Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: January 5th, 2025

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good Saturday morning, Meese! Our 1.8 inches of snow overnight has left the woods looking as if someone had sifted powdered sugar over them. The sky is a soft blue with bits of cirrus cloud here and there: if it’s still clear this evening I shall make a point of going out to look for the moon. She will be full on Monday.

    Yesterday I read some more of the Jefferson biography. I feel quite exhausted. Honestly, trying to keep track of who fathered whom is really confusing! Wikipedia reports that Fawn Brodie fell in love with this extremely complex man while she was writing the book. After she finished the biography, Mr. Brodie remarked, “I’m glad that man is out of the house!”

    Yet we haven’t made much progress in 200 years, have we? White men still hate and fear women, especially brilliant, accomplished black women. Well, the American people have chosen, and those that voted for Thing deserve whatever happens to them. Y’all should probably stock up on cleaning wipes, paper towels, bathroom tissue, and coffee beans. We have enough teabags in this house to outfit a tea party of 1,000 persons. Many of them were given to me by friends who wanted to be rid of the dam’ things.

    On the agenda today are the gym, looking up “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “I Got Rhythm” on YouTube, and LAUNDRY. If I let it go another day it’s going to escape its hamper and start crawling toward the living room…

    OK, enough of my nonsense. Y’all play naicely, y’hear? Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Sadly, the people who didn’t vote for Thing don’t deserve any of the awfulness about to descend on them. I will never forgive or forget the people who did not vote at all, who deserve our scorn for eternity. If the people who voted for Joe Biden in 2020 and who stayed home on voting day in 2024 had voted this year, we would be inaugurating President Kamala Harris in 9 days. :(

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 34 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 59. Sunny skies are in the forecast. This morning I saw the 93.2% illumination waxing moon in the NW sky – she was visible from my office window and was casting her moonglow on the greenspace behind our unit. Yesterday, I saw her in the bright blue NE sky while running errands, we can’t see her from the deck when she is there. I have been using the waxing moon for energy to complete some projects. She will be full on Monday at 3:26pm MST and waning as we head into our protected spaces for the next 4 years. Goddess help us all.

    See all y’all later!

  3. It’s 27 heading for 44 and sunny. Maybe, if we’re lucky, some of that 5″ of snow will melt off the PV panels and we’ll generate some electricity. We didn’t yesterday and I’m not really expecting to today. We shall see.

    It was cloudy at bedtime so I didn’t see the moon last night. Cleared oof but I didn’t see the moon when I got up even though it was early enough for her to still have been out so I guess I wasn’t looking in the right part of the sky. It’s a blessing to know she’s there. Whether I see her or not.

    The weather delayed shipment on the oven ignitor and it didn’t arrive yesterday. My son says the currently delivery date is Monday. Oh well. I’ve got the cooktop and the toaster oven. I’ll manage. Meanwhile, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  4. Good afternoon, 43 and cloudy in Bellingham today. The cold I’ve had all week is lingering so I’m slower than slow. Oh well, the basics are done and the rest can wait. Fortunately I’ve got lots of mindless laundry to keep me occupied. Best wishes to all.
