Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?
…
NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

Wednesday Meese. Overslept which is something I rarely do. 50 and cloudy going up to 67 here in Kingston.
Puerto Rico
It’s 63 heading for 81 and sunny. We generated 7.9 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 76.2 ain’t great but it’s gainly. Slightly. Today’s the last of the 80s in the forecast. But thankfully not the last of the sun.
Rough night. I’m moving really slowly this morning. Oh well. I’ll get done what I want to get done and that’s all that counts. Any deadlines are my own. Fineena’s in a lot of physical pain, hoping her doctor gets back from Russia soon, and going through the normal grieving pain about her dogs. Y’all know the kind of thing. She cut off the bread crusts of her lunch sandwich to give to Henry and then remembered Henry’s not there to eat them. Not sure about anybody else as I haven’t checked in anywhere yet. So I’d best get to it. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
Hope you’ll feel better as the day wears on, bfitz!
I was just reading that the final nazification of x/Twitter is driving away journalists and professors who I would want to follow. I never open Twitter any longer, I only see the embedded tweets here and ther.
Could you send me a BlueSky invitation? The Internets suggest that existing users can send an invitation once a week: “Get a Bluesky Social Invite Code From an Existing User”. I think you have my email address if that is what they need. No one knows how long Bluesky will be able to sustain the single-server, no-monetization business model but it seems the most likely to survive the message-based social media wars since none of the big guys seem ready to embrace the Mastodon federated model.
Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …
It is 82 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 91. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It is going to get windy later as a front is poised to move through. This morning when I got up it was 69 degrees but it was already heating up by the time I got my walk in. I still hope to get my nap in on the patio before it gets uncomfortable – the wind will help.
I am ignoring the news. Apparently the coalition government that just took over in Israel includes a military guy whose last action in Gaza resulted in war crimes – for which he was never held to account, of course. Hamas apparently took advantage of political chaos for Israel and its allies. The Israelis can blame the Republicans and the Republicans can stop blaming one representative’s comments for the entire crisis. They are hardly pure in having members whose words are ill-chosen.
I have two things I need to do before I am done with work for the day.
See all y’all later!
Thursday Meese. 50 here in Kingston going up to 69.
Puerto Rico
OMG. I have a cousin who lives in Meriden. Wonder whether she knows about the Puerto Ricans and the silver industry.
I hope the Young Lords are successful, Sis.
Good morning, meeses! Thursday …
It is 64 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 82. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The moon is at 4.8% illumination and she was gone from the morning sky by the time I got up. New moon will be Saturday at 10:55am MST.
Republicans settled on the KKK guy as their speaker but did not bring the nomination to a vote because it turns out that they really don’t have consensus as they claimed to. It sounds like they do not want an open Speaker vote that will not make it on the first ballot because they are afraid that when Hakeem Jeffries is nominated by the Democrats, he may get enough crossover votes to make him Speaker. Ha! That would be delightful. It will also be delightful to see the Biden district Republicans defend their vote for a card-carrying member of the KKK and literally everything that the KKK stands for. An electoral gift. The other alternative is the guy who refused to stop the sexual abuse of student athletes in his care – a good chance to remind people of the Denny Hastert saga. Really, Republican Party leaders are damaged people and should never be put in charge of anything.
I am a little irritated by people who think that any discussion at all of the plight of the Palestinian people automatically means that you support Hamas and baby beheading. One should be able to separate the people in Gaza from the terrorist organization that does not represent them – those who don’t are willfully trying to justify genocide. Anyone who celebrates Hamas or justifies what they have done as part of a larger goal should be shunned but we should all care about what happens to the Palestinians.
I have some morning meetings that I need to prep for and best get to it.
See all y’all later!
Good morning. Back in the office. I did my walk — all 1.2 mi, and I ran 3 segments on each lap. Actually good to be in the office where I can’t obsess about the news. Though I am worried about my plants. The covered the windows in my building with plastic yesterday, we haven’t been told they’re painting but I moved some of my plants inside just in case.
Posted
Yes, it should. The idea that this colonizer bozo “discovered” a land where thousands of people had been living for thousands of years is part of our colonizer history, and should be discredited to the max.
Good Thursday morning, Meese. They’re turning off the electricity at 11:30, so I must hustle to get everything done, including making Dearly’s lunch, before it goes off. He has just left to go to the doctor. That’s our hobby! I’m going next week, just to keep the side up. Oh, and a week from today I’ll get the Covid vaccine, so that’s another joy.
Another gorgeous morning before cold and rain hit this weekend. Right now in Ashburn it’s 52 F., going up to 73 F. or something like that.
Spoke to fineena last night. It was funny, she called about 5:15 p.m., when I was on the shuttle bus from the clubhouse, traveling to our building with our dinner. When I answered my cell, she asked if she were speaking to her sister. “Yes, this is your twin sister,” I said clearly. Many of the passengers on the bus, whom I knew, stared. Fineena and I like to pretend we’re twins. I need all the sisters I can get, considering my real sister is no longer on this plane.
