Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 6th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good gorgeous Wednesday morning, Moosekind! We have 48 F. in Ashburn, going up to 70 F. It’s a glorious autumn day, so must be sure to get out for a walk and go to the gym if there’s time before we leave for Nora’s volleyball game.

    Yesterday evening, while traipsing about to increase the number of my daily steps, I saw the quarter moon and bowed. She looked lovely in the clear night sky, with the orange glow of sunset fading in the west.

    This weekend I have to find time to sync all our Apple devices with iCloud so it can “find” them if they disappear. I’m told an Apple watch will tell you if you’ve left your phone somewhere, so I might think about getting one of those as well.

    Have to put the finishing touches on the essays written by the writers, highlighting particularly nice bits of language in yellow, and commenting on the overall quality in blue ink. Then to frost the pentacle cakes and make sure I have enough mini-cups for the sparkling cider. Hope we have time to critique every essay tomorrow—there’s one dear fellow that likes to keep discussing the same one, so we very nearly run out of time.

    Dentist appointment at noon, so I must work on getting ready! Very pleased to note that Democrat Angela Alsobrooks SO FAR is way ahead of Rethug Larry Hogan in the race for U.S. Senator for Maryland. The downballot races are just as important. I couldn’t see the “60 minutes” interview with Kamala—will have to try to catch it on YouTube—but the Twitterverse says it was fantastic. Prayers for all in Milton’s path!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and to the Floridians beyond.

  2. It’s 52 heading for 86 and sunny again today. Yesterday we generated 11.8 KWHs and the m-t-d at 98.6 is definitely headed for something good for October.

    I haven’t heard from my brother, which is concerning. Haven’t heard from anybody else either but that’s not so much. Usually I don’t unless something’s wrong. But the rest don’t have a cat 5 hurricane barreling down on them.

    I’ll be going out early afternoon – Walmart, credit union, co-op, grocery store and home. Large circle and hopefully everything I’ll need for a while. (I got milk yesterday.) Next planned/scheduled “going out” will be the eye doctor (1st time in 5 years) next Tuesday. Anyway, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  3. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 72 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 95. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Another crazy busy day appears to be in the works so I best get my walk in while I can.

    See all y’all later!

    • ::: waving at Dee :::

      It should be an entertaining WNBA championship with the evil empire trounced and two teams with good people and good players left, the Liberty and the Lynx. I could root for either one of them.

      • I am (of course) rooting for my home team – the Liberty, tho I also like the Lynx. Gonna be a great game!

  4. Thurs. Meese. 42 here in Kingston.

    Puerto Rico

    BREAKING- Survey of @ElNuevoDia of the candidates for governor of #PuertoRico , less than a month from #Elecciones2024 .

  5. Good morning. Did my walk/run: .8 mi, but I did turn around at the end & run back up the ramp. Disgusted about all the misinformation about hurricane relief. But glad to see the musicians stepping up: Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift, and there’s a huge (30+ songs) collection of music that REM contributed to. Anyway, here I am in the office.

  6. Good Thursday morning, Meese! Up too early but making progress toward the day’s chores. Dearly has fallen asleep for his after-breakfast nap, which means I can’t use the electric mixer. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, it’s another glorious and bone-dry day in Ashburn, 50 F. right now but going up to 63 F.

    This morning I have to make orange-flavored buttercream frosting for the Pentacle Cakes I’m going to serve my writers this afternoon. We have some really interesting essays to discuss this time. Tonight I have to rehearse one-on-one with the assistant director. There’s no rehearsal on Friday night because of Yom Kippur.

    Milton is horrific but did not behave in the predicted way. It seemed to go sideways. Hope I have time to catch up with Kamala’s 60 Minutes interview tomorrow. Have two postcard-writing parties next week, and a meet-and-greet with Tim Kaine.

    Need to get started on my day. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  7. It’s 51 heading for 86 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 11.9 KWHs and the m-t-d at 110.5 is still on track for something good.

