Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 28th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 75 degrees in the Desert Southwest ???? with an expected daytime high of 97. Chance of showers all day, mainly in the morning and late afternoon.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Good Sunday Meese. 60 going up to 86 and sunny here in Kingston.
Didn’t expect to see this in Florida:

    The Villages

    Puerto Rico
    Puerto Rico

  3. Good morning. Yesterday’s music diary went okay, not a huge crowd but people did like the topic. And my run — I called it 2/3 of a mile, so I’m getting close. Today, I’ve got my tea steeping, watching the news. Got to cook next week’s lunch & dinner. I hope everyone’s having a good weekend.

  5. It’s 76 heading for 90, heat index 95, and sunny at the moment. The chores are done, the house is closed up, and the A/C is turned on. We shall see when it comes on. The last several days it hasn’t until after 5 pm – but those days had overnights below 70. We didn’t last night/today. Although I was able to open up while I did the vacuuming. I finally put all the pieces of the desktop computer on the shelf in the spare room closet. Protected from dust as best I could. Protected from cats definitely. The can’t get up there. The next time basket visits he can look at it and see if there’s something that can be fixed. He bought it, bless him. It’s up to him what to do with it. Actually the keyboard on the laptop is much easier for my hands to deal with. But oh, is it hard to read the small screen. I have it set at 110% and would do it larger except even 1255 loses side bars (if any) or requires that I scroll side to side to read the whole line & that’s a non-starter for me. Anyway, I’d best get to my boosting day. My son will be coming this afternoon and depending on what kind of protein he brings for me, I may have a lot of cooking to do when he does. Holding the Good/Healing Thoughts for everybocy. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Ah, for the old edit button. The cats can’t get up on the closet shelf & setting the screen at 125% loses the sidebars. . .

  6. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind!

It’s a gorgeous day here in Ashburnikins, 77 F. now, going up to 95 F. later. Been busy as a little bee. Just mopped the kitchen and half-bath floors, waiting for them to dry. Arranged the flowers, broke the vase in the process, so that was kind of a bummer.

Darling daughter arrived in town about 10 p.m. last night after a nightmare drive. Her hubby called when she reached New Jersey to let her know she’d left her suitcase at the top of the stairs! She says it’s PTSD from moving from Virginia to Massachusetts. However, she does want to be present at our triple-birthday celebration, She’s going to pick me up a bit before noon so we can go to the spa for pedicures.

Younger Son is presumably busy making sandwiches for the party this evening. I wonder if the three children present will want ice cream as well as cake? I suppose I could pick up some after the pedicure.

Our flat is full of birthday presents, party supplies, and I don’t know what all. I’m already tired from having another rotten night. Never mind, we will get through it.

I am totally thrilled with all the attention Kamala is receiving. Stunned by the reaction of The Villages!

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  7. Good morning. Happy Monday. President Biden is coming to town today, for the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. I hope the traffic from that clears out by 5, and I hope the news actually covers this. I walked 1.3 mi, just a walk, will run tomorrow. Anyway, hi there everyone.

  8. It’s 77 going up to 94, heat index 102, and sunny. I opened up for half an hour just to air out the house. Unless things change I won’t be opening up again until Friday morning. The heat index isn’t expected to get under 83 until then. I haven’t heard from the Ozark Solar guy so I’m assuming SolarEdge did respond to his submittal of the diagnostics & order for a replacement inverter. It’ll be a week tomorrow since he did that. He said 7 to 14 days. So 14 days is *next Tuesday. Unless they mean business days – that would bring it to about August 12th. Sigh.

My son wasn’t feeling well yesterday so didn’t come by. He’s hoping it’s just a touch of the sun from Saturday and not anything contagious. He’s to cover another manager today and said he’d stop by Sam’s Club on his way home and get the potatoes & protein he was supposed to bring me yesterday. We shall see. If he’s actually sick and doesn’t go to work, I’ll do a grocery store run. It’s more expensive but it’s still food.