Got to rush! I have to get dressed and then put on my pirate costume. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
It’s 62 heading for 75 and mostly sunny, mostly. Yesterday we generated 7.68 KWHs, didn’t gain but didn’t lose either. At 83.96 for the m-t-d we are, barely, on track to edge out last year.
I had to go get milk before I could fix breakfast but that’s done now and I need to get about my boosting business. (After I deal with some cat barf.) Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
Hello, 65 and sunny in my garden today, but I’m indoors napping in my chair. The PT from home health care was here for her last visit so we’re on our own but Ron is much better so we’re ok. He can manage the stairs now so the rented bed can go away tomorrow and he no longer needs the walker…..welcome progress! And no more elective surgeries because we’re just to old for that now. I’ll be glad to get back to a more normal routine. As always, my best wishes to all.
Glad to hear the good news about Ron
{{{princesspat}}} Very good news about Ron’s progress. And getting back to as normal as seems possible these days. Healing Energy to your household. moar {{{HUGS}}}
Glad to hear your good news, princesspat, and three cheers for Ron and YOU, successfully getting through a difficult time.
I told Dearly to tell his dermatologist, the beautiful Wanda, to stop carving him up with Moh’s surgeries. He’s too old. Let him be, say I.
Friday Meese. 43 here in Kingston going up to 63.
Puerto Rico
“I have a 5 star team” (My note: “Pipo” Pierluisi is full of crap and so is his team)
Good morning, meeses! Friday …
It is 59 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 84. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. Very slight chance for rain over the weekend.
The KKK guy is dropping out of the Speaker’s race and the sexual predator enabler with an IQ of 10 wants everyone to rally around him. Good luck with that! The only solution is to make Hakeem Jeffries the speaker in a power sharing agreement with Republican Biden-district “moderates.” Let’s see if they care more about their country than they do their House seat (which is likely a one and done in any event.)
Gaza. JHC, the Israelis are telling Gazans to evacuate and they plan to level it. Where on earth are those people going to go?
I have several hot projects that need attention and have to finish up in order to run some errands this morning.
See all y’all later!
Great Goddess! The Israelis need to stop that! There’s nowhere for Gazans to go because the “loving” old countries surrounding them won’t let them in, for the most part. Jordan had a lot of Palestinians in it when we visited in 2001, but Jordan is such a poor country that half the people don’t have jobs anyway.
I used to get so furious editing reports for the World Bank about how hard Gazans tried to make a living, growing melons and vegetables on their little plots, and making clothes at home, and yet the Egyptians and Israelis wouldn’t let them cross the border to sell what they grew or made. Those poor people! And now they’re doomed.
Hamas does not represent the Gazans or even the Palestinians. They’re just a gang of thugs and murderers.
Good morning. Did my walk, it’s not a million degrees. Just chillin’ in the office before it’s time to work. I think tomorrow morning I’ll just view the eclipse from the parking lot of my complex. I’ve got eclipse glasses.
Good Friday morning, Moosekind. Today is our last lovely day before the rain begins tomorrow. Right now it’s 55 F. and sunny in Ashburn, going up to Goddess knows what—it was 73 F. yesterday.
Dearly had a terrible night and said that at one point he nearly stopped breathing. Luckily he had the right stuff at hand and was able to regain his ability to breathe. He had the ‘flu jab AND the Covid jab yesterday. I told him this was a mistake, but in common with most men, he never listens to women. This morning he feels so terrible that he didn’t even turn on the telly, which we usually do for an hour, and didn’t want any breakfast except coffee. He’s asleep now, poor darling.
Was too preoccupied to notice the weather much because it was the afternoon of my writers’ group meeting. Before everyone arrived, I went around the room opening all the blinds. There was so much sunlight that we didn’t need our flashlights or battery-powered lanterns after they turned the electricity off. I put on my pirate outfit, with the tricorne hat, long black cloak (so versatile, that cloak), the eye patch, and the fake moustache. Tried to twirl the moustache but the dam’ thing fell off. One writer came dressed as a Witch, another as a bumblebee, and one of the men wore a natty straw hat, white shirt with garters on the sleeves, and a string tie. Naturally, we took photographs.
Everyone seemed to enjoy Cheryl’s cookies, many of which were decorated like pumpkins or ghosts or simply had “Boo!” written across them. I tried one of them but they were deathly sweet. We had a most spirited discussion of our essays, and agreed that several should go into the anthology we plan to produce. People liked my story, “Ghost Bark,” so I’ll post it when I get a chance.
