Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: January 26th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  3. Good morning. Yesterday I did kickboking then to the park and ran a mile & a half. I was hoping for more but it was colder than I expected and my lungs just said “no”. Tea is steeping, there’s lovely rain — we’re in extreme drought — and I will make next week’s lunch this afternoon.

  4. It’s 37 heading for 44 and overcast. We may but probably won’t get rain this afternoon. Yesterday we generated 9.1 KWHs and the m-t-d at 168.3 is definitely on track for something good. Even if today isn’t.

    Lousy night. Sinusitis. Didn’t actually get to sleep until after 2 am and thus am slow and groggy today. I did manage to get my vacuuming done. And now I’d best get to my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good morning, 27 and light clouds outside my window today. I’m still heavily congested but the meds are allowing me to breathe. One more day of cortisone and then I should feel less shaky, just hope I keep getting better. Activity triggers coughing so I can’t do much but I am making slow progress with getting the house back in order. I hope to get the Christmas Spode back into it’s cupboard today. I really want to bring early spring to the porches but that will have to wait. Best wishes to all.

  6. Good morning. It is less cold, so I did my walk/run. The running part was 1.4 mi over 32 minutes. I see California is getting rain, hope it’s enough to help with the fires but not so much to make landslides. So tfg tfg’d over the weekend, got people scared about a trade war. It’s going to be a long 4 years.

    • Apparently, Colombia blinked in the face of TheDump’s promised tariffs. There is not going to be a place for people of principal to take a stand against him and his plans to fashion a new world order, one where he is in charge and people just hand over their land and rename their bodies of water and essentially subsume their national identities. I just checked and my coffee is an Arabica blend and it is possible that it comes from Colombia so in one way I am glad that the tariffs were cancelled but sad that we are all going to live this way for the next 4 years, wondering which of our essential products will suddenly become unavailable or double in price. :(

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 43 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 59. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. We are expecting much needed rain tomorrow and Wednesday – I hope we get it. I am going to see if I can spot the waning crescent moon in about 30 minutes; the moonrise is supposed to be at 6:11am in the ESE skies but it takes about 30-40 minutes to clear the mountains so it might rise when the skies are lightening with the dawn. She is at about 5% illumination and will be new on January 29th at 5:35am MST.

    The Air Force claims that it has reinstated videos on the Tuskegee Airmen and women pilots but I won’t believe it – and let them off the hook – until there is proof, and that they don’t turn around and do it again once the bright hot light of public outcry is on them. It is difficult to believe that it has been less than a week and that already so much damage has been done to institutions, lives, and people’s futures. I hope that the courts step in soon and block more of TheDump’s Executive Orders. Apparently even Lindsey Graham and Tom Freaking Cotton think that TheDump cancelling security details for people targeted for retaliation by Iran, John Bolton and Mike Pompeo, is too much. Good luck, boys! You’re probably next.

    Busy week ahead with some deadlines as the last week of January looms.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. Yesterday I was busy all day with meal prep, looking after my grandson (luckily, at age 10 he doesn’t need much attention), and then watching the bitherly dithappointing Commies game. Still, it was an honor simply to get to the playoffs, an event that had not happened in 33 years.

    Went to bed early. Bfitz, wonder whether there was a disturbance in The Force on Saturday night? I took my pill and dutifully retired but could not get to sleep to save my life. Finally, at 15 minutes after midnight, I turned my Kindle back on and read until 1 a.m. Consequently I kept falling asleep between chores.

    Today Dearly and I need to get haircuts and pop by the store to get milk, etc. I made yesterday’s apple crumble a new way because I was feeling lazy, and, ah, it wasn’t as good as the regular way. Pooh.

    No rehearsal for my character of Irene tonight, but I need to study the script. I also need to work on the script for “Varina.” That’s a monologue my friend wants me to write.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, and OmiGoddessIhopehewillnotdoanythingawful
    today.

