Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 15th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good Tuesday afternoon, Meese! ‘Tis a gray and gloomy afternoon, current temp. 57 F. in Ashburn. Have had a nightmare day, first getting lost trying to get to the doctor’s office, then an afternoon of errands that took MUCH longer than expected.

Went to see the gastroenterologist this morning. She’s beautiful. She knows my primary doctor, thank Goddess, and said she’d fix it with her about changing the date of my checkup with Dr. K., so Dr. C. can go ahead and do the endoscopy.

Here’s the worst part: I am now to be limited to half a cup of tea per day and no coffee at ALL! The last time I tried to go without coffee (because of a stupid no-sugar diet), I not only suffered a headache, but a massive body ache as well, such as I had never experienced before.

I will now have to DuckDuckGo frantically to find out whether there is a caffeineless hot drink as comforting as coffee and tea. I do not want lemonade or cider, as those contain sugar.

Rotten news, but it’s a first-world problem, hardly the same as being in Gaza or the Israeli border. Dr. C. also prescribed some sort of pill, which I haven’t picked up yet. If it has the same effect that Nexium did years ago, I’m going to throw it out the window.

Fer Gawd’s sake, they’re not REALLY going to elect Gym as Speaker, are they? Tell me they’re not!

Rehearsal again tonight and tomorrow night. Yesterday it had been a week since our last rehearsal and some of us, including yrs truly, kinda flubbed our lines. Well, we’ll just have to work harder. At least the people in my play had all memorized the script. The actors in the other two plays were still reading from their scripts.

I’m learning a lot about writing plays, and it’s thrilling! I’m learning I can’t use big words or ornate words because people have trouble articulating them. Small, simple words are better. I’m even learning a bit about lights. I didn’t know the world of theater was like this, it’s enthralling.

Must keep an eye on the potatoes, even though they already have eyes. We’re having loaded baked potatoes and salad for dinner. I have to meet the others at 6:45 in Great Oak Clubhouse to discuss our entrances and exits on stage.

Hope everyone at the Pond has had a good day!

  3. Good morning. Watching astronomy & getting ready for work. Allergies are killing me but I’m going to try to get outside today.

  4. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind. We have 49 F. in Ashburn, with cirrus clouds trying to hide a blue October sky. My darling petunias are still waiving their red, white, and blue blossoms patriotically, in spite of the cold. They have even retained their scent! Color me amazed and delighted.

More sad news—my niece Alex’s dog died in her arms at 4 a.m. today. My heart aches for Alex. To her (she’s 39) that dog was like a child. Chancleta was a sweet little thing, although I never could figure out what breed she was.

Rehearsal went better last night except for the bus driver character, who was suffering from a bad headache and blanked out on some of his lines again, and the guy who plays the sheriff saying “Hasta la vista” as he left the stage. That is NOT in the script, and when the director asked me about it I replied that I did not want my play associated in any way with the actor who played “The Terminator.”

Dearly brought me a much smaller cup of tea this morning, which I guiltily drank and enjoyed. I am now enjoying half a cup of coffee to avert the massive headache and body ache that going cold turkey would bring. Lawks, I’ve had to say goodbye to “sex ‘n’ drugs and rock ‘n’ roll,” booze, and ciggies—now I’ve got to say goodbye to coffee and tea? Tell you what, I’ll put up with this nonsense until the operation, after which I plan to drink as much tea and coffee as I want.

All this is very first world, of course. I wish there were something I could do about Gaza and Ukraine, but there isn’t. All these wars and the penis-shaped missiles and rockets deployed in them, are driven by MEN. What can we do about it? Nothing. As the joke goes, “We sent one man to the moon. Why can’t we send them all?”

But I would amend that to sending only the maddened, patriarchal, religious fanatics. As we know, not all men are hateful.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  5. Good morning, 53 and raining outside my window today. RonK has PT this morning so our son will take him and I’ll drive him home. Not driving is hard for him so we are trying to make it as easy as possible. His hip is recovering on schedule but the physical reality of a major surgery at age 82 means he needs some more healing time.

Our old house and garden needs attention too, so the current task is repairing a back step that has lifted due to a tree growing bigger than we thought it would when we planted it 30+ years ago. The trunk is now in the way of the step so we have removed the concrete tread and the supporting boards and in order to level the step again our son will cut the boards to conform to the tree because nature is more powerful than wood and concrete. We can usually find a solution but old houses do require some interesting repairs. Best wishes to all.

