Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: November 5th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 59 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 86. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The air conditioning kicked in 3 or 4 times yesterday afternoon – we just couldn’t stretch the captured morning coolness past about 4pm. Today we might have better luck. The pretty waning crescent was in the early morning sky to the east over my mountains when I got up at about 4am MST. She will be new on the 13th.

Fingers crossed Virginia (legislature), Ohio (abortion referendum), Pennsylvania (Supreme Court), and Kentucky (governor). I hope the voters choose wisely and vote to uphold personal rights and also kick Dumbkin’s Republican Party pals to the curb. There is still a lot of damage he can do personally but much less than if he controls the legislature.

I will be ignoring all but the election news today. The breathless reports that tRump was an ahole in court are NOT news – no one expected otherwise. And I really don’t care. I have two projects cooking and one that I should try to get done this morning.

    See all y’all later!

  2. Good morning, 50 and mostly cloudy in my garden today. I think the lawn service will be here to collect the leaves on the front lawn and sidewalks but we’ll need to do the back steps. Our trees stayed healthy this summer so they have an abundance of leaves to share. Our neighbors enjoy the trees but keeping the leaf drop cleaned up so the sidewalks are not slippery is our job. Oh well, keeps us busy and outdoors in the fresh air. Best wishes to all.

  3. Good afternoon, Meese! We were up a little after 6 this morning—hastily swallowed some tea, then went down the hall to vote. Then back to the flat for breakfast. I managed to get to the polling place, Dominion Trails, on time to hand out sample Democratic ballots for two hours. There were several other Dems there to help.

Sadly, I don’t feel good about Loudoun County, at least not the Dominion Trails part. It broke my heart to see WOMEN reaching for a urine-colored Republican sample ballot. I expected all the ugly men to vote Rethug.

Right after I agreed to pass out sample Dem ballots at the Ashby polling place (down the hall and around the corner) from 4 to 5 this afternoon, Younger Son announced that he was coming to tea, either at 3:30 or 4 p.m. They always announce it at the absolute last minute. I’ll have to hide the Christmas presents I’ve already bought because the kids are sure to investigate the closet.

Well, we’ll know tonight, one way or the other. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  4. Woot Woot VA! Diana!

    Celebrate!

  5. Good evening/morning Meeses. It’s the last full day of my holiday back home in Singapore, where it’s 29 degrees Celsius/85 degrees Fahrenheit, humid and not currently raining. It’s been an enjoyable holiday and I’m glad I got to reconnect with friends and have good food. I’m ready to go home now though :)

  6. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! Calloo, callay, ’tis a marvelous day, both literally and metaphorically. Blue skies are hangin’ out over Ashburn, and our current temp. is 48 F. Our high will be 62 F.

We KEPT the Senate and flipped the blinkin’ House!

How relieved I am…slept like an infant last night. It was a big lesson to me, not to watch TV on election night. They present Democrats in the worst possible light.

However, our living room has turned into Dearly’s sickroom, and I’m not going to tell a frail 93-year-old man he can’t watch TV. I’ll just take care to be in my office with earphones.

Election ads have been replaced with Christmas ads. We haven’t even had Thanksgiving yet!

How about some scrambled eggs and toast with Canadian bacon for breakfast? And coffee, of course. We can toast the death of Goobernator Dumbkin’s ambitions.

Cry harder, Doughnut Face. Despite your millions, women do not want YOU in our bedrooms, telling us what to do.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • A complete repudiation of the Fleece Fascist and the faux “New Republicans” who are the same as the old Republicans but even bigger liars.

  7. Good morning. Got my walk done — it’s warm enough for shorts. In November. Even for Texas, that just isn’t right. Mostly good results, though Texas passed a ban on a wealth tax, and Mississippi got my hopes up, though I suppose it’s a good thing that Presley made him work for it. Watching astronomy until it’s time to make calls.

    • Mississippi was never going to go Democratic but as you said, to the extent that it made the sweaty looking Reeves look even sweatier, it was good.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday, the morning after SCOTUS repudiation day …

It is 57 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 75. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

Yay, for Virginia legislature sweep after their attempt to give Dumbkin power to ban abortions.
Yay, for Ohio enshrining Roe in the constitution.
Yay, for Pennsylvania for keeping their Supreme Court blue.
Yay, for Kentucky for re-electing Governor Beshear.
Yay, for Tucson, re-electing the Democratic mayor with a Kari Lake MAGAt running against her as well as a few garden variety “Old Republicans.”

This gives me hope that the Arizona abortion referendum, slated for 2024, might have hope.

    See all y’all later!

  9. It’s 77 heading for 81 and sunny at the moment. We generated just over 6 KWHs yesterday & the m-t-d at 45 is on track for 180.

Internet outage this morning. So I was pretty much incommunicado until it came back. I am thinking about changing internet providers. AT&T keeping increasing my monthly payment – just a few bucks every few months but I’m already at $10/month more than I was 6 months ago – and the service is decreasing as it does. As for customer service – they used to be the absolute best. They aren’t any more that’s for sure. But I don’t know who to change to.

Yay! for our wins yesterday. Things aren’t getting worse and are even a little bit getting better. A little.

    Anyway, I’m late getting started so I’d best get to it. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • I was worried when we didn’t see you at the Pond! I was imagining something awful happening—you know how my wretched mind works. A power outage is bad, but not as bad as slipping on the porch and straining your ankle.

  10. Good morning, 48, cloudy and leaves are still falling outside my window today. The lawn service collected a truck load yesterday but I need to clean out the beds and window wells today, and I think my garden helper will be here to help. I’m very relieved re last night’s election results. Best wishes to all.

