Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 29th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning. It is crazy cold for this time of year, some areas even froze last night. I didn’t get outside yesterday, it was a weird day, I’ll try harder today. Really glad I have these 2 wfh days. Watching astronomy since it’s too early for calls.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 55 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 75. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It will warm back up into the low to mid 80s for a few days but we will keep the cool mornings.

    I have been reading all the Mike Johnson / Christian nationalism stories and I am not quite sure what to make of it. Politically you would think that the Biden-district Freshmen Republicans would be dead men walking but I don’t see any of them disavowing their vote. Are they hoping that people in their districts will forget that they voted for a christian nationalist and that they are content that the House of Representatives is run by two white supremacists from Louisiana, one of whom was a member of the KKK? Perhaps they know that there is more fresh hell waiting for all of us as we come up against the next government shutdown and what promises to be 14 months of pain for people who depend on a functioning government and that with the lazy media, it will probably all be blamed on Joe Biden? Goddess help us if the orange pustule gains power again and we can’t take back the House and keep the Senate.

    October is done so promises to “get things done by the end of October” have no chance of being met. I have to send off a few emails to update status on some projects I had hoped to have done by now. I need to change the way I calculate project completion dates and add a semi-retired the-weather-is-too-nice-here-to-be-stuck-inside time to the end of each project. The chunks of good weather, especially this time of year when the cold nasty weather starts everywhere else, need to be savored.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s an absolutely glorious autumn day, with a temperature of 41 F. at 11 a.m., going up to 48 F.

    It’s still Samhain until sunset today, so I put out pictures of my parents on my hallway shelf, and placed a tiny, tiny bottle of Tabasco sauce in front of my mother’s picture. She carried a small bottle in her handbag everywhere she went, and just stopped short of putting it on ice cream. My father has a coffee pod in front of his picture. I was forced by the human male to make coffee for so many years, at home and at work, that I refuse to make it now. Dearly has that job and very good he is at it too.

    Yesterday Tamara and I, dressed as Witches, sat in the Great Oak living room and offered Tarot readings (Tamara) and fortune cookies from a cauldron (moi). A few women and two men had their cards read. We did it for an hour and then left. It was fun! Lots of people were walking around in costume yesterday and those that didn’t at least wore orange shirts or sweaters.

    Tamara did a three-card draw for me and the Queen of Wands came up! I don’t remember what the other two cards were, but the overall reading was that I am in a very good place right now. Well…I wonder.

    I can’t do laundry because it would be too noisy. Dearly is asleep again. He sleeps most of the time. There are days when he doesn’t change out of his pajamas and dressing-gown. Our living room has become a sickroom, full of oxygen cylinders, green plastic tubing, Kleenex, and assorted pills. When awake, he watches TV, looks at his phone (he still does all his banking on his phone), and sometimes reads a book on his Kindle.

    Ifeel for poor Dee with her cruelly damaged lip! When I woke up my lower lip was swollen on one side. Either I bit myself during the night or something bit me. We don’t have any vampires that I know of, so it must have been me. It looks awful, so I covered it with foundation and will make up my eyes so people will look at them and not my lip.

    Saw a beautiful photo from my friend on FB. On the left was a six-year-old Israeli girl and on the right a six-year-old Palestinian boy. Both looked happy to be sitting together. Wish we could make that come true for everyone.

    Wishing all at the Pond a good day.

  4. It was 22 when I got up, 35 now, heading for 51 and sunny. We wrapped up October with 209.2 KWHs. Not good but more than I use so I’m grateful. The miracle target for November (and December) is 200 but 180 is the hoped for since that’s about what I use in a month (without A/C or any electric heat other than the bathroom when I’m showering).

    I got sidetracked and started my boosting day before I checked in. So I’ve started over there. Took a break to call Animal Control about a young cat I put on the sunporch last night. Sweet cat and friendly. Has a collar but it’s been hanging around here for about 2 weeks so I’m assuming it’s been abandoned. Unfortunately, Animal Control refuses to take it. It has a collar you see so it must have an owner. Somewhere. They told me to put it back outside and stop putting out food so it would go home. Well, I may turn it loose but I’m not going to stop putting out food. Too many animals get abandoned in this neighborhood. I don’t know what to do. I’ve 5 rescue cats already, 4 of whom were abandoned (actually a 5th was too but he died in July 2022). I can’t really afford 5 and I certainly can’t afford 6 again. And I really don’t have the energy to try to see if he and the other cats would accept each other. I just don’t know what to do.