What else…I was looking at the photo “Earth Rise” on the Net last night, and reflecting how we’re destroying Gaia, our beautiful home planet. The astronaut Scott Anders, who was brought up as a Roman Catholic, said the sight severely undercut his religious beliefs, to the point where he started hanging out with Richard Dawkins, the well-known atheist. I weep for Gaia. We are going to destroy her 7 billion years before the universe collapses in on itself.
Well, enough of that. There’s a glorious view of the red and gold woods this Friday morning. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
It’s 63 heading for 68, definitely overcast although the promised rain is just mist. The PV is system is on, barely, but so are the lights in here. Yesterday we generated 8.9 KWHs and the m-t-d at 92.9 gained a little bit. Which we will lose today if it doesn’t clear off by noon.
Joker’s bringing Harriet to visit Fineena this weekend and so Fineena was a lot happier and more energetic when I talked to her last night than she has been lately. Harriet got her first “haircut” yesterday and Joker sent a photo to Fineena (who’s been sharing it around). Definitely a beautiful and classic Airedale. Aji’s power went down yesterday about midday and it wasn’t up by the time I logged off. Hopefully it’s back up & I can boost yesterday’s stuff this morning. I haven’t heard from anybody else.
Well, Autumn is definitely here even if we can’t call it Winter yet. A fire and “Mexican” soup this evening. LOL. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
Good morning, 47 and looking like fall outside my window today. Thanks to all for your kind words re our health saga. Your support has helped me cope. I am very relieved that Ron’s hip is healing and that he is starting to regain stamina, but it is clear we need to make some lifestyle changes. One of the first being easier dinner cooking so we have more restful evenings. I’ve kept simple food going but now that his appetite is returning Ron is wanting to cook again. He made dinner last night, but he got way to tired so he sees the need to adjust. Getting old is one adjustment after another! Best wishes to all.
Dear princesspat, can you subscribe to one of the “dinner kit” services such as Blue Apron or Bitter Root or something like that? My sister-in-law in Australia, who was looking after her husband unaided, found dinner kits to be very useful. She was so tired after caring for him all day, that she just didn’t have the energy to shop and chop. She was delighted with the service.
Saturday Meese. 47 here in Kingston going up to 54 with rain. Paid my school/property taxes this morning – sigh – close to 4K. I won’t complain – public education is critical to have.
Am trying very hard to stay out of the I/P wars at orange – with the exception of posting toons in APR.
Puerto Rico
Good morning. Watching the local news because I can’t deal with more war news. But then there’s the stupid special session, trying to ram through a school voucher plan…. They’ve only painted part of my walkway, and wow they need to do a second coat, so I don’t want to take my plants back outside. Anyway, Saturday…..
It’s 49 heading for 61 and cloudy. According to the widget it’ll be cloudy all day. sigh. Just as we’d gotten back on track to beat out last year. Yesterday we generated 8.4 KWHs with 101.3 as the m-t-d.
I hate the evil, binary, genocidal, colonizer, fascist culture in all its forms, shapes, and iterations. Holding the children – ALL the children – in The Light.
Off to do my boosting chores and hope some good comes of it. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
Bfitz, your remarks remind me of this poem by Victor Hugo. I can’t remember the title, but the first two stanzas are as follows:
Wish I could remember the rest of it, but that’s all I can recall offhand.
{{{Diana}}} Our society pays such lip service to caring for children but treats them a disposable burdens or cheap labor or (goddess help them) sex toys. “Collateral damage” of no significance in our wars. We, as a culture, are an evil people.
Good rainy Saturday moaning, Meese! Why are we moaning? Well, after a week of glorious October weather, it decided to rain for the Fall Festival that we’re having today. Ordinarily I’d be ecstatic at the thought of a rainy, stay-at-home day, but the staff have worked so hard to make this a fun day, and now they’ve had to move it indoors. Currently it’s 55 F. in Ashburn and won’t get out of the 60s before sundown.
I just contributed a cake for the Cake Walk and, after viewing what others brought, decided no way am I participating in the walk itself. UGH! At noonish I’ll pick up a couple of hot dogs for lunch. I hope I can pick up one for Dearly, who is really in no shape to walk anywhere. He feels considerably better this morning, thank Hygeia: ate pancakes with maple syrup for breakfast, and before that brought me early morning tea in bed.
October 14 is the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, when William the Conqueror’s Norman troops shot an arrow through the eye of Harold Godwinson, the Saxon king. The last time we were at Hastings I saw that someone had sent flowers in memory of the slain Saxon king. “What a lot of weirdos there are in the world,” I thought, momentarily forgetting that I’m one of them—after all, who orders a birthday cake for Shakespeare every year? Yep!
I’m not much interested in face painting or pumpkin painting at the Fall Festival, so I’ll probably catch up on correspondence today. I do want to see that movie about Richard III, but might have to go to the 7 p.m. showing. I was awake for more than an hour in the middle of the night.
Like anotherdemocrat, I just can’t take the TV news. It’s too much.
Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.