  6. We started at 49, currently 66 and heading for 76. Sunny. Yesterday we generated 7.85 KWHs and the m-t-d at 126.5 is on track to beat out last year’s October production.

    Social Security payday for me. Been to the credit union for cash, the Co-op for supplements and household stuff, Harp’s grocery store for eggs and oatmeal (and a few other things). Need to get going on my boosting. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  7. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It was 65 degrees in Tucson when I got up but it is now 84 on its way up to 93. Mostly sunny skies. I got my walk in before it reached 80 but just barely.

Thank goddess that Gym Jordan lost on Tuesday and, it appears, has lost today was well. It sounds like they plan to bring a resolution to the floor to make Patrick McHenry Speaker Pro Tempore and give him the power to bring legislation to the floor. If he agreed to do that, it will require Democratic votes and, we hope, an ironclad agreement to power share on the committees that send bills to the floor. We will not survive a Jordan Speakership, period, so any other option has to be better than that. I hope I am right. :(

I have to get back to my to-do list. I am at crunch time on two projects and can’t lose the head of steam I built up.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Thursday Meese. 45 going up to 65 here in Kingston.
    Puerto Rico

    • Sis, that is really exciting about the cave art discovered in Puerto Rico, and the fact that it goes so far back! Cave art is a subject that interests me deeply right now. Good for PR, exploring its culture and history despite the oppression of us colonizers.

  9. Good morning. Back downtown. Did my walk. If I remember right, they will use the visitor’s garage for parking for F1 people tomorrow, guess I’ll walk in the garage where I park. And definitely in the garage, people up at dawn for their event aren’t going to be super attentive drivers. Happy Friday Eve — oooh, I just remembered that I’m leaving work early tomorrow to see a film at the IMAX about the Hubble telescope!

  10. Good Thursday morning, Moosekind! It’s a beautiful blue-and-gold October day, with the trees slowly turning red in places. Right now it’s 47 F. in Ashburn . Yesterday was really ugly, just dark and overcast the whole time. It might reach 70 F. today, but who cares?

Just returned from being vaxxed with the Covid vacc. The staff is dressed in Halloween costumes. They do try to make things fun. The nurses wore regular garb, however.

This almost-no-caffeine thing is driving me cray-cray. I’m not going to start taking that medicine until Saturday, because if the side effects are anything like what I suspect they’ll be, it will be disastrous. I need to have a pedi tomorrow because my toenails are trying to poke through my tennis shoes. (As a little old lady, I am obliged to wear them.)

I like BlueSky, but a couple of things bother me. Just because I follow someone doesn’t mean I want to receive 30 posts a day from the person! Yikes! Also, the news seems old. Don’t know why.

Just received a telephone call about handing out flyers at my usual site, Dominion Trail Elementary School, on Election Day. Dear Goddess, I hope so much the Dems will turn out and crush the Rethugs. I hate to think what Virginia will become if the Rethugs win.

That’s enough from me this morning! I’m going to totter off to bed for a nap. Woke up at 5:10, drank only half a cup of coffee and half a cup of tea, so now ready to play Sleeping Ugly.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • This re BlueSky: “Just because I follow someone doesn’t mean I want to receive 30 posts a day from the person! Yikes!”

It can fill a timeline when a person arrives online! I have chosen to mute a few of my follows. You can also choose Discover from the timeline choice and get more from followers of followers which can help.

I don’t find the news old but I am following a lot of the news sites which by definition is going to get me breaking news. I saw that NPR has a bsky.app account after being trashed by Melon – it is nice to see their stories again.

  11. It was 49 when I got up, 51 now, heading for 74 and sunny. Yesterday we generated 7.79 KWHs and the m-t-d at 134.28 is still on track to beat last year. Warming up the next couple of days. I won’t be having a fire in the evening for what looks like a full week.

Yesterday I got a wonderful surprise in the mail. Slight early birthday present – a large (4″ long, 2″ wide) pendant from Wings that basket & earicicle commissioned. They and Aji worked out kind of what was wanted – something to honor my cats – Wings created something to honor Cat and thus all the cats I have and ever have had. Everybody knows that it’s going to mostly reside on my altar and so it’s a piece designed for that as well as to be worn. The next time I see my son I’ll ask him to do a photo or three of it and post them so folks can see what it looks like. I’m having a very nice birthday week this year. Fitting I guess as I wrap up the 8th cycle of 9s.

