Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 27th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 66 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 91. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. My reaction to the powerful speech from Michelle Obama

  3. Good morning. So, I did it yesterday! Made it to a mile! It was hard, but I did it — and went to kickboxing later in the day. And made next week’s breakfast & dinner; oh — and the Halloween music diary went well. Here’s me with my coach:

  4. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s 44 F. in Ashburned right now, going up to 60 F. In a few minutes I have to put the ingredients for the beef stew in the slow cooker. For “desert,” as people seem to refer to it nowadays, we’ll have baked pears, which I love. They require no added sugar and are delicious. I’ll also bake a gingerbread for Dearly, if I have time.

    It’s partly cloudy outside, with the blue veiled by white, just like yesterday. It became so cloudy yesterday afternoon that I actually began to hope a little, but in the end, it was the usual drought.

    Went to see “Seabiscuit” last night. I’d seen it when it first came out, but I’d forgotten what a slow, slow start it had. And Great Mother, that poor jockey really took a beating! Loved the way he quoted bits of poetry during it, especially when he paraphrased Shakespeare’s “Though she be but little, she is fierce.”

    Today is my Texas grandson’s 27th birthday. Wonder if I’ll ever see him again before I pop my clogs. He’s been here a couple of times but it was years ago.

    I have to go to a book launch in Leesburg this afternoon. Need to study my lines again too, I screwed up twice Friday night and we open on HALLOWEEN! Eek!

    Dearly is having a nap. I must go to do my chores. Wishing everyone at the Pond a wonderful day!

  5. It’s 61 heading for 78 and overcast but starting to clear off at the moment. Yesterday we generated 10 KWHs. With the m-t-d at 293.8 it’s very likely we’ll reach 300 by sundown. Even with a cloudy start.

    It being cloudy, I overslept. Which other than delaying the cats’ breakfast, a serious issue as they let me know, was a good thing since I’d only gotten 4 hours the night before. Got my Sunday housecleaning chores done but I’m really late starting my boosting day. So I’d best get to it. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Monday Meese. 35 here in Kingston, Am sleepy cause was up late following the firestorm that ensued after the Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden.
    We got on the phone with my husband’s PR family members who live in PA. They are mobilizing GOTV for Kamala
    Too many tweets to post – this is a good summary video

  7. I ran 1.1 mi this morning! Yay me. In the office, sneezing my head off. I wonder if “cedar” (really mountain juniper) is making an early appearance. We had to turn everything off over the weekend because of electrical work in the building, and I’ve got my computer tower on but the screens won’t wake up. Grrrr.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 64 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 88. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The weather widget says that tomorrow’s high will be 68 (with a low of 48). Yikes! I prepped my furnace in case I need it – dust collects on the coils and when it burns off it can smoke and set off the smoke detector. The key is to have a fan up near the blower, blowing any smoke away from the smoke detectors. No smoke this time but definitely a burning odor. Ready for winter!

    I am going news light today. I have a project that has to get out the door by noon and I don’t want to get distracted. I saw the news about the nazi rally and it will NOT change a single MAGAt’s mind but maybe it will encourage people to take the time to vote. It was disheartening to see how many Puerto Rican voters in Florida voted for tRump in 2020 after he dissed Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. Maybe this latest insult will sway a few of them. Wouldn’t it be nice if Rick Snott lost his Senate seat because Puerto Rican voters – and really, any Latino voter – rejects the hateful rhetoric coming from the Orange Sh*tstain?

    See all y’all later!

  9. It’s 69 inside and out, heading for 87 outside. Sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 8 KWHs. The m-t-d is 301.7 and if we generate 8 again today we will have set a new record for life-of-system October production. With 3 more days in the month to go.

    I can’t find anything about drought here the few times I check the news but we are in a severe one. The tops of the buildings of the small towns drowned to create Beaver Lake are above water. Boat ramps are ending in dropoffs to rocks and dry dirt. Not even mud. And the Buffalo – the 1st designated “Wild River” by the U.S. Park Service – is dry and full of piles of dead fish where the last of the pools were before they too dried up. But no “conserve water” postings/announcements. The golf courses and the University are watering (overwatering) as usual. My son saw & told me about both the Buffalo situation & the continued watering. I guess we can’t endanger the profits of the Beaver Lake Water Authority. Our society is nuts. Suicidal as well as genocidal. Praying the rain we’re supposed to get Wednesday actually comes.