    • One of my favorite aspects of autumn is watching the slow dance of the leaves swirling in the wind. Yesterday I walked to pick up our dinner through a beautiful evening with a little nip in the air. It was good to be alive.

  11. Thursday Meese. We had a few snowflakes last night. Current temp 37 going up to 55 with rain. Did not watch the R “debate” clown show last night.

    Interesting exit poll:
    Poll
Note:The nasty and often virulently racist reaction to the support for abortion from Black men was off-putting.

  12. Good morning. At the office for 2 hours of work before the dental appointment. I had to come in anyway, to bring in completed applications, so why not stay. Did my 1.2 mi walk, it is muggy — 72 and trying to rain.

  13. Good Thursday morning, Meese! We have a pale morning in Ashburn, with dimmed sunlight, white mackerel clouds stretching across a pale blue sky, and it looks like just a hint of mist. It may rain later. Or it may not. Anyway, it’s 50 F. right now and will go up to 77 most un-November-like degrees Fahrenheit.

Must text my cousin, who is arranging my late aunt’s memorial service and is no doubt worn out. Today is her 80th birthday. I won’t be able to go to the memorial service or the Mexican lunch afterwards because it’s in Bay City, Texas.

November 9 is also the infamous anniversary of Kristallnacht.

Had a bit of good news yesterday: Darling Daughter informed me she is stopping work at her hospital job the day after Thanksgiving. Good. It’s too much for her and at her age (61), she doesn’t need to be doing heavy physical work. She scrubs down dinner trays, loads them, then pushes a heavy cart to the rooms to deliver meals to patients. She’s so pretty, always looking the patients in the eye and saying “Hello,” that they love her. But she just can’t cope any more with the practices going on “backstage,” so to speak, at the hospital.

Selfishly, one reason I’m glad she’s quitting is that I miss texting with her at odd times during the day. To a large extent she’s taking the place of my late sister, who used to send me terribly funny emails (this was before texting became a thing) at odd times during the day.

Today is the day my writers meet. They’ve written nostalgic, thoughtful, or downright funny essays about the happiest times of their lives. I’ve enjoyed reading them. For their delectation, I made two-ingredient Pumpkin Muffins. I watched a video of the cook who promulgated this recipe: she said one can of pumpkin puree replaces the oil, eggs, and water in the spice cake mix. I added half a cup of organic unsweetened applesauce. They’re OK, not great. At least they aren’t DEATHLY sweet.

Next week for the Cast Party I’m going to make Ruby Wilcox’s Hot Lips Cookies and see whether or not any screams ensue.

Well, that’s enough of my ramblings, Meese. I still feel good about the Democratic wins and the demise of Goobernator Dumbkin’s political ambitions. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  14. It’s 52 heading for 55 and overcast today. Supposed to rain but I’ll believe that when it actually falls. The leaves are certainly doing a good job of falling now. We generated 6.1 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 51.7 is still on track for 180.

Fineena sees the doctor this afternoon. I hope she gets some answers – and some treatment/relief – as that weeping sore that won’t heal on her foot is painful and makes it difficult for her to walk. She’s still missing her dogs. Missing having a dog. She says it’s too quiet in the house. We all know that feeling.

basket is probably still hanging in the sky on his way home right now but will get in sometime today. Probably late morning.

    Heading off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  15. Good morning, 39 and cloudy outside my window today. I removed the spent flowers from the pots around the back entrance and cleaned all the leaves from the edges of the walkway and in the ivy so that area looks much better. I’ll do the patios today and with Bri’s help the leaves in the beds around the house will be moved to the lawn so the yard service can collect them. I love the trees sheltering our garden but the leaf clean up is no small task! Working in the garden is good for my weary soul but my knees are certainly not pleased.

My youngest children are 52 yrs old today so I’ll make a birthday bouquet and enjoy all the memories. We’ll have a birthday dinner here on Sunday for the Bellingham family and share the fun with the out of town family as best we can. So grateful for our time together. As always, my best wishes to all.

  16. I’m home, with a temporary crown. That took a looooong time. There’s a little pain, but it’s not bad. I ate just enough lunch (mashed potatoes with cheese & vegetables stirred in) to take 600 mg of ibuprofen.

  17. Late check-in because of a busy morning that included errands that needed driving. It was in the mid-50s when I got up and looked at the pretty waning crescent and Venus to the east. Yesterday was the first day since early spring that the daytime high did not get to 80.

    See all y’all later!

  18. Friday Meese. 39 here in Kingston going up to 53.
    Puerto Rico

Political education within the medical class is practically nonexistent. Because of this, many of us remain oblivious, ignorant and indifferent about many issues that concern us. A clear example is having witnessed how, while our Health System collapsed during the last decades, the vast majority of doctors remained silent, despite knowing that speaking and confronting the problem publicly was the only way to address it with the urgency it deserved. . Now, three decades have passed, and the majority of “veteran” doctors continue with the same strategy: that of silence.

Anyway… Just as I write this last thing, I also let you know the following… All is not lost! There is a strong, brave and conscious youth that is emerging from the darkness of this crisis. Youth that is not afraid to ask the core questions and, above all, that does not tremble when it comes to confronting the authoritarian structures of our neighborhood. Thanks to you, the young people of tomorrow… I still have hope that a better Health System and, above all, a better country… It is possible!

  19. Good Friday morning, Moosekind. They said it’s going to rain today. So far we have seen no sign. Current temp. is 52 F., going up to 60-something.

In about an hour I have to surge to the Surgi-Center. Forbidden to eat anything (I haven’t since 7 p.m. yesterday), forbidden to drink anything in another 3 minutes.

I hope this is the LAST “procedure” I ever have to endure. I hate doctors and hospitals. This one is an endoscopy. I wouldn’t let her do it before the play finished its run.

See y’all later. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.
