Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 30th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning. Going to the dermatologist this morning to get them to bandage the stitches, the area feels irritated. Work today will be just answering emails then watching webinars till I’m fed up. I got all my new applications set up yesterday. Very upset with my usual favorite representative, Lloyd Doggett, who called for Biden to drop out.

    • I saw that statement by Doggett and wondered how you felt about it! I know he is one of your favorites. I simply don’t understand why people can’t see how foolish it would be to change nominees after the primaries. When Barack Obama looked bored and tired in his first debate with Mitt Romney, people were worried then, too. The only one who thought he should be replaced on the ticket was Bernie Freaking Sanders.

      • I also used to think Doggett was a good guy, doggone it! But after that little outburst, I wish his tent would collapse and a gang of thieves will steal all his camels.

    • Very surprised at Lloyd Doggett. He’s been in politics a long time. He’s got to remember what happens when a sitting president drops out even before the primaries. (We got Tricky Dick.) Or even is seriously primaried. (We got Ronnie Raygun.) I don’t LIKE Joe Biden. I was pleasantly surprised at his 1st year in office and have been pissed off since he started walking all of it back. And totally outraged that he is supporting the genocide in Gaza just because it’s Israel doing the genociding. But Biden dropping out guarantees an R president – even if the evil one dropped out too.

  2. Wednesday Meese. 66 here and going up to a sunny 85. Neighbors are already trying out their damned fireworks. Ugh!

    Beryl

    • I hate the fireworks. Here it is insane because an errant bottle rocket could start a wildfire. There are rules about their use, of course, but no one follows them because no one enforces them. Grrr!

      • One of the nice things about living here is that no one lets off fireworks. I used to have to put poor Monty into Healthy Hound Playground for the night of July 4. The owner played classical music to the dogs to calm them down.

  3. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 78 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 104. Sunny skies in the morning, clouds and chance of rain this afternoon and into the evening. Yesterday, we were at 106 and the monsoon winds blew a small storm into the valley and it cooled it down to 93 in about 15 minutes. This morning when I stood on my deck, there was a cool breeze!

I see that the New York Times and their vindictive publisher is determined to scare the bejebus out of everyone about Joe Biden. Fk them with a rusty anvil!! Tired 81 year old guy is better than criminal malignant narcissist Hitler wannabe hands down. The NYT desperately wants another tRump administration to sell papers and fluff up their tRump loving writers like Haberman and Nate Silver. Grrr.

I had a project to do early and I am waiting for a client to respond to a question so that I can close down and take my walk before it gets too hot. Yesterday I walked on the treadmill and may be stuck doing that again. Not my favorite.

    See all y’all later!

  4. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s 77 F. here in Ashburger, on its way up to 89 F. Lovely blue skies, just like yesterday.

Went over to Elder Son’s house yesterday to look after my sulky grandson. After we both donned pirate headgear and false moustaches, we first “hid” the treasure, then retrieved it and wrapped it. It was presents for Daddy’s birthday. Ethan was not happy because he wanted to go with the family next door to their cabin for six days. Mommy said no. I agree. A couple of days would be one thing, but six days for a child who isn’t even 9 yet—nupe.

Just went to http://www.whitehouse.gov and left comments, urging President Biden NOT to drop out! It’s Thing who should drop out for the good of the country. Gods, how I LOATHE and DESPISE the media! The WaPo has become unreadable since it became a skinny right-wing rag and got rid of all my favorite columnists.

I’m going over to a Drama Club member’s apartment to watch a video of her giving a presentation years ago. It was so popular she was asked to give it twice. She wants me to write another monologue for her about a different woman.

Sent my July essay to my writers. They may be shocked since I was not very nice about Thomas Jefferson. No wonder he suffered debilitating migraines—the conflict between his aspirations that all “men” should be free and equal and his behavior in his personal life must have really set up some internal fireworks in his head.

Been missing my daughter so much that last night we had one of our marathon conversations by phone. She loves living in Massachusetts, although she does miss her family and friends in Texas. She is so funny and adorable! Goddess willing, perhaps this will be the year we meet again.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. Jan, if I post my essay later today and people don’t like it, I can always take it down, right?

  5. It’s 84, heat index 94, and never got below 80 overnight. The A/C kicked on 10 minutes ago. Internet was down until 10 minutes ago, too. And still no word from the PV installer. I have not got clue number one what to do besides leaving voicemails and sending emails – neither of which does he respond to. Ozark Solar is a small business and he’s the owner/operator. But I have power if not solar power and I now have internet again so I’d best be about my boosting day.

