Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: December 15th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 48 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 70. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 18 degrees here in Kingston NY.

    I’ll be celebrating “El Maestro” Eddie Palmieri’s 88th birthday today in Black Music Sunday

  3. Good morning. Still dealing with allergies/cold/whatever. I don’t think I’m going to church, just too much coughing & sneezing. The music diary last night went well, lots of posts of songs about friends. It is really warm here — got up to 80 yesterday, though that’s not even a record for us. Anyway, happy Sunday to all, have a good one!

  4. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s 34 F. on a cloudy morning, with rain expected tonight. Our high will be 36 F. The weather gadget is predicting rain and even snow in an hour. What rubbish!

    Sigh. A friend promised to help with the Winter Solstice ritual on Saturday but now says she’ll have to leave before the Cakes and Ale portion. I need a crockpot and someone to buy the cider. If no one steps up to supply those, we’ll have to drink cold cider on an afternoon that promises to be 30 F.

    Anyway, as I was walking to the concert on Friday night, I saw Her dazzling Self! Yesterday was gloriously clear, so I reveled in the sight of Her on my evening walk, knowing it would be cloudy today. This last full moon of the year is called The Cold Moon.

    We are meeting some friends this afternoon for dinner at the restaurant around the corner from us. Poor Dearly is embarrassed to be seen in public with his skin problem, but plenty of people around here appear with masks or gauze taped to parts of their faces.

    Yesterday I had to choose the music for the ritual, go to the gym, and get the mailings ready. Tomorrow I MUST get to a post office to mail them. Everyone is going to receive my proudest accomplishment of the year, the book produced by my writers’ group.

    Today, I have to finish writing the ritual, finish writing the newsletter to the family, and so on and so on. No wonder I’m exhausted. There’s too much to do.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  5. It’s 48 heading for 63 and wonderfully clear. I saw the moon multiple times from over the evening and this morning and a few more in the middle of the night. Very unusual for me and a blessing indeed. It didn’t clear off yesterday until after lunch but we did manage to generate 4.1 KWHs. The m-t-d at 79 isn’t on track but at least didn’t lose as much ground yesterday. And if it stays clear we may gain a little back today.

    My adblock stopped working yesterday morning but basket, bless him, took a break from whatever he’s doing in Denver yesterday evening to remote in and upgrade it. So nice to not have my music interrupted with jarring ads.

    The family will be here for the Yule gathering this evening. Target time is 6 pm. One or more of my grandsons may show up earlier. Odds are good everybody else will show up later. I’ve got my usual Sunday cleaning done but I’ll need to do a few extras before they get here. And take my shower/wash my hair. I normally do that in the evening before bedtime but heaven only knows when my bedtime will be tonight. LOL. Off to do my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Good morning, 44 and cloudy in Bellingham today. We enjoyed Ava’s Christmas dance performance yesterday, followed by tea and treats here after. Today will be busy too with a family tree decorating time and then dinner. Watching Ava dance yesterday was very moving…..she started at the school at about age 3 and now as a graduating senior this is her last year. She had a featured dance so it was lovely to see and I did shed a tear. Best wishes to all.

  7. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! Happy to report that it rained all night long, according to Dearly, who had another of his Awful Nights. The rain started about tea time yesterday. Right now in Ashburn it’s 37 F. and more rain is expected tonight. It’s grey and gloomy outside but I don’t care: suits my mood.

    I’m finding myself seriously displeased this morning because I’m getting NO help from the three people I asked to help me with the ritual. If this situation continues, this will be the last winter solstice ritual. I can’t do everything myself! Looks as if we’ll have cold sparkling cider and possibly gingerbread men, instead of hot cider in a crockpot and homemade gingerbread women. Oh, these first-world problems!

    Anyway, I smell COFFEE and it’s time for breakfast! I want to get my local Christmas cards ready to send off and make my way to a post office. If I have to drive to my old post office, miles away, I’ll do it. It’s too expensive to send things by UPS.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, and wishing something good would happen to get me out of this grumpy mood.

    • The orange pustule and “destroyer of all we know and love” plans to privatize the Post Office. Of course it will hurt rural MAGAts more than anyone else but that will never deter them from voting for a Republican.

    “For the first time, a party proposing that Puerto Rico become an independent nation came in second. The Puerto Rican Independence Party went from fourth place in the 2020 election to being the second favorite option [in 2024].”

  9. Good morning. Called in sick to work, still sneezing my head off. I will try to get some exercise later, if heavy breathing doesn’t set off more coughing & sneezing. Hoping for maybe one good news story today, just one good thing.

