Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 23rd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 77 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 100. Mostly sunny skies with a slight chance of late afternoon rain. The moon is not visible here until very late at night and in the morning it is too cloudy to see her before she disappears over the horizon. I am hoping to catch a glimpse this weekend when she aligns better with my location.

In order to successfully ignore the presidential “debate”, I will have to start today in the run-up to the media event. So I am going news-lite and will focus on sports and local news.

    See all y’all later!

  2. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s 84 F. at the moment, on its way up to 99 F. The weather jesters are predicting thunderstorms at 2 p.m., and they may well happen, somewhere. Just not in Ashburn, where we’re already 3 inches under normal rainfall for the month. I’m going to start researching rain spells.

I’m off to an event at Democratic HQ at noon today—America’s Dad, Tim Kaine, is supposed to be there. Got a pile of desk work to get through, also some laundry.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  3. Good morning, 59 and cloudy with rain later today. My friend didn’t feel well enough for a visit yesterday so I napped and read book #5 in The Time Police series. Jodi Taylor’s books are entertaining light reading, but with enough substance to be interesting. The “ghost train” theme became a bit annoying but the books are short and given my memory I’ll soon forget what bothered me! Best wishes to all.

  4. Good morning. I walked, and that felt fine, what doesn’t is sitting in my office chair. Lucky I get to leave early for the nurse to change my dressing. My diary last night bombed. Only 8 comments. I really thought people would be excited about a fun way to raise money for GOTV.

  5. It’s 70 going up to 91 heat index mostly the same. PV system is down. I did finally reach the installer. Or rather I found an email reply from the installer when I got online this morning timestamped 9:16 last night. He tried to do a remote check but nope. He’s not sure when he can get to me (ahem!) but will let me know today. And this morning my big computer is dead. No power light even. Thank All That’s Holy my laptop is working – and basket updated it when he was here. It’s going to take a little getting used to but at least I’m online. I haven’t reached Fineena in 2 days. If I don’t reach her tonight I’ll check and see if Joker has. If not, I’ll call Matthews itself. Now I’d best get to my boosting day. Holding the Good Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 78 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 102. Sunny skies are in the forecast with a small chance of rain in the late afternoon.

I will not watch the debate – life is too short. First, I won’t watch CNN or CNN news readers, they are dead to me after refusing to fire the Kamala birther news reader and for providing a free platform for nazis to take over our government in 2016. I just finished watching the (Dee recommended) Amazon video “Power of the Dream” and it ripped the scab off of all terrible things that happened in 2016, the entire tRump maladministration and the awful summer of 2020. It was a great documentary and I recommend it – it did have a happy ending – but it was tough to watch some of it. I have a new appreciation for the sacrifices Black woman athletes made to literally save democracy.

I had to take my walk indoors yesterday because I missed the sweet spot for outdoor walks. I finished my early morning hot project and I just need to make some notes and then I can head outside.

    See all y’all later!

  7. Good Thursday morning, Meese! Today it’s already 76 F., going up to 89 F. The sky is a pale, soft, almost Canadian-looking blue, because the white veils of cloud make the light look silvery. We did not get the severe thunderstorms They predicted last night, no lightning, no thunder, nothing like that, but we did get some rain about 10 p.m. I went out onto the porch to listen to it falling. Good show.

Yesterday I had back-to-back meetings, so I totally missed my afternoon rest. My upstairs neighbor and I drove to Northern Virginia Democratic HQ together and saw quite a few people. I had my picture taken with Senator Kaine! He liked my t-shirt, which displayed a picture of Thomas Jefferson and the legend: “Oh, crap! That’s due tomorrow?” Thomas Jefferson, July 3, 1776. We listened to all the freshly elected people who emphasized that, although every election is important, this time democracy itself is on the ballot.