  6. Good morning, 59 and partly cloudy in my garden today. RonK is packing his bags and leaves soon for a family visit with his brothers. He’s flying as the long drive to eastern Wa isn’t easy for him now. And I’m staying here to tend to the garden and to my easily annoyed arthritic joints. He will return on Sunday so my quiet life will be even quieter. Best wishes to all.

  7. Good morning. I feel better after seeing the dermatologist yesterday. The pain wasn’t from anything wrong with the stitches, which is a relief. I’m watching Le Tour, which had an awesome day yesterday. A rider broke the record for most number of stages won, and all the riders were so happy for him. This what I love about cycling — people compete and then congratulate each other after. Something politics could learn.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Thursday that will feel like a Saturday …

It is 78 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 97. Sunny skies are in the forecast with a slight chance of rain in the afternoon. Apparently, there was an EF1 tornado in Tucson on Tuesday night! It knocked over some trees and upended some storage containers in the southeast part of town. According to the weather guys, there are on average 4 tornadoes in Arizona and they tend to be short and weak. I think I remember one tornado alert during last year’s monsoon season in the northwest part of the metro area which seems to get a lot of severe weather (it is flat and open there where there is a break in the mountain ranges.) I think I am too close the mountains here to worry much just like I did not worry when I lived near Lake Michigan. In Madison, we had lots of alerts and one came within a few miles of us. We are definitely not tornado alley.

The “Replace Biden” movement is downright silly. It really underscores how dumb the political class is. I think Joe Biden is doing it right – express that he understands people’s concerns and that he needs to reassure people that he can do the job. The names they are floating to replace him tell you everything you need to know about how unserious the Anybody But Joe people are. Gavin Newsom? We would lose in a landslide – I am not sure I would vote for Newsom. The only serious replacement would be Kamala Harris – apparently she is within the margin of error in national matchups with tRump. What those polls tell me, however, is that the Biden-Harris Administration is preferred over another 4 years of hell and the likely dissolution of the democracy that is being celebrated today. There is plenty of time to get people back on board. We have the issues on our side.

Speaking of issues, the Arizona reproductive rights group gathered over 800,000 signatures to get our abortion rights constitutional amendment on the ballot. We only needed about 400,000 so we are probably good. The group also has $50 million to spend on promoting the ballot initiative – I am sure that number will go up. It is a solid amendment that essentially enshrines the original Roe (not the one watered down over the years) in our constitution.

We were planning an early morning walk at the park but I think it is going to be too hot. According to my weather widget, tomorrow will be a better day as we have not cooled down much from yesterday’s very hot day. In any event, I have a quiet day planned as part of the long weekend when none of my clients are working.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Another “it never got below 80” morning and the A/C kicked on at 6:10 am – but rain’s supposed to move in this afternoon and bring some relief. It’s supposed to get down into the (upper) 60s tonight. Nothing new on the PV system which means nothing generated for the 9th day in a row. I’m trying to think of what to do next on that front. But not on a national holiday. If I don’t reach Fineena today I’m going to try calling Matthews. We’ll see if they answer on a national holiday. They’ve only got one number on their website and it looks like that may be to the Administrative offices. Meanwhile, keeping my laptop plugged in until the charger starts getting hot seems to be working. I was even able to play a few short (under 20 minutes) YouTubes as I was going through my signing off 3 platforms and shutting down procedures (takes about an hour to sign off then do one last pass of all the boosting threads). So that’s good. I miss having music in the background as I work through the day but not enough to endanger being online at all. Anyway, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good hot happy Fourth of July, Meese! It’s 83 F. even on my shady screened porch. It’s allegedly going up to 92 F. and we’ll get thunderstorms. Uh-huh, uh-huh. Pull me other leg, it’s got bells on.

Have a bunch of computer chores to do but will go to the gym and do treadmill first. While I’m there, the eggs and butter can slowly warm up to room temperature. I’ve already rinsed the blueberries. Not quite sure why I’m making this Blueberry Cake as Eric will have a birthday cake made of ice cream.

Had a very pleasant morning yesterday watching the disk of my fellow Drama Club member giving a monologue as Angela Grimke in costume. She was fantastic in the role! The real-life Angela Grimke was so fantastic as an Abolitionist that she’s been written out of history.

Felt so depressed after hearing all the “Biden must go” crap that I stayed in bed an extra hour this morning, drinking tea and reading a novel. I just can’t think about that stuff any more. I can’t watch TV, I can’t read The Washington Poop.

We’re going over to Eric’s later. Hope all Meese will have a nice Fourth! Blessed be.

  11. Good morning, 62 and sunny in Bellingham today. RonK is is Kennewick for a family visit so my house is even quieter this morning. I’ve been on the family chat with the kids and everyone is slowly moving into the day. It will be a low key 4th for all of us this year. As always, my best wishes to all.

