Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 14th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 77 degrees in the Desert Southwest ???? with an expected daytime high of 100. Sunny skies in the morning with a chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. I guess all news will be ignored as the press focuses on Trump.
Hot here today, will be 93 and tomorrow 98 which is truly weird for us up here in the Catskills.

    Puerto Rico

    Caribbean

  3. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind, and happy Bastille Day! We are keeping the telly OFF except for the England-Spain game this afternoon and whatever murder mysteries are happening on PBS. It’s going to be hot as hell today. The howling pack of pariah dogs that constitutes the media will be so busy screeching about the attempted assassination that perhaps they’ll let up on the “Biden must step down” narrative.

Daughter in Massachusetts, who appears not to know how elections work, thinks Biden should step down. I pointed out to her what others have pointed out to us, that 14 million of us voted for Biden in the primaries, and who has the authority to negate our votes? And if they do have it, why did we bother to vote at all? Don’t know about other states, but in Virginia it takes 10,000 sigs from registered voters in good standing to get someone’s name on a ballot. That’s why operatives start collecting sigs the year before. Anyway, after I pointed all that out to her, she went into silent mode.

Never made it to the gym in two days—today, plan to go or die in the attempt. Finally wrote my Australian sister-in-law the letter I’ve owed her for months. Went to the Drama Club meeting yesterday afternoon, but was disappointed to see my fellow actor wasn’t there. We do need to rehearse.

This afternoon, when it’s 96 F., I’ll start reading over the anthology material one more time. Other chores: ask granddaughter to create a playlist, look up environmentally friendly decorations for Dearly’s birthday party.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • That the gunman was a 20 year old white male is peak 2024 – a man who had easy access to weapons and likely no access to mental health care. The trumpers who glorified Kyle Rittenhouse and protected his rights to arm himself are now pivoting to “mean rhetoric” as the problem instead of easy access to weapons meant to kill.

Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, said that inflammatory language by Democrats was to blame for the violence.

  4. Good morning. Watching Le Tour because I don’t need to hear coverage of the assassination attempt. It was an idiotic thing to do, no result but harm. You know what’s actually affecting people? Power still out in Houston, with heat indexes of 105-110. Anyway, I ran a little yesterday, may go to the gym this afternoon.

      • And Houston is just so ridiculously hot. It’s like walking around in a steam room. It doesn’t cool off overnight, unless you consider 80s “cool”.

        • Our overnight “cooldowns” rarely get below 80 this time of year but thankfully we don’t have the oppressive humidity.

  5. It’s 80 heading for 96 but relatively less humid – the heat index is only 5 degrees above the air temps rather than ten. The energy I generated last month over what I used will – I hope – cover this month since the SWEPCO bill is mid-month to mid-month. Heaven only knows what my August bill will be as this is the 19th day down. And no more word from the Ozark Solar guy. Somebody really ought to train the younger generations of small business owners about customer service.

There was an assassination attempt on TFG? A real one? Well, that’s interesting. I doubt it will change anything. Rs will vote for him. Dems won’t. Indies will vote for whoever they were going to vote for but didn’t want to admit it out loud.

    I’ve done my Sunday chores. I’m hot, sticky, tired, and my back hurts. LOL. What’s new. Anyway, time to start my boosting days. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • The hypocrisy starts:

Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, who earlier this year called for citizens to use physical force against peaceful pro-Palestinian protesters, condemned political violence in an appearance on CBS, saying that Americans should settle “differences through political debates and through elections. We don’t settle them through violence.”

      • Tom Cotton is a Christo-Fascist who spews whatever line suits the Bircher, Heritage Foundation, Christian Zionist, Christo-Fascist purpose. Violence should only be used By Rs, not against them.

        • I wasn’t sure what was more risible – that he was calling out violence or that he thought that elections, which his party hates unless only white christians are allowed to vote without barriers, were the solution.

          • It tracks. He does think elections – where only CIS white Xtian males are allowed to vote – are the nonviolent answer. If he can’t have that, then violence by CIS white Xtian males against everybody else works for him.

