Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: February 25th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 53 degrees in the Desert Southwest ???? with an expected daytime high of 82. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 15 degrees here in Kingston, going up to 40 and sunny.

    Puerto Rico

  3. Good morning. Today will be another too-warm-for-February day. Near 90 is just wrong. Got a lot done yesterday – lunch & dinner for the next couple of weeks. For now, I’m loving the smell of my steeping tea and watching the news.

    • What is the flavor or variety of tea that smells so delicious when it’s steeping?

I can never smell my tea when it’s steeping because it’s in a pot covered by a tea cosy.

  4. It’s 64 heading for 77 and sunny. Yesterday we reached 15 KWHs! The m-t-d is 233.4 and we’re having a lovely productive day & month. (We didn’t need the heat for this, just the sunshine.)

Maybe May in February? Tomorrow & Tuesday it’s supposed to be in the low 80s. But when the temps drop Tuesday after sundown they’re really going to drop. Like to freezing. And Wednesday’s high is supposed to be mid 40s. The sheltered front yard daffs are blooming and even a few of the usually later back yard daffs are as well. Which they aren’t supposed to do until late April. There are swelling buds on the Bradford pear as well. The trees don’t seem to be leafing out though, thank the Goddess.

    OK, Sunday household chores are done so I’d best get to my boosting ones. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Girlfriend, are you going to bring some of those daffs inside before they freeze? They’re a lovely color and they have a faint, delicate fragrance that I adore.

      • No, the cats would get them. I can enjoy looking at them out the window. The freeze isn’t going to be that deep or that long. It may take down the ones actually blooming but there are lots that haven’t bloomed yet.

  5. Good Sunday morning to everyone who didn’t vote in the Republican primary in South Carolina yesterday! The results were a bit of a surprise, considering that all the pundies and fundies were predicting Thing would win by 30 points. Didn’t happen. However, “Be picky, choose Nikki” will not work as a campaign slogan—she’s against women’s rights and a host of other important issues.

It’s a gorgeous, although chilly morning here in Ashburn. It was 25 F. when I rose from my bed, and it’s going up to 49 F. today. The Rethugs must be controlling the weather. They arrange matters so I never get to see the Moon on the night She’s full. However, it’s clear as a loch in Sutherland today, so perhaps I can see the Snow Moon tonight.

Ordinarily I don’t care for nonfiction—I belong to the “Tell me a story” category of fully developed embryo—but I’m reading and enjoying Kate Cohen’s We of Little Faith. It’s difficult, as she points out, to tell people you’re an atheist. But what else can a person be? In 5 billion years, according to science, our sun is going to turn into a red supergiant that consumes all its planets, including the one that’s inhabited by people who think they’re important, and no one knows or guesses what will happen after that.

Well, breakfast has been cooked and consumed, phrases are forming in my mind for the next Writers’ Group assignment, so I’m going to jot them down while they’re still fresh, and then go the gym. I swear. Yes, really.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  6. Monday Meese. 31 here in Kingston going up to 56.
Well – here we go with more crap

A new Tennessee law undercuts the Supreme Court’s 2015 landmark, closely divided decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, and marks a significant victory for a resurgent conservative movement to restrict LGBTQ rights.

The law, signed by Gov. Bill Lee (R) to little fanfare on Wednesday evening, allows state officials to decline to “solemnize marriages.”

The new law effectively removes half of what is needed under state law to become legally married. In Tennessee, marriage occurs after two events: the issuance of a marriage license, and the formal solemnization of a marriage, which can be carried out by a religious official, a state notary public or a state official.

By targeting solemnization and not marriage licenses, the law allows Tennessee to undermine the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges while potentially avoiding a direct challenge to the precedent.

    Next up – Loving :(

    Puerto Rico

“Today is the birthday of one of the most influential writers in Latin America and the Caribbean, Mayra Santos Febres, whose work focuses mainly on sexuality and female sexual desire. She is all Puerto Rico. In the middle of the pandemic we recorded this episode of #Legado for @Spotify. It’s worth knowing her.”