    Nothing new with the people in my life, offline or on. That’s not necessarily good. But it’s not getting worse anyway. I’d best get back to boosting. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good morning, 43 and cloudy outside my window today. I’m slow to wake up today but it’s time to do so because my lists are growing longer. And I need to get said lists on paper so the tasks become real…..and I can start checking a few off! Best wishes to all.

  6. Thursday Meese. Brrrrr. 27 degrees here in Kingston, going up to 51. Contractors are coming today to start on the new roof – yay! Supplies on pallets were delivered yesterday.
    I start my radiation treatments tomorrow.

    Puerto Rico

    • Yay for the roofers! Calloo, callay!

      Will send love and healing vibes for you during the radiation treatments.’

      Lion drawings in caves, hurray! The story I posted recently, “The Shaman’s Magic,” s about the same thing!

      Grab your ear plugs while the roofers roof, and sip a long draft of Cafe.

    • Big huge yay for roofers. You do not need to worry about getting that project started while you are concentrating on your health.

    • {{{Dee}}} Healing Energy & hoping the radiation goes well tomorrow. Yay! for the roofers coming today. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Hi. Running late, I lost my badge & had to walk around outside my building till someone came and let me in. Ono is posting a diary this afternoon at the orange place to raise enough money for my dental bills. She says it will post at 3 pm eastern.

  8. Good Thursday morning, Meese! ‘Tis 38 F. on a glorious, freezing morning in Ashburnikins. Our temp. never rose above 48 F. yesterday. Even the WaPo believes that this coming winter will be snowy.

    Daughter is visiting Lenox, MA, with her husband and is deliriously happy. She’s been visiting all kinds of interesting museums. Son-in-law was delirious because it SNOWED. He wants to move from Texas, which is hot and full of Rethuglicans, to Massachusetts, which is snowy and full of Democrats.

    Today is the Matinee and of course I woke up too early. The left side of my mouth, my lips, I mean, has chosen THIS TIME to swell to monstrous proportions. I’ll try holding some ice against it in a little while.

    To Makeup at 1:30, then a long, long afternoon and evening. My friend will stay for dinner, which we’ll have at Windows, and then we’ll drive her home. I expect my poor Dearly will collapse.

    He sleeps most of the time and eats but little. Do we return to babyhood at the end of life? I fear for the future but am hoping for one more Thanksgiving, one more Christmas.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • Good luck with your Matinee! I would say “break a leg” which is old theatre talk for “good luck” but that term has always bothered me – words have meanings and I would not want to wish for that to actually happen.

    • {{{Diana}}} Healing Energy for your mouth & lips (& anything/everything else) & Good Luck on the performance today. moar Healing Energy to your household. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  9. It’s 50 heading for 61. We got 7.2 KWHs yesterday so we’re on track. We’ll see how long that lasts.

    The little cat will be overnighting on my sunporch as long as he keeps coming back in the late afternoon to be fed. It’s not a good or permanent solution but it’s all I got right now. Talked to my friend. She’s recovered from Covid and is back at work. Now her coworker has it. Her husband seems to have relapsed. She’s thinking about taking the little cat – but she’s got dogs so she’ll have to think hard about it. Karen seems to be maintaining. Aji’s getting worse. Most of the other folks I “follow” are hanging in there. Anyway, Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 54 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 79. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Last night we watched Coco, the delightful Disney animated film about the Day of the Dead. I realized that I still had some ancestor photos in a bag in my closet from the move and that I needed to get them out where I can see them and they can look over me. I would not want anyone to disappear because no one is thinking of them. I am fairly certain that I am the only one of my siblings that actively thinks about my grandmother. Neither of my sisters knew her well, and my brothers probably don’t think about grandmothers often.

    I have agreed to stay connected to my computer for most of the day to work with a client for some setup work. I am not too worried about when I can take a walk since the weather will be walkable all day but I should try to sneak breakfast in before they need me.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good morning, 47, heavy rain, and still quite dark outside my window today. I dug into my desk and all the mess surrounding it yesterday and am appalled at the dusty mess that had accumulated. Oh well, the stacks are clean and organized now so I can burn/shred/file whenever I remember to do so! Best wishes to all.

  12. Good Friday Meese. 36 going up to 56 here in Kingston – I can’t believe that the roofers put a whole new roof on the house yesterday – the only thing left to do are the gutters and drainpipes which will be done on Monday. There were 10 workers who seemed to be like an army attacking the task.

