Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: September 1st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 72 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 95. Mostly sunny skies with a chance for monsoonal rain.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 69 here in Kingston, going up to 85. Nice weather for the local parades and BBQs.

    Puerto Rico

  3. Good morning. Tea is steeping, watching local news. I didn’t make it to the gym yesterday, will try again today.

  4. Good Sunday, September first, Moosekind! This morning when we woke up it was like Brigadoon but the fog drifted away, leaving us with cloudy skies. I seem to think we did get a bit of rain yesterday, along horrible scary lightning. Today it will be ugly and 83 F., but tomorrow is supposed to be nice.

    I’m ready to get to work, at last. Woke up again at 5 a.m., what a nuisance. I’ll have to have a nap.

    Anyway, can’t believe it’s this late in the year, must begin planning the Yule budget before long.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  5. It’s 74 heading for 86, heat index 90, and overcast. Widget says we’ll get rain. We shall see. We wrapped up August with right at 170 KWHs. Which actually is pretty good for a third of a month. Especially the last third of the month. The best we’ve ever done in September is 458.8 so 459 is the “miracle” target. The last 2 years we’ve bene right at 300. So the “be good” geal is anything over 350 and the “at least goal is anything over 300. We shall see what we shall see.

    No more pain for my little Rennie cat. And best we can tell (as in what was explained to me about signs I’d missed about actual pain in cats), he was in a lot of it from about Tuesday until he got the pain shot Friday evening. I’m pretty sure he let go and went on by himself about 10 minutes after they gave him the sedative but they gave him the other shot anyway just to be sure. When I get his ashes back in a week or so I’ll bury them in the iris garden with Charlie’s. Freddie and Rennie were twins, I couldn’t always tell them apart if they weren’t together (Freddie’s bigger). So I’m still seeing a black cat where I expect to. Mostly. Just not enough of them. I managed to get down about 700 calories yesterday. I need to do better today or I’ll get sick myself. Life goes on, the chores go on. The routine doesn’t really change just because there’s one less cat except there’s one less food dish to fill. And I think that’s good. Anyway, I’d best get to my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • So sorry your Rennie is gone! It sounds like he is in a better place. I lost a dog to late stage liver disease. It is tough to know when to let them go with that disease because when they can eat they seem better.

      • Yes, he is in a better place. No more pain. And he did cover how bad it was until the last few days. Every time he was eating, I’d think “OK, he’s going to be alright” – because I didn’t know it was already liver disease. I thought we were dealing with some gastrointestinal thing. Liver disease is so very painful. So I definitely don’t regret letting him go. But I miss him.

  6. Good morning. We might get rain today! And our high is only supposed to be around 90. Not really fall weather but close enough. Mapping out my day to try to fix my shower (the water didn’t want to turn off) and go to the gym before they close at 4.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday, Labor Day …

    It is 81 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 97. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The weather widget put some more over 100 degrees days in the forecast – I hope they are wrong. This morning I saw my stars over the mountains but the moon was not visible with the naked eye as she is at 0.4% illumination and will be new this evening at 6:55pm MST. I did have a sighting of a different kind on my deck this morning! I heard what sounded like a light thumping noise and I could not figure out what it was. Suddenly four or five bats flew into the space between the deck and the tree row and put on an aerial show! I think this is when they begin gathering from all over to migrate to Mexico.

    I am laboring today to get ahead of what will be a too busy work week. I did not meet deliveries of two projects that I promised for August. The goal today will be to finish the one that I can airbrush into August and send an email about delays in the other one. I do have to finish organizing my to-do stack which got too tall as I had to set things aside for a project that a long-time client deemed an emergency. I best get to it!

    See all y’all later!

    • I am going to try again with the Edit Comments WordPress plugin (Comment Edit Core). The last time I tried to install it, there were errors but it appears that they made some fixes. I have looked for other plugins but there is really nothing else – the excellent one we had initially required a programming feature named Ajax that was deprecated with a major WordPress release that also broke our web site’s template (the structure that holds the headings, posts, and comments) so it is not available. I will probably begin work around 1pm Eastern so if comments act crazy, that is what is happening. I will report back, I hope with reports of success!

  8. Happy Labor Day, y’all Mooses! It’s a very nice day in Ashburn, 69 F. at this hour, going up to 83 F. We’ll take it. Last night I did not turn on the little fan, so did not wake up with leg cramps until 6 a.m. Someone said to start eating bananas. Can’t stand the things unless they’re mixed with something, so I’ll make Banana Bran Muffins with walnuts on Wednesday.

    Feeling quite happy this morning. I think I can get in some work before we go to the honking big brunch they’ve prepared for us at the Home.

    I figured out some things about my personal life that were bothering me hugely, so I feel better. Also installed DuckDuckGo as my default browser, which was an interesting experience for a technophobe like yrs truly.

    Dearly is having an after-breakfast nap (he gets almost no sleep during the night), so it’s time for me to make myself presentable for the day.

    Bfitz, I hope you’re at least beginning to feel a little better. Grief is grief and takes its time, I know. Blessed be.

    Wishing a good Labor Day to all at the Pond!

    • {{{Diana}}} I’m getting used to it. He always spent part of the day sleeping on a catnip pad on the guest bed and when it gets too hard I just pretend that’s where he is.

