Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: August 4th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. THANK GODDESS, bfitz! Bloody hail, life doesn’t have to be this hard! Hope for a sunny September and October so perhaps you can catch up. {{{Bfitz}}}!

  2. Wednesday Meese. 63 here in Kingston, going up to only 75 with rain. Will spend the day celebrating Nad’s 25th year of initiation to the priesthood.
    I was elated to see Black Kos get some attention over at orange:

    Puerto Rico

  3. Good morning. Loved the rally yesterday. I didn’t have a favorite among the contenders, so I’m perfectly happy with Walz. He’s smart and funny. Though wow — Shapiro tore the roof off the place, I hope the Harris/Walz administration has a place for him. Happy Wednesday, y’all!

  4. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 73 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 95. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast and rain expected this evening. We had a short noisy storm with impressive cloud to ground lightning right around suppertime and then a gullywasher at about 11:30pm. There is a layer of clouds over the mountains so no star viewing today. Yesterday, it was clear and I saw quite a few stars including Orion’s Belt which is not visible here during parts of the year. It is a sign that Autumn is approaching.

    I am fine with Tim Walz as VP. Kamala doesn’t need a running mate who will be spending his time in office planning his presidential run. It sounded like Josh Shapiro showed up at his interview with a list of policy points and the roles he expected to play. Sheesh! Someone called Walz a Happy Warrior, a reference to another Minnesota Vice President, Hubert H. Humphrey. Perhaps “happy” will be a pleasing contrast to the non-stop firehose of hate and fear coming from the Republicans. I do get a little PTSD because of how much Walz looks like an older Tim Kaine – that did not turn out very well. By the way it is no shock that Republicans are saying that Shapiro was rejected because he is Jewish and that Kamala (married to a Jewish man) is antisemitic; if he had been picked they would have said he was picked because he is Jewish and that Doug picked him. They are so predictable.

    I had an early morning project, important Olympics watching (the soccer girls won!) and an afternoon dental appointment so I am a bit behind today. I need to catch up so that I can sit and watch the USA Women’s Basketball team take on Nigeria in the quarterfinals at 12:30pm MST.

    See all y’all later!

    • I got my 3rd 508 Resource Limit Reached message of the week just now. I am going to have to bite the bullet and get the Moose moved to a better hosting service. This is a really simple web site that does nothing but post text and links – there is no reason for it to suck this badly.

      I will keep you posted with the status. I have a few projects with August 31st deadlines so it might not be until after Labor Day. Or I might get inspired and do it this weekend.

      You are lucky, to see that!

  5. It’s 69 and overcast. Heading for 93 with a heat index of 95 – it’s kind of humid to be that low. We shall see. Back to waiting on SolarEdge. Occasional emails to stop a fraud charge have worked so far but it’s been 6 weeks – of the 7 immediately following the solstice – the system’s been down. We hit week 7 without at least a shipping date and they’re going on blast at the least. Another we shall see.

    I hauled out my camera, hoping it has enough stabilizing to get relatively clear photos, and now can’t figure out how to download them onto my computer. I get as far as plugging in the memory chip and opening “D drive” but from there I’m stuck. There’s nothing on my list of options that includes download. Sigh. I’ll work on it again later. Maybe it’s just that my brain is fuzzy. Meanwhile, I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • If the photos are on a D drive, you just have to copy and paste them to where you want them. It is not really “download” but more “transfer” now.

      • At the moment I can’t get them to open up or to cut and paste. Sigh. I’m not a technophobe but I’m certainly technically illiterate. I’ll try again in a bit. Thank you. At least I can stop looking for a download option.

  6. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! We woke up to fat, ugly gray clouds and humid heat. Wouldn’t have minded if those clouds had presaged rain but as usual, they cleared off and now we’re getting weak sunshine. Right now it’s 80 F., going up to 86 F.

    Feel rather p.o’d this morning with first-world problems. Leading Man, who was supposed to return from vacation either yesterday or today, hasn’t been in touch at all. This makes me suspect that Wifey, who has never liked the idea of his doing the play in the first place, has talked him out of it. Well, luckily there are many convenient ponds to drown myself in—problem is, they all smell bad and they’re only a foot deep.

    I must have been over-excited yesterday because I couldn’t get to sleep. Consequently I woke up feeling cross. Still do.

    Just went to the farmers’ market (a little display stand on Wednesdays) and bought two lots of ready-to-eat peaches to make the no-churn peach ice cream and peach tarts for my writers. Three of them will be out tomorrow, all for excellent reasons, but when the class isn’t full, I feel bad. I just invited a man who’s on the waiting list to join us. We’ll see, as bfitz says.

    OK, that’s enough gritchin’ from yrs truly. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  7. Good morning. Got my walk/run in — it’s 80 degrees at 5 freaking 30 am. Ugh. But: 1 mile at 23:23, which is pretty good for me. And there’s a new Snow Patrol song. It’s not for running, but I can’t stop listening to it. And it hasn’t made me cry at all, that’s allergies.

  8. Good Thursday morning, Meese! We had RAIN last night! Dearly, whose hearing is abnormally acute, said it began at midnight. It was still doing it at 6 a.m. and only stopped at 7 a.m.

