Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: February 11th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 35 degrees in the Desert Southwest ???? with an expected daytime high of 50. Possible icy conditions in the early morning but skies will clear mid-morning and it will be sunny for the rest of the day.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese – 39 degrees here in Kingston going up to 48. I realize that most households who are into sports are gathering and watching the Superbowl, but this household is focused on women’s basketball – my husband is a fanatic. His team is UCONN (they are not doing well this season) and mine is South Carolina who are #1 and the only team who hasn’t lost a game this season and they play today. We are both elated to see Puerto Rico is headed to the Olympics!

    Need something to smile about and cheer for given that The Orange Monster would like to see us in WWIII.

    • I am following two women’s basketball teams now that I live in Arizona. Neither of them are doing very well but both are improving. Wisconsin’s program was left for dead after the neglect and poor coaching choices from the men running the athletic department. They finally got a smart coach who is a good teacher and she is improving every year but it is difficult to start with the leftovers from the last coaches and then try to recruit. She necessarily plays a lot of freshmen and sophomores and their youth shows. She could have a winning record this year but the important thing is that they are fun to watch again. They have a wiley freshman point guard who is 5’4″ and a 6’4″ center/forward and watching them interact is something else!

      Arizona is still rebuilding after their 2021 visit to the championship game where they lost to Stanford. They lost many of those players to graduation, came out net negative in the brave new world of the Transfer Portal and with injuries are only playing with 7 players this year. They are gritty and determined and also young. If they can avoid getting discouraged and return next year with more experience and better health, they can have a nice run. They will be moving from the Pac12 to the Big12 so I will be able to watch all of their games – this year I have only seen a couple. The Pac12 had no media package for ordinary folks, you needed to either have cable or spend $40 a month on the full-time streaming services like Fubo. That is one of the reasons that the Pac12 is now the Pac2, the conference management turned down rights packages that would have put them on ESPN+ because they thought they deserved more money. So now they no longer exist. Greedy bastids. In any event, the Big12 is a Power Four conference and since many of the Four Corners teams moved to the Big12 also, it will be a good mix of close-in rivals and a few longer trips. Growing up in Missouri, many of the Big12 teams are also teams my brothers root for so we will have new fodder for our sports conversations.

      Quite a few of the good teams from last year’s Sweet Sixteen are having down years. I think SC is determined to not let that happen to them! My only hope is to not see the hateful Kim Mulkey in the championship game again. And that Caitlin Clark leaves for the WNBA after this years tournament and stops making commercials.

  3. Good morning. Visit to urgent care yesterday was a waste of $50. They couldn’t do any tests or really, tell me anything. Sigh. I feel sorta normal, will call my doctor’s office tomorrow, see if they can work me in. Meanwhile, my tea is steeping, I’m watching the news. I need to cook this afternoon. I’ll watch some Marvel movies or Star Wars stuff; or maybe a Trek series that I haven’t seen.

  4. Good Sunday moaning, Moosekind, what are we moaning about this day? It’s drizzling unenthusiastically outside. This is what we were supposed to get yesterday. Awful weather is predicted for Tuesday morning—rubbish! Right now it’s 52 F., so I’m wearing bermudas. Our current temperature is today’s high, by the way.

    Friday morning, right after breakfast, I was stricken by a sharp pain in my stomach. Knowing I am far too ancient for the usual cause of pain in that area, and no longer have an appendix, I was mystified. Then I acquired a headache and backache. Took Pepto and aspirin, then retired to bed. By dinner time I knew I couldn’t make it to rehearsal, so I called in sick. A member of the cast called me and told me she had stomach ‘flu and couldn’t make it to rehearsal either.

    Moosekind, I want to go on record as saying that I don’t think this musical is ever going to be performed by the Drama Club here in late April. Our music director is in the hospital with a fractured pelvis. IMHO, she’s out for the duration. Her daughter is here taking care of her for three weeks. Our standby Music Man had to visit Urgent Care this weekend also, with a different ailment. He’s a dear man, but his health has not been the best lately.

    I told a member of the board in confidence that I think this musical is beyond the capabilities of its 70-to-90-year-old cast, some of whom cannot memorize lines or stand up for longer than a minute or two. Gods! Well, we shall see what we shall see, as our wise bfitz says.