Fineena is in pain, depressed, and her left foot & ankle are still swollen but otherwise she’s doing OK. She’s hoping her doctor is back from Russia because the rest of that clinic seem to be standard American medical people. Namely they don’t listen to the patient and if their pet theory about what is wrong gets ruled out, then they stop looking for what actually IS wrong. sigh.

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  12. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 70 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 97. Sunny skies are in the forecast. They are expecting 100 tomorrow which would set a record for latest 100 degree day in a year. The previous record was Monday and before that another October day in 2020. So at least now I have some context – it is not impossible to have triple digits this time of year and becoming more likely. The good news is that since the sun is not shining as long it is not impacting our cooldown, we are still seeing 60s in the morning.

Will Gym Jordan demand another vote today? Will anyone call him out for his bullying tactics and his incitement of death threats to Republican members of Congress who won’t get behind his Speakership bid? One Republican from Arizona has already said she won’t run for re-election. If she cares about her country, she should declare herself an Independent and caucus with the Democrats. If she is joined by 4 of the Republicans from New York state who are dead men walking, we have Speaker Jeffries. I am still not sure how Speaker Pro-Tempore Patrick McHenry would work out and what happens if someone chooses to vacate him but I do hope something is settled that allows for the Appropriations process to continue so the government stays funded past November 17th. What a ghastly mess!

I have been having some fairly productive mornings lately and need another couple in order to make some real progress on my must-do list (as opposed to my to-do list which is a whole ‘nother thing). I don’t know if it is the cool mornings which allow me to wait to take my walk or if having the windows open in the quiet of the pre-dawn is good for braining.

    See all y’all later!

  13. Good morning, 58 and raining outside my window today. Unless something changes I don’t need to drive anyone anywhere today, yay! I have a few things I want to do but for now I’m going to enjoy some needed quiet time. RonK is on the mend so I am gratefully less worried. Best wishes to all.

  14. Friday Meese. 55 going up to 62 here in Kingston, NY.

  15. Good morning. The F1 traffic nightmare has already started. Glad I had already planned to leave early today to see the Hubble movie. Saving my walk for this afternoon. Good speech by Biden last night, well balanced. I liked the reminder that we made mistakes, and the “learn from us” bit.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 66 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 97. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The official temperature at the airport is expected to get to 100.

It appears as though the off-again on-again vote for Speaker is back on – for now. Gym Jordan has never had to communicate with people before – except in angry diatribes and incomprehensible splurtings – and it shows. They are now ticking off the Speaker Pro Tempore and he is threatening to quit and have them go the next guy on McCarthy’s list to finish the vote tallying. Just do it – empower Patrick McHenry to manage the legislative calendar until January 3rd and let’s get the people’s work done.

Senator Laphonza Butler (D-CA) will not run for re-election saying that she has realized that “this is not the greatest use of my voice.” Agreed. Serving in Congress and rubbing elbows with Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz and racist Tom Cotton and fercryingoutloud Tommy Tuberville has to be frustrating and gross. Good for her to not be lured by the prestige and choosing to return to a job where she can make a difference. California will find a solid Democrat to fill that seat.

I need to get a few things done so that I can take my walk before things heat up, pretty much just as the sun comes up. Yesterday it was 84 when I finally hit the sidewalks and it was too hot.

    See all y’all later!

  17. It’s 51 heading for 80 and sunny. More the temps of my much younger birthdays in TX than for AR – global warming and all that. Yesterday we got 8.2 KWHs and the m-t-d at 142.48 is still on track.

I got most of my (very wonderful) birthday presents and greetings earlier this with but this morning I was greeted by a birthday email from my sister Mary who hasn’t sent me a birthday (or Christmas) greeting in over 10 years. So that was a pleasant way to start the actual day.

Remembering Bobby on what would have been his 60th birthday.

    Day ending in y, so I’d best be about my boosting. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Happy birthday, dearest Bfitz, and may this coming year be your best yet!

I didn’t know you had a sister named Mary. She sounds a bit like my late sister Mary in the lack of communication over a long period.

And I wish Bobby Neary were still with us, bless him. What is remembered lives.

      • Yes, I thought of that when I read your diary about your sister. She doesn’t hide from people though. And she does keep in regular touch with our sister Alice so she knows what’s going on in the family.

Bobby will definitely live as long as we remember him.