Good neighbor dropped me off at Willow Crossing, which is three buildings over from where I live, for my next meeting. It turned out I was early. The only person there, also early, was the impressive, even rather intimidating Kate. Every time I see her, I want to burst into some version of Petruchio’s speech: “Good morrow, Kate! You are called Kate the Fair and Kate the Rich and sometimes Kate the Shrew. But Kate, you are the prettiest Kate in Christendom…” She’s really tall and has a background in dramatic arts that puts the rest of us to shame.
Anyway, the leader of the Play Selection Group turned up, as did a fellow with an outsize ego, and C., whom I like very much. She thought “Risque Rendezvous,” my skit, was hilarious and has scheduled its presentation for the August meeting. If only my fellow actor’s wife would relent and let him play the role of Nigel!

Well, enough about that. Bored yet? Today I’m going to a meeting of the actors and directors of “Clue,” a play the Audiovisual department wants to put on. None of us has received a script, so this should be quite puzzling!

The black cartridge has arrived—yay! And yes, I will watch the debate for as long as I can stand it. If I begin to feel nauseated, I’ll leave the room. Dearly is a glutton for punishment, he’ll sit through anything.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond! Still sending healing white light to the Meese who need it. A la prochaine, Meese!

  8. Good morning, 55 and cloudy, but the rain is watering the garden so no complaints. I am finally addressing the state of my sewing room, yikes! I’ve kept the piles sorted but there are a lot of them. I know I will want to see what happens with the debates but just seeing tRump’s face triggers angst so I’ll avoid as best I can. Best wishes to all.

    • tRump’s face and voice both trigger me. I had hoped to not have to listen to it or see it after he was defeated in 2020. Now I have to watch the news with the mute button again. :(

  9. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 78 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 102. Sunny skies are in the forecast. There are a few tall clouds over the mountains. Yesterday parts of the valley saw rain – we did not.

I did not watch the debate and will only scan the post-debate commentary. I am pretty sure that Joe Biden has never been a great debater because of his lifelong slippery grasp on facts; it is unlikely he got better with age. tRump is a pathological liar and perennial showman and craves cameras. Anyone who thought that Biden would look better was delusional. It is probably good to get this “debate” out of the way sooner rather than later. There is plenty of time to remind people that it is important to vote for the guy who won’t destroy democracy even if he is a poor debater and let himself get overrun by Gish gallop.

I have many things to do today as this is the last business day of June.

    See all y’all later!

  10. Good morning. Another day of just walking, I did run a teeny bit, but I’m afraid to irritate the stitches. They don’t come out till the 8th, though — so I’m going to have to run some with them. Didn’t watch the debate, don’t care, voting blue all the way up & down ballot no matter what. I know what the Project 2025 people wanted to do & will if we give them another chance. As Taylor Swift says: I was there, I remember it all too well.

  11. It’s 71 no heat index heading for 94 heat index 100 and overcast. Which doesn’t make any difference not with my PV system down. I didn’t get the ~22 KWHs I would have gotten yesterday and I won’t get the more probable 16 today. sigh. I tried plugging in the desktop again this morning. Nada. So I devoutly hope using the laptop 10 hours a day isn’t going to burn it out too.

I did reach Fineena last night. I can’t say things are good but she’s still here and able to talk on the phone for a little bit at a time.

    I’ve about half an hour before I need to close up the house. And not open it again for about a week if the forecast is correct. The cats will not be happy. Oh well. I’m not happy I’m running A/C and not generating anything to cover it. Double sigh. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  12. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s 73 F. at the moment, going up to 86 F. later. The early morning clouds have cleared off. It’s humid and frightfully buggy outside, though.

At 7 a.m. I threw on some clothes, rammed a hat on my head, and sailed out to join the jolly crew putting up Gay Pride flags on Great Oak Common. The ground was as hard as rocks—in fact it was grass-covered rock—so we had to stab the earth with screwdrivers, then put the flags in. Our AV guy, bless his heart, showed up an hour before his workday began to take a picture of us. We have to keep an eye on our heart-shaped arrangement of Rainbow Flags and call Security if we see Puritans trying to take the flags down. Last year they objected to 200 Gay Pride flags in front of the other clubhouse, so the flags came down. Now this year we’ve put up 600 flags on the Common between TWO clubhouses!

A retired Baptist minister was one of the people helping to put up the flags. She’s a good sort.

