry in with the vet. Vet took a quick look and said “it’s time”. So. She’s in mourning. It’s the first time in over 20 years she’s been without a dog. She’s handling it as well as one can. Hold the Good Thoughts for her.

  17. Saturday Meese. 65 going up to 82 here in Kingston – looks like no thunderstorms today – they’ll be back tomorrow.

    • The cruelty of not allowing air conditioning to be installed in schools is outrageous! Rethugs and other members of the powerful are so hateful. It’s not as if children have any choice about attending school, they’re required by law to attend.

May karma deal with the cruel as they deserve.

  18. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 79 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 104. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Heat dome today and tomorrow. Standing on my deck this morning, I felt the last bit of 70s that we will see until Wednesday morning. No hikes this weekend!

I, for one, am glad to see Nancy Pelosi run for her House seat again. When Hakeem Jeffries becomes Speaker on January 3rd, 2025, he will need wise counsel and I cannot think of anyone better than Nancy Pelosi to provide that.

As for the rest of the news, I am not sure why people who think that Europe should simply be handed over to Putin are not laughed at when they show up in public. Except that dangerous idiocy came close to destroying democracy and is being given another crack at it in 2024.

The quiet of the morning when I can work on projects that I want to work on beckons.

    See all y’all later!