    This morning I have to make the peach tarts and find some way to carry the frail pastries through the long halls to the meeting room. My darling chevalier sans peur et sans reproche is meeting me as usual opposite the Pub at 1 p.m. He can carry the little cooler with the ice cream, as it won’t fit into the cart. It’s 75 F. in Ash-No-Longer-Burned, going up to 80 F. or something.

    Meese, I have the job! It’s editing (a very basic edit) three novels written by a Witch. They’re a trilogy. She’ll pay me on completion of the work, I’ve been told. This will keep me off the streets and out of the pool halls for the month of September.

    Tonight I’m going to a casting call to find out about the plays being presented in the fall. Will not try out for a part, but I want to see if I can be useful in other ways. Also, if Leading Man is back from his vacation, I’ll remind him that the playlet is due to be enacted NINE days from now and we need to rehearse!

    It’s a nugly day outside but I’ll do my best to liven it up. Tonight, a purple gauze “boyfriend” shirt over a white tank and white shorts. This afternoon, I’m not sure. It’s rather cool with the air conditioning. Might have to wear long sleeves.

    The 7.1 earthquake in Japan worried me until the map showed that it was nowhere near Tokyo, where Younger Son and Grandson are having a holiday. Hope they’re OK.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  9. It was 67 when I got up, 72 now, and heading for 92. It was also sunny a bit earlier but the clouds are moving in. We’re supposed to get rain and cooling into the low 80s for the weekend. That’ll be nice. Another day of waiting on SolarEdge. sigh. Need to close up the house and get started on my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 88 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 95. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The tradeoff of “lower temperatures” this time of year is “higher humidity”, for example the Feels Like is 91. I prefer it to be dryer but the temperature respite is welcome. We are having a great monsoon season, filling our reservoirs and giving our cacti moisture to store.

    I was working earlier and then had to run some errands so I just have time for a quick check-in and then I have to get off my computer.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Friday Meese. 68 going up to 78 with rain here in Kingston. I’m getting ready to watch team USA women’s basketball play Australia today

    Puerto Rico

    • It was a good basketball game – we led start to finish. We were happy to see Copper get a lot of minutes! I think I will watch the France vs Belgium game at noon to “scout” the opposition. :) I think I would rather play France, Belgium gave us fits in pool play.

  12. Good morning. My water heater is out, the repair/replace people gave me a time of 1-4, my boss talked me into taking the day. I’m lucky this happened in August, the “cold” water is so warm that showers haven’t been that bad. The cost will suck. It’s the same company that did my a/c, I’m hoping they’ll just add this to that bill. Anyway, hi.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} It’s true you can take “cold” showers in August in TX and it’s not too bad, but it’ll be good for you to have hot water again. Maybe once you’ve got the total you could update your DK help list posting? I know not very many people will see it but some people will and you might get a little help towards that at least. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • One of the things that surprised me the most about moving to Arizona is that we no longer have cold water out of our faucets most of the year. At first we thought the plumbing was messed up (switched hoses) – then we realized that the underground water sources are never going to be underground enough to be cool in the desert.

      Good luck getting things fixed quickly!

  13. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 73 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 100. Mostly cloudy right now but will clear later. Chance of monsoon rain this afternoon and evening. Yesterday, downtown and west of downtown got slammed by a downpour that left about an inch of rain at the airport, almost setting a rain record. Sadly, some homes were left without power. We want the rain but certainly not the destruction that comes with the high winds bringing in the storms.

    The first sets of polls after the Kamala nomination show that Democratic enthusiasm for our presidential ticket has soared. Cook Politics changed Arizona, Nevada and Georgia from Lean Republican to Toss-Up and the Marquette poll showed a virtual tie. One especially tasty tidbit from the Marquette poll shows that when third party candidates are added, they take more votes away from tRump than Kamala, giving her a 5 point lead. RFK Jr is now hurting tRump instead of helping him. That is good news in states where he is on the ballot which are mostly purple states. Also too, 58% of the responders thought tRump was too old to be president – live by the “he’s a drooling dotard”, die by the “he’s a drooling dotard.” Chickens coming home to roost.

    Finally, the captive press is reporting that TFG is increasingly frantic. The headlines this morning shared the confused, unhinged nature of his public appearance in Florida. Good. I am more and more convinced that he is going to blurt out in public some of the things you know he is saying in private about Kamala Harris. People who plan to vote for that pile of garbage need to know exactly what they are choosing – they will deserve to be forever shunned for that vote. By the way, what’s with the Secret Service letting JD Vance approach Air Force Two in Wisconsin? JD Vance does not have some sort of permission to enter secured space simply because tRump picked him as his VP choice! I am worried that the Secret Service does not realize that Vance and the people who travel with him are dangerous. I hope Kamala adds her own security for campaign rallies.

    I woke up very late – thank goodness I had no early morning tasks to do on client computers today! I do have a few things I would like to get done before I shut down my computer and watch the USA Women’s Basketball game.

    See all y’all later!

    • Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s 77 F. humid degrees here in windy Ashburn. It rained on and off all yesterday—thank you, Debby. Tornado warnings and flood worritings totally dominated the airwaves, so we finally turned off the TV and went to bed in disgust. Two male forecasters were arguing all this morning about what would happen today, so we’ve turned off the TV again in disgust.

      Yesterday the Writers eagerly devoured my homemade No Churn Peach Ice Cream, declaring it to be delicious. Mary Ann said then when she was growing up there were two peach trees in the backyard and her family made peach ice cream all the time. I made it especially for her, since she has worked very hard on the anthology, which looks great. We’ll be getting a proof copy one day soon.

      I invited two guests to the meeting as three of our regular members were out, and that caused quite a fracas. Duh. I should have asked, but if I had, I know they would have said “no.” I’m tired of people missing meetings, even though I know they have good reasons for it.

      Leading Man is finally back in town and has promised to look for a tie and a shirt that buttons in his wardrobe. He says he hasn’t worn either in years. I went to the Cast Call and am rather attracted by the 15-minute play called “Silent Movie,” in which no one speaks a word—it’s all facial expressions.

      Well, enough from me. I did enjoy the break from politics yesterday. Wishing everyone at the Pond a good day!

  14. It’s 70 heading for 86 and no heat index. Sunny at the moment but the cool front in the process of slowly moving in is supposed to bring rain over the weekend and Monday. We definitely need the rain. I hope it’s not heavy/too unpleasant to go out in as my friend Natalia will be coming over tomorrow morning and we’re planning to hit the resale shops while we catch up on things. I did (with basket’s help) figure out how to get the photos off my camera and on my computer. There is a stabilizer on the camera. The photos aren’t crystal clear but they aren’t fuzzy either. Anyway, I now have a new batch of photos for my evening signoff at Xitter/Spoutible/Bluesky. But now it’s time to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  15. Good morning, 61 and sunny but the air is smoky and hazy. Lisa an Ryan were going hiking today but due to the air quality are coming here for lunch instead. We’ll chose where to go when they get here. It will be nice to visit with them. RonK is picking blackberries but should be back in time to join us. Best wishes to all.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 79 degrees in Tucson ???? with an expected daytime high of 100. Sunny skies are in the forecast, possible rain this afternoon and evening. The weather guy said it is starting to look like late August already when the temperatures are much lower in the morning and rarely into triple digits. I hope he is right! I think it is because we have had a good monsoon – it is looking like it will turn out to be the 5th best for rain since they started keeping records.

    Kamala was in Arizona yesterday (in Phoenix) and they showed clips from her rally on the local news. It looked big and exciting! The big rallies are great for bandwagoning, excitement breeding more excitement and the feeling that you want to be part of what is happening. Kamala is up in more states and TFG is finally getting the treatment in the press that he deserves – they are describing him accurately as a Fox News Grampa whose brain cells have been burned away by watching and believing and repeating stories that have no basis in reality. Be careful what you wish for, Republicans! You wanted this election to be about an old man looking like he is flailing and it very well might be.

    I want to try to get caught up on accounting projects and organizing my to-do stack and to-do list. I have literally thousands of emails that I need to sort out of my Inbox, some from former clients, some from old finished projects, and a lot of newsletters that I subscribe to but don’t read. Nice quiet Saturdays are a perfect time to do that sort of work. USA Women’s Soccer plays in the Gold Medal round today at 8am MST and USA Women’s Basketball plays in the Gold Medal round tomorrow at 6:30am MST – it has been a good Olympics for the women’s team sports that I follow.

    See all y’all later!

  17. Good morning. Yesterday was…….long. The water heater guys were finally done shortly before 9 pm. But I have a new water heater. I’ve got to seriously up my number of paid surveys & studies to pay for it, but hot showers are very nice. Anyway, today: groceries and cooking. Maybe I’ll get to the gym since I didn’t yesterday.

  18. Well, meeses, MY “resource limit” has finally been reached.

    I am going to move the Moose website tomorrow afternoon. If all goes well, when you log in on Monday (and you may need to log in), you will be on motleymoose.com instead of motleymoose.net. I plan to leave the old site intact because I believe strongly in having fallback plans when doing data migrations.

    I will repeat this message in tomorrow morning’s post for those who don’t make it in today.

    • Thank you, Jan. (Now all I have to do is remember how to put the link on my toolbar once you’re done. LOL.)

    • If the new site does not work for you, please contact me at my hotmail account. I no longer read or post on Twitter – I am exclusively on BlueSky.

  19. It was 62 when I got up, 67 now, and is only supposed to get to 82 today. I probably won’t turn on the A/C at all and may not even close up the house (other than the west side windows). Only drawback is my hands are cold. But not achy cold, thank heavens.

    My friend Natalia will be here in about 45 minutes and I’ll be offline most if not all the morning (and possibly part of the afternoon). That will be very nice, however long I have with her. She hasn’t had time for a visit, or even really to keep in touch via email, in months. Meanwhile I’ll get my boosting day started. Especially getting the needs thread is up at Xitter so I’ll be able to find everyone to boost when I do get back. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
