Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 22nd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Wednesday Meese. 47 here in Kingston going up to 72. A friend of mine is coming over today – we are going to plant a big bag of daffodil bulbs for the spring.

    “Roso Sabalones’ photo of a confrontation between protesters in Vieques, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Navy was chosen for inclusion in the new USMM last year”

  2. Good morning. Still summer-like weather — ok, not the hellish 80+ overnights we had, but it is 73 degrees headed to the upper 80s. I took my walk in the 9 o’clock hour yesterday, it was nice. Gonna try that again today. And log off work early to go vote. Lots of constitutional amendments because the Texas constitution is insane.

  3. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 54 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 73. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Yesterday we got rain and the mountains got a whole lot of rain, which is welcome. We start a string of very pleasant Fall days with highs in the upper 70s and low 80s and morning temperatures in the 50s and 60s.

    Another day, another failed Republican speaker candidate. I wonder when they will give up and realize that there the word “Republican” no longer applies to a single party that can find a governing majority. That is what happens when “Republican” is no longer a set of fundamental values but simply a coalition of people with grievances who have been told that Democrats are terrible. And when they turn their party over to an unprincipled charlatan who monetized his power and who has no interest in anything but himself. They need to form a coalition with the Democrats or suck it up and put McCarthy back in – he probably has not moved out of his office – and try to sort out who they are in the 2024 elections. I can’t believe that anyone is telling them that this Speaker drama is a net positive for their party.

    I have to get back to work so I can break early. Yesterday was extremely tiring and I need to pace myself – not enough nap time makes me grumpy!

    See all y’all later!

  4. It’s 68 heading for 79 and overcast but trying to clear off at the moment. We got 5.7 KWHs yesterday. The m-t-d is 174.84 – we’re on track for reaching 200. Beating last year is still possible. But not likely with the forecast I’m looking at.

    My son took me to Tractor Supply last night. They seem to be phasing out the Purina catfood line. I had planned to get 3 bags – trying to not have to go back this year – but there was only one and not of my preferred variety. sigh. I got it because I’m close to out but next month I’ll be making a Walmart run (and hoping they still carry what I want). I suppose it’s just as well. I’d have been scraping to cover the credit card bill. Spreading it out over 2 months will be better.

    Karen’s mostly OK but that issue with her foot is just not going away no matter what she tries. She’s planning to call the clinic today and see if her doctor is back. Not really from Russia – she’s Czech – but her plane usually routes through Russia to get an international flight.

    I’ve some baking to do today but I need to get my boosting started before I do that. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s 54 F. in Ashburn, going up to 78 F. Had an awful night, for reasons I cannot fathom. When I did get to sleep, I had some very rude dreams. Cor, I didn’t know my mind still worked like that. Oh, well, as long as they don’t come true.

    The UU dinner last night wasn’t as lively as usual, even though I sat next to my best friend here. There weren’t as many people.

    For once, I’ll have a blissful day at home, not having to go anywhere! After I get washed and brushed (yes, a late start today), I plan to walk for 20-25 minutes, mail a card to a Witch who lives in the neighboring county, and most of all, get to work typing up a lot of stuff. That crazy Tamara wants to dress like a gypsy on Halloween and read Tarot cards on Great Oak Common. She wants me to sit with her and do something Witchy. Well, I’ve got the pointy hat, the cloak, and the cauldron, so I’ll think of something. She said it would only be for an hour.

    Rehearsal tonight at 7. Next week is Dress Rehearsal. The play actually starts Thursday.

    I’ve volunteered to hand out sample Democratic ballots on Election Day morning at my usual polling site, Dominion Trail Elementary. Dearly and I will vote as soon as the polls open here at The Home (6 a.m.). The ballots themselves will not designate who is D and who is R. Blast! I’ll also hand out sample ballots here at Ashby, most likely from 6 to 7 p.m.

    Will be glad when it’s all over, will be glad when the endoscopy, scheduled for the 10th, is over, and from then until Thanksgiving I just want to rest.

    Th-th-that’s all, folks! Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  6. Good morning, 44 and very soggy in my garden today. It’s time to get the garden ready for winter so I’m glad Bri will be here to help me tomorrow. RonK can do more now but has about 6 more weeks of healing before he can resume normal activity. I braved the pouring rain yesterday and got a start on some Christmas sewing. So between the garden and, November birthdays, TDay, and Christmas prep I’ll be busy. Best wishes to all.