    • There is no question that red states are looking for a court case to get in front of Bernie Sanders’ SCOTUS so that they can reverse or restrict Obergefell rights. The current court has no respect for precedent.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 59 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 75. It is cloudy now and the weather widget suggests it will be cloudy all day with a chance of rain, a pattern that looks to be in place for a few days.

So traditionally awful Republican lost to corrupt wannabe dictator. I hope that when the rest of America wakes up they realize that we have to do freaking 2020 all over again and vote for the guy who won’t destroy democracy and use his office for personal retribution. A pollreader suggested that the polls are not very good right now because a lot of Americans do not realize that tRump will be the Republican nominee. Lots of people don’t realize that Merrick Garland slow walked the January 6th investigation and now we are unlikely to have a trial of the coup organizers before the election. I don’t trust the media to report what is happening – I hope that the Democratic Party’s messaging arm has a lot of money for ads. I will toss my vote for Biden in the Democratic Primary in the mail later today.

I have appointments this morning so I need to get a few things done before I have to shut everything down.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good morning. Made it to 4 ½ rounds of 4 minutes running, 2 walk. I’m sure I can make 5 on Wednesday. Another too-warm day, but we will get February back later in the week. I see the new is still terrible. Happy Monday. y’all.

  9. It’s 61 heading for 77 and sunny. Yesterday we generated 14.6 KWHs and the m-t-d is 247.6 – with 4 generating days left in the month. The clouds are supposed to move back in later today and stay through Thursday so we’re not likely to get more of these 14-KWH days but you never know.

    I had a nice visit with my son yesterday afternoon. Which is usual but still very pleasant and much enjoyed. My days are much of a muchness and largely isolated so it’s nice to have a regular Sunday visit. Nothing new that I know of. So I’d best get to my boosting chores. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good afternoon, 42 and partly sunny. Yesterday was very fun…..a family lunch with tasty food and good dogs. So I’m now officially another year older and grateful to be so regardless of the state of my joints. My sons organized, cooked and hosted the event so it was an easy treat for me and my weary legs were not stressed.

I spent this morning trying to decide how to proceed with medical care because my left leg is getting weaker …..do I go back to the walk in clinic, do I try to see my new doc, should I go to the ER, etc, etc. I’ve finally decided to just make the best of it until I see the PT on Thursday and ask him to help me make a plan. Right now my new doc is out of the loop and two different medical systems means two different communication portals for me to try to integrate. And I feel like I’m “pieced out” with no one person having a complete understanding of my overlapping medical issues. Getting older with the medical system we have now is not easy! Best wishes to all.

    • Your birthday sounds lovely, princesspat! Hope you can make a plan with the PT. Sometimes there are “patient advocates” that can negotiate through the morass of medical offerings, but I don’t know how you’d go about getting one.

    • Our current medical system is not good for people who actually need medical care. They are very good at collecting their premiums but little else. The model here in Tucson is that we figure out on our own how to find a PCP and arrange for any specialists we need to see. When my old PCP left the “branch office” of the health care organization I was connected to, I had to go find a new one – there was no transition help. Thankfully, the health care group portal was still in place so my medical history did not have to be rebuilt. I can navigate the portal but I wonder what would happen for people who are in cognitive decline and don’t have family to help?

I hope your PT can figure something out for you. Blasted BCH! The solution of course is a new knee but that not being safe for you is blocking that. :(

  11. Tuesday Meese. 27 here in Kingston going up to 59! Yay.

Found something to make me smile. A gift.

“The Albert Einstein college of medicine will be tuition free” Dr. Ruth L. Gottesman donates 1 billion dollars to make that happen

    • ISN’T THAT WONDERFUL! It’s so nice to hear some good news for a change. The joy on those students’ faces is heartwarming to see. We saw it on the morning TV news.

      Bless Dr. Gottesman.

  12. Puerto Rico

The adopt a hole account on Twitter documents the horrible pothole situation in PR

  13. Good morning. So grateful for my 2 wfh days. Going to walk this afternoon — no, really I am, if it’s going to be in the 80s & sunny, I’m going to get some natural vitamin D.

