Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 7th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 78 degrees in the Desert Southwest ???? with an expected daytime high of 105. Sunny skies are in the forecast with a slight chance of a monsoonal rain shower in the afternoon.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. Still very hot and humid here in Kingston. 69 going up to 91 today.

    Continuing to watch/tweet posts about our awesome MVP

    Hurricane Beryl

    Puerto Rico

    • Love Kamala! That Beryl is a b*tch. Hope those whose houses were damaged will get some help.

      Oh, power-mongers, do steal from the poor. Don’t give cafeteria workers a raise. They appreciate it so much! NOT!

      O

  3. Good morning. The big excitement yesterday was rain. Not drought-busting, but at least some. Watching Le Tour, yesterday they had cold & rain, today it’s very thick dust — hard to even see them. Got my tea steeping, tomorrow is going to hurt after Thursday & Friday off. One of the pundits this morning made a good point: we’re going to fight off an autocrat by kicking out our democratically-selected nominee and replacing him with what process?

  4. It’s 74 going up to 92, heat index is only expected to get to 94, and sunny. I’ll have to close up in minute. But it’s really nice having these overnights in the 60s. Even if they’re upper 60s and I can’t open the house until whenever I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. LOL.

    No word on Fineena. Or anybody else. Did my vacuuming & other Sunday housecleaning chores. Had trouble with my laptop this morning. Which of course freaked me out for a bit because this is all the computer I have now. I rebooted and lost my sound. This is an old problem – used to happen all the time when I first got this thing. But it also freaked me out until I could remember what I used to have to do to get sound back. Simple. Shut down, don’t reboot. Turn the computer off for at least 10 minutes. So I did and went to cook my oatmeal. By the time breakfast was ready, it was 10 minutes. Turned on the computer and By Gum! Sound. So. Time to get on my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Computers! Can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em. I bet even Shakespeare would have thrown his “competer” across the room when it wouldn’t do what he wanted.

      D*mn, I miss your solar array reports. Wish the blinking inverter would hurry up and get there. Call the mfr yourself and see what happens!

      • I’ve just emailed Ozark Solar and asked if SolarEdge has even assigned a case number and if so what is it. Told him I have the time he does not to do a follow up call/contact. We’ll see if he responds. It won’t be this morning but if he does this evening then I’ll try to make contact tomorrow. Wednesday will be 2 solid weeks without any generation at all. {{{Diana}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind, from the boiling, drought-stricken state named after the nonexistent sex life of a 16th-century English monarch. It’s all-the-eights already, going up to the dear Goddess-knows-what. I must, must start researching rain spells. It’s a beautiful enough day, with a blue sky decorated with wisps of white cirrus clouds. Below, shrubs and trees are forlorn and dying.

    Started reading The Devil’s Half Acre, a book about Mary Lumpkin, an enslaved woman whose early life was brutal but who overcame her terrible beginnings to become successful. She helped numerous other enslaved women. Mary was forced to start bearing her enslaver’s children when she was 13.

    I read to my immense disgust that Richmond was the second largest slave market in the country, the first being New Orleans. And that enslaved children were taken from their mothers at age three! What use is a three-year-old to an enslaver? Toddlers are too young to work. The horrors inflicted on the enslaved population are almost unimaginable. Y’know, I don’t believe in a damn Supreme Deity. If one existed, it ought to be powerful enough to prevent such awfulness.

    Haven’t dared look at the paper this morning, except for the Metro section. Tomorrow I will call Sen. Warner and tell him NOT to overthrow my primary vote for Biden! And I’ll be sure to remember if he’s primaried, the dork. Will also call Sen. Kaine, who’s a darling, and Jennifer Wexton.

    That’s enough from me! Hope everyone at the Pond will have a peaceful, low-blood pressure day.

    • Every time I think about Ron DeSantis teaching Floridians that slavery was very good for the enslaved because they learned job skills that they freaking would not have needed if they had been left in their African countries instead of enslaved I want to scream. That the brutal details of slavery are not being taught any longer is a terrible thing.

