Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 22nd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 72 degrees in the Desert Southwest with an expected daytime high of 90. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. For our beloved Sis Dee:

    GoFundMe: Covering co-pay costs for cancer treatments

    (Denise Oliver-Velez is organizing this fundraiser.)

    Hello all. I’ve been diagnosed with both lung and brain cancers, and am currently undergoing treatment – both chemo and now radiation. My doc feels like they both can be beat! Unfortunately, the co-pays for treatment have wiped out my savings -and my home is no longer insured due to needing a new roof- so I’m reaching out for help to cover both treatment costs and to put a non-leaking roof on our home. Anything you can send to help will be a blessing! If you can’t – your prayers and healing thoughts are welcome too!
    Much love to you all. Pa’lante!

  3. Sunday Meese. 50 here in Kingston going up to 51. Looks like the cyberattack on my local hospital is over

    I’m still floating around on a cloud of joy – hard to believe that so many wonderful folks have lifted my economic/medical bill challenges – I can focus on fighting cancer now without having to worry about our home and the bills

    • Thanks for that Emmer x/twitter link in yesterday’s Welcomings. People who should know better are saying he is not too bad. I hope his stands on abortion and his hate goes viral. There are NO good Republicans and this guy is actually one of the worst.

    • {{{Dee}}} I’m so very glad everybody stepped up for you. Both because it covers your financial issues & because it really shows you how much you are admired, respected, and loved. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

  4. Good morning. My exercise yesterday was putting my plants more or less back where they should be. I left the area around where they will someday put my front light back empty, so the worker can work. Got my tea steeping, love the cacao flakes my friend’s tea company makes. today: church, make next week’s breakfast, thaw out lunch, and watch astronomy this afternoon. Allergies are killing me, it’s too early for the accursed cedar pollen, must be fall elm. Ugh. And it is way too hot for almost November — highs for next week are all near 90.

  5. Good morning meeses. It’s 58 degrees in Folsom and rained earlier in the morning. We’ve got more rain on the way, we need it.

  6. It’s 68 heading for 81 and sunny at the moment. We got afternoon clouds, not socked in but enough to keep the generation down to 6.17 KWHs. The m-t-d at 155.88 is exactly on track for 230 – but will only stay that way if we get 7.67 KWHs generated today.

    This has been a lovely birthday week. So many gifts – in the cards, emails, and phone calls, in the actual physical gifts (I include the steak dinner my son cooked for me last night in that, in finally getting my Patreon fixed so I can see Aji’s posts again, and in Dee’s fundraiser going so well (brings good memories of how caring DK was back before I was banned). A great wrap on 72 & a wonderful start on 73. (If I could figure out how to do it, I’d post a photo my son took of me wearing the gorgeous pendant Wings created that basket & earicicle commissioned & with design help from Aji. I posted it on Xitter, Spoutible, and Bluesky so I guess y’all can find it if you’ve a mind to.)

    Sunday chores done. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  7. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! Calloo, callay, O frabjous day! Although it’s a very mixed, windy morning here in Ashburger (the sun is shining right now, but clouds will take over soon), I don’t care. Don’t have to go out. It’s 57 F., going up to 63 F. or something later.

    Younger Son came over this morning, and with a poke and a twiddle and a dibble-dabble, FIXED the TV! Now we can cancel the Comcast man tomorrow. My Dearly will be able to watch the Washington Commies lose–sorry, I mean, play–the New York somethings. He’ll also be able to watch Formula I (hi, anotherdemocrat) later on and at 9 p.m. we can both watch “World on Fire.” I watch the show primarily to see that very cute guy and his sergeant, and to pick apart the costuming. They couldn’t get lipstick and nail polish after a year or so of the war, and how did Lois learn to drive an ambulance all of a sudden, and so on.

    Last night I dreamed of a body of water, a small body. I was on a wooden jetty and when I looked down, a depth of several feet, the water was so clear I could see the pebbles on the bottom. I was just debating whether to have a dip when a young girl, about 10, suddenly jumped in. “That water’s cold, girlie,” I called out. “It’s okay, I’m from New Braunfels,” she said, jumping up and down in the water.

    What a weird dream. I’ve been to New Braunfels, Texas, exactly once in my life, with Dearly, umpteen years ago. I seem to recall we went into a restaurant and found it was just like every other restaurant in Texas in its menu choices. No exciting German stuff at all! Looked up the clear water dream and found that it means peace is in my life and all is in harmony.