  9. It’s 30 heading for 50 and sunny. Yesterday was cloudy all day and we only got 3.3 KWHs but we’d already gained so much ground that the m-t-d is 171 and should easily reach 180 by end of day with this sunshine. And 4 more days left in the month.

    Got better sleep last night/this morning so I’m not as groggy. Focusing on home, family, and my boosting. There’s always evil in the world but evil is currently in charge. Nothing new to Black & Indigenous folks. Hopefully they – and enough allies because they’re too outnumbered to do it by themselves – can do enough damage control so everybody survives. (Not pushing the burden onto them, just saying they are always fighting this evil so they’re already in the trenches. Where their “allies” should already be but mostly aren’t – which is why evil is currently in charge.) I saw a rat at the bird feeding station yesterday. First time in 27 years of living here that I’ve seen one. If I see another, and this one wasn’t just passing through, I’ll have to do something. Set traps or whatever else I can think of. I don’t want to put poison out there. That’s the bird feeding station.

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good morning, 26 and mostly sunny outside my windows today. I can breathe better this morning so I hope that means healing is happening. It’s the last day of cortisone meds so I guess I’ll know soon. Reading around the news tells me to get lost in a book today and let the national situation sort itself out. Being basically informed is important but I need to be protective re my mental health so I’ll try to stay partially aware. Best wishes to all.

    • I am glad in some ways that TheDump is showing his hand and getting all these terrible things done in his first week. We can watch the waning moon suck the last bit of that – beginning with the grossness of the inauguration, the confirmation of Pete Hogsbreath and the Stephen Miller directives which are setting the foundation for a Christian White Nationalist Nation – into the darkness and giving We The People a chance to reset. Organizations and blue states are stepping up to challenge many of these things in the courts and we are challenging them in the court of public opinion. We need to believe, as the founders of our democracy declared, that a government cannot sustain itself without the consent of the governed and that if enough people call bullsh*t on the MAGAts and their plans, those plans will collapse of their own weight. I just hope it happens soon enough to save the lives and livelihoods of the millions in the crosshairs of the fascists.

  11. Good morning. Slept in, today’s exercise will just be kickboxing because my achilles is irritated. Got plenty of work to do; should be able to avoid listening to the news — I just can’t take hearing more about tfg.

  12. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! Way-yull, as my Beloved Aunt used to begin her remarks, it’s going to be 41 F. today and windy. We have pale sunshine and a lot of clouds in Ashburn this morning.

    Now that the Imbolc ritual is back on, I have to write the script, choose the music, and decide what to put on the altar. For Cakes and Ale, we’re having gingerale, as neither of us has time to make hot chocolate or eggnog, and shortbread. That’s not eggy, but the UUs won’t know the difference. (Sometimes ignorance is helpful.) We’ll have to hold the ritual in the screened porch because They say it’s going to R-A-I-N.

    There’s always so much to do, and I have three appointments today, so I’d better get on with things. There will be a new moon tomorrow, and today the sun will set at 5:25 p.m.! How ’bout that?

    NOW the Rethugs want to name Dulles Airport “Trump Airport”! Pardon me while I utter a SCREE-am! Bloody hail! It’s bad enough that they renamed Washington National Airport Ronnie Ray-Gun Airport, don’t let them do this too.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. Try not to listen to the news, you’ll only get depressed.

  13. It’s 40 heading for 59 and sunny. In February. Oh well. Yesterday we generated 10 KWHs and the m-t-d at 181 had met my “reasonable” goal and is gaining on the 200 goal. May or may not make that as clouds are supposed move in tomorrow. It’s barely but definitely not likely possible to reach the 226.3 necessary to get in 2nd place but 2025 has already gained 3rd.

    It’s funny in a bitter way to see the Rs scurrying around naming things after Twitler in the hopes that he won’t cut their funding or deport them & their kids to some country they’ve never been in their lives. Not that I’m following any of that but some stuff shows up in my TLs, will-I-or-nill-I. I know some folks who’re stocking up food & paper products against the coming shortages. We shall see what we shall see, as always.

