Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: December 1st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. It’s 49 already heading for 60 and sunny at the moment. But there’s a bank of clouds to the north and west moving in so we’ll see how long that lasts. Yesterday we generated 6.1 KWHs and the m-t-d at 20 is still on track.

    Well, the best I can say about the outcome of our local runoff election is that both candidates are Dems. But our current mayor is solid union looking out for working people Dem. Our soon to be mayor is connected to the tourist industry. When Lioneld talks about low-cost housing he means housing. When Molly talks about low-cost housing she means lodging – like AirBnBs. Sort of the difference between though who protect the forest and those who cut down the forest for development then give all the streets tree names. Sigh.

    I’m achy and creaky and moving slowly. Obviously. I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  2. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 57 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 72. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I set an alarm to not miss the waxing crescent last night and I was rewarded! The prettiest little waxing crescent with the Evening Star over her right shoulder was in the WSW sky, framed by the fading sunset and the rooftops. I took a photo which of course did not do her justice and will upload it later if I have time.

    I think that being way too busy is actually a good thing as it give me less time to ponder how awful life is going to be for a large swath of Americans. I can’t help but think of the 36% of eligible voters who decided to stay home and let other people decide their future. If only a small number of those had chosen to vote, tRump would not have his “mandate” (from about the 33% of Americans who voted for him versus the 32% who voted for Kamala) to destroy our democracy and set the world on fire.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good morning, 33 and very foggy outside my windows today. If we stay to plan we’ll get a tree today. I want to spray it well so dust, fungus spores, and spiders stay outside so it will dry in the garage for a few days. I’ve been slow, but the Christmas Spode is finally in place so ’tis the season is underway.

    My PT session went well but I will really miss checking in with him. I’m a bit nervous re being on my own but he has taught me how to cope with the reality I’m living with so I hope I can stay with the plan. Using the walker as much as I can is key, but I also need to do the daily exercises, and to be wise re how much I do everyday.

    Best wishes to all.

  4. Thursday Meese. Looks like we got about 4 inches of snow last night. Have to put my boots on to go out and clean off the car and driveway. :(

  5. Puerto Rico

    “they are stealing them”

    Don’t forget this:

  6. Good morning. Did my walk/run, 1.2 of the 1.5 was running. In the office, but I’m leaving early to pick up the t-shirt I got for the Trail of Lights. Happy Friday Eve to all.

  7. It’s 30, wind chill 20, heading for 38, and sunny at the moment. We generate 6.88 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 27.1 is still on track for 180.

    I’m cold, stiff, creaky, and slow today. Oh well. But I saw the moon last night, beautiful crescent with a bright star (or planet) about a hand span above her. And I got a little better sleep. Meanwhile, I’d best be about my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybod. {{{Meeses}}}

  8. Good Thursday morning, Meese! After a much-too-busy day yesterday, I’m enjoying a delightful “empty square on the calendar” day (not that I haven’t a lot to do).

    We had a cheap thrill this morning about 7:15 when rain mixed with snow fell for a whole three minutes. Now the sky is clearing and it’s very windy. Right now it’s 34 F. on its way up to 42 f. I wonder whether they still plan to hold the Christmas tree lighting on Great Oak Common at 5 p.m. There’s supposed to be hot cocoa and Santa Claus too.

    Yesterday I voted for three people for the Resident Advisory Council, then hotfooted it over to the Current Events discussion in another building. Unfortunately someone had used a HORRIBLE cleaning agent in that room, so the whole time I thought I’d pass out. I’ve been to meetings in that room before and it didn’t smell like that. The guy who parks next to us in the underground garage runs the meetings. He runs very tight ship and I was happy to see him politely but firmly shut up the Droners. I don’t know whether I’ll go again: I’m probably too uncivilized. To me, the president-elect isn’t the president-elect, he’s the illegitimate offspring of a diseased camel. Also, of the topics chosen for discussion, NOT ONE concerned women! Bleargh! I’ll go to the “Woman to Woman” discussion on the third Tuesday and see whether it’s any better.