    Puerto Rico

    SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy announced Thursday that it will disburse $440 million to install solar panels on low-income homes in Puerto Rico as the U.S. territory struggles with ongoing power outages and a crumbling electric grid.
    Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, who is visiting Puerto Rico for the sixth time this year, said the department has selected a group of nonprofits and solar companies for the project, which will target up to 40,000 homes. Eligible households would be located in impoverished communities that experience frequent power outages or have a person with a disability that depends on power, such as a dialysis patient.
    Granholm said $400 million will be awarded to three solar companies and $40 million to five nonprofit organizations. The first installations are expected to start by early next year, according to the Department of Energy.

    Some history on Republicans whining about Granholm’s trips to PR

    Saw this:

    Not a fan of Musk anything. This however “could be” good for PR
    Haven’t seen a response from islanders involved in energy issues yet

    • Absolutely topping news about the roof, Dee!

      And wow, some good news about PR for a change! I love the idea of “resilience hubs,” and kudos to Jennifer Granholm for traveling “internationally” to keep an eye on PR.

      Tell me, does one have to have a subnormal IQ to be a Rethug politician? Some of them accused President Obama of traveling “internationally” because he visited Hawaii, where he was born.

      While we’re on the subject of mentally subnormal Rethug males, HOW can ONE stupid senator from Alabammer throw such a monkey wrench in the machinery of approving military promotions? This is endangering our military readiness. I’m trying not to think about the possibility of WWIII.

      We had almost a full house at the matinee yesterday! My play was very well received, probably because the audience recognized their own lives in it. At one point the woman playing the part of the Executive Director had a slip of the tongue and said “Ashby” instead of “Gatsby,” and that caused a big laugh. Altogether, we had quite a few laughs, which was great. We’ve rehearsed our parts so much that the lines have ceased to have any meaning at all for us.

      We were careful not to say, “Break a leg” because so many of us, including yrs truly, have osteoporosis and might break a leg!

      “Benny Costello,” the poker champ in the play, was heard to remark that he wished this whole thing were over. It won’t be long, just tonight and tomorrow night. Then a day of rest on Monday and Election Day will be upon us. That will be a long, hard day as well.

      Dearly is wishing for an egg on toast for breakfast. I can smell coffee, which means it’s time to go. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

      • {{{Diana}}} Yay! for the play going so well. Holding Good Thoughts & sending Healing Energy for everything else. moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • {{{Dee}}} So glad about the roof. Yeah, a small army of people who know what they’re doing can finish up a job in a very short time. The only roofs in my neighborhood that have taken over a day are the DIY jobs.

  13. Feeling very lucky & loved this morning. I have enough money for the root canal. That’s a weird thing to be happy about, but that’s the world we live in. Anyway, did my walk, at the office, calling the endodontist this morning.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} I’m so very glad Kossacks (and possibly xitter’s, spouter’s, & skeeter’s) stepped up for you. And hope the whole goal gets met, to cover next steps and contingencies. Healing Energy and moar {{{HUGS}}}

  14. It’s 50 heading for 67 and sunny. We got another 7.2 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 14.4 is still on track.

    My friend loves the little cat and plans to pick him up this evening after work. I’ll give her some litter (as yukky as it sounds, including some from the box he’s using so the new box will smell right) and some of the food he’s been eating to mix with what she’s got. He’s not really old enough to be eating the food I’ve been giving him but that’s the food I put out. We won’t know if this works until we try it but it looks to be a happy ending and a happy going forward for a little snugglebunny cat who wants inside the house. (I’m looking hard for happy right now. There’s so much of the other in the world.)

    Heading off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Yelp, my friend’s husband is still sick. She can’t get the little cat today. She’ll come over Sunday morning for him. sigh.

  15. Good morning, 53, breezy and cloudy in my garden today. Nice to know Dee has a new roof, another has what is needed for the dentist, Diana’s play is a success, bfitz’s newest kitty has a home, and Jan is busy computing. I’m muddling along but hope to dosomething fun today. Best wishes to all.

  16. Late check-in, meeses. 80 degrees and sunny. Thank goodness it’s Friday, I need a day without client issues.

  17. Good morning. Still floating from Ono’s diary. I have enough to pay for the dental stuff, and a cushion in case the insurance company lied about the cost. Going to get groceries and do housework today. It is “unseasonably warm” — 62 this morning, heading to the 80s. Sigh.

  18. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 54 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 84. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Yay for Dee’s roof! Yay for the kindness of anotherdemocrat’s friends! Yay for Diana’s successful play! Yay for “new home for Bfitz’s new stray”! Yay for princesspat’s easier days with Ron on the mend!

    I am going to ignore the news – and especially the useless 12-months-in-advance-of-election polls – and get my desk cleaned up. My personal end-of-month accounting projects, which were delayed by client work, await.

    See all y’all later!
