Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: August 25th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 72 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 99. Sunny skies are in the forecast with a slight chance of afternoon and evening rain showers.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 59 going up to 84 here in Kingston.

    Puerto Rico

    “And now with this problem with the light, I can’t get up and keep walking, because I can’t walk. My whole body hurts… forgive me for feeling this way, right? But I suffer a lot for my family, because my life doesn’t matter to me anymore.” Elderly couple sleep in vehicle because of LUMA.

  3. Good morning. Got my tea steeping, went out to get some tea concentrate to add to it so I can have really strong tea. Later today: dish up breakfast & lunch for the week; I have an extra in-office day this week, ugh. My manager thinks we should be wfh even more than we are, but the directors decided the agency needed two days of everyone being in the office. Just because. Anyway, I hope everyone has a great day today.

  4. It was 75 when I got up. I turned off the A/C, just in case, and opened the door & window onto the sunporch for the cats while I vacuumed. It was 80 outside, 75 inside, when I finished and closed up again. We’re going to 91, heat index 100, today. Summertime. But cloudy afternoon summertime. Yesterday we generated 13.6 KWHs – 68.68 is the m-t-d with exactly 7 days left in the month.

    Housework’s mostly done. I’ll put on the clean sheets later when my back stops yelling at me. And whatever my son Lang has time for this afternoon – whether it’s to cut a pork loin into chops for me or just drop off another rotisserie chicken – I’ll deal with protein then. For now, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s a fairish morning in Ashburned. I’d really like to go for a walk as soon as I’m tidied up. Right now it’s a pleasant 75 F., going up to 89 F. later. I’ve finished reviewing our anthology—it looks great, by the way—and must start my “track changes” review of the Witch trilogy soon.

    Woke up far too early this morning. I had some sort of dream about a baby, goodness knows why. I seemed to be responsible for it. Haven’t I done this already? Weird.

    Not much to say (aren’t you relieved?), so I’ll just wish everyone at the Pond a lovely day. I might need a rest soon. Blessed be.

  6. Monday Meese. It’s 61 here, with a thick fog, going up to 83 with rain.
    I continue to be very disturbed about the ongoing power outages in Puerto Rico. My friends over there are now washing down their apartment with vinegar – to get rid of the mold which grew as a result of having no power for days. :(

    Puerto Rico

    Today, during the presentation of all the Alliance candidates throughout Puerto Rico, the energy and optimism regarding the elections was evident. This political and historic effort will defeat the two-party system and allow the construction of a #PatriaNueva that meets the aspirations of our people.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 73 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 99. Sunny skies are in the forecast. There was a gentle cool-ish breeze on my patio today when I went out to look at my stars but it won’t last long. Yesterday’s early morning low was not low enough and we did not get our hike in.

    It is a tell that House Republicans have shifted their investigations from Joe Biden to Kamala Harris. It was never about “rooting out corruption”, it was simply political just like the hearings on Hillary Clinton’s emails were intended to damage the Democratic nominee. It will be interesting to see how many House Republicans, especially those in D+ districts, are willing to tick off their constituents by being part of that.

    No one should be surprised that tRump is now saying he probably won’t debate Kamala. Even a man with a self-concept not based in any sort of reality can see that she will mop the floor with him. I personally hope they don’t debate because I am not sure I can watch it. I can’t watch tRump, his face and voice nauseate me, and I still have PTSD from his menacing hover over Hillary in 2016 in those debates. Goddess, this election season cannot end soon enough for me.

    This is the last week of August and it is nice and tidy with no August days leaking over into next week. I have three projects that I would like to get done before I flip the page on my Gregorian calendar so I best get to it.

    See all y’all later!

  8. It’s 74 now & I just closed up the house (opened it 2 hours ago). Sunny at the moment and heading for 94 but the heat index isn’t supposed to get above 98 today so that’s good. Yesterday we generated 16.75 KWHs. The m-t-d is 85 and if we do as well today as we did yesterday we’ll be over 100 by sundown.

    If there are 8 people in Fayetteville, AR who needs jobs and are actually willing to do the job if hired – not just stand around reading their phones when they deign to show up – my son hasn’t found them yet. Aashirs nani says that in this economy everyone who actually has a work ethic also has a job and what’s left are the ones who wan a paycheck as a sort of participation prize. Anyway, it was a very short visit yesterday afternoon. He hasn’t been able to attend gurdwara for 3 weeks but he did manage to go to Sam’s and get stuff for his house and mine. And to slice up that pork loin into chops for me. Then he had to get his own stuff home and go to work. I grilled them (George Foreman electric/clamshell grill) all and now have 5 pork chops in the fridge and 35 cooked ready-to-eat pork chops in the freezer. Protein through September. Yay.

    Wish I knew what it means when the laptop does 3 beeps. No message. Laptop’s charge is over 80%. Doesn’t seem to be any problems. Oh well. Time to be off to my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  9. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s another “meh” day in our severe drought place, currently 75 F. The whole week will be ‘ot, ‘umid, and ‘orrible. They’ve predicted thunderstorms and rain for mid-afternoon, but of course that’s rubbish. If I really thought it would rain, I’d bring the porch cushions in.

    Today I start the paid freelance work. Slept until 7 this morning and was pleasantly surprised when I woke that I feel quite energetic.

    Also have a tiresome bunch of changes to make to the script of “Elevator.” I’m the “Elevator Voice.” Hope I don’t have to stay for the whole bloody evening while Teams B and C rehearse.

    (Giggle) Will check occasionally to hear whether DFG has weaseled out of the debate so that our Madame VP gets a town hall all to herself.

    Never saw the moon the whole time She was around. Sigh. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Using Dred Scot to try to disqualify Kamala Harris from the presidential nomination is the absolute bottom. The sad thing is that most people won’t even know about what the Republicans are doing and how horrible it is because they no longer teach history in the United States. Goddess help us if this gets to the MAGAt Supreme Court.