    Friday I felt so ill I slept most of the day. Yesterday I also slept in the morning. I started eating again, however. Today I felt well enough to cook breakfast, although it didn’t turn out well, alas.

    We will endure the Super Bore tonight with guac and YELLOW tortilla chips (not blue or white), pizza, and mixed berries for afters. I am watching it strictly to see the Budweiser horses. I’ll have a book in hand, as usual.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  5. It’s 37 heading for 48 and overcast. Supposed to rain but I’ll believe that when I see it. Darker than yesterday when we managed to generate 4 KWHs and the m-t-d at 80 is still, barely, on track. It won’t be by day’s end.

    Got my Sunday chores done, just finished my oatmeal, and need to get to my boosting. Hands are not happy so it’ll be slow. But it will get done. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Wow it got cold. Okay, 43 might not sound cold to y’all, but it’s been a couple weeks since it was that cold so it was a shock. Did my walk. Just a walk, still not feeling great. Will call my PCP this morning. Anyway, hi — happy Monday.

  7. Monday Meese. 31 and cloudy, going up to 36 here in Kingston. I set an alarm and woke up to see the Super bowl halftime show – which I didn’t like and went back to bed. Not my kinda music – I’m sure lots of people loved it.

    Puerto Rico

    • I don’t know if it was my TV or the feed but the sound quality was terrible. I don’t know any of the performers any longer so it was just a lot of noise and movement to me. I had a difficult time staying up for the entire game – it wasn’t really very entertaining until the 2nd half.

      I did not like having to root for the Chiefs because of their refusal to remove their anti-Native American imagery and police their terrible fans in the stands. But I can’t root for San Francisco and their Bosas to have any success.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 33 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 63. Sunny skies are in the forecast. My weather widget says “areas of frost” and I believe it! It was cold on my patio and there was a stiff breeze from the north making it colder; the skies were clear, though, and I saw some stars. We will now steadily progress into the 70s for the remainder of the week. Last night I saw the prettiest waxing crescent in the southwest sky. She was at 6.8% illumination and it was so clear you could see the earth’s shadow on her unilluminated section.

    I am going to ignore the news as much as possible. I agree with the pundits that Merrick Garland has done nothing to distinguish himself as AG. If he had started a Justice Department January 6th probe of tRump and Republican members of congress instead of handing it off to a special prosecutor, we would not be facing a constitutional crisis where democracy – here and in Europe – hang in the balance. That he gave a partisan Republican special prosecutor a chance to audition for tRump’s Attorney General with an editorial on Joe Biden’s fitness for office is ghastly. Someone pointed out that when Democrats need to be investigated, a Republican is assigned to do it and when Republicans need to be investigated, Republicans are assigned to do it. What the hell is wrong with us? Just like Patrick Leahy and his freaking Comity ruining the federal courts during the Bush years, Democrats will never save democracy unless we take off the gloves and fight like we care about it. Harumph!

    I have a number of projects that are awaiting me this morning and I should get back to them.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! We’ve awakened to Brigadoon here in Ashburn. Fits my mood, I have to do taxes and send them off before the Rethugs shut down the “gub-mint” on March 1.

    Well, I was disappointed that the 49ers didn’t win. At least the Chiefs had to work for their victory, it wasn’t a blowout. Patrick Mahomes has the face of an angel. I thought the ads were stupid and didn’t even watch the “halftime show.” I was putting on night clothes at that time, and had to wait until the end of the game to see my beloved Clydesdales! I’d rather look at horses any day of the week than footbore.
    I dunno, I’m just not on the same wavelength as most people: I find nothing amusing or brilliant about the singing and dancing of today. I absolutely LOATHE the current fashion among American males for facial fungus. Makes them look like the Taliban.

    I believe February 12 was Lincoln’s actual birthday. I recall having an earnest conversation with my four-year-old granddaughter, who had learned about him in preschool, after tea years ago. When I look at photos of her in her younger years, it makes me smile. Of course, she’s way too cool to want to spend any time with her aged grandparents nowadays. She used to play checkers, and then chess, with Grandpa.