  12. Friday Meese. Yay for the election results in the UK!

  13. Good morning. Watching Le Tour, it’s a time trial today. I can’t wait till Monday when the stitches come out. I’m trying to cover them when I change bandages, but I can tell I’m not doing it quite right. Happy about the British election, for the most part. The number of votes for the Reform party is scary — and Nigel Farage is an MP. But there’s this:

  14. Good steamy Friday morning, Moosekind! Lawks, when we woke up it ws 77 F. and the humidity was so high you could see it sticking to the window panes. I’ve ordered Dearly to rest all day and watch telly. It’s going to be far too hot—97 F.! I might even walk through the air-conditioned buildings to the gym today.

We had a great time at Eric’s yesterday. He and Mindy had prepared a massive amount of food, all of which was excellent. The puppy rubbed against our legs, hoping for a handout, while the mother trembled and rolled her eyes in a corner. They’ll be going into temporary foster care while Eric and family are on vacation.

I have a BUNCH of chores this morning: anthology-related, writers’ group meeting-related, and Drama Club-related. Will have to think of something for lunch and we’ll drag ourselves to the Pub for dinner. Yesterday the TV was off most of the time. Lovely! If people dislike Biden so much, how is it that he’s raised more than $127 million for his campaign? I’ll tell you why: it’s the media who want him gone, not the people.

I started reading Charles Frazier’s Varina last night. She was the wife of Jefferson Davis. Oh, Gods, it’s written in the present tense, which means it will be a BORE-CHORE to read. Guess I’ll have to do it as a “duty read,” one chapter a day. Apparently, she was nothing like her husband—haven’t got far into the book yet, but if she’s antislavery while being married to the President of the Confederacy, she should be interesting. My Drama Club friend wants to present her because E. still has the remnants of a Southern accent.

Will try to ignore all news unless it’s about Beryl. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. Don’t go to the Gulf Coast, if you’re not blown away you’ll get mauled by a shark.

    • THIS!! “It’s the media who want [Joe Biden] gone, not the people.”

They want to sell papers and “Incumbent Biden cruising to victory” is boring.

  15. It’s 71 heading for 88 & no heat index. Also sunny. I opened the house a little after midnight. The rain slowed the fireworks down a bit but the diehards apparently were determined to fire off their lot – or at least what they’d allotted for the 4th itself – if it took until the wee hours of the morning. And they did. Sigh.

Matthews wouldn’t tell me anything – HIPAA and all that but I heard from Joker about Fineena yesterday. She’s been back in the hospital since Tuesday, I’m not sure what with besides sepsis, and because of the drugs and IVs she’s not able to communicate much or well. Not by phone at all. (Joker got this from one of Fineena’s local friends who visits her often and frequently goes to doctor appointments with her.) Fineena’s supposed to be in hospital at least until Monday, maybe longer.

    I baked banana nut muffin bread this morning. It’s cooling now and the house smells lovely. The kitchen’s hot though. This will probably be my last baking until September. I only did this one because I needed to use up the last of my eggs. Anyway, I’ll have some with my midmorning coffee. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Good morning, 64 and sunny in my garden today. Thanks to a burst hose and water spraying everywhere I did not go to a family bbque last night. The only way to turn off the torrent of water was to wade into it to get to the faucet handle, and then grab a broom to move the water away from the porch I was soaking wet, muddy, tired, and in no shape to drive anywhere so I stayed here and was in bed by 7:30. Too much excitement for this old woman!
My son will help me replace the hose today and then we need to remember turn off the water at the source, not just let the spray nozzle do it. Best wishes to all.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 91 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 108. Sunny skies are in the forecast, very slight chance for rain. It was 82 degrees when I took my walk at 6am – it is going to be a scorcher! The moon is new at 3:57pm MST. I am ready to ride the waxing energy to what will be next.

A quick scan of the headlines suggest that there is nothing useful there. Glad to see the Tories kicked to the curb – maybe reading about another country’s politics will be more interesting than our sh*tfest.

I have many errands to run and need to get started on my day.

    See all y’all later!

    • I found a BBC News station & have watched it some. Interesting. The election was brutal to the Tories, they’re down to 122 MPs.

  18. Saturday Meese. We’re in the middle of a major thunderstorm atm – with lightning. We are also under a heat advisory. Currently 831 customers with power outage in Kingston – so thankful we have generator.

  19. Good morning. Skipping the morning workout today, will walk on the treadmill this afternoon. Watching Le Tour, will meet my team for breakfast tacos later. I’m getting really upset with the hyenas going after Biden.