  6. Good morning, 68 and sunny in Bellingham today. I’m going to putter around in the garden today, help RonK cook salmon tacos for supper, and then watch House of the Dragon. For some reason fighting stupid wars with dragons is entertainment but real violence in real life is increasingly unbearable. Best wishes to all.

  7. Monday Meese. 71 going up to 95 and we are under a heat advisory here in Kingston. I have to go for an MRI this afternoon…hate having to leave the house.

    Puerto Rico

  8. Good morning. Monday. Sigh. Did my walk/run — 1.5 mi with just snippets of running. Leg is healing, I got some scar cream that I hope will help. Hoping that the news can move on from Saturday, and maybe cover some actual news.

    • Glad about your leg, another! With respect, I disagree about the news. The longer they moan about the shooting, the less we’ll hear about how Biden is so old he has to step down. Their strictures against Biden are directly related to the color of Kamala Harris’ skin.

  9. Happy St. Swithin’s Day, Moosekind! It’s already 86 F. at 9 a.m., going up to a hunnerd degrees F. Bummer. Last night I saw the half-moon in the evening sky, which cheered me up no end. It was my first sighting in weeks, although it wasn’t silver against black velvet, but simply a ghost moon in a twilight heaven.

I have to leave here at 11:30 to meet with the guy at Costco to tell him these new hearing aids suck. I also need to finish reading through the anthology selections and email my Writers’ Group about our theme for next month. Dearly is black and blue, dammit. He takes horrible, horrible Warfarin, called Coumadin, so every time he so much as brushes by a counter, he gets a big bruise. Poor darling.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and THANK GODDESS for air conditioning!

  10. The heat index never got below 80 overnight and of course I haven’t opened up. Probably won’t until Thursday morning. Still haven’t heard back from the Ozark Solar guy. One of a multitude of things I’m not happy about right now. But at least I got flea goo on the cats this morning. The twins won’t let me within touching range again at least until tomorrow but it’s done for another month. Used the last of the flea goo so I’ll have to get more before mid-August. One of these evenings I’ll stop checking the clock to see if it’s time to call Fineena. New patterns take time to establish. Meanwhile, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 86 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 99. Sunny skies this morning with a chance for rain this afternoon and into the evening. Yesterday afternoon we had a monsoonal downpour with high winds, hail and quite a bit of rain. It was fun to watch it come in over the mountains but we were worried about a family of desert quail who were scurrying for cover. They emerged unscathed and we were very relieved. Lots of tree limbs down but not much else in our area. There was a tornado warning box near Oracle but just a yellow thunderstorm box here.

I am going to just briefly skim the news headlines and then go back to my project work. I saw that tRump was planning to scrap his “we need to kill all Democrats” speech and appeal to unity. I do not want to see what will pass for unity in his addled brain and, really, does anyone think that his supporters will settle for anything other than an all out bloody war? I feel sorry for Milwaukee and hope that people of color can be kept safe from the armed vigilantes who will be roaming the streets and neighborhoods there.

    See all y’all later!

  12. Tuesday Meese. It’s 72 going up to 97 here in Kingston. Yikes. Humidity currently 88%.

Seems like every damn day the right-wing fascists in this country get worse.

    Puerto Rico

  13. Good morning. So glad to be wfh today. Watching Le Tour. Tired of hearing all about tfg. Yesterday there was quite the run on Vance’s book at my library; I’m proud of myself for never mentioning that it’s actually fiction.

  14. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s a bright day here, already 86 F. on its way up to 103 F. Yikes. Yesterday Yemaya heard my screeches as I was walking through the buildings to the cafe to get our dinner, and produced a massive rainstorm with lightning. The temperature immediately dropped 25 degrees. Lovely, although some trees did go down here and there around town.

I’m feeling a bit coldish (headache, sneezes, bla bla), but feel confident I can overcome it. Still hugely annoyed about the Cannon, but Special Counsel Jack Smith is not going to give up. Glad Dark Brandon socked it to Lester Holt during the interview last night. Didn’t watch it but I heard about it.

Can’t help remembering that it’s only a week since our Fineena went over the Rainbow Bridge. If I close my eyes and concentrate, I can still hear her voice in my mind. It was a light, charming voice, with a bit of a Southern accent. Why do some people seem absolutely dogged by bad luck? I’d like to think she’s running through a flower-starred meadow with a whole pack of Airedales who bark happily as they surge around her.

