Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 21st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 77 degrees in the Desert Southwest ???? with an expected daytime high of 100. Partly sunny skies with a chance for storms later in the day.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. Temps going back up here. sigh.

    Thought these were excellent posts from Tiff, on the delegate process

    • The last thing I read suggests that the DNC is going to proceed with the virtual roll call and nomination starting on July 26th. It was initially set up that way to make sure that the Biden-Harris ticket was on the ballot in Ohio; the Republican government there decided to be jerks (shocking, I know) and block access because they insisted that the ballot be set by August 7th. They since passed a bill saying that they will accept the Democratic ticket after the convention but – a very big but – that law does not go into effect until September 1st. So we have to trust the Ohio state government to not pull the football away at the last minute AND that they will bat away any lawsuits from the tRump campaign that the ballot change is illegal. As this article states:

      Democrats do not trust Republicans and worry that waiting to nominate Biden at the convention could expose them to risky and costly litigation from Republicans. (Trump allies could still sue Ohio officials and insist that a judge rule Biden can’t be on the ballot.)

      “Ballot access deadlines are not something to take risks with,” said former Biden White House counsel Dana Remus, who was also general counsel for Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign.

      Democrats should NEVER trust Republicans. Period.

  3. Good morning. Watching Le Tour, why they’re doing an individual time trial for the last stage is just beyond me. The last day is supposed to be a celebration, with the teams riding together, and there’s always the picture of the different jersey winners riding together…. Anyway, I’m losing my distraction from politics, boo. Got my tea steeping, love the smell. I’ve got to make next week’s breakfast later.

  4. It’s 66 heading for 76 and raining. Where this weather came from I don’t know but I’ll take it. Another day with no need for A/C. Considering I set my thermostat at 79 in summer the A/C wouldn’t come on today even if I turned it on. It’s also dark enough to need lights on but that’s not a big deal when I don’t have a working PV system. sigh. The lights I have on are LEDs and wouldn’t use a whole – or even half – KWH if I left them on for 24s straight.

    Basket’s visiting with a cousin at Yosemite. I guess everybody else is hanging in there. I haven’t heard otherwise anyway. I’m still overheated from doing my Sunday cleaning chores but it must still be relatively cool since I’ve got a little black cat curled up on my lap and he only does that in the cooler weather. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Sunday afternoon, Moosekind! It’s sunny with a few rather pretty clouds, all-the-eights outside, and I am FREAKED OUT!

    Woke up from my nap an hour ago to find that our president is stepping down! What’s wrong with this country? An elderly man, a decent man, has ONE BAD DEBATE and the billies (billionaires Melon Husk et al.) and the media bully him into stepping down, while another elderly man, nearly as old, who is an adjudicated rapist, a known pervert (see the Epstein files), and has 34 felony convictions, is NOT ASKED TO STEP DOWN?

    I love Kamala, absolutely love her. But who’s going to vote for her besides us Meese and the KHive?

    My blood pressure is taking off for the moon!

    • We are going to try to ignore the news swirling around us today. I think we may need to do something spiritual to put positive energy out there so that the people who control the nomination process do the right thing. Goddess help us.

  6. Good morning. I am still angry at the pack of jackals who attacked President Biden, but I love our MVP and love all the excitement around her. Looking forward to the campaign.

    I actually ran for 8 minutes this morning, then after about 4-5 minutes walking, I ran up the terrible hill. So, pretty good day. Oh, and I’m leaving early for an eye doc appointment, so it’s a pretty great day.

    • Yay! for running up the terrible hill. & leaving work early. {{{anotherdemocrat}}}

  7. Monday Meese. The outpouring of support (and money) for MVP Harris is wonderful. That’s all I have to say today.

  8. It’s 68 heading for 82 (heat index 86) and overcast again today. Yesterday was totally weird for July – it not only never got warm enough to turn on the A/C, it never got warm enough to close up the house. Today, is still a little cooler than normal for July but not that cool. I’ll be closing up the house in an hour or so.

    Since I don’t look at the new at all, I found out about Biden stepping down when someone DM’d me about “President Harris” – I went “WHAT?” thinking something had happened to President Biden. I mean this IS his 2nd (or is it 3rd) round on Covid and no, Covid is not “just another cold”. Am I hopeful about Harris winning? Not really. But I’m praying for it for all I’m worth. We not only need to push Harris’s good points like crazy, we need to tie Project 2025 to the entire R party (as it should be) but especially the leader of that party.