  10. Good polluted Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s 71 F. in Ashburn at the moment, going up to 91 F. Yesterday three things happened: we had a power outage (no reason given) lasting from 1 p.m. until 7:45 p.m., I had my nails done, and I came down with some sort of ghastly gastrointestinal illness. I never came down with this kind of thing in the days when I used to wear a mask when I went out in public.

    Anyway, I feel absolutely dreadful and plan to go back to bed soon. This illness has occurred at a most inconvenient time. Emailed the Director to tell him I wouldn’t be at rehearsal tonight. He’ll probably have a fit, but really, I can’t be more than a few feet from the nearest Throne Room. “Elevator Voice” is in every scene of the play.

    On the good side, I did have two productive interactions yesterday, one with a writer from my group, in person—we were there in front of the fountain when the lights miraculously came back on—and one with the organizer of the Authors’ Festival, by email. Oh, hail, I’ve got to be on in-house TV on Friday, so I hope I feel better by tomorrow.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. We’re under a pollution alert here.

  11. Good morning. I got out and walked — had to be careful in some spots because the weirdest thing happened, water fell from the sky overnight. Water just came falling out of the sky. Astonishing. And there were puddles of it on my route, so I had to walk carefully. Anyway, got to savor my one wfh day this week.

  12. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 75 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 99. It is cloudy over the mountains but we should have sunny skies with a chance for afternoon and evening rain. The week ahead looks like upper 90s but still not the cool and dry mornings I am longing for. Soon!

    I only have time this morning for a scan of the headlines. I put two articles up in tabs to read later – or not read, as I may choose. I think the Harris-Walz campaign needs to start countering the negative ads that the Orange Anal Cyst is showing on TV. For every ad showing Kamala personally responsible for every crime committed by someone who came over the border, legally or illegally, they need a positive ad touting her credentials to carry us forward – with clips from her DNC speech. Negative ads tend to set difficult to undo narratives unless people have something positive to counter it: “I don’t think that nice person could have been responsible for that criminal doing that terrible thing!” I know for a fact that it is disheartening to people like me, I hate them and it is not enough to mute them and turn away – they leap off the screen.

    I have a busy day of projects and meetings and then morning errands so I best get to it.

    See all y’all later!

  13. It’s 71 heading up to 95 and sunny at the moment. Heat index isn’t supposed to get to 100 today – but it wasn’t supposed to yesterday and it did it anyway. We generated 16.8 KWHs and the m-t-d is at 101.7 – we’ve got a good chance of reaching 180 by end of week/month. Maybe. Rain’s supposed to move in Friday (along with cooler weather).

    Cats aren’t eating their regular kibble. New bag of course. sigh. I’m mixing it with some junk food (Meow Mix kitten food) in the hopes they’ll eat enough to stay healthy. I’m hoping it’s just the heat and they’ll be back to eating normally soon. And I won’t have to go to the trouble and expense of finding another food for them. (I’ve 2 unopened bags in the storage closet. And no, of course I didn’t keep the receipt. Besides, it may be just this particular bag and the others are fine.) Cats!

    Nothing particularly going on in my life or that I know of with anybody else (except Aji’s got a very serious tax bill, several grand, & is almost out of time before “severe penalties” happen). Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  14. Wednesday Meese. 68 going up to 88 here in Kingston. Will spend the day writing, the evening watching women’s basketball.

    Puerto Rico

    • Mercury faced your team (and lost) and now must play the Lynx and the Aces. We need to win one of those two – time is running out to lock in a playoff berth.

  15. Good morning. Did my walk. In the office for my extra in-office day. I was all grumpy and sour about that but then I started reading the tweets about the Swifties for Kamala call last night and Carole King sang Shake It Off and told people to not be afraid to get involved and now I’m just grateful to be alive when this is happening. Y’all, we could really win this time.

  16. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! Another polluted day, partly cloudy, with a predicted high of 100 or 105 F. in Ashburned. Thunderstorms predicted for late evening (rubbish). We are currently 5 inches under normal rainfall for the year to date.

    Spent yesterday mostly in bed. At teatime I rose, showered my grotty self, and put on lots of lavender-scented cream and cologne. It’s our flat, so I can wear as much perfume as I like without felling people like logs. Dearly cooked the steaks, which didn’t seem much affected by their long wait in the fridge. I had to ask him to cut mine into slivers, which I then put over the salad, because I wasn’t sure my stomach could cope.

    Anyway, just before dinner something so stunning happened that I’m still scratching my head over it. Leading Man—you may remember my mentioning him—out of the blue texted me to say his wife was unable to use her ticket to “Mamma Mia” at the Kennedy Center on August 29, and did I want to use it instead, free of charge? It’s a $132 ticket. The Home runs little trips for its residents to various places of interest around DC. I used to go on some of them, but since Covid quarantine I simply haven’t bothered. Anyway, I said yes, how nice of his wife, and thanks very much. “MM” is one of my favorite musicals.

    So it’s happening tomorrow! I’ll be away from 11:30 until 5:30. Dearly said he didn’t mind if I went. Considering the fuss Leading Man’s Mrs. made about his participation in the play, I should have thought I’d be the last person in the world to whom she’d offer a ticket! Can anyone explain this? Or should I simply think of it as a gift from Goddess?

    Got to get moving. On the agenda today: get hair done, eat lightly, resume interrupted work, and get to the gym before dinner for a careful, slow workout. Haven’t gone since Sunday. Makes me feel sad, but there you are: if one is felled by a nasty illness, one can’t help taking it easy.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and a super-fabulous day to our beloved Auntie Madame Vice President and VP-to-be Tim Walz!