      • Amen. They can keep trying to erase the ugly history of enslavement – but we are gonna keep teaching it

  6. Good morning, 74 and sunny in Bellingham today. It’s getting warm upstairs so today’s task is to open more windows, change the winter duvets to lighter weight quilts, and find the fans. The rituals of seasonal changes are part of our lives here but I’m increasingly aware of how much walking is involved. Oh well, I’ll just go slow and rest between tasks. Ron K comes home this evening so I’ll have help with watering the garden tonight, yay! Our son is cooking dinner tonight and I’ll set up the patio so we can be outdoors until time to watch The House of the Dragons. Tonight’s episode features a big war between the houses and their dragons so it should be epically entertaining :) As always, my best wishes to all.

  7. Monday Meese. Yet another hot sticky day ahead here in Kingston NY, it will be 92 and we are still under a heat advisory.

    Puerto Rico

  8. Good morning. Last walk with stitches. We’re not getting any rain from Beryl, at least not yet. In the office — have I mentioned that if it can be avoided you should not get stitches on the back of your leg? — but at least I’m leaving early. Anyway, ouch. I’m really tired of the people calling for Biden to step down. None of them say what happens after that. Biden has been so successful, has done so much good. The Rs are getting us to defeat ourselves.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 78 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 108. Sunny skies are in the forecast and no rain expected. The long range forecast suggests more active monsoonal rain at the end of the week to cool us down.

    I was glad to see that France’s voters rejected the right-wing. To think that they were that close to embracing fascism – sacre bleu, they fought tooth and nail in WW II to overcome the Nazi takeover of their country. In any event, they will have a coalition of parties that despise each other, their only bond being their rejection of Le Pen. We wish them luck.

    I am going to ignore the news until the Mark Warners and the scared babies in the House of Representatives settle down and get firmly in the Biden camp. I would not want to be working as hard as Biden is when I am 80 but as long as he can do the work and surrounds himself with competent people to handle the details, I am fine with it. Keep our eye on the prize – defeating tRump and letting Jack Smith successfully finishing his prosecution in the hopes that we don’t see tRump again in 2028.

    I have a busy day and did not get much sleep last night thinking about how busy my day would be. Time to get back to it.

    See all y’all later!

  10. It’s 75 heading for 83, heat index 90, and clouds are already moving in for the rain we’re predicted to but probably won’t get this afternoon. Internet outage again this morning but at least it came back up by the time I finished my breakfast. Called Fineena last night on the off chance but it went to her voicemail. Not surprising. I wish her friend would update us more often but if there’s no change I guess she figures that’s not worth reporting.

    I’ll need to close up the house in a few minutes. And hope that it’s not one of those days where it’s not hot enough for the A/C to kick on but the heat index makes it miserable. One more thing we shall see. Anyway, gonna start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! A lovely day it is in Ashburned, currently 85 F. but on its way up to a loathsome 95 F. rainless degrees. The hydrangeas in front of my building are quite shriveled and some of the younger trees look dead.

    We keep the televicious OFF nowadays, for the most part. Of course, I can’t stop Dearly from watching icky programs—I’m out and about all the time, while he, poor darling, is mostly confined to the flat because of not feeling well. Still, he broiled steaks last night, and ate all his dinner, so he’s sort of okay.

    I’m about to go to the gym but first have to send off a couple of emails and then think about my book. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond! And puleeze, Goddess, give the freakin’ media something ELSE to talk about!

  12. Good morning. We got zero rain from Beryl, Houston got drowned. They were already dealing with flooding from a few weeks ago. Got the stitches out — there were 11 of them! — feels much better. Glad I’m at home today.

    • Glad you got those stitches out & are feeling better. Good that it’s work from home day and you get some relative rest.