    Meanwhile I have boosting to do. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  14. Reports of ICE harassing even indigenous people are an extra layer of disturbing that I didn't forsee. But here's what should happen! Please share #laloalcaraz cartoons

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 46 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 55. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast with rain expected around 4pm. The mountains definitely are clouded over and the humidity is much higher than it has been. Tomorrow we are expecting rain all day. Hurrah!

    I feel badly for the career DOJ prosecutors and FBI agents who were part of the investigation into the January 6th attempted coup and now have lost their jobs. We can’t sustain a democracy if the rule of law is tossed out when Republicans take over and then reinstated when Democrats take over. It happened in 2001 when George W. Bush took over and purged the DOJ, President Obama cleaned it up when he took office in 2009, tRump 1.0 trashed it in 2027 and then President Biden did as much as he could to clean it up but then ran out of time. Now whoever takes over in 2028, goddess please let it be the Democrats, will have to try to fix what’s left of it. At some point it will break permanently and that will be the end of it.

    I got some client project work organized this morning and have been trying to get an accounting project out the door before the calendar flips. I think I just need another hour so I am going to push through my lack of enthusiasm and get it finished. I need to take my walk while the sun is still shining.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 35 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 48. Partly cloudy skies and rain are in the forecast. We had rain yesterday and the creosote smell was wonderful, I missed it and its healing powers! When I went to look for the exact name for the smell after desert rain, I found this:

    “The smell of desert rain is a combination of plant oils, volatile organic compounds, and geosmin. The term for this scent is petrichor, which comes from the Greek words petra (stone) and ikhṓr (the fluid of the gods).”

    I had never heard it called petrichor. I prefer creosote as it is attached to an actual plant the I can see and touch – and smell!

    The moon went dark earlier this morning and has already started waxing. I dumped all the flaming dumpster’s bs into the darkness and I am looking forward to the light. The Trump Show 2.0 is wearing thin and a lot of people are sick of the lawlessness. Some of them may have noticed that the price of eggs did not go down but they will surely notice that tRump just shut down the school lunch program and it is only because of an emergency court stay that it was turned back on. I was aghast at the depth and breadth of the government “pause” on payments but horrified that there appears to be one place where someone can enter a code and shut down payments to everyone. I am sure, after seeing yesterday’s Medicaid clusterfk, that if it had happened on a Tuesday before a Social Security Wednesday (2nd 3rd or 4th Wednesday) that it would have shut down automatic direct deposits to Social Security recipients. Their hatefulness and cruelty is only exceeded by their gross incompetence. The “pause” litigation will go to SCOTUS. Goddess help us if they side with the destroyers of democracy again.

    I have a couple of projects that need my attention. I got the biggest time sensitive project delivered yesterday and I have a couple of smaller ones that really should get done before Friday on my desk right now.

    See all y’all later!

  17. Good morning. Achilles is still iffy, so another non-running day. Working, it’s supposed to rain later and that will be nice. Glad to see the buyout is a fiasco.

  18. It’s 46 heading for 63 and overcast. We may or may not – probably not – get rain this evening. Yesterday we generated 9.9 KWHs and the m-t-d at 191.5 has “3rd place” locked down. Hoping we’ll make it over 200 but that will depend on just how cloudy these last 3 days of the month turn out to be.

    Bad times for everyone except the wealthy Evil Ones. The stupid Evil Ones who put them into positions of “power” are finding out that they actually are not exempt from that evil. It’s not just reserved for anyone not white Xtian and male. But as usual, it will/does do the most harm to those are are not white, Xtian, and male. All I can do is what I always have done in bat times. Routine, news light, do the little bits possible in the gap between “totally powerless” and “mostly powerless”.

    I may or may not go to the library today. I haven’t been in over 5 years but I need to replace my library card just in case I want to use the Library services. Meanwhile, off to my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
