Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 12th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 59 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 90. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

I wish Democrats had not handed the speakership to Pastor Mike Johnson – they should have let Marjorie Taylor Greene depose him and convinced two Republicans to vote for Hakeem Jeffries. It is despicable that the Speaker of the House, a Constitutional Officer and second in line to the presidency, is appearing at the criminal trial of a serial sexual assaulter and yelling about the “terrible” criminal justice system that would hold tRump’s sorry ass accountable for his crimes. As Digby Said: Our Banana Republic.

The Arizona Supreme Court gave Kris Mayes her 90 day stay on the 1864 abortion ban increasing the chances that the law repealing the ban will become state law before the ban is enforceable. There are some tricky timing issues and I hope that if they can’t close the gap that women can find a place to end their pregnancies. Elections matter and the election that put Kris Mayes in the Attorney General’s office by about 400 votes is a reminder that every vote counts. In November, we will enshrine reproductive rights – abortion and birth control – into the constitution and kick out the mouthbreather Supreme Court Justices that former governor Doug Doucebag put in place. We have a lot of work to do to finish off the job we started in 2022.

I need to wrap a few things up so I can take my walk before it gets hot.

    See all y’all later!

  2. Good afternoon, 54 and partly cloudy in Bellingham today. Between PT and my sister’s visit I’ve been absent again but all’s well, just not very much computer time. My sister and I took the walker to Boulevard Park yesterday and it was nice to be there again. But the same bumps, dips and uneven terrain that made it difficult for our grandkids to learn to ride their bike there were a challenge for my and my novice walker skills too. Made me chuckle to remember being there with them. a circle of life moment. Time to start the laundry and water the few plants I’ve been collecting for the flower pots. They are going to be very simple this year and will get planted when it happens. It’s an adjustment but I’m making it! Best wishes to all.

  3. Good morning. I wrote a Bookchat last night, got quite a few comments; many after I’d gone to bed. Interesting discussions about music. Anyway, did a really hard workout yesterday, so this morning I just walked. In the office, ugh I hate these 2 days.

  4. Thursday Meese. Raining here :(

  5. Well, if this isn’t annoying! Just lost several paragraphs I’d already typed. Press one wrong button, and one’s post is toast. Anyway, happy Thursday, Meese.

All right. It’s a beautiful morning for a change, 64 F. now, going up to 78 F. later. Going to get some sunlight before noon so I can sleep tonight.

The Biography Book Club takes place at 1:30. At least two members won’t be in attendance. Perhaps I can talk longer, then. There is a LOT to say about George Harrison.

Tonight there is a postcard-writing party from 7 to 9 at the Blue Ridge Clubhouse. Apparently, it is very effective for getting out the vote if the postcards are mailed 5 days before the election, reminding people to vote. Our primary is in June.

Friday looks like an “empty square day” on the calendar. Yea, verily!

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  6. It’s 64 going to 75, the rain’s slacking off, and the PV system finally came online. Not by much and I still have the lights on, but at least it’s on. Yesterday we generated 15 KWHs and the m-t-d at 215.9 still isn’t on track for 450 but at least it didn’t lose any more ground. As it’s likely to do today.

I spent more at Tractor Supply than I’d planned on by about $40 but they actually, unusually, had the Friskies canned food my guys like in stock so I stocked up. I’ll admit that $15 of the $65 I spent at the Co-op was cookies. GF cookies – GF baked goods of any kind – are expensive and we’re getting to the time of year where I really don’t want to have the oven on baking my own. I didn’t see a single masked person, other than me, anywhere I went. Sigh.

Talked to Fineena last night. She’s in pain and not happy where she is. Nothing new there. She saw a different doctor yesterday, one who wasn’t happy about a large spot he saw on her most recent MRI or brain scan (she used the terms interchangeably so I’m not sure which it actually was). She’s getting more confused about time-related things. I wish they’d take her back to the hospice. As best she knows/I can tell she’s not getting cancer treatment at all and the treatment for her diabetes is iffy since she won’t eat most of what they serve her. (Aashirs nani lookd the place up. It’s got a good rating for physical therapy and nursing staff, a lousy rating for other staff and food. It’s not Fineena’s imagination.) Last I heard/she knows she’s supposed to see the oncologist again next week.

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  7. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 59 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 88. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It says “partly sunny” right now but the clouds are all over the mountains – it is sunny here. Last night there was definitely some rain somewhere, the clouds were dark over the mountains and there were some very tall thunderheads. I could smell the rain but I don’t think any landed nearby. In the early morning hours, I thought I heard a few raindrops in the fireplace chimney (it makes a tinging sound) but everything looks dry this morning. It is too early for monsoon season so I am not sure what that was all about!

