Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 30th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 78 degrees in the Desert Southwest ???? with an expected daytime high of 104. Mostly sunny skies with a chance for afternoon rain and thunderstorms.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. Weather is great here today – I’m keeping my eyes on the hurricane in the Caribbean!

    • Dear Goddess, Sis, I hope no one gets hurt. I’m FB friends with Dennis Mersereau and he started warning us about Beryl several days ago.

  3. Good morning. I think I’ve got bandaging my stitches figured out. It’s really awkward, but I think I was successful this morning. Anyway — tea is steeping, I’m starting my lunch for next week — my neighbor brought me some fresh basil so I’ll include that, and watching local news. There’s a lot less Biden angst on local news.

    • Good about the bandage and good about the less emphasis on Biden.

      Why doesn’t anyone mention that the convicted felon should step down? You know, the adjudicated rapist, the senile question-dodger…

      I DESPISE the media!

  4. It’s 82/90 heading for 90/100. Overcast which is depressing but not maddening because I don’t have a working PV system to worry about how much would or wouldn’t get generated. We’re ending June with 438.27 KWHs. Goddess knows what, if anything, we’ll get in July.

    I seem to have a soporific effect on Fineena. She has trouble sleeping but after about 5 minutes of talking with her she starts to drift off. I hope she can actually stay asleep after she gets off the phone.

    I’m overheated from doing the vacuuming and going out to get milk. But the A/C hasn’t kicked on yet so the house isn’t as warm as I feel. Anyway, time to get on my boosting chores. I’m actually, sort of, getting used to using the laptop again. LOL. Holding the Good Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

      • Yes. It died the day after the inverter did. Weird. But bless him, basket updated everything on my laptop when he was here so it’s good. Smaller screen is harder to read. And the angle I have to have my arms/wrists/hands at for typing is stressful but I’m getting used to it. I just have to take more frequent breaks. Which is probably good for me anyway. {{{Diana}}}

        • You should be able to plug your monitor, keyboard and mouse into your laptop and just use it as the “cpu box”. If you shove it to the side, just be sure to keep it open as most laptops turn off when you close the lid. The only problem might be if the laptop does not have a connector for your monitor – it depends on the age of your hardware. Most new laptops and monitors use HDMI connections but even some of the older monitors use HDMI. If you are just missing the cable you can a pretty inexpensive one on Amazon or BestBuy/Staples/OfficeDepotMax. It probably does not need to be very long.

          • There’s not enough room on the desk to have the laptop open and have everything plugged into it. I do have an external mouse. There’s no way I’d even try to use the mouse pad. LOL. But thanks.

          • The laptop can be mostly folded closed and set up on its short edge and tucked away behind the monitor. You would need less than 5 inches of space. There are also settings on the laptop (in the power settings) that let you close the laptop completely. Then it can be on the floor leaned up against your desk leg; the settings are tricky and you might want to wait until someone can help you with that.

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! Dearly has had a proper breakfast and is now happily watching the Formula I race. It’s currently 82 F. with cloudy skies, going up to 92 F. Guess what, when I woke up at 6 a.m., it was raining quietly! Dearly reported hearing thunder (he has excellent hearing, unlike yrs truly), and seeing flashes of lightning in the wee hours.

    Severe storms are supposed to happen this afternoon at 4 p.m., but of course, they won’t happen HERE.

    Yesterday was busy because we thought the carpet cleaners were coming. They never showed. Dearly rang up several times: they may come tomorrow. Anyway, in the mistaken belief they would show up, I did morning chores, went to the gym, got my hair done, and did a little shopping for Dearly’s Sunday breakfast.

    Last night we had dinner with one of the writers in my class and his delightful wife. They are so progressive it even puts me to shame. I love seeing people well into their eighties teaching karate, attending events like the Gay Pride Celebration, and knitting caps for newborn babies’ little bald heads. The dinner consumed TWO HOURS, leaving us all furious, and they brought the wrong vegetables for T. The “raspberry ice cream” turned out to be raspberry sorbet. First-world problems!

    Today I still have to go to the gym, do laundry, do some more editing, and make oatmeal-walnut cookies in case Trevor comes to tea. He’s going to a Japanese friend’s house for the Fourth. Barbecued eel, anyone? Eric is having us over for the Fourth, so it will wonderful to see him just two days after his birthday on the 2nd.