  7. Thursday Meese. 55 going up to 67 here in Kingston. Didn’t get daffodils planted yesterday – my girlfriend is bringing the bulbs over today.
    Sickened by events in Maine. Praying for all who are there. Fuck the NRA.

  8. Good morning. Back downtown. Did my 1.2 mi. It’s 75 degrees. Sigh. The weather guys are getting very excited about the cold front Monday — now saying maybe as cold as the 40s. Which means maybe as cold as the 60s. Anyway, work.

  9. Good Thursday morning, Meese. Partly cloudy at 8 a.m., 46 F. on its way up to 80 F., and of course no rain. We’re 10 inches under normal rainfall for the year in Northern Virginia.

    Ate a salad for dinner—not a good idea—which made me so hungry that I snacked last night after coming back from rehearsal. Woke up far too early this morning, so I’ll need a nap after breakfast.

    I’m also sickened by the mass murders in Maine. What can I say? What can anyone say, except ban AR-15s or whatever the assault rifle’s name is. In fact, ban guns, period. But that will never happen in this country of the insane.

    Read an article in the WaPo about how “Lunchables” are making our children obese. Sigh.

    Hoping for a day of writing. Won’t have a rehearsal tonight, which is a good thing. I sweartagoddess, no matter how much one has studied one’s lines, one can screw up when actually on stage. Last night I messed up a line or two, and the sheriff, who blanked out, said “son of a bitch” when he couldn’t remember his lines. Backstage the rest of us were clutching each other and laughing quietly. After rehearsal we talked about the cast party. They want it catered, which means I won’t get to make the Hot Lips Cookies. Never mind, I’ll make them for a Drama Club meeting and spring them on the unsuspecting populace then.

    That’s all from me today, folks! Hope everyone at the Pond will have a good day.

  10. It’s 67 going to 75 and starting to clear off. Sort of. We generated 7.1 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 189.9 is on track to get over 200. We shall see about anything more.

    We got just over an inch of rain overnight, into the morning and it’s still drizzling. But the sky is getting lighter and I can see a bit of blue to the northwest so looks like the front is moving through.

    Colonizer culture breeds killers. Large scale with invasion, war, mass rape enslavement and genocide. Small scale with supposed “lone wolf” killings in schools, churches, shopping centers, theaters. . . Planetary scale with wiping out entire ecosystems. Killers. Always has. The planet herself will survive us. But she’ll practically have to start over from scratch once “last man standing” is dead. Meanwhile, all we can do is keep doing damage control and saving who/what we can for as long as we can.

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 55 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 77. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It stayed cool (and damp) and cloudy yesterday. Today will be more comfortable. I am taking a second walk now that the weather is nicer and it includes a stop at the pool to bake for a while on the deck chairs. The sun feels great when the temperature stays below 82.

    Good lord, the Republicans really stepped in it this time! I am looking forward to Democrats lashing every swing district Republican to the new Speaker and his out-of-the-mainstream christianist rhetoric. Just like they made all Democrats run as “Nancy Pelosi liberals”, we can now run against the endangered Republicans as “Mike Johnson right-wing haters.” Goddess keep our President and Vice President safe – a President Mike Johnson would be the end of our democracy.

    I am in the middle of several projects that people are waiting for and need to get back to them.

    See all y’all later!

  12. Good morning. Still summer here, 75 degrees and so humid it’s basically a steam room outside. I left work early yesterday because of a toothache. I have a call in to a dentist, hoping I can get in today. Meanwhile, lots of Anbesol. I got mashed potatoes and apple sauce to eat. Trying to not stare at the phone.

  13. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 55 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 81. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I got to enjoy about 45 minutes of the fullish moon from my office window this morning. She will be full tomorrow (Saturday) at 1:24pm MST so tonight is the fullest she will be for us. We are seeing her rising over the mountains this month and that never ceases to delight me – it literally stops traffic as people pull over to admire her.

    Another “troubled man” massacres innocents because he had access to a weapon of war. People who think that having assault weapons in the hands of anyone is a Constitutional right are literally human garbage and should be shunned. What a stupid country we have.