      If folks are telling you to eat bananas that translates to “you need more potassium” – if you don’t like bananas, eat something else high in potassium. (In season, cantaloupes are higher in potassium than bananas are. Unfortunately we’re running out of, if not already out of, cantaloupe season.) Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  9. It’s 67 heading for 82 and sunny. I’m wearing long pants, very light cotton ones it’s true, but long pants for the first time since the 1st week of June. We’re having highs in the low 80s and overnights in the low 60s this week. Yesterday we generated 16.1 KWHs which is very good for September.

    I don’t know if Freddie is missing his brother & looking for him or just doing his usual “I’d like to go outside” routine. He’s never been separated from Rennie for longer than a hour or so at least since they started coming to me to be fed and possibly in his whole life. But Rennie was so very much sicker than I knew, so very much closer to going on than I knew. I’m sure the other cats did know. I keep comforting myself with “no more pain, little guy, no more pain”. But it’s hard. Early days. I’ll get used to it.

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thoughts for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • So sorry bfitz. We are preparing ourselves to say good by to two of our grand puppies soon as old age and health issues are becoming more clear. It’s hard to say good bye to our pets even though we know it’s for the best.

  10. Good morning, 59 and light clouds in Bellingham today. Lisa and Ryan were here for a visit yesterday and with their help RonK is moving his writing from dkos to his new Substack account. And with the app installed on my iPad I can read there and clear out my totally clogged gmail inbox. We were struggling but with their help it was much easier.
    Later I clipped the ivy growing around the back steps and RonK cooked enchiladas for supper with our son and Elsa. So a nice easy family day. Best wishes to all.

  11. Tuesday Meese. It’s 47 degrees here in Kingston – going up to 74. These weather shifts are weird.
    Was delighted to see this:

    Puerto Rico
    “Jenniffer says that she supervises Luma, but that HER government does not supervise Luma. But the PNP is the only one that supervises Luma. Jenniffer González gets tangled up in her own lies and is not going to protect you from Luma’s abuses.” #PorPuertoRico #LaAlianzaVa

    “Colonial bipartisanship is largely responsible for the economic and social weakness that Puerto Rico is suffering today.”

    • It’s a weird weather year for sure. The normal “patterns” are not manifesting. We were supposed to start cooling but we are going back over 100 with 104-106 this week. :(

  12. Good morning — went to the gym and ran for 10 minutes! Getting ready for work. Wonder if we’ll be buried in emails. Happy Mon/Tuesday!

  13. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 73 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 95. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    A quick scan of the news shows that the long holiday weekend was pretty quiet with only one candidate actively campaigning. Low energy tRump seems to be doddling to the finish line, preferring the Swamp Garden strategy. I suspect that he feels he has the election in the bag or knows that it won’t matter what the vote it, his followers will rise up and overthrow the government should his vote totals come up short. Or maybe the fun went out of it when he came within an inch of dying? In any event, his horrible nasty ads have not stopped so the campaign here is still on.

    I have a busy week ahead as it will be holiday-shortened and I have some lingering unfinished projects. I am going to grab some waxing moon energy and jump right into it.

    See all y’all later!

    • I have not begun the work on the Comment Editing. I realized I could test it on my WP site first so that I am not rolling it in here and then having to turn it off. Duh! I will let you know if I have success.

  14. Good glorious Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s a perfect day outside, and only 58 F. We’re in for a week of cool, sunny days—lovely.

    Had the night from Hell last night, Goddess knows why. From 10:30 to 2 was okay, but from 2 a.m. until 6 a.m. was a dead loss. Do not understand it.

    Went to the courtyard concert last night, piano and violin, and it was so beautiful I almost lost it. Luckily it was so dark that no one could see the tears trickling down my bony cheek. Had to wear a jacket, it was so chilly. Tonight we’re going to see Miss Nora play volleyball at her high school, so the whole day has to be spent getting ready for that.

    Wishing all at the Pond a great day!

  15. It’s 65 going up to 81 today. It’s not really dark but it’s not sunny either. Yesterday we generated 15 KWHs and the m-t-d is 31.44 – so far so good.

    The A/C didn’t come on yesterday so I’m not going to bother turning it on today. Tomorrow I will if the forecast for slightly warmer holds. Meanwhile I have peanutbutter raisin bread that just came out of the oven and is cooling. It smells lovely. Routines help one get through bad/sad times. Freddie’s been fussing and wanting to go outside. I don’t know if it’s to look for Rennie (what I’m afraid of) or just to chase off Socks and Roger from next door (which is normal). Earicicle sent me a case of Q ginger beer to drink to “sweet Rennie” and she & basket both sent me a steak dinner (from Logan’s Run) last night so I wouldn’t have to cook now that I can eat again. Bless them. Meanwhile I’d best get off to my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • That’s weird. I certainly didn’t intend for this to be here AND as the reply to princesspat. Oh well, it bears repeating.

  16. Good morning, 59 and cloudy in Bellingham today. I seem to have some election angst lately even though it’s looking safer for the Dems. We got our Kamala/ Waltz sign yesterday and it’s in front of the house. It won’t matter in Wa State but I just learned a close neighbor is supporting tRump. It’s unsettling to see his impact on the lives of people I know.
    I didn’t do much yesterday so I’ve got lots of choices to keep me occupied today. Best wishes to all.

    • The problem is that an embrace of Trumpism is not just a vote but a slap in the face to every decent human being. I cannot imagine what makes a person come to the conclusion that our country should be run by a sociopathic felon with a history of sexual abuse.