    So, so sick of The Blather about Biden stepping down. On Twitter someone said the “concern” about Biden’s age is related to the color of Kamala Harris’ skin. Imagine a woman president! (Gasp) Imagine a Black woman president! (Grateful eyes turned toward heaven) Black women saved this country in 2020 when they made clear who the Democratic nominee should be. And I, one among many, have been surprised and gratified about how well he’s done.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  6. Good afternoon, 70, sunny and a light breeze blowing in my open window. I’ve had a slow quiet day, but now I’m restless so I’m going to do a few things in the garden. We had a successful trip to a nursery yesterday so I have a few begonias, ferns and coleus to plant, but the big laurel and hydrangea will wait until next week when I have help. We have removed so much winter kill from the plants this year it’s nice to start filling the bare spots with new plants.

    RonK is cooking some greek food so the house smells tasty and Sunday supper with our son and Elsa and then watching The House of The Dragon will fill the rest of the day. Best wishes to all.

  7. Monday Meese. 62 going up to 78 here in Kingston. Am focused on Hurricane Beryl atm – please put the folks in the Caribbean in your prayers

    • They are predicting a nasty year for hurricanes. Goddess help those who will be left with nothing and no hope with a hateful Republican House of Representatives holding the purse strings through another hurricane season. And the paper towel guy a threat to win back the presidency.

  8. Good morning. Did my walk, in the office watching Le Tour on my kindle. Short week, they gave us Friday as well as Thursday. Bracing for the SCOTUS decision.

    • From what we have seen of the Alito Court, the only possible outcome is that they declare presidents to be immune from criminal prosecution for anything they do while holding the office. The only questions are if they declare them immune for pre-presidential and post-presidential crimes as well or say the quiet part out loud and declare that the immunity is only for Republican presidents. We can call this the Richard Nixon Ruling – that “when the president does it, that means that it is not illegal.” We will be left reading the Sotomayor dissent as we weep and wondering if Bernie Freaking Sanders and Ralph Freaking Nader enjoy what they and their “Republicans and Democrats are the same” cult have done to America.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 73 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 99. It is cloudy now, will clear in the late morning then cloud up again with a chance for rain later in the afternoon. I heard gentle rain last night.

    It’s July already! How did that happen? I need to work on accounting projects before I do anything else; last year I let them stack up and and it was 10 times more difficult.

    See all y’all later!

  10. It’s 78 heading for 92 heat index 99 and sunny. Still haven’t heard back from the installer. I just sent him an email asking for a progress report. We’ll see if he ignores that too. As my son pointed out yesterday, if he’s busy doing stuff that makes him money he’s likely to put something that takes his time and doesn’t make money (my system is still under warranty) on the back burner. Sigh.

    Irony or something but my laptop keyboard is much easier to type on – as far as my hands are concerned. It’s harder on my arms and back because it’s higher up by a couple of inches – sitting on a special laptop cooling stand (grid to sit on and a fan inside so underneath where the laptop heats up) and I don’t have a lower table I could use for my desk. I miss my number pad but I don’t do any “power” entry any longer and I can live with it. Or rather without it. Hopefully it’s just an issue of my muscles getting used to new positions and all that. Anyway, time to get to my daily boosting. Holding the Good Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Good Monday morning–it is still morning–Moosekind! We woke up to temps. in the 60s and a blue and gold day, but it is VERY WINDY! So windy, in fact, that it blew my poor little basket of petunias right off its stand! I’ve now put the petunias on a lower stand and watered them so as to cheer them up.

    Younger Son came to tea with the family yesterday. I gave DIL most of the oatmeal-walnut cookies, of which 10-year-old Mr. Karl ate nine while he was here–because I knew if I kept them I’d eat them all. They’re too delicious for words.

    Still have lots of editing to do while waiting for the carpet cleaners. Perhaps I’ll make a cup of tea. I’m on tenterhooks waiting for the Supremes to rule. I’m afraid it won’t be good.

    On the other hand, I feel quite cheery about Biden’s prospects. If he’s in such trouble with the electorate, how is it he raised $33 million after the debate? And it’s more than boobajugger raised.

    I think I’ll make a cup of tea before I start editing. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, and may Beryl sweep out to sea, sparing the Caribbean!

  12. Good morning, 63 and mostly cloudy. My soon to be former medical clinic has now been bought my yet another health care company, Optum and the first lab appointment I can schedule is for mid July. I need to get a blood test today so I’ll have to find a way. I’ve found a new doc but I don’t see him until July 19th and then I will be referred to a different coagulation clinic but until then I seem to be on my own. If I know the test numbers I can manage the dosage but I can’t get to a lab without a referral, sigh. Oh well, life does go on regardless. Best wishes to all.

  13. Tuesday Meese. 55 here in Kingston going up to a sunny 83. Keeping a close watch on Hurricane Beryl as it is now a Cat5 storm and heading towards Jamaica. Looking to see what relief agencies will be assisting those already hard hit.