    I’ll open the house when the outside temperature are above 60. Short on sleep and fuzzy brained. I need to remember to call BC today & see if my new eye doctor is in network. My old one, at the same eye clinic, was so the new one should be but who knows. My hands are cold and I’m starting to have my cold weather issues with them. Not as badly as last year. At least not so far. But I think part of that is that the laptop keyboard is easier to use than the standard keyboard I was using with the desktop computer.

    Looks like the hurricane is going to miss my brother. Just barely and he’ll get wind and rain but not the dangerous levels. So I guess it figures I haven’t heard from him. That’s the way my family rolls. Anyway, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  8. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 84 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 95. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. We had something move through here yesterday evening that kicked up some pretty high winds and started a wildfire about 40 miles northeast of here. No word on how contained it is right now but I will be keeping an eye on it.

    I got my walk in, got two nagging projects done and will call it a day. The project I should be working on will have to wait until I can brain again.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Good morning. Just a walk today, planning a long workout tomorrow. Still not cool enough for long sleeves, but maybe next week. Obama’s speech yesterday was awesome, reminded me how much I miss him. I have hope that Harris/Walz will win, and maybe even Colin Allred. Anyway, happy Friday to all.

  10. Good gorgeous Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s 48 F. now, going up to 70 F. later. Last night I saw the almost-half moon, looking like a piece of polished white jade, in the clear night sky.

    I keep having leg cramps during the night so I have to get up and stamp, stamp, stamp. good thing we’re on the ground floor. Lawks, I didn’t even get to the gym yesterday and did not get many steps either: just 1.8 miles’ worth. So why the leg cramps? Didn’t have time to eat much, so the scales were pleasant to look up this morning. Not the best night’s sleep, though.

    Yesterday was very intense, what with the writing group and later, the “dry tech” rehearsal of the play. In the writers’ group we were in tears because one of our members is passing through to the Otherworld. Last night during rehearsal the Assistant Director got into the elevator set with me so we could look for light and sound cues. It did help, but I’ll have to use a horrid microphone, the big clumsy thing. The A.D. nixed my idea of using a different accent every night, said my regular voice was pleasant. Huh? News to me.

    Dearly wore himself out yesterday attending to two time-consuming and unfun errands, so I hope he’ll take it easy today. We do need to go to the October Fest down the hall at 11.

    Yikes, my friend is back from vacation and emailed yesterday about the status of the job. Guess who will spend the entire three-day weekend working on Book 3! Luckily I’ve already started it. Will be happy to get it out of the way as there are two other jobs waiting for me, to say nothing of rolling up all my change and exchanging it for money. The draft horses, donkeys, dogs, and wolves are all eagerly awaiting contributions.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  11. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 72 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 97. Sunny skies are in the forecast. We could still smell the Flood Fire last night – it has grown to about 4,400 acres but reports are that it is about 30% contained. We are not expecting any rain in the region – it is so hot and dry, any moisture that does form does not make it to the ground. I think what everyone is hoping that the winds die down which is what is spreading the fires. No word yet on the origin of the fire.

    Both Kamala and Tim were in Arizona this week – I hope they can cut through the malarky that is out there. The Phoenix paper says that Megan McCain will not endorse Kamala. :::yawn::: You can probably count on one hand the number of people in Arizona who would be swayed by her endorsement. I think John McCain’s son’s and wife’s endorsements are more meaningful. Her husband is a Federalist society fascist and it would probably cause a rift in her marriage if she were to endorse Kamala. Sad to be a Stepford wife in 2024.

    Another day waking up planning to get projects done, another day when emergency projects take precedence over everything else.

    See all y’all later!

  12. It’s 65 heading for 88 and sunny. Yesterday we generated 11.79 KWHs and the m-t-d is 122.4 – still on the way to something good.

    We could definitely use some rain. Ground’s hard as a rock and the leaves are yellowing and dropping rather than changing to fall colors. But I have actually seen the moon last 4 nights running. Not clearly of course. Maybe when/if I get new glasses I’ll be able to see her clearly. I’ve got a eye doctor appointment next Tuesday afternoon. New doctor because my old one, the one I’d been going to since 1997, retired in 2020. At least insurance covers that. There’s $100 against a single pair of glasses so that will be the expensive part. Between cats’ health and my own medical this is being an expensive year. sigh.