Oh, gods, I couldn’t watch last night. After a few minutes of feeling my blood pressure rise because the loathsome Jake Tapper and Dana Bash addressed Thing as “President,” and listening to him NOT get called on his lies, I simply left the room and went to bed with Thomas Jefferson, or rather, his biography.

I totally need to get back to editing today, but will break off at 2 for the Gay Pride event. We’ll assemble on Great Oak Common for the drone to fly over and take our picture, filling up the heart shape. Then there will be punch and cupcakes in Great Oak Clubhouse. I’ll bring a cupcake home to Dearly but won’t eat one myself as I’m still trying to lose weight.

Like our friend anotherdemocrat, I’m voting blue up and down ticket, so the “debate” makes no difference to me.

Wishing a good Gay Pride Day to all at the Pond! Stay kewl, y’all!

  13. Good morning, 55 and cloudy in Bellingham today. My house is quiet and clean and Bri will be here to work in the garden with me this afternoon so all’s well in my small world. But after last nights alarming “debate” I feel so unsettled. I will vote to preserve our democracy but what ever happens is way beyond my ability to make much of a difference. Best wishes to all.

    Simon Rosenberg……

Joe Biden did not have a good night last night. But a few things remain true as we dust ourselves off this morning:

Joe Biden is a good President. The country is better off. We have a very strong case for re-election

The Democratic Party is strong, winning elections across the country, raising tons of money, blessed with a very strong farm team and building the most powerful political machine we’ve ever seen

And they still have Trump – rapist, fraudster, traitor, felon – who was so manifestly unfit, so full of lies, so extreme and dangerous, so, how do we say it? – batshit crazy – last night that it remains hard to believe many hours later.

  14. Saturday Meese. 65 here in Kingston going up to only 78. Which is lovely.
Keeping a close watch on the storm that is gaining strength in the Caribbean

  15. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 78 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 100. Mostly sunny skies with a chance of afternoon rain. I would not want to be a weather forecaster here – the weather really just does what it wants to during monsoon season. Yesterday, the weather guys were adamant that we would not get any rain or storms. Lo and behold, around 4pm, high winds, thunder and then rain. Granted, it did not rain much and like most monsoon rains it was noisy but quick. But it did happen. I suppose if you get on the TV and say “might rain, might not” people would wonder how you can expect to collect a paycheck.

I hope that the more reasoned commentary the day after the “debate” put out some of the hairs on fire. I was surprised, at first, to see the editorial from the New York Times saying that Joe Biden needs to be replaced. Then I wasn’t surprised – the NY Times owners despise successful Democrats and miss Donald J. Trump who sells newspapers. They should be embarrassed to have become this. I did not click on the editorial – I don’t click on trash – just like I don’t click on Nate Silver’s “predictions” any longer. They stopped being useful when he infused his polls with his world view. I click on the New York Times for news but avoid the cesspool of their editorial page their corrupt ownership and management has created.

I have two June days left and will spend at least part of today getting a good to-do list in place. A lot of projects last month were started and stopped because of emergency projects that inserted themselves and I need to pick up the threads and weave them into a to-do list.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good morning. My group is meeting at a park out of town, so I’ll go to the gym this afternoon. Watching Le Tour. Going to pick up my groceries, cook next week’s lunch and this evening I’m meeting my old college boyfriend for dinner.

  17. It was 80 heat index 88 when I got up. No, I didn’t open the house. Not having a daily PV report feels odd. I wish the installer was better at keeping me posted. I also wish I had a backup. But there are no other SolarEdge installers in the area. (I checked.) Using the laptop instead of the desktop feels worse than odd. The angle of my hands & arms to type on it is different and right now they’re aching as they get used to it again. I did reach Fineena last night for a few minutes. Nothing new – that she could remember anyway. I may try calling her earlier in the day. I’m catching her half asleep calling at 8 pm eastern time. Anyway, I’d best get to my boosting. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  18. Good morning, 55 and sunny outside my windows today. I enjoyed some garden therapy yesterday, and tending to plants while (mostly) seated is getting easier. The garden is still recovering from the winter storm damage but it has taken a lot of work. I hope to go to a nursery today to look for some laurel and hydrangea plants to replace the plants that didn’t make it. Best wishes to all.