    My son’s working one last day at the pizza store closest to me before taking his own vacation and then opening his grab-and-go pizza store for the Fall semester. (His store is set in the middle of dorm central and is only open while students are in residence.) So he’s going to make a GF pizza for me and deliver it in time for lunch today. That will be nice. Meanwhile I have a lot of boosting to do so I’d best get to it. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • There were a lot of people certain in 2007 that it was “too soon” to nominate a Black man to be president and wanted Barack Obama to wait. He did not listen to them, put together a team and a strategy and won two presidential elections. So I am not willing to accept that Kamala Harris, who begins from a position of strength, with the endorsements of a lot of influential people, a big pot of money and an energized base, can’t win. I think it will be more difficult to overcome the misogyny than the racism but we have to be willing to try and to believe it is possible. tRump is already saying he won’t debate Kamala (calling her “illegitimate”) – that is no shock, a gross old man who is a serial rapist and convicted felon versus a young vigorous woman who can speak in complete sentences is an optic he does not want any part of. We will make sure people see it.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 73 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 100. Sunny skies this morning and a very slight chance of rain this afternoon into the evening. We had some crackling good storms Saturday night and yesterday evening and the promised cool down has arrived. Morning lows in the 70s and highs at or below 100. I am going to delay my morning walk for a bit to see if the sun can burn off the humidity. It is a fine balance between being too hot and too muggy. I can walk when it is 85 if the humidity is low but temperatures in the upper 70s are oppressive if the humidity is too high.

    I hope that there is something we don’t know about Joe Biden’s health that made him make this drastic move and not just a bunch of jackals tearing at his flesh. It is entirely possible that his decline accelerated and he realized that a rigorous campaign was not possible. I would have liked for him to win and then hand the reins over to Kamala but if the winning part was in doubt, it is better to go this route. I am not looking forward to seeing what MAGAt America says and does – I hope they expose their racism and misogyny in ways that turn off the Republican voters who only want tax cuts and make them stay home or vote for Kamala. Let’s hope that Joe Biden’s endorsement is enough to get her nominated – no sensible Democrat would want to run without the support of the sitting president of their party but no sensible Democrat would think that an open convention with a new unvetted nominee would be a good idea and there are a bunch of them suggesting that very thing.

    I think it is time to start my walk.

    See all y’all later!

  10. Today is Karen’s/Fineena’s birthday. She’s have been 70 if she’d been able to hang on another 12 days. She made her birth month though. And is hopefully getting some rest now.

  11. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! The day started off well. My Goddess, $60 million raised for Kamala’s campaign? That’s how unpopular she is and how “no one likes her,” according to the Washington Poop? May their stomachs roil for weeks so they have to subsist miserably on peppermint-flavored Tums.

    Yesterday I was in shock, as I consider President Biden to be the best president of my lifetime, but today I feel better. Her campaign has now raised $70 million on ActBlue. She already has pledged delegates from several states. Perhaps in deference to my feelings (and also because he doesn’t want to hear me cursing the creepy journos on TV), the TV has been off all morning. I still have lots of “Kamala for President” swag, so I’ll be digging that out. I hope she chooses Josh Shapiro for Veep.

    That said, I can’t help remembering that today would have been Fineena’s 70th birthday. We joked about being twins separated at birth, although I had a good 10 years on her. I wonder what it is that makes the lives of some people dogged by ill luck, while others are more fortunate? “Life is unfair,” President Kennedy said, and he was right.

    Dearly is going to the doctor and I’m going to the gym pretty soon. Not exercising for two whole days has played havoc with my weight. But Saturday I was getting organized and yesterday I was in shock, so there’s that.

    It’s another ugly day here, with gray skies presaging rain. Wouldn’t mind if it would actually do it and get it over with. Right now it’s 78 F., on its way up to 90-something.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, and a day of weeping, wailing, and gnashing teeth to Defeated Former Guy’s campaign. I will have to stop these bad wishes, and will after today. I’m just so livid at the billies and bullies who forced our president out.

    • The vice presidential speculation will be entertaining. It will likely be a white male but I hope to hell it is someone more lively and energetic than Tim “Yawn” Kaine. He did nothing for the Hillary ticket. I don’t know about Josh Shapiro, he seems a little too untested. Pundits are talking about Andy Beshear. He certainly has the Democratic Party pedigree and has done amazing things in a deep red state. Would it help some people vote for the ticket? I don’t know. One thing for certain – it needs to be Kamala’s choice like it is for all vice presidential choices, not something foisted on her or determinant of whether or not she gets the nomination.

      • One thing for certain – it needs to be Kamala’s choice like it is for all vice presidential choices, not something foisted on her or determinant of whether or not she gets the nomination.

        You’re absolutely right, Jan!

      • It definitely needs to be her choice. But I hope to heaven she doesn’t pick someone who is currently holding an elected position. Either for veep or (hopefully) for her cabinet. Obama effed up a lot of states by pulling their Dem electeds.

        • Mark Kelly is a sitting Senator but the Democratic governor of Arizona would name his replacement. Thank goodness we got Katie Hobbs elected in 2022.