    Need to get to my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good morning, 41 and foggy in Bellingham today. I’ve had morning appointments this week and have been slow to wake up so I’ve had to hurry out the door. PT continues to go well but the focus is now on strength building so my legs are really sore. I have a new hairdresser and a great cut, yay! Sue was here so my house is clean, Bri was here so the fall garden clean up is underway. We were at the storage locker yesterday so progress is underway with the last of Ron’s parents stuff, whew! Today’s task is to sort my grandmother’s quilts and then to repair and store them in a better way. We are the caretakers of generations of family memories so my goal this fall is share what we know with the rest of the family. Best wishes to all.

  14. Good morning. I’m getting ready for my Saturday workout, hoping I actually get my mile. I have a really full day, workouts, groceries, there’s apparently one more bill from my crash that I have to go pay in person, and maybe squeeze in some cooking.

  15. Good Saturday morning, Meese, on this October 12th that used to be known as Columbus Day. “Indigenous Peoples Day” is better.

    t’s 48 F. here in Ashburger on what looks like a gorgeous day. I’m going to stay away from legacy media news, partly because I don’t want to become depressed, and partly because I have to finish editing the third book of the trilogy and memorize my script some more. Also—need to find time to exercise and go to Harris Teeter for supplies. I have looked forward to this three-day weekend as an occasion when I don’t have to wear a bra. I just wanna hang loose!

    Having big trouble with the Pond today, despite logging out and logging back in no fewer than three times. Now it wants me to supply my name, email address, and website.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and to the poor souls left homeless by Helene and Milton.

    • I had to log in to the Moose as well. I am not sure if it is on a timer (“you have not supplied credentials in x days”) or what. I will clear site cache this morning as that sometimes helps. When you have the login failure, if you close the Moose, reopen it but click immediately on My Moose to get the login screen, you might have better luck.

  16. Saturday Meese. Much warmer (more like fall normal) here this morning – it’s 55.
    Getting ready to post Caribbean Matters at 9AM EDT- all about the election fraud/dead people voting in Puerto Rico

    In Puerto Rico, more than 2,000 people sleep on the streets every night. On this island, which was once a model of development and growth, there are now countless cases like that of this young woman. Meanwhile, corruption and waste reign in the government.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 68 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 95. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I have windows and patio doors open to bring in the cool air. The moon is not where I can catch a good glimpse of her but I did see the Evening Star a couple of nights ago. She rises in the middle of the afternoon and sets around 1am so I would be able to see her probably if I were outside but at night if she is not visible from my deck or my windows, I don’t see her.

    Polls are apparently showing tRump ahead in Arizona. I think the pollsters may not be getting an honest answer from the people here because Republicans who can’t stand TFG are not going to tell pollsters who they are going to vote for. Early voting has started, I am waiting for my mail ballot to arrive and then will fill it out and bank it right away. Barack Obama will be in Tucson next Friday to energize the peeps – no word yet on the venue. The Harris campaign shut down their Tempe office (liberal suburb of Phoenix) after it was shot up for the third time. Good plan, there are too many crazy people with guns here and too few people in law enforcement who care to rein them in.

    I will have three quiet days to get things done that can’t be done during a busy day when clients are working and needing things. Next week is going to be hectic – I have projects scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday so I need to get caught up this weekend because there won’t be any chunks of time available for accounting and planning projects next week.

    See all y’all later!

  18. It’s 62 heading for 91 and sunny. Yesterday we generated 11.6 KWHs and the m-t-d is 134 – still on track for something good. Although, as much as I love the sun & electricity generation, I must admit we need rain. Not clouds with no rain, real water from the skies.

    It’s totally not surprising that a genocidal colonizer culture would honor a genocidal colonizer. Honoring his/their victims is better. Reparations would be as close to best as we can do. But of course we won’t. That’s not what genocidal colonizer cultures do. And a totally bad day for Aji. Her beloved oldest sister, the only member of her family who actually loved her, was murdered on this date. It’s decades ago now but it doesn’t hurt any less.

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Energy to everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