I am glad that Joe Biden is doing a deal with TFG for debates and bypassing the supposed Nonpartisan Commission. He is right, they kowtowed to tRump in 2020 and refused to enforce their own COVID rules putting everyone at risk. Plus, if it is run by the broadcast sites, you know their biases and can deal with them – the supposed “neutral” moderators of the commission are given a figleaf and permission to be lying piles of garbage. I hope he sticks to his demand that there be no live audiences. Audiences are a distraction and an annoyance. My money is on “the debates never take place” as tRump realizes that Biden will eat his lunch.

I took a few too many days off and one of the projects I had put on the back burner came to a full boil and needs my attention.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good morning, 54 and cloudy in my garden today. I’m hoping for rain so I won’t have to water the garden. I have a few flowers to plant but I’m not very inspired this year. Sue will be here soon so it’s a housekeeping day. Best wishes to all.

  9. Good morning. Walked my mile (actually 1.35), it’s lovely & cool. Had big scary storms yesterday — we were looking out the window at work at 4pm & could barely see a block. And there’s lots of damage in Houston. But the news has to talk about nothing but the trial. Sigh.

    • I was watching that big blob of angry yellows and reds over Houston on my cable weather channel yesterday! It was ginormous and not moving very quickly. I hope there was no loss of life.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 60 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 91. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The weather folks are saying that we might see 100 on Saturday but that is at the airport – it is cooler in the foothills where I live. I am not quite ready for triple digits but I think it is later than it was last year.

Who is surprised that Coathanger Sam Alito is a treasonous bastid as well as a pile of garbage who hates women and most other human beings? If the other Justices had any sense, they would isolate him and his craziness as a way to recover some of their legitimacy. Law Dork wrote an interesting article about the SCOTUS opinion issued yesterday that left Alito and Gorsucks as the lone dissenters in a case where the clear historical precedent was to favor what Congress did in setting up the CFPB funding. The opinion was written by Thomas and ticked off Alito who clearly wants to set up SCOTUS as the overrider of any good government policies passed by a Democratic Congress and as a protector of malfeasance by Republican presidents.

I got one long overdue important task done this morning and I have to resist thinking that I can ignore the rest of my to-do list because of that. I need to get a few more things done. The first round of the NCAA Softball Tournament begins today and I would like to have time to sit and watch some of the games without having unfinished projects hanging over me.

    See all y’all later!

    • (Shudder) I remember that feeling. It’s the same feeling that one used to get in one’s schooldays, when homework either wasn’t finished or not done at all.

  11. It’s 64 heading for 76 and overcast. The PV system’s on but so are the inside lights. Yesterday we generated 6.79 KWHs and the m-t-d at 222.79 is on track for 400 but losing ground.

    No news from anybody. Hoping that’s at least not bad even if it’s not good. That’s at the personal level. On the national and international level there’s nothing but bad news. Huge evil – war crimes against humans, animals, & the planet – that we are aiding & abetting where we aren’t the instigators ourselves. And there’s not a gee dee thing I can do about it. So I guess I’ll start my boosting day and hope some good comes from that. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  12. Good Friday morning, Moosekind. Whereas yesterday was quite beautiful, if a little too windy for my taste, today is ugly-cloudy, with a temp. of 64 F. It won’t get much higher. The good part is that the woods are looking very lush and green, as if they’re welcoming summer in.

Yesterday evening I went to the post-card writing party (a four-minute walk across the Common), and found the room packed when I arrived. However, we weren’t doing postcards to Virginia voters before the primary next month, as I’d imagined. Instead, we were writing to voters in Tucson, urging them to vote for Reuben Gallego! Apparently, although people love the fact that the cost of insulin is capped at $35 per month, they don’t know that Democrats are responsible for this. The postcards, which will be mailed 5 days before the primary, made that clear.

Saw a couple of people from my building there, as well as several others I recognized. However, as we were writing, someone let off a couple of silent but very smelly eructations, and someone across from me coughed her lungs out. I stood it long enougb to write seven postcards, then decamped hastily. Gods! However, my reward when I reached the fresh air was the sight of Herself, cheerily shining overhead in her half-dressed state. Today will be too cloudy for Her to appear and they’re predicting rain during the wee hours of the night.

Not much else is happening. At the Mystery Book Club no one could guess my subject, so I finally had to tell them it was George Harrison. It was quite a good session, with six of us present.

Those who don’t watch morning news shows missed a clip of Ugly Republicans Behaving Badly, wherein MTG ridiculed a Congresswoman across the aisle for her false eyelashes. And Alito’s upside-down flag—interestingly, he threw his wife under the bus, saying it was all her fault. Uh-huh.