  14. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s lovely and sunny right now, with a temperature of 48 F. in Ashburn, going for a high of, um, 60 F. They say it will rain this afternoon (let’s see it, then I’ll believe it, chicky-boom), so I must enjoy the morning as much as possible. Last night, leaving rehearsal after 9 p.m., I saw Herself hanging low in the sky, as round and yellow as a wheel of cheddar cheese. Very amusing!

I still loathe rehearsals. Why can’t they discover that Loch Ness monster under the stage and spend months getting rid of it, thereby causing us not to do this musical? I hate the way I’m expected to do three different things at the same time. I can only do one. There’s a !@#$%^& who arrives at rehearsal at the very last second and never lets me know he’s there. The theatre seats naturally face the stage, so I have to keep twisting around and craning my neck to see if he comes in.

I’m still in shock from the news that two of my former neighbors are dead. They lived across the street from Dearly and me in the early 1970s, when we all lived in cheap WWII-era starter houses. They had four children, the youngest of which was born the same day, same year, same hospital as my Elder Son. The director of our musical lives in Sterling, VA, and knew them. My friend M. died last year, apparently, at age 80. Her husband T. died in early February this year: our producer went to his funeral last week. It’s so hard to believe! Facebark was not very forthcoming.

Also, Randy Sparks, the songwriter who created one of my favorite songs of all time, “Today,” died. His obit appeared yesterday. I wrote a novel in which the song was a recurrent theme, especially this part:

Today, while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I’ll taste your strawberries, I’ll drink your sweet wine
A million tomorrows shall all pass away
Ere I forget all the joy that is mine today.

No rehearsal tonight, so this morning I’ll take care of a few writing chores and get my hair done. I’m still working on a blog about my late friend. It would be nice to get it out today. She died on 12/31/23. Weird date.

Time to get a move on. Bfitz, I’m glad you’re getting enough sun to meet your production goals. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  15. It’s 72 heading for 83 and mostly sunny at the moment. Hopefully it will stay sunnier than it did yesterday but yesterday still wasn’t bad. We generated 11.7 KWHs and ended the day with 259.4 for the m-t-d and 3 production days left.

This is the last of the early summer days for a bit. When the temps drop this evening after the sun goes down, they’re going to drop like a rock. It’s supposed to be 27 just before dawn tomorrow and only get up into the mid 40s. So, as wrong as it is, I’ll enjoy the warmth and the daffs for another day – and bring in firewood for tomorrow.

    Nothing new that I know of. So I’d best get to my boosting. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 53 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 68. Mostly cloudy skies. This morning there were no visible stars and no visible moon – Diana is seeing more moons than I am!

I feel sorry for people in blue and purple states who will be subjected to another Republican deadenders government shutdown. I do NOT feel sorry for the people in red states who elected these piles of human garbage knowing full well what they would do. Apparently the right-wing cacas want to “find out what it looks like” to have no TSA and grind air travel to a standstill and delay food stamps to needy families. In Iowa, they will be glad because their governor thinks that children are too fat and less food would be a good way to slim them down. Deplorable.

I have to get some banking transactions done before the shutdown so I need to get back to work.

    See all y’all later!

  17. Good morning, 35 and partly cloudy in Bellingham today. I’m grounded with ice on my knees but thanks to music and solitaire it’s ok. I want to be outdoors doing the winter pruning I had planned to do but that will have to wait for now. The young woman helping me with the garden is completing a master gardener program so she will be here starting in March. Nice to know I will have her help again.

As soon as I can hobble forth I have laundry to do, a computer issue with an old laptop to fix if I can, and ever present desk work is always waiting for attention. Best get busy!

  18. Good morning. I went to the gym, and with the help of the treadmill, made it to 5 rounds of 4 minutes running, 2 walking. Had to really talk myself into keeping going, but I did. Getting ready for work and watching astronomy.

  19. Good gray Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s 60 F. here in Ashburn, down from 68 F. earlier this morning. It looks as if it would like to rain. All day yesterday it looked the same. The temperatures will suffer a steep drop (sorry, budding cherry trees), so Thursday will be cold.

Could not get into the Moose Pond last night to upload my blog. I’ll try again after breakfast. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, ’tis 9 o’clock and Dearly wants breakfast. We’re having pancakes (not made by yrs truly). Did you know this is National Pancake Day?

    Back later. I smell coffee!