Somebody posted a photo of Purple Cherokee tomatoes they’d gotten at the Farmers Market and that reminded me of Fineena. She loved them. Last August after the move, when Henry was still alive, she was happy to be in a place without vermin and with working A/C, and her doctor had high hopes of finding out and treating what was wrong, I sent her $25 toward groceries and she spent it on 6 pounds of Purple Cherokees. LOL. She ate tomato sandwiches for lunch and dinner until they were gone.

    Things are not good in the world. I have no idea if they can be made better much less if they will. But I’ll keep doing my best. And right now my best is getting started on my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  9. Monday Meese. Lousy weather here today (more rain). I’m taking a partial break from politics and will be watching some Olympics.

    Puerto Rico

  10. Good morning, 60 and raining in Bellingham today. Erica and her family are home now so our house is very quiet, and in need of a good cleaning. Lots of family and dog activity last week! I really enjoyed their visit and the weariness I’m feeling is the good kind. Best wishes to all,

  11. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 90 degrees and sunnyish, not expected to get as hot as it has been, maybe 99.

I am checking in from my phone where I am sitting in front of my TV watching the Olympics. Team USA Women’s soccer played a great game yesterday and appears to be in control of their pool. Team USA Women’s Volleyball stunk – they still have that awful coach who won’t play the best players (edited to fix that it is the Volleyball team and their coach that stunk, not the basketball team). The Chinese team was very tall and he kept his tallest player on the bench. Getting ready to watch Team USA Women’s Basketball play Japan at noon MST.

    See all y’all later!

  12. Tuesday Meese. It’s going to be 89 here in Kingston today – humidity 94 %.

    Puerto Rico

For over a century, Puerto Rico’s political status has been a contentious issue with significant implications for its 3.2 million inhabitants and over 6 million Puerto Ricans residing overseas. Despite numerous plebiscites and growing dissatisfaction among Puerto Ricans, American officials and the U.S. Congress have persistently failed to resolve this problem, largely due to ignorance, colonialist attitudes, and an unwillingness to consider independence as a viable option.

    • I hope you had a chance to watch the Team USA Women’s basketball game. Those Japanese players were very energetic and gave our girls fits! That is probably the most full court press they have seen in years. We have a very good team and the half-time adjustments were excellent – it is good to see what can happen when a coach knows her players. We had a bit of a scare when Kahleah Copper went down – she is one of our favorite players on the Mercury team. She came back into the game in the 4th quarter.

      • I was worried for Copper too! I think Japan’s coach made a poor decision at the end. Our girls almost lost that game.

    • I think faux hillbilly JD Vance is going to be in Phoenix today. He will face the wrath of the Angry Cat Ladies who are pretty upset with his misogyny and not shy about expressing it. He and his techbro garbage friend Blake Masters, who is running for a congressional seat in the Phoenix suburbs, also had a “cat lady” clip surface. These guys are so out and proud about their hatred for women it is really worrisome to think of them being in power. I hope we can keep their puppetmaster Peter Theil from getting his way. Right-wing gazzilionaires who think nothing of dropping a few billion to buy some politicians are a frightening thing. It is still one person one vote but we need to get our people to ignore the barrage of negative ads their cash will buy.

  13. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 75 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 99. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. The humidity is finally below 40% at the start of the day – yesterday it started out at 60%, ick!

It is primary election day in Arizona with mainly local elections on the Democratic ballot. The Republicans have some congressional primaries including one in CD 8 where tRump endorsed two of the candidates. I wonder how he thinks endorsements work? In any event, they are all garbage and we have to hope that we have someone to run against whoever wins there. One local Republican state senate candidate here got crosswise with the police over her complaints about a traffic ticket (71mph in a 35mph zone) and lost the police union endorsement. Ha! She is one of the craziest of the crazies and it will be nice to see her gone. The district will probably stay Republican unless we have a blue wave but at least it will go from “batsht crazy Republican” to “ordinary Arizona Republican” – some of those guys can be reasoned with.

I had a scare last night when breaking news came across that started “Breaking news: Roy Cooper is said to” and then the rest of the message was cut off on my phone. My heart sunk – I thought it meant that a 69 year old white guy with no personality had been picked as VP because he came from a possible swing state. Thankfully, it was that he withdrew his name, claiming that he never wanted to be considered anyway. I still want Mark Kelly – he brings something that none of the other candidates bring and can provide a way for the Republicans for Biden voters to vote for the Democratic ticket. Plus, he can probably bring his purple state with him; none of the other candidates can do that.