This morning I’m off to the gym, then to get my hair done. Tonight we’re writing postcards to voters in Michigan. Thus do things proceed.

Still haven’t heard from the guy who’s supposed to be the other character in my play. I would like to schedule a read-through of the script, but feel nervous about contacting this person in case his wife thinks I’m chasing him. It took weeks to get her permission for him to play the role. Harrumph.

Well, lots to do today, so I’ll be off. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, AND to our beloved President and Vice President! Yay, Biden-Harris!

    • I did not watch the Lester Holt interview but will look for reliable commentary on it. Holt is one of the tRump fluffers from the last election and when I see his face, I change the channel.

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 77 degrees and muggy in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 100. My weather widget says it is storming but on my walk I had partly cloudy skies! There is about a 15% chance of rain all day and during monsoon season a thunderstorm could arrive over the mountains without much warning.

JD Vance. Yikes! The era of politicians with law degrees and years of public service has come to an end. A guy writes a book, makes money, appears on TV being angry and is now running to be a heartbeat away from a guy who drinks diet coke and eats cheeseburgers. From what I read (and thank goodness this takes Joe Biden’s fitness out of the news for a short while) is that the MAGA faithful don’t like him, pro-Ukraine Americans don’t like him, women don’t like him and he has a loooong record of saying nasty things about tRump. It will be interesting to see if a VP pick will have an impact on the race. It normally does not but when the candidate is old there is certainly more scrutiny – I think Sarah Palin scared off a lot of people. Mike Pence brought the white evangelical christianists on board but the Republican ticket does not need anyone to bring the pompous ass and blowhard vote on board, the presidential candidate has that covered.

I had a very hectic day yesterday and I am hoping to get my desktop stack of notes sorted out so I can see where I am on projects.

    See all y’all later!

  16. It’s 80 heading for 96 heat index 106 and sunny at the moment. For which I’m glad as I’ve got my laundry hanging on the line. It was cloudy when I hung it out and I was a bit worried that we’d get an unforecast rain shower while they were out. Our rain isn’t due until after dark. If then.

    Wondering what the heck I’m going to do if the Ozark Solar guy doesn’t get to me soon. It will be a solid 3 weeks as of tomorrow 6:12 AM. Thinking of Fineena. She was such a good person and so much evil dogged her steps almost all her life. There is just so much evil in the world – and it’s all rooted in Patriarchy/white supremacist/colonizer culture. Sigh. Anyway, all I can do is boost stuff so I’d best get to it. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  17. Good morning, 55 and sunny in Bellingham today. Three+ hours later we left the Verizon store yesterday with a new phone for me and a new monthly plan that costs less. I did have to by all new charging cables and still have passwords to change…..it’s all to complicated! My phone was old and due to be replaced but it still seems odd that by buying a new deeply discounted phone we save money money month to month.

The news I’ve been trying to ignore has been intense, TPM……

Our faces are pressed too closely to the glass of current events to see what the past three weeks portend for the next few months. The past may be prologue, but past performance is no guarantee of future results. The intense pace is not likely sustainable, but anomalies happen. The impacts of each of these events on the election outcome is inscrutable; their collective impacts are indecipherable. We just don’t know. We pretend to know, sometimes, because it offers a respite from the doubt and confusion. But we don’t really know.

A more Zen person than I would urge you to embrace the uncertainty. I’m just trying to hold on for dear life.

    Best wishes to all

  18. Wednesday Meese. 71 going up to 91 here with rain.

    Remembering. RIP John Lewis

    • In my opinion, John Lewis would not be pleased to see Democrats trying to take down our duly elected nominee. I hope that people remembering John Lewis and remembering his legacy will remind them that “giving up” and conceding a tRump win is about as anti-John Lewis as you can get.

  19. Good morning. It’s very weird not watching the news, but all they talk about is the R convention and “Biden’s age!!” (Hey — news people: the power is still out for 100,000 people in Houston and people are literally dying because of the heat. Maybe someone could talk about that.) I’m watching Le Tour — will miss it next week when it’s over. Anyway, I hope everyone has a good day.
