Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 15th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 73 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 95. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 46 here in Kingston,NY going up to 58

    No major stories in our media about the island – however a story went viral on social media about 2 Puerto Ricans in CT – and their white accusers

  3. Good morning. The eclipse yesterday was awesome. I’m going to get a filter for my phone before April so I can take pictures of that one. Eating breakfast & watching the local news while my tea steeps. I might actually need long sleeves to walk in the morning. My windows are still covered for the painters, but I’ve got my door open to let in the cool air.

    • Good for seeing the eclipse, and yay for cooler temperatures!

      Naturally, as residents of the foggy-minded DMV (District, Maryland, and Virginia), we were not permitted to see the eclipse. After a week of spectacular weather, Saturday chose to be cold, rainy, and windy. The Fall Festival had to be moved indoors, but it was fun anyway.

  4. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! Right now we have 51 F. in Ashburn. It’s sunny with little white wisps of cloud here and there, squatting on the blue sky, and a wind is blowing the leaves off the trees.

    Hope to get some writing done today. Later I have to traipse to the store to get tonight’s dinner. I don’t remember the last time I roasted a chicken myself. Glad to report that Dearly is EATING again and seems to have recovered from those twin jabs on Thursday. He’s looking forward to the footbore game at 1 p.m.—why? They always lose.

    Yesterday I did manage to write a long letter to my sister-in-law in Oz. She’s good about writing. Need to write a letter to my friend at Greenspring.

    Forty years ago today I stopped smoking! That’s probably why I’m still alive. Oh, guess what, the radiology peeps wrote to say that my mammary glands are “not very dense.” Wow! Every year now they’ve written, “Your breasts are very dense,” leaving me to wonder fretfully whether I should hire a tutor for them, in the hope of making them less “dense” and more educated. Now I don’t have to bother.

    What else…at the Fall Festival yesterday I donated a cake to the cakewalk, had my face painted like Wonder Woman with added glitter, and decorated a small pumpkin. Also bought three raffle tickets for a quilt created by the members of the quilting society. I’m so envious of bfitz’s quilt! There is nothing more American, I think. It’s an art form. I remember seeing my beloved Grandma sitting in a rocking chair, working with little squares of discarded garments to make a quilt. She had 10 children. My late mother said that when Grandma wanted to relax, she ironed (!) or sewed.

    Anyway, I need to compose interview questions for the members of the Knitting Club here. I’m interviewing them on Wednesday. I especially want to find out about the “knitted knockers” in the hope of shocking the more staid residents here.

    That’s enough from me. Hope everyone at the Pond will have a wonderful day!

  5. It’s 51 going to 57 overcast and heavy mist. I’m hoping it’ll clear off by noon but I’m not banking on it. We generated 3.9 KWHs yesterday. For a wonder the m-t-d at 105 is still on track to beat last year. Unless the sun does come out around noon it won’t be tomorrow. (And of course I didn’t get to see the eclipse.)

    Fineena is still dealing with a lot of pain (and waiting for her doctor to get back from Russia) but is really looking forward to her visit with Harriet (& Joker) today. She found both her winter coats yesterday so that’s a YAY!

    My computer was wonky this morning. I had to reboot – and then do a hard reboot because it got hung up on “restarting” for over 20 minutes. But it seems to be OK now. I hope. I got all my Sunday housecleaning chores done and now had best get on with my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Monday Meese. 46 going up to 59 with rain here in Kingston. Have a doc appointment so I have to go out in weather I don’t like. Sigh.

    Puerto Rico

  7. Good morning. Chilly, by our standards — 51 degrees. I needed long sleeves for my walk. Austin City Limits Fest is over, and now come the Formula 1 crowds. Trying to avoid the news as much as possible.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 68 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 97. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It is going to be hot all week but at least we will still have nice morning lows. We can cool down the apartment overnight and not need air conditioning until later morning. I have not had a chance to watch the weather guys so I am not sure what is causing this unusual heat wave. I am waiting for consistent temperatures in the morning so that I can start riding my bicycle. Last year I got it rehabbed including new tires after it had been sitting in my garage for a few years unused (flat tire, too busy to get it fixed, then it was forgotten). We got the bikes fixed in May, just as the weather was making it too hot to ride. In any event, next week should be better.

    I am trying – but failing – to ignore several stories. Republicans in Disarray is going to become a problem soon and the notion that they will settle on Gym Jordan is alarming. He will shut down the government forever – it is part of the Freedom Caca’s plan. I am concerned that Israel will flatten Gaza and kill 2 million Palestinians in order to punish Hamas. Already humanitarian aid is being targeted for Israelis and not Palestinians – both are victims of Hamas. Thank goodness that Chef José Andrés is feeding everyone.

    Busy morning here as Mondays generally are. I am behind because my antivirus software needed to update and restart and that delayed my day. I am not sure why it doesn’t just update when I am sleeping! In any event, time to turn towards work.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s 48 F. in olde Ashburne, and what a glorious blue-and-gold day! Now I remember why we married in October. When I looked outside at the woods and the golden leaves in the sunlight, I was immediately reminded of this poem:

    When the Frost is on the Punkin’

    BY JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY

    When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock,
    And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin’ turkey-cock,
    And the clackin’ of the guineys, and the cluckin’ of the hens,
    And the rooster’s hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;
    O, it’s then’s the times a feller is a-feelin’ at his best,
    With the risin’ sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,
    As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,
    When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

    They’s something kindo’ harty-like about the atmusfere
    When the heat of summer’s over and the coolin’ fall is here—
    Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees,
    And the mumble of the hummin’-birds and buzzin’ of the bees;
    But the air’s so appetizin’; and the landscape through the haze
    Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days
    Is a pictur’ that no painter has the colorin’ to mock—
    When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.