    The calendar is filling up with activities. I don’t have time to do postcards, I’ll be too busy with my writers. Still have to find a ritual, write my Yule newsletter to the far-flung family, and so forth. With the skies being so clear now, perhaps I’ll catch a glimpse of Herself this evening!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Moose Pond.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 55 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 72. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I saw the pretty waxing crescent again last night – she was a bit thicker and more to the S in the WSW.

    I am certainly not an advocate of violence but I wonder if the shocking murder of the CEO of a health insurance company might not be a wake up call to any of those billionaires who are not complete sociopaths about just how how angry, frustrated and depressed people are by the state of the health care system in our country. Fancy CEOs meeting in penthouse suites over cocktails and lobster are sheltered from the day to day anxiety and distress that anyone having to navigate the health care and health insurance system are suffering. Maybe they should pay more attention and not be such terrible people.

    I finished a few things yesterday, got one big project done this morning and now I am going to sit and put my feet up.

    See all y’all later!

  10. Good morning. Wow, it’s cold. Okay, where most of y’all are, 44 isn’t “wow” weather, but that’s 15 degrees colder than yesterday morning. I started to run, my lungs said “what the heck?”, so I walked instead. Anyway, tfg’s cabinet and advisor picks continue to be awful, not that any better is to be expected. Trying to find a way to pay attention to the news without getting utterly depressed.

  11. Brrrr Meese. 26 here in Kingston, going up to 30. Happy that my snow got shoveled/blown by the next door neighbor – more to come later in the week.

    Puerto Rico

    (Thomas Rivera Schatz – President of PR Senate, member of the “Progressive” (not) Party (PNP), Republican )

    “Tomás Rivera Schatz published his “hit list”, which includes the people with whom he has had differences. Does this represent a danger for Puerto Rico? Should Governor Jenniffer González intervene and call attention to her controversial statements?”

  12. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 45 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 68. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. The cooler temperatures from the rest of the continental United States are reaching here but certainly not the bitter colds. This time of year I am reminded of why I chose to live here – winter in the upper Midwest is not for oldsters like me.

    A lot of people are hoping that the insurance CEO’s murder was retribution for his company’s policies literally killing people but from what I have read, it could just as easily be an international gang that UHC was dealing with over a ransomware issue. I did laugh out loud when an 85 year old woman who had complained about UHC’s Medicare Advantage policies that caused her to go into debt was contacted by a journalist and the first thing she said was “It wasn’t me!!” If nothing else, the murder has unleashed a lot of pent up fury about how awful the United States health care system and health insurance system is – in a just world, the people in charge would reassess their policies and placate the masses. In MAGAt world, they will just arm their CEOs and build impenetrable compounds where they can count their billions without the rabble bothering them.

    I am working this morning on organizing some notes for next week so that I can have a useful to-do list for weekend projects. I ran my first pass of 2024 taxes so that I can plan for tax related transactions that will need to happen by 12/31/2024 so at least there won’t be any big surprises. Next on my list is to identify client projects that need to be completed by 12/31/2024 and which ones can be pushed to next year. I have errands to run later this morning, so I best put my nose back to the grindstone and wrap things up.

    See all y’all later!

  13. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s clear and frosty at 29 F., although the wind won’t be as bad today. Our high will be 39 F. Yesterday afternoon, coming back from the gym, I saw a thin crescent slice of Herself in the twilight sky. I bowed, as I always do. Made me feel so much better to see Her!

    The Christmas event was moved to Farmwell Hall and was very nice. Carol singers dressed in Victorian costume sang a great selection of carols, including “Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella,” and others. The hot chocolate with whipped cream was tasty, and there were sugar cookies, which I took home. I was glad I went, because I saw a couple of people I really needed to see, including B. We talked about the ritual, which I’ve still to create.

    I gotta run, run, run: to Navy Fed to get some cash, to Trader Joe’s to get eggs for Sunday breakfast, wine for hubby, and something else. Then I have a lunch meeting with a friend who wants me to write a monologue for her. It’ll have to be after Christmas because I am SWAMPED! All this keeps me from brooding about the Long Dark Night that’s coming. Hope I can think of some subversive acts that won’t get me arrested.