    Well, that’s enough from me! Must finish my coffee, take a shower, then get on to the taxes. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  10. It’s 36 and may or may not make it to 48 and overcast. We’ve had off & on snow since before dawn but it’s above freezing so it didn’t stick & is already melting off. Yesterday we generated 4 KWHs and the m-t-d at 84 is not on track. It’s going to lose more ground today.

    I got a phone call this morning and was so late getting started I just went to boosting and forgot to check in here. But I’ve reached a breathing point. And gotten lunch. LOL. Anyway, Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Puerto Rico

  12. Good morning. Went to the doc yesterday, they took blood and I have to go back for an H. pylori test. So, he suspects an ulcer? (you can’t do the test unless it’s been over a week since you took something like pepto bismal) My blood pressure was high, but there’s been a little stress in my life. It’s supposed to be gorgeous this afternoon so I’m going to use some vacation time and do my walk/run then — no skipping workouts any more if I’m going to lower my blood pressure.

  13. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 39 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 68. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The stars were visible over the mountains this morning!

    Mardi Gras is earlier than usual this year due to the earlier than usual Easter. March Easters are rare or at least they feel rare. I had two birthdays on Easter and on one of them my mother put an Easter egg inside the hole in the my angel food cake so that I would be guaranteed to find at least one egg!

    I discovered a problem with a disk to cloud file upload process I was running and will have to take time to clean up the mess it created. Thankfully it is on my computers and not a client’s computers but it means delaying the start of my February client projects. I am going to hope that I have a mulligan since one of the projects I had hoped to start by now has been languishing for about a month. I still need to get my final tax return ready to submit – even though I owe money, I want it to be received and processed before the government shuts down on March 1st. This next shutdown might be more permanent because it is likely that Speaker Mike Johnson gets defrocked over the Ukraine aid package and the failure of the border deal. He has angered members from the hard right wing and the “moderate” wing of his party and all it takes is one person to call for his removal and then 2 people to fire him. What a freaking mess.

    See all y’all later!

  14. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! I am very happy this morning for two reasons: (1), it’s been SNOWING, a rare sight here, and (2), “I’m jist a girl” who CAN say “No”!

    Yesterday evening I was asked whether I was interested in directing one of the two one-act plays the Drama Club will put on this fall. I said “NO,” so firmly that the guy who asked, blinked. Just being the Assistant Director for “Oklahoma!” makes me feel as if I’ve been set down in the middle of a foreign country where people speak an unknown language. I only said yes because I think the experience will help me write better plays. Play writing and acting are my interests, not directing.

    The snow appears to have changed to rain and stopped. Loudoun County schools are closed, Arlington was on time, and much to the children’s disappointment in Fairfax County, school is starting two hours late. Today I have to do taxes, go to the gym, and get my hair done, so the sooner I start all this, the better.

    Wishing I could see the stars too, Jan, but one can’t have everything. I enjoyed the sight of snow falling, as did Dearly, who said he enjoyed the feeling of not having to go out in it.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  15. It’s 36 heading for 61 and sunny. Yesterday we generated 3.4 KWHs and the m-t-d at 88.9 is not on track. But it should certainly gain ground today.

    Today is going to be a busy day. I not only have laundry to do (which at this time of year means build the fire in the early afternoon & hang the clothes on racks in front of it) but I have errands to run before the traffic gets bad around 5 (because it still gets dark too soon to wait until after the traffic dies down again after 5). But first I need to get to my boosting. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Good morning, 36 and mostly sunny outside my windows today. Ron’s birthday was this weekend and with all the family activity I didn’t have my usual computer time, but you all were in my thoughts. Nice to read here this morning, thanks.

    A bit of good medical news…..my blood levels (from taking warfarin) are finally stable and the clinic’s change to a video appointment instead of consulting with a nurse re lab tests will not affect me. Apparently being “medically unstable” has a few advantages :) I do have to learn to use the communication portal more often though.

    I’ve got some valentine errands to do today but am keeping it simple with primroses and cards. Best wishes to all.

  17. Good morning. Sigh, didn’t exercise yesterday. For some reason, exercising after work is so much harder than before. Anyway, today’s another day to try.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} It’s hard to make oneself exercise when one doesn’t feel well. Doubly so when one has already put in a full day’s work. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}