    When I congratulated Younger Son on being so amazingly clever (he fixed Don’s printer as well), he said that Nora was even more adept than he. Once there was something wrong with his phone that he just couldn’t manage. Nora took it from him, fiddled with it a bit, and in no time had it working.

    HOW do one’s children and grandchildren become so tech-knowledgeable? I was always in the kitchen cooking dinner (which everyone expected) when the new technology arrived, so I know why I’m not. Anyway, I am deeply thankful this morning because now Dearly will be happy.

    The Christmas catalogues have arrived. Let there be grapefruit and mandarins for all! Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  8. Good morning. It’s raining!!! Probably not a drought-buster, but any rain is good. Got my walk in, at my desk, getting ready to start another week.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 66 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 88. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The week ahead suggests we will not go over a high of 82. That is more like October – just as we are poised to begin November!

    There are 9 candidates for House Speaker. Only two of them did not vote against certifying the 2020 election, one is the deplorable Emmer and one is a Representative from Georgia. It will probably be impossible to find a candidate who voted to certify the election – if I recall, Kevin McCarthy also voted against it so there is that. But what Representative Ken Buck from Colorado (one of the guys who voted to boot McCarthy) is saying is that his bright line is that he will not vote for anyone who refuses – in 2023 – to acknowledge that Joe Biden won the election and that there was no widespread election fraud that stole the election from tRump. I hope the lazy press gets every single candidate on the record for their current position on the 2020 election and their feelings about the bloody insurrection on January 6th.

    I got a lot done last week but Sunday’s time got gobbled up by planned maintenance on the networks I support so I did not get the two things I had hoped to get done completed. This is the last full week of October so there is hope that I can make up time and get the “promised in October” projects done before the calendar flips. There is one more weekend to work with.

    See all y’all later!

  10. It’s 62 heading for 82 and sunny at the moment. Widget says clouds moving in soon – and pretty much staying. Not great news. Yesterday we generated 6.8 KWHs. The m-t-d at 162.52 is barely on track to beat out last year. As far as heat is concerned, it might be September. As far as electricity generation is concerned, it might be December. When it’s possibly but not likely to get over 200. sigh.

    Talked to Fineena last night. Mentioned was that there’s still an issue with her left foot & ankle. She’s hoping her doctor is back from Russia to look at it. The rest of the doctors in the clinic lost interest once they’d determined it’s not a blood clot. Unmentioned was that there’s no Henry to have stolen the other half of Saturday’s Philly cheese steak that she had for dinner last night because he wasn’t around to steal it.

    I guess I’d best get to my boosting day. (I’ll read Diana’s story as soon as I’ve gotten everything set up on all my platforms.) Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody – whatever they’ve got going on in their lives. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Good Monday morning, Moosekind, and what a busy day it will be! It’s 49 F. here in Ashburn, and we’re not expected to reach the 70s—today. The horrible winds have died down a bit, thank Goddess, and it’s sunny, with blue skies.

    Today is the day of the joint Birch Point-Cypress Ridge party, from 5 p.m. until 8. Dinner will be served at 5:30. Dearly and I will have to eat and skedaddle, me to change out of my pirate costume (tricorne, eye patch with skull and crossbones, moustache, and black cloak) so I can get to rehearsal by 7 p.m., and Dearly to rest comfortably in the living room, now that Clever Trevor has fixed the TV.

    SO much to do today! Must type interview notes, write a milestone birthday letter to my beloved nephew (born on October 25th, St. Crispin’s Day), study my lines until I know them in my sleep, fold the laundry, and bla, bla, bla.

    I must say I feel like my normal self now that I’m ignoring the doctor’s orders and drinking tea and coffee in the morning. I will, however, go so far as to use decaf tea in the afternoon.

    Had a lot of trouble posting the short story because of the illos. I didn’t really have permission to post the picture of what the shaman would have looked like. It was a sculpture or painting by Elisabeth Daines. I used one from Wikipedia, hope that’s all right.

    Archaeology Today describes a fascinating dig about a paleolithic shaman in Germany. She was buried with a baby who was related to her but not hers. Her teeth had been filed down to sharp points, which must have been exceedingly painful. The fascinating thing was, the archaeologists found evidence that 600 years after she died, people were visiting her grave and leaving offerings! She must have been a real powerhouse!

    Another interesting thing about Paleolithic and Neolithic women: they were as strong as the men. They had to be, to live that life. Also, they were treated well. Patriarchy hadn’t yet ruined life for women.