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good morning 50 and raining in Bellingham today. The rain has been heavy so flooding and mudslides are happening but so far our basement is dry. Our family weekend was a success, so I’m happy but very weary because hosting 14 people is a a lot of work! But the family now knows about all the history Ron’s mom had saved, memories were shared, and best of all family treasures went home with them. It was a moment to see Ryan happily wearing RonK’s old Harris tweed jackets though….we’re old and our clothes are vintage:) I need to go the lab this morning, and then the desk this afternoon. Best wishes to all.

  11. Good Monday evening, Moosekind! It’s 59 F. in Ashburn and twilight is nearly here.

    Wanted to stop by and say “Hi” before dinner and rehearsal. Had a busy day, a horrible night’s sleep last night, and a long, delightful lunch with Darling Niece. It’s a beautiful October day here but it’s heart-breaking to know that she and her family will be moving to California on November 20, and who knows when we’ll ever see each other again?

    Got to run. Hope everyone at the Pond has had a good day.

  12. Tuesday Meese. 39 here in Kingston. There are so many Puerto Rico support tweets that I am overwhelmed (elated)

    Just saw this:

  13. Good morning. Sneezing my head off, I’m putting off exercise till this afternoon and indoors. Checking out the wait times at early voting, and yeah they just opened and it’s the middle of the week, but there’s no wait anywhere. Anyway, happy Tuesday y’all.

  14. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 59 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 75. It is overcast now and the wind just kicked up but it will be sunny later.

    One week until election day. More than a few of us will wake up nervous. All we can do is vote, encourage others to vote and don’t help the bad guys spread rumors by repeating them, even if it is only to point out how awful they are. Everyone knows who is awful and we don’t want to help them promote their awfulness.

    There is nothing more ridiculous than a whiney multi-billionaire claiming he would never destroy his reputation by putting his billions above his hobby newspaper. Prove it – fire the garbage publisher who made a whole bunch of people cancel their subscriptions earlier in the year and sell the paper to someone with actual integrity, not the kind you imagine yourself to have because you are surrounded by lickspittles telling you how great you are.

    I have a project that needs to get out the door today, no ifs ands or buts. I think I have successfully pushed the other projects I am working on down the road and hope nothing new shows up today.

    See all y’all later!

  15. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It was ugly-cloudy and gloomy when we woke up, but now we’ve finished our porridge the sky has cleared and both daylight and sky are showing a dim blue. The weather has little to do with our breakfast, by the way. Right now the temperature in rainless Ashburn is 44 F. It’ll go up to 70 F. today.

    Last night’s rehearsal went fairly smoothly, although some of the actors STILL aren’t projecting, “Mama” forgot some of her Italian, and I woulda killed some of the elevator passengers if the doors were real. We oldsters don’t move out of the way quickly enough. I have to stand on tiptoe to talk into the standing mike inside the elevator, so the chief stagehand is going to lower it for me tonight.

    This morning: get hair done. At 1 o’clock I have a mammogram. Then nap, perhaps exercise, pick up dinner, and appear at Makeup at 6:40 to be checked. I’m doing my own, but I may not do enough. Tonight I’ll wear black trews, an orange sweater, and a little black Witch hat with feathers that I bought at Michael’s years ago. This outfit will be repeated at our first matinee on Thursday, on the day Muggles call “Halloween.” For the other performances, I’ll wear taupe trousers, an “I Love New York t-shirt” (because the play is set in NYC), a taupe jacket, and a green leather newsboy cap.

    But enough about that. Tomorrow is an empty-square-on-the-calendar day, except for rehearsal. Yay!

    I think the itchy red rash on my neck is caused by stress: election stress and play stress. When both are over, will it disappear? Stay tuned.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  16. It’s 70 heading for 83 and overcast. Yesterday we generated 8.9 KWHs and the m-t-d at 310 has set the new record for October electricity generation life of the system. A record that will be inched higher the next few days even if we really do get rain.

    Rocky night – sinusitis – late start, still groggy, moving slowly. And Freddie got out when I was taking out a litterbox and isn’t back yet. He hasn’t been outside for 6 weeks so he’s making the most of it. But it’s been over half an hour now so I hope he comes home soon. Meanwhile I’d best get to my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  17. Wednesday Meese. 52 here in Kingston going up to 76. Have a busy day ahead of me – have a filmed interview this morning at 11, and am doing a pod cast tonight (past my bedtime)

    Puerto Rico/Puerto Ricans
    Takedown of the disinformation on Puerto Rico

    • I saw a headline that tRump is claiming that he “did more for Puerto Rico than any other president in history.” I am sure that people will believe that without doing any research. Blast them for their ignorance.

  18. Good morning. Still sneezing my head off, there’s a front coming in that I bet brought some new pollen. Definitely going to kickboxing today, they’re doing an early Halloween thing. Anyway, happy Wednesday.