      Houston gets drowned on a regular basis that is getting more regular as the already warm Gulf waters warm more. Sigh.

  13. Tuesday Meese. Hot and humid here in Kingston – 75 going up to 95 and raining.

    Puerto Rico

    Far from the dream of motherhood without medical coverage for infertility

  14. Good Tuesday morning in Ashburned, Meese! It’s 84 F., climbing up to a loathsome 97 F. later. Goddess Yemaya, where ARE you? We need you here. OK, ’nuff complained.

    Swamped with work: essays to read through (two came in late) for Thursday’s meeting, this time for particularly fetching phrases, details, and descriptions; a whole raft of anthology pieces to review, but I simply can’t get to that before Friday; my little skit, “Risque Rendezvous” to revise slightly; and Goddess knows what else.

    Golly, it was 59 years ago today that I arrived in the DC area. I’m a Virginian now. Leaving Oklahoma was the best thing I ever did, and I didn’t even know at the time that it was going to turn red.

    After the Drama Club Board meeting yesterday, three of us still had a lot to say so we stood talking to each other for another 45 minutes. Two of them advised me to email my fellow actor to ask him for a decision, which I did late last night. I do wish he’d say yes, because the other male actors in our club are all horribly hairy.

    Must get washed and dressed to rush to the gym. I want to get the sweatiness over BEFORE I get my hair done. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  15. It’s 63 heading for 83 – how’s that for a July day. LOL. Overcast still. The rain moved in yesterday afternoon. I was able to open up the house by 4 pm & leave it open. Which it still is and probably will be til around noon. It’s unlikely the A/C will be on at all today. Tomorrow we get back to summer but I’ll enjoy the reminder of Spring or promise of Fall, whichever this is supposed to be.

    The Ozark Solar guy gave me the case number yesterday. So I, after a lot of jacking around with the Support application at SolarEdge (it decided to no recognize my perfectly valid serial number on the inverter – and the program is written that it stops right there, no options, no workarounds, no “chat”, no reaching a human), I emailed the issue via the “Contact Us” application. I gave them the case number and my site ID – which should have been enough for the tech app but wasn’t – and told them my inverter’s dead, it’s been dead for 12 days, & never mind “working on” my case when were they sending the replacement to Ozark Solar/my installer. That application is mostly designed to sell systems and upgrades so hopefully somebody will see & respond to that. If not by tomorrow I’ll probably waste some time trying to call them. And if I can’t get through we’ll see if they monitor their Xitter account by putting them “on blast” as Aji calls it.

    Nothing new on Fineena. Not a good sign. Nothing on anybody else either. Which probably is a good sign. Anyway, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Good afternoon, meeses! Tuesday …

    My day started late and everything just snowballed. I did not get a morning walk and the treadmills were busy this afternoin so I did a VERY short walk in the 107 degree heat. My legs got stretched out which is the most important thing.

    See everyone tomorrow!

  17. Wednesday Meese. This icky weather has put a crimp in my 26th initiation birthday anniversary celebration tomorrow (and Saturday) I have no energy to cook and do all the other preparations.
    It’s just too damn hot and humid. Sigh.

    Puerto Rico

    • Dee, I’ve often wondered whether a combination of yogurt, cold rice, and cold cut-up pineapple would appeal when the weather is loathsomely hot. I read that the Brits assigned to Sri Lanka during WWII lived on a combination of lime juice and salt and returned to the U.K. after the war as skinny as rails.

      Hope you can find a way to manage the heat.

    • {{{Denise}}} Hope you manage to have a good celebration, in spite of the weather. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  18. Good morning. Internet and cable were out all afternoon yesterday. I finished the book I was reading, went to the library to download the sequel. Missed an agency-wide meeting (I don’t know how to pair earphones to my work laptop), it was really annoying. Anyway, hi. Glad I can log in and say hi.

    • Internet issues are almost as bad as power issues these days. Especially when it comes to work. {{{anotherdemocrat}}}