I managed to get sidetracked yesterday morning when I needed to focus on a project and by the time I addressed a small crisis, it was time to break for the Olympics. Today I have errands to run so I need to see if I can get back on track. USA Women’s soccer doesn’t play until tomorrow (Wednesday) and USA Women’s basketball doesn’t play until Thursday so I won’t need to break to watch important matchups for a couple of days.

    See all y’all later!

  14. Good morning. Slept in, and I have multiple reminders set to log off early to go to the gym. Biden’s visit to Austin yesterday was good — loved the SCOTUS proposal. It did take twice as long as normal to get home, but I cued up some happy music so I didn’t mind. Wfh today, my only applications are people I haven’t been able to reach for weeks, so I’ll get in my continuing ed requirement. There’s a technology for visually impaired people class that’s actually pretty tough. And out IT department notified us yesterday that it’s time for security training.

  15. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s 76 F. in Ashburned this morning, with 86 F. humidity. Whether or not we get rain showers remains to be seen. The sky has been overcast since dawn.

This morning even the WaPo admitted that our area (Loudoun County and part of Fairfax) are in extreme drought. We are asked to take 5-minute showers, only run full loads in the washer and dishwasher, and so on. We are now 5 inches under normal for rainfall for the year. They do say August might be wetter.

Yesterday both The Man and I were practically comatose. Planning the party, shopping for it, carrying all the stuff there, and so on, took so much energy that yesterday I couldn’t do much. I always feel vaguely surprised that I can’t get as much done in one day as I used to.

Anyway, Dearly enjoyed his party and presents. Darling Daughter and I went to the spa and had pedicures—she had her nails painted lavender and I opted for sparkly purple. We had loads of fun catching up on things. After the party was over, we had a photo shoot with me wearing a blonde wig. I plan to appear some time as Weird Cousin Ingrid from Stockholm, but I’m not sure when. Daughter changed my Facebook pic to this blonde person, much to my friends’ and family’s surprise.

This morning Dearly and I will go for haircuts, and this afternoon I hope to do something on my own project.

Am madly happy about all the money and excitement for Kamala! Wish they’d hurry with the new merch! On Sunday I wore my Kamala as Superwoman t-shirt to the spa; yesterday I wore my pink “With fear for our democracy, I dissent. Justice Sonia Sotomayor” t-shirt to the Progressives’ reception. Our newly elected Congressperson was there, as were several other electeds. Was pleased to see no fewer than a dozen members of the Drama Club there too! Yay!

That’s enough from me. Please, Yemaya, send us rain! And wow, White Dudes for Kamala raised so much money on the Zoom call that Melon Husk suspended their account on Twitter! Whaddaya think of THAT?

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  16. It’s 82 going to 95 heat index 105 and sunny. Breezy too so it wasn’t that bad hanging out the clothes this morning. One cat still out. I wish they wouldn’t do that. I always worry once they’ve left the back yard. And they always do. The twins anyway. I can usually catch Cloud before he’s done more than saunter to the fenceline.

I’m not going to ask of Kamala Harris what I know she can’t say while she’s still a part of the Biden administration – but I’d feel a whole lot better (yes, I’m supporting her) and more wholehearted about her if I knew she was going to shut down support of Israel while Israel is committing war crimes/genocide. Not only should no man (human being) be above the law, no country should be either.

    I haven’t heard much of anything from anybody so I’m assuming they’re all trucking along. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  17. Good morning, 60 and light rain in Bellingham today. I had a lab appointment yesterday and then slept the rest of the day away. I’ve got a long list for today but will nap as needed :) I went to the new anticoagulation lab yesterday and to my relief it will be just fine. So the transfer to new docs is done and I now have just one medical computer system to navigate, yay! Best wishes to all.

  18. Wednesday Meese. Another crappy weather day here. Spirits lifted when I saw this:

    Puerto Rico

    Tomorrow’s topic – Caribbean Matters