    Republicans elevated a fundie to the Speakership and they will have to live with that choice. Already, completely unacceptable spending bills filled with poison pills are passing on party line votes. Speaker Kevin McCarthy reneged on his deal with Democrats during the debt ceiling negotiations and it appears that Speaker Mike Johnson is going to continue that. I hope Hakeem Jeffries and the Democrats are ready to play hardball when the Continuing Resolution expires on November 17th. A government shutdown right before Thanksgiving will certainly get everyone’s attention. We need to negotiate a CR that goes out past the 2024 election – enough of this bs, I am sick of the prancing idiots of the Republican cacas.

    I have some projects to finish today and then I need to organize my “last weekend of October” work projects.

    See all y’all later!

  14. Good Fri-YAY morning, Moosekind! Yes, even we oldsters welcome Friday. On Saturday and Sunday we’re not expected to do anything.

    The Drama Club biggies are concerned that lack of publicity is resulting in mediocre box-office sales. Well, that’s because originally, these plays were expected to be “reader plays” held during Drama Club meetings, not full-scale productions with sound effects, backdrops, lighting, and props. Like Topsy, they just grew.

    The head of the Drama Club has desperately suggested that we walk in twos or threes through the bars of the restaurants, one (me) carrying a sign and wearing my “Raging Granny” t-shirt, the others handing out slips of paper reminding people of the One-Act Play Festival. I thought of a song:

    “What good is sitting alone in your room
    Come hear what the actors say
    Come to the One-Act Play, my friends–
    Come to the One-Act Play!”

    If only my voice were better! I would so love to try out for the part of Ado Annie in January, but I don’t have the voice for it.

    Very first-world problem, I realize. There is absolutely nothing I can do about other problems, other than voting for Democrats, supporting the Israelis AND Palestinians and the trucks of food, water, and medical supplies that should be allowed into Gaza. Egypt is so hateful, not letting Gazans in, that they must be Republican. The Chinese are flirting with WW III, as is Iran.

    Men! Haven’t they anything better to do than kill each other? When I think of all the hard work women go through to give birth (it’s not called “labor” for nothing), it tears me apart because of the waste. All that hard work of bearing, rearing, and launching, gone for naught.

    I feel a patriarch-hating day coming on. I already kinda hate myself for being white.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  15. It’s 70 but steam-bath humid heading for 76, overcast and may or may not rain or clear off – sort of a “who knows” situation. We generated 5.6 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 187.5 is still on track for 200.

    Colonizer culture is evil, no matter which flag it flies. Including ours. Considering how powerful we are (via theft & genocide), especially ours. Dems do less damage. Mostly. But we, including Dems, are still breaking treaties with every Brown or Black people state/tribe/nation we’ve made them with & excusing genocide by every white or perceived white nation – as long as it’s being done to Brown or Black people. When white leftists say the two parties are the same, that’s privileged crap. When Brown or Black people say it, well, for them sometimes it’s true. (Yes, I vote – and always vote Dem – but I’m not blind nor pretending this Dem administration is not OKing pipelines & mines on Native land & stealing water from Navajo & Pueblo people at the very least.)

    I’d best get started on my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Saturday Meese. 58 going up to 78. Contractor for new roof/drains/gutters is due to start work next Wednesday – though rain is predicted :( I’m just happy that it is going to get done.

    Puerto Rico

    “Young woman committed to her beloved “Isla Nena”: Katherine Martínez Medina received the Brower Youth Award for her community work in favor of food security and against displacement in Vieques.”

  17. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 59 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 81. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The nearly full moon is beaming into my office window; she is at 99.8% illumination.

    That the only person suitable to everyone in the House Republican caca is a rabid Christian Nationalist tells you everything that you need to know. There are no good Republicans, period. Don’t let the swing district Republican freshmen off the hook – lash them tightly to everything Johnson and his covenant (!) wife do and say and do not give them any benefit of the doubt. We need to take back the House for those who know how to – and want to – govern and kick these guys to the curb.

    I am going to grab some waxing moon energy to finish some projects this morning.

    See all y’all later!

  18. Good morning. I’m having a root canal on Tuesday, then a temporary crown etc. There’s an infection as well, so antibiotics. Lucky I need to eat soft foods because of the pain, so yogurt is on the menu anyway. It’s supposed to get cold here tomorrow, I still don’t quite believe it, but I’ll set out tights & an orange sweater to wear to church, just in case.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} I’m glad you can get in that soon and seriously hope the antibiotics for the infection also help w/ the pain. Healing Energy and moar {{{HUGS}}}