    Wishing a good day to everyone at the Pond! Oh, BTW, I frantically texted Darling Niece in California—she said the tsunami and earthquake were nowhere near them in Burbank. It was happening in Northern California. Pretty scary!

  14. It was 20 at dawn, 27 now, heading for 49, and sunny. Yesterday we generated 7.3 KWHs and the m-t-d at 34.5 is on track for 180 with room to spare. (Which is good because we’re supposed to get clouds and maybe rain Sunday.)

    It’s getting harder and harder to get out of my warm bed – and I’m creakier and creakier when I do. But cats have to be fed, litterboxes be dealt with, and boosting to do. I’ve done the former and the cats are sleeping. Just finished my own oatmeal and am about to start boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  15. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 45 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 68. Sunny skies are in the forecast. There was some precipitation yesterday, a drop or two. We will probably see snow on the mountaintops soon.

    I am going to clear my brain of politics and focus on personal accounting. I need to get caught up on bank reconciliations. I keep track of balances via the online system but I am too old fashioned to give up paper check registers so I am behind on manual posting. I will feel better about 12/31/2024 if I can get the stacks of paid bills cleared away and into the shred bag.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Saturday Meese. Still cold here but no snow on the horizon. Prepping for Caribbean Matters – and will spend the afternoon watching women’s basketball. Am enjoying our home boycott of MSNBC.

    • Cable weather and sports. Volleyball tournament, lots of basketball, Women’s College Hockey.

  17. Good morning. A chilly one. Though I’m glad for the rain, I hope it lets up some before I head for the park at 9. We’re supposed to get temperatures in the 30s on Thursday, not a freeze, but the coldest we’ve had yet. So this afternoon, I’ll take my plants that are on shelves & stands down and bunch them together so they’ll be warmer — and ready for when it does freeze & I need to cover them. Anyway, busy day ahead, hope everyone has a good one.

  18. It’s 48 heading for 60 and sunny. Yesterday we generated 7.3 KWHs and the m-t-d at 41 is actually on track for 200. But it won’t be for long. Definitely clouds and maybe rain moving in overnight.

    When I lit the fire yesterday I turned off the furnace – didn’t want it coming on before the fire got going and suck all the smoke into the house – and forgot to turn it back on again. I don’t know what the temp was when I woke up cold just before dawn and turned it on again. I didn’t turn on a light to see. But it certainly wasn’t the 64 I keep the thermostat set at! Anyway, I’m creakier – and slower – that even my usual winter condition. Sigh. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  19. Good Saturday morning, Meese! It’s 32 F. and clearing in jolly cold Ashburn. We’ll get up to perhaps 45 F. today. I saw the blessed quarter-moon last night as I walked home through the buildings from the gym. It was in the twilight sky. Cheered me up so much!

    Today is the anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, not that anyone has noticed. I remember because my late father, who enlisted after it happened, used to sing, “Re-mem-ber Pearl Har-BOR!”

    Well, I’ve officially done it! I’ve driven myself crazy. WHO bought a whole bunch of cute Christmas stamps at the post office in the old neighborhood last month? And WHO isolated a whole bunch of cute Christmas-themed address labels and put them with the stamps in such a safe place that now I can’t find them? Duh.
    Naturally I’ve torn the apartment apart looking for them. Haven’t found them yet. This means I gotta trudge to the Post Awful on Tuesday afternoon to buy more stamps, etc. Why do I do this to myself?

    Then, the news advised us to download encryption apps for our texts because the Chinese are reading them. Huh? Howinell do we do that?

    The Winter Solstice ritual is two weeks from todaY! I’m beginning to get an idea of how to shape it. Will focus on the Divine Feminine. The theme will be “Let’s do the opposite of everything the incoming administration is going to do.” Where there’s cruelty, let us be kind. Let’s offer seeds to the starving birds in the winter. Let’s do something nice for trees and donate bigly to the food banks. If the French could resist the Nazis in WWII, so can we.

    Also need to start my Yule newsletter today. A few good things have happened this year but some awful ones have happened as well. I guess I’ll start with the good news.

    I’ve rattled on long enough! I’m still in my dressing gown and slippers. Dearly has awakened from his after-breakfast nap, which means that I can use our noisy microwave and washing machine. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