    The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,
    And the raspin’ of the tangled leaves, as golden as the morn;
    The stubble in the furries—-kindo’ lonesome-like, but still
    A-preachin’ sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill;

    Feel fairly sure you don’t have time to read the whole poem, but I like it. My father would whirl in his grave if he knew I liked it, but there it is, Paw—I just do.

    This will be a difficult, wearying day: writing a letter for Dearly, fighting with the bank, delivering a gray puffa jacket to Lost and Found in the Clubhouse, and that’s just the morning. In the afternoon, must practice with my sign (it’s heavy), watch the video of our last rehearsal (Louise says the first 10 minutes is nothing but her screaming at Raoul, the videographer), and be at practice promptly at 7. We’re having the first of the combined practices three nights in a row. I think I’ll stay to see “The Long Trip” (not written by a resident) and “Cowman,” written by the head of the Drama Club.

    Other than that, I can’t BEAR to think of or look at the news. And some batarde in the USA murdered a little six-year-old boy because he was Palestinian. Murder is horrifying anyway, but innocent children…!

    Off to work. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  10. It was 39 when I got up, 44 now, and heading for 64 today. Back to the 70s tomorrow. At least it’s sunny. Yesterday we generated 5.4 KWHs and the m-t-d at 110.69 is not quite on track to beat last year.

    Fineena was too sleepy to talk last night so we’ll catch up tonight. Putting my focus as close as I can. Friends. My needs list. Boosting Aji’s and other small businesses. Dee’s various roundups here and on Black Kos. If I paid any kind of serious attention to what’s going on in the world I’d be sick. Goddess shield the Palestinians on Gaza (yes, of course the Israelis too). But then colonizer culture has always approved of genocide when the people are brown and/or not Christian. (And actually, some of the folks on Gaza ARE Christians.)

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Good morning, 68 and raining in Bellingham today. Ron went to the PT clinic early this morning, then to the lab so our day started early. He is doing much better now, so relieved! I baked a tasty gf gingerbread yesterday so am going to have a slice now because I didn’t have time for breakfast earlier. Best wishes to all.

  12. Good morning. It’s 59 degrees currently in Folsom.
    I finally was able to write a diary about aitchdee’s passing. It’ll post at 6:00 am PDT. I’ll share the link once it posts.

  13. Tuesday Meese. 48 here in Kingston, going up to 61.
    Had a hard time trying to find any stories about Puerto Rico, other than this one – headlines were dominated by this story – and have been since she went missing

    Did find this:

    The background to this story:

    extreme weather continues

    and the daily reminder from Shelly

  14. Good morning. It is actually cold — in the 40s, so I’m taking my walk later today. So glad I have these 2 wfh days. Watching the local news, then astronomy, then it’ll be time to make calls. The national & international news is just too much.

    • Y’all know I can’t comment on DK. But this is what I’d have put if I could.

      {{{basket}}} It’s a lovely memorial celebrating her – I wish I could comment. I remember her love of animals. And screening real estate ads for that house with the pool. And yard with grass and trees, a house with good natural lights – and no carpets. She was – is – a wonderful person.

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 70 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 93. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. Yesterday it hit 100 again after they PROMISED no more triple digits. Harumph!

    I am not sure why Biden announced he is going into a war zone in advance of going there. If Hamas wants to make a big splash, what better way than to send a barrage of missile attacks during his visit? Or maybe they have gone to ground and have no firepower at this point in time. I certainly hope someone is paying attention. If Biden can’t run in 2024, we are toast – even if we survive the primary wars, there is no one on the current Democratic Party bench who can win enough independent votes to win the swing states.

    The news headlines suggest that Gym Jordan’s speakership will come up for a vote today (Tuesday). I hope that “moderate” Republicans and/or at least Biden district Republicans refuse to put a literal anarchist into the Speakership. I saw a compromise floated where Democrats would vote for a non-Freedom Caca Republican if they got assurances that they would have the ability to introduce legislation in the House. It sounds like that would simply require a 50-50 split on the committee that reviews and releases legislation (Rules Committee?). In any event, the House needs a Speaker to bring legislation to the floor and vote on it. I hope the Republicans don’t just “settle” on Jordan and take their chances. They would be ignoring everything he has said and done in his entire political career if they embraced his current lies.

    I got some work done this morning but not enough. I am trying to pick up the threads of a bug-fix project I have been working on for two years, setting it aside when I got busy. I now need to get it done but it has taken hours to get back to the point where I can recreate the problem so that I can attempt to fix it. I have to break for some errands but hope to be able to get back into it when I get back.

    See all y’all later!

  16. It’s 39 heading for 70 and sunny. We got just under 8 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d 118.6 is just a hair under on track to outdo last year.

    Sinusitis and a contact-dermatitis rash on my forearms (no idea where or what) but otherwise I’m OK. Fineena’s in pain but she had a nice visit with Harriet and Joker on Sunday and is doing better enough mentally/emotionally to be getting more protein in her shopping cart and in her diet (she’s diabetic and has been eating way too many carbs). Aji’s lupus is in overdrive (and has been for months) to the point she’s in both chronic & acute pain & her joints aren’t working well (causing difficulty in walking, holding anything, typing – the lot). Best I know everyone one else is trucking along.

    I got 3 birthday cards yesterday (Friday’s my birthday – also Aji’s, Bobby’s, and Kamala Harris’s) which was very nice. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