    Puerto Rico

    RIP Dylcia – who I grew up with.

  14. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! We woke up to 62 F. delightful WINDLESS degrees, blue skies, and sunshine.

    Today is Elder Son’s 54th birthday, so I’ll be off to Arlington to look after soon-to-be-9 years old Ethan (born Lammas Eve), and the two doggies. We can play pirates and look for treasure. Also have a storybook for him to read to me. I think Elder Son and DIL plan to go somewhere for a special lunch.

    Sigh. I’ve always been so proud of this country for not having a hereditary aristocracy, a useless and expensive royal family, and an official state religion. Now look what we’ve become. Isn’t it time for an alien invasion? They could snatch up the six bad Supremes and Thing, perform delicate surgery on their nasal membranes on the spaceship, and whisk them off to another planet.

    Have sent healing white light to princesspat, anotherdemocrat, and bfitz. Also to Fineena, of course. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  15. Good morning. Going to log off early & get the dermatologist’s office to have them put on a bandage. And go to the gym for a walk on the treadmill. SCOTUS. Sigh. Bought this in the Romancing the Vote auction yesterday — it’s a buy it now item so if there’s any left, you can buy one, too:

  16. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 77 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 100. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast, chance for rain in the late afternoon. Yesterday afternoon, we saw massive thunderclouds to the northeast over the mountains – the Town of Oracle got quite a bit of monsoon activity. This morning I saw the lovely waning crescent moon, with the morning star beneath her, over the mountains. The faint dawn light was to the left of her.

    The SCOTUS decision on presidential immunity was not as bad as I expected. They left the opening for a lower court to decide what is an official act and what is a personal act (like a crime related to campaign activity like Nixon’s break-in). Of course the devil will be in the details – in the end will they ever concede that ordering the Justice Department to declare the election fraudulent is clearly personal? Or that colluding with members of Congress and the vice president to discard the results of the electoral college was solely to stay in office? I guess we will find out. There will be no trial before the election which is actually good news since tRump will not be able to drag his crucifix around complaining about the injustice – and fundraise off of it. The trial was only going to be a free campaign ad for him and an acquittal would have been a very big problem. NOW we need to make sure that Biden gets re-elected so that trial can take place after the election. The biggest problem was that the moves to make tRump accountable for the January 6th attack on the Capitol took too damn long. The charges should have been made sooner and the trial held last year. The wheels of justice grind exceedingly slow for white guys with fancy lawyers.

    I have a project that needs to be finished this morning so I will leave my news-reading for the afternoon.

    See all y’all later!

  17. It’s 79 heading for 97 heat index 107 sunny and the sun is quite hot on one’s skin already. Laundry’s out. One cat still is. I hope I can get him in soon. I got Rennie because he was already panting enough to let me. Freddie was panting too but he took off when I tried to get him. sigh.

    New issue. The laptop charger is overheating – and taking longer to recharge either because of it or causing it. And I purely don’t know what to do. I can cool it down with an icepack. But that doesn’t solve the core issue. I’m trying to run fewer things – no more music in the background while I work, keeping few windows open at a time. But heck, I don’t know enough to know which – keeping windows open or opening and closing as I need them – uses less power/battery. I also don’t know if plugging in the charger until it gets too hot then unplugging it will trash it and the battery. Sigh. And I still haven’t heard back from the PV installer.

    Well, as long as I have a working computer, I guess I’ll get to my boosting chores. Holding the Good Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Laptop batteries and chargers are notorious for behaving badly. You can usually download software from the computer manufacturer to monitor heat and charge and very often it will keep the charge at the right level and tell you if the battery (or adapter is bad). You will probably have to wait for help to download and configure it.

      I am not sure about an icepack – I personally try to keep liquid things away from electrical things. Maybe you can Google a better solution.

      • Thank you. I’ll see what I can do/see who I can find to help. B/c you’re correct, it’s not something I can do myself. LOL. This is one of those cloth-covered icepacks for athletic injuries. I also am wary about water around electronics.

  18. Good morning, 59 and mostly cloudy outside my windows today. I was able to get a lab test yesterday and as I suspected my warfarin level was to low so now to gently increase the dosage and then retest in 2 weeks. A nurse at my soon to be former clinic got me in yesterday and manually scheduled me for my next visit so the new computer and phone answering system would not interfere. I will stay with the clinic I have now until I see the new doc and I hope he will have easier access to care.

    I’ll have help planting the new plants today, nice to have some gardening therapy to ease the scotus/tRump angst that’s overwhelming me yet again. Best wishes to all.