Wishing a nice, quiet day to all at the Pond.

  13. Saturday Meese. Cloudy here today and no rain – am going to spend part of the day painting the yard furniture which looks pretty raggedy.

    Puerto Rico

    BREAKING- Former representative @pnp_pr
María Milagros “Tata” Charbonier is sentenced to eight years in prison (96 months).

  14. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 64 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 97. Sunny skies are in the forecast. After today’s temperature spike we will return to the more normal lower 90s. We will still have overnight lows in the 60s. I have not seem the moon since the day before the new moon. She rises when the sun is shining and I don’t have a good vantage point to see her in the short time between when it is dark and when I am in bed. She is already at 77% – I need to make a point of going outdoors and seeing her.

A string of busy client-focused days has ended and I can control my schedule again. I have a number of things that have been waiting for some big blocks of uninterrupted time and I will be working on those today. The college softball team I am rooting for won yesterday and will be playing today. You have to win three games to advance to the next round and the next two games won’t be easy. They are looking good, though.

    See all y’all later!

    • Heads up, meeses! I am going to take some time later today to update the web site to the next version of WordPress and to update all the add-ons. We have been getting a lot of “508 Resource Limit Is Reached – The website is temporarily unable to service your request as it exceeded resource limit. Please try again later” errors lately and I want to make sure it is not an out of date add-on or the core WordPress being out of date. I will wait until the morning rush is over and run the WP update after 10am Eastern Time.

I am also going to deactivate the Mastodon feed because Mastodon simply does not look like it will ever become the go-to Twitter replacement and it is simply a drag on the site. The most promising replacement is BlueSky and it does not have the API tools for shares, feeds or links so it is not ready to be part of the Moose experience.

Finally, the hosting for the Motley Moose website renewed early this month and I am in the process of researching alternatives. I always think about it when it is too late to switch and then the renewal is a reminder. There are other hosting firms that specialize in WordPress hosting and would probably be a better fit for us. Our current hosting may be the reason we get the errors – we have had some issues with them in the past.

I will repeat this message with updates on Sunday morning so that everyone is kept up to date.

      Thanks for your patience!

      • {{{Jan}}} Bless you for doing all the techie work to keep the Moose Pond going. Please let us know if there are site fees we can help with. You’re already doing all the work.

  15. Good Saturday morning, Meese! It was raining heavily when I woke up at 6:30 and it continued to rain heavily for the next two hours. I don’t mind, because we are only very slightly over par for May rainfall and it’s good to have a cushion. Right now the temperature is 61 F. in Ashburn, and likely to stay in the low 60s.

Breakfast has been had. I keep meaning to call Fineena, but I have a unfortunate habit of falling asleep in my chair after dinner. Perhaps today will be different.

Today there’s a meeting of the Drama Club at 2, several pieces of the anthology selections to edit, and Slow Cooker Chicken Soup to make. I believe that will be enough to keep me off the streets and out of the pool halls.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, and a faster-than-expected recovery for poor old Houston. Imagine not having any power for days or weeks. How many of us have solar lanterns, battery-powered radios, and so forth? Life without electricity—prolonged life, that is—would probably mean a descent into barbarism.

  16. It’s 65 heading for 85 and sunny. And supposed to be all day. We shall see. Yesterday we generated 12.5 KWHs and lost some more ground. But the m-t-d at 235.3 is still on track for 400. Maybe we can gain some ground today before the clouds move back in Monday.

Talked to Fineena last night for a few minutes. She got a letter from “the front office” late in the afternoon telling her she had to leave by Tuesday. Apparently she’s reached the limit on Medicare for staying in hospital. Of course they gave it to her on a Friday late in the day when the Social Work office was closing. She left word to let them know. Whether they got it in time to do anything before Monday she’s not sure. Somebody came by to tell her she’s got options but didn’t tell her what they were before they went off to “copy something” and didn’t come back. Meanwhile all the doctors are adamant that she not go home.

    No news from anybody else. I’ve got a load of firewood coming this morning. Probably the last. I think 4 loads will get me through next winter. I hope. Anyway, off to start my boosting. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  17. Good morning, 47 and partly sunny outside my window today. The light shining through the new leaves on my old maple trees is lovely to see. My sister and our son were here for dinner last night so I’m weary this morning. It was a nice evening with simple food but still more standing than I can comfortable do so I’ll be careful today. My sister goes home tomorrow. Best wishes to all.

  18. Good morning. Home from my workout. Posted my fundraising links. Got to get to work on my chores. No point in watching the news, it’s tfg’s trial all day every day.