    I’d better get on with my weird day. Wishing tasks accomplished for Jan, rain for anotherdemocrat, the opposite for bfitz, health and well-being for Sister Dee, and ease of getting around for princesspat and RonK. Blessed be.

  12. Good morning, 48 and cloudy outside my window today. Yesterday was a nice but busy day with family. Lisa was here so she and Ron took their cameras to a mushroom exhibit at WWU, then I joined them for lunch at the bookstore cafe, followed by a nap and then Sunday supper with Hans and Elsa.

    RonK is feeling much better and is at the PT clinic now. Very grateful he is recovering and is able to drive again. We have been discussing the reality of being older drivers and the need to make some safe rules for ourselves and that had to happen regardless of other health concerns. Getting old is complicated! As always, my best wishes to all.

  13. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 63 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 73. Sunny this morning but giving way to clouds and a pretty good chance for rain. There was rain and lightning over the mountains last night but I don’t think we got any here.

    The news is filled with TFG and it is difficult to bear. So I will go news lite today and get things done.

    See all y’all later!

  14. Good morning. Slept in, going to take a break mid-morning and walk. It is really warm, not like it was a couple of weeks ago, but still unreasonable for the end of October. Anyway, watching astronomy and getting ready for work.

  15. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s 36 F. here in Ashburn, with blue skies and no rain in the foreseeable future. The high is expected to be 72 F. Last night on the way to rehearsal, I saw a most beautiful shining silver half-moon in a dark blue sky, and again in a black velvet night sky when we were finished. A fellow actor pointed out Jupiter blazing away on the opposite side of Great Oak Common. It was such a treat!

    Had a great time at the Halloween party yesterday. My pirate costume was most successful. The head of the Drama Club envied my cloak, said he’d like to borrow it. The moustache stayed on (I took it off to eat), but I lost my gold earring. Hope to Goddess someone finds it and returns it to the Front Desk! Dearly gave me that earring 30 years ago. I have such weird ears that danglies have a hard time staying put.

    Hoping for a quiet morning with Dearly off to the doctor in Reston. I might get some work done. Rehearsal went well last night, but at one point the director said she couldn’t see my face. There’s talk of my putting my sign down while I give my speech, but I’m afraid that would hide the “Raging Granny” words on my t-shirt.

    Well, when all this is over I can rest. Going to stay away from the news as much as possible. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  16. It’s 69 heading for 78, overcast enough the PV system isn’t on and the lights are, drizzly. Yesterday we generated 6.5 KWHs and the m-t-d is 169. I’ve basically lost hope of anything but making it over 200. Maybe.

    I’d planned to do laundry today but that ain’t happening. Maybe tomorrow. It’s got to happen before Sunday or I’ll be out of clean underwear. LOL. Mildly disturbed night, then slept in. So groggy of course. I got another card in the mail – for the first time in at least 30 years all 4 of my siblings sent remembrances of my birthday. I also got a box of chocolate-covered pistachios. I guess 72 really IS a milestone. LOL. I know I am very much blessed, having made it this far in relatively decent health, financially stable, and with so many caring friends and family about.

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  17. Good morning meese, it’s 57 degrees currently in Folsom. Not much to report today other than I will be going to see my parents on Thursday on a 16 hour flight. Yay.

    • {{{basket}}} Well, the 16 hour flight doesn’t sound good but the seeing your parents does. :)

  18. Tuesday Meese. Just got back from a trip to my eye doc to check my glaucoma and cataract lens implants. I’m 100% AOK. yay!

  19. Good morning, 47 and cloudy outside my window. I’m sleepy and slow today, but that’s ok. Now that Ron is on the mend I can relax a bit. I’ve got a Christmas sewing project I may do so that’s my focus for today. Our family is all older now so it’s time to make some decisions re gift giving. I’m the last hold out re gifts, but in reality I no longer have the energy to think about, shop for and wrap so many presents. But I want to give the grand kids a gift so if my idea works I’ll sew for them. The rest of the family prefers just being together, sharing meals and some family fun so that is fine with me too. In fact it’s a relief to just type those words! As always my best wishes to all.

    • Even my mother, who was all-in on Christmas gift giving for decades, finally threw in the towel when there were literally dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As the grandchildren get older, it became more difficult to find actual gifts that they liked and with blended (and then unblended!) families, it got tricky to sort through everyone. As her own children were well into adulthood, we didn’t really need actual “things” any longer – literally, it was the thought that counted. She decided to send a small money gift to each of her children in a nice card to them and their family and call it a day.