  10. It’s 57 heading for 63, overcast enough the PV system isn’t on, and drizzling. It’s been off and on raining since sometime after midnight but not much actual water. Only .3″ – so far anyway. Yesterday we managed to generate 5.99 KWHs before the clouds moved in. So basically we didn’t gain any ground with the m-t-d at 84.5 but we didn’t lose any either.

    Yesterday’s Yule gathering was lovely. The den windows and wreath in the den are decorated and this year the front window is too. With lights even so it can be seen from the street. It’s hard to believe these gatherers are only about 3 hours once a year. I’m glad I started the tradition of “decorate at Grandma’s” when Josh was 5, Storm was 2, and Valen and Sky hadn’t been born yet. (Josh is now 27 & Storm 24. Valen and Sky have different mothers – Valen’s 21 and Sky will be next Monday.) The boys love it as much as I do. After not doing it in ’20 & ’21 they are the ones who asked if we could start it again in ’22 if we could figure out a safe way to do it. So now it’s memories. Until next year. And I have about half the leftovers – ham, roasted winter veggies, cranberry cheesecake, pumpkin pie, cranberry-orange creamcheese spread, plus the GF crackers and corn chips from the open packages that were in the serving bowls when everybody packed up to go. With the addition of veggies I have around the house, that will last me at least until next week.

    Meanwhile, I got up late – the evening was lovely, the night not so much – and had best get to my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 64 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 73. Sunny skies are in the forecast. We saw the moon all last night but she was not visible to me this morning. She has been magnificent throughout this full moon phase.

    I saw a little hope in the headlines this morning, including that there might be some Republican Senators unwilling to confirm all of tRump’s cabinet picks. The stupidest man in the Senate, Tommy Tuberville, who voted against 15 of Biden’s cabinet picks, said that Democrats should join with Republicans to give tRump the cabinet he wants. I hope our Senators laugh in his face.

    I saw this last night on BlueSky:

    Trump is poised to inspire a major thermostatic backlash, midterms are now more favorable to D coalition, and Trump becoming a lame duck will soon inspire chaotic jockeying to replace him. The question is whether anyone is as savvy as McConnell in 2009.

    I am not sure who it will be but the same commenter also pointed out that Democrats seem unable to process what they need to do:

    There is so much collective action failure right now: billionaire licking Trump’s boots, some Ds trying to look “reasonable,” others focused on intra-party factional goals, media quiescent and trying not to be persecuted. Shocking how pliable everyone is compared to December 2016.

    I hope they figure it out soon – we need some leaders with a plan.

    I have a busy morning trying to prep for the year end hard deadlines. My new printer came but I am not going to be able to set it up until I get a few other projects out the door.

    See all y’all later!

  12. Good morning. I managed a walk/run, just over 30 minutes. Not bad for recovering from a cold/allergies or whatever this was. Getting ready to log in to work, watching local news. It is warm enough here that I’m running the a/c.

  13. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 48 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 75. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I have been seeing the moon at night but she is no longer visible from my vantage point during the morning.

    Sad shooting story out of Madison Wisconsin. I drove past that school fairly often as Buckeye Road was a secret back way from where I lived to Stoughton Road which was where health care services I used were. I am not anxious to find out what hell a 15 year old girl may have been going through to decide to shoot a bunch of people and then end her own life. There is a rumor that there is a manifesto. That age is an age fraught with all sorts of emotional “disasters” probably made worse because of social media. :(

    I got my new printer set up – I could not wait until I actually had spare time! It is about 30 pounds lighter than the one it replaces (which I have to figure out how to get down a flight of stairs into my vehicle to dispose of it) and quite a bit smarter. It definitely is more cheaply built so I will have to be more careful with the lighter plastic drawers, trays and scanning feeder. The software setup was challenging on one of my computers and I had to “sleep on it.” This morning I woke up with a plan and solved all the issues. NOW, I have to do what I was supposed to do this morning so that I can get back on track for December and end of calendar year work.

    See all y’all later!

  14. It’s 46 heading for 61 and sunny but the clouds are already moving in. Yesterday we generated 4.77 KWHs and the m-t-d at 89.7 is definitely still losing ground. It’s possible still to make the 180 goal but it would take a whole lot more sunny days than we’re predicted to get. Sigh.

    It cleared off after dark yesterday and I saw the moon both last night and this morning. Which is nice. At least one good thing. Last night she was still fully enough to not be noticeably waning but by this morning it was obvious that she’s on her way to the “darks”. Which I guess is appropriate for the end of year as well as month.

    Working my way through the festive leftovers and enjoying the holiday lights in the evening. Celebrating Yule on the 15th puts me a lot further out from Epiphany/3 Kings Day though. LOL. Anyway, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Light for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