  12. Good afternoon, 64, cloudy, windy and busy in Bellingham today. Our daughter and her family are here so my day started with coffee, dogs, and family gathering in my usually quiet room. They just for a walk so I’m reading the news and daring to feel a bit hopeful re President Harris becoming a reality. Best wishes to all.

  13. Tuesday Meese. 69 here in Kingston and raining – only going up to 79
    Stayed up late listening to Black men raise money for Kamala, on a youtube live stream –

    In 2019, one of Bakari Sellers’ twin daughters was born with a rare liver condition in a birth that nearly killed his wife. Sellers, a former South Carolina politician and current CNN political commentator has told the story before.
    But on Monday night on a Zoom call with more than 20,000 Black men, he couldn’t stop the tears from coming down recounting how his wife and daughter are now well and thriving and about the support he got during that ordeal.
    “I will never forget, the first person to call me…,” he said, pausing for 20 seconds to get the words out. ” … was Kamala Harris. I am not sure people understand the pain and suffering that goes along with being a Black man in this country. I am not sure people understand what it means to stand strong in this country. To have your back against the wall. But I am going to stand with her because she stood with me, during my darkest moment when I almost lost my daughter. When I had to protect my wife.”

  15. Good morning. We’re getting rain, quite exciting for July — and our highs are more like May. I’m going to go to a store that carries political stuff and see if they have Harris for President stickers yet. Anyway, time to get to work.

  16. It’s 67 heading for 85 and sunny at the moment. We got more rain yesterday that cooled things down again. Totally weird for July, especially the last week of July, but I’ll take it. Any day I don’t have to run A/C is good. I don’t know if this will be another but if it’s not, well, I’ve had several in a row and am grateful. The Ozark Solar guy is supposed to be here today to do the diagnostics. We shall see what we shall see.

    Lousy night. I think I got 4 hours of sleep total in multiple batches. I hate sinusitis. Oh well. I’ll survive. I’ve got one last load of firewood for the winter coming sometime today. I need to move the car. Since it hasn’t been started in over a week I’ll have to let it run for a while to recharge the battery when I do. I’m hoping the Ozark Solar guy gets here first so I’ll know where it’s “safe” to park. Anyway, I need to get started boosting stuff. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  17. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s 75 F. and fairish, going up to 85 F. or so They say. They’ve promised SEVERE thunderstorms for this week, but no cigar. One is better off paying no attention.

    Dearly’s dermatologist carved him up properly, so today he looks a total wreck. Poor darling. I had to wash dried blood from the area behind his ear because he disturbed the wound during the night. I need to go buy proper bandages and other medical supplies.

    The Play Selection Committee is supposed to read the script for a play we’re considering for next spring. Lawks, as if one didn’t already have enough to do! Still, I’d better fit it in somehow.

    Yesterday evening I saw Margaret Young (I think that’s her name) perform as Amelia Earhart in full flying gear, boots, goggles, leather jacket. She was wonderful! Hope she comes back.

    Vice President nominee…whom do you like? Kelly doesn’t seem to have much personality, and does he really want to put Gabby through that? Jan, what have you against Gavin Newsome, who is not under consideration? I always liked him for suddenly allowing marriage equality in San Fran years ago when he was mayor. Bunches of us on dailykos sent flowers to the people standing in line for licenses to get married.

    I remember the “Roses for Pelosi” movement too. There are certain persons in the political world that I’m going to regard with a jaundiced eye from now on for bullying Biden out of office. I’m delighted with Kamala, of course, but I would rather have seen her declare for next time around. Oh, well, it’s time we had a woman president and I’ll be the first to wear all white to the polls again and take a photo of my ballot!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • The only downside I see to Mark Kelly is that I think it would be hard on Gabby and she deserves an easier life. He is ex-military, an ex-astronaut and a guy who won’t be pushed around by the Faux Hillbilly.

      I find Newsom personally disgusting but the biggest thing is that he is surrounded by a California bubble that won’t make him popular with anyone except the left of the left. We will win them – we need someone who can talk to folks in Wisconsin and Michigan and Pennysylvania and keep the Biden voters.

  18. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 95 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 100. Sunny skies this morning with a chance for afternoon and evening rain. Last night we got some rain just after midnight which I heard tip-tapping against the chimney. I got my walk in before it got hot! I should be able to start seeing the moon from my office window – this morning I saw the stars to the east but not the moon to the west.

    It looks like the DNC’s virtual nomination will take place – good, we don’t want to give any red state Secretaries of State the chance to ratfk the nomination process. Together We Can Win This, says Kamala Harris.

    I spent all morning connecting with clients and I need to take a break from my computer.

    See all y’all later!

  19. Good morning. We are getting rain! In Texas, in July. And it’s cool — barely even getting to 90. Anyway, happy Wednesday everyone. Got busy yesterday & didn’t get my Harris for President sticker, but I will today.
