Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: December 17th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. It’s 48 going to 58 and cloudy. The PV system is on but that’s about all you can say. Yesterday the clouds didn’t show up until after dark & we generated 6.7 KWHs, 3rd best day for the month so far. And probably for the month period if the weather widget is correct. But the m-t-d is at 100.6 which isn’t on track but it’s getting close to bare minimum winter usage. And we do have 12 production days left in the month.

    The cranberry walnut muffin bread came out quite nicely and the laundry is done for another 2 weeks. Today is “payday” – my Social Security came in – and I need to go to the credit union this afternoon to get cash. I may or may not decide to swing by the co-op on the way home. Meanwhile I have boosting to do. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  2. Good morning, 41 and partly cloudy outside my windows today. I was to distracted to accomplish much yesterday but I hope to be more focused today. I’m not feeling very jolly this year but our family will be here for Christmas Eve dinner and breakfast on Christmas Day so I need to get busy. Time for coffee and to write a daily must do list for the rest of the week. Best wishes to all.

  3. Thursday Meese. 36 here in Kingston NY- and it will stay at that temp all day.

  4. Good morning, meeses! Thursday, Winter Solstice

    It is 50 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 66. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Tomorrow and Saturday we get doused by the swirling low that will drench California. We are happy to get the rain.

    I will do my best to ignore the headlines as we celebrate Solstice. One nice thing about having our holidays not line up perfectly with everyone else’s is that stores and restaurants are open. We have a pick-up meal planned for an afternoon feast and then we will go find ice cream!

    See all y’all later!

  5. Good morning. In the office for one day before a very long weekend. Had a good walk/run this morning — lengthened all my running segments. Hope people think we’re already closed.

  6. Good Thursday morning, Meese! It’s cloudy and 37 F. in Ashburn, going up to a whopping 49 F. I’m so busy! Got to run to the other building this morning, then go to a meeting from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Have not exercised all week, blast it.

    The “Girls’ Holiday Dinner” was a lot of fun last night. Dear me, I really must get moving.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  7. Happy Yule for those who celebrate it. It’s 53 heading for 57 and more overcast than yesterday. sigh. Yesterday the clouds did thin out a bit, enough to generate 5.8 KWHs. The m-t-d at 106.48 is sort of on track for bare bones minimum winter usage.

    Having a rather bad sinusitis flare. Bad enough I checked my temp (low), pulse (low), O2 (close enough a couple of deep breaths brought me to 100), and did a Covid test (negative). So I guess either the honeysuckle or the fungus that grows on it is taking advantage of the warmer weather. Oh well. It’s a good thing I “work” from home. And I’d best get to it. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  8. Good morning, 47 and cloudy in my wet garden today. I’ll be busy with errands and Christmas prep today and I hope to celebrate solstice outdoors by a fire tonight. Best wishes to all.

  9. Friday Meese. 19 degrees and cloudy here in Kingston, going up to 34. Have to go out and pick up a few Christmas gifts today – some of my godkids will be coming over on Christmas Day. My godson who is Chicano will be bringing some Mexican-American foods when he comes – to add variety to my standard soul food meal.

  10. Good morning. Slept in, felt very decadent. Getting ingredients for risotto today, will cook at least the mushrooms today; the rest maybe tomorrow. I’ve been making progress in my walk/run, going to remind myself of that so I will walk this afternoon.

  11. It’s 52 heading for 57, cloudy and supposed to be raining (but it’s not). Yesterday we generated 1.95 KWHs and the m-t-d is at 108. I hope we do better today. The widget does now show some sunshine before the end of the month & year. I do hope we get it.

    My sinusitis flare is a little better and that’s all I can say for it. I’ve discovered why Covid tests have use by dates on them. It’s not that the chemicals involved weaken or anything like that. It’s that they evaporate. Even in a sealed container. I meant to do a follow up Covid test but nope. Oh well. I don’t have a fever and I can still smell stuff.

    Anyway, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  12. Good morning, 48 and raining in my garden today. We lit the candles, made a fire, and enjoyed dinner on the patio last night. So nice to just relax and enjoy being outdoors. our food cooled fast but we were cozy with blankets and thankfully no rain. I have a busy day ahead but am hobbling more than I would like, but feeling grateful regardless. Best wishes to all.

  13. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 53 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 54. Cloudy skies with rain all day. It was raining when I got up.

    I spent all morning on computer setup work and now it is time to put my feet up and be semi-retired.

    See all y’all later!

  14. Saturday Meese. 21 here in Kingston, going up to a cloudy 38. Finished tree trimming yesterday – always enjoy seeing my grandmother’s and my mom’s ornaments, even though we’re not Christians.
    Puerto Rico

    Today is Puerto Rico flag day but remember that the original is from 1868. Happy day!

    • I miss having room for a full-sized tree; my memory ornaments are packed away in boxes and in storage as they won’t fit on the tabletop tree. My daughter will likely have a real tree when she has her own place, she loves the holidays and misses having a big tree. If it were up to her, she would have holiday decorations all year long. :)

    • I miss having a tree but the wreath usually works OK for me. I decorate the windows and wreath with the most personally significant of my ornaments. This year we used local materials for the wreath though and I am seriously missing the “Christmas tree” smell.

  15. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 46 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 48. It is partly cloudy now but will cloud up again as the next round of rain begins around mid-day. I did see some stars over the mountains this morning. I may want to take my walk earlier than usual – it is not going to warm up enough to make it more enticing to walk later. I did not get an official walk in yesterday but I did stretch my legs with a trip to the grocery store. It was definitely not enough and today I will walk in the rain if I have to.

    The Wisconsin Supreme Court ordered new legislative maps to be drawn to correct the unconstitutional partisan gerrymander the Republicans put in place in 2011 and put on steroids in 2021. In Wisconsin, Democrats can win statewide elections by 5 points and not gain a single seat in the Assembly or the Senate. It has been sad to see democracy ended in the state I called home most of my adult life and where I raised my daughter. I hope the courts can get the redistricting done in time to avoid challenges for 2024. Elections have consequences – the last two statewide elections did win two seats on the Supreme Court and the second one put Democrats in the majority. It is too bad that left-leaning people in 2016 decided to stay home pouting because their god Bernie was not on the ballot and CLEARLY both parties are the same. Idiots. They literally killed people.

    I have a full platter of quiet time projects to work on today and I best get to them.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good morning. It is really warm, I have the kitchen window open. Watching the news, later I’ll cook risotto. And walk, darn it. Which I didn’t do yesterday. Sigh. I did get a new book from the library, if you like science fiction, John Scalzi’s latest is really good.

    • Blue Sky is not allowing shares yet. There is a hack you can use to post an embed but I don’t know if it shows for non-BSKY users:

  17. It’s 60 going to 67 and trying to be sunny. Not doing a good job of it but I’m seeing some blue sky and shafts of sunlight. Yesterday we generated 1.7 KWHs and the m-t-d at 110 is not quite to minimum winter usage. But we do have 9 more production days. We shall see what we shall see.

    Talked to Fineena last night. She’s having issues with nausea (can’t reach the doctor of course) and it in a lot of pain. Physical pain and also she’s really missing her dogs. She knows she can’t take care of a dog right now, either physically or financially, but it’s the first time in her adult life she’s been without one. So this time she doesn’t have a new friend to comfort her over the lose of her old ones.

    I’m feeling better, not a lot better, but better. And slept late. Which was probably good. I hope. Anyway, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
