Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.
Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?
…
NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

Good afternoon, 25 and frosty outside my windows today. I am officially done with being sick but unfortunately my body hasn’t gotten the message. I’m still really congested but I can breathe without the meds so that’s progress. No taste or smell today but no apatite either so it doesn’t matter. RonK and our son are feeling much better and that brings feelings of relief and hope. Best wishes to all.
Good Wednesday afternoon, Moosekind! It’s been flawlessly beautiful today, blue-skied and sunny and 55 F.! If it hadn’t been for the high wind, it would have felt warm! Tonight is the new moon, of course.
This day has run away from me. I did spend some time listening to Enya’s “The Celts” for the Imbolc ritual on Saturday. I’d forgotten how much I like that album! That reminds me, I MUST write to the reservations lady and ask her to have the fire lit in the bar area Saturday afternoon. You can see the fire from the screened porch behind the bar area. I sent the playlist to B., who understands how to download music from Spotify onto a device. She wrote back that she’s done it.
Went to the gym, didn’t max out on the treadmill, but did manage a pretty good workout. What else…in a little while I’ll go Wait Forever to get our carryout dinner.
Must study the script for the musical tonight, and finalize the script for Imbolc. The latter won’t be that hard, and while the others have their eyes closed during the meditation, I’ll read from my cheat sheet—ha!
Hope all at the Pond are having a good day.
Thursday Meese. 21 here in Kingston. Snow predicted for tomorrow.
Puerto Rico, Puerto Ricans and ICE
We are here to defend the UPR. Without the UPR there is no Puerto Rico. And tomorrow at 4 pm in front of the Federal Building we will march in defense of the immigrant community and against ICE raids. Don’t miss it.
Good morning. We’re getting rain here — not drought-busting but any rain will do. I walked inside the parking garage, just walked since the pavement was slick. It is weirdly warm — 65 degrees! Back to normal tomorrow, but weird morning for January.
Good Thursday morning, Meese! Well, it’s not a good morning at all in the DMV (District-Maryland-Virginia, in case y’all forgot). The current temp. in Ashburn is 37 F., going up to 49 F. That’s a far cry from yesterday’s windy but warmer 57 F.
A Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines jet that was returning from Kansas over the icy Potomac River last night. All three soldiers and all 64 souls aboard the plane, including four crew, died in the crash. One doesn’t really think of airline disasters happening in this country, nowadays. Those poor people!
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I woke up with enough mojo to make blueberry muffins for ourselves and the neighbors. One of them never gets up until 9:30, so I’ll take hers down the hall when I’ve finished my coffee.
There’s a book that’s going viral on the Internet, about how to commit sabotage against fascists. Written by Wild Bill Donovan for saboteurs to use against the Nazis, it’s now free on Project Gutenberg. If I were better at links, I’d provide the link.
I’m so furious over this latest prank of Poopy-Pants against the immigrants that now I want to learn Spanish and speak it quite audibly in public places. “Sorry” just doesn’t cut it.
Gubernator Dumbkin, he who has the face like a soft, doughy doughnut, said Virginians ought to be glad about Poopy’s edicts, because after all we voted for it. Uh, Gubernator, if you could read, you’d know that Virginia went for Kamala by 6 points last November. For all these federal workers to lose their jobs would be a DISASTER of major proportions for Virginia’s economy.
That’s enough from me this morning. Remember that a whole bunch of planets are in alignment this month! Someone took a photo of them over the Sydney Opera House and posted it to BlueSky or Twitter, can’t remember which. Most impressive!
Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
Weighed a pound more this morning than I did yesterday morning and it’s my own fault. I have a fondness for chocolate. We received a lot of it for Christmas, so I feel it is very meet, right, and my bounden duty to help eat it up.
It’s 55 heading for 59, overcast and drizzling. Yesterday we generated 7.1 KWHs, which we probably are not going to do today, but the m-t-d at 198.4 is close enough to 200 that we’ll probably make it. And still have tomorrow to generate a little more.
Went to the library yesterday. Yes, I was the only one masked. Why do you ask? Anyway got a new library card (2 actually – 1 for my wallet and 1 for my keychain) and a handful of books a couple my “old standby” authors have written in the last 6 years since I was last in the library.
Folks crowdfunding on Xitter and Bluesky aren’t quite in panic mode yet but they’re getting close. Food, meds, winter heat, housing – that’s what I boost daily anyway but a lot of the folks I boost get some benefits and just need a little more to cover the gap between expenses and benefits (or other kind of income). There’s a real difference between trying to raise ~$500 for monthly groceries and ~$2500 for rent, bills, food, & meds. But whatever. I’d best get to it. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
Good morning, 25 and cloudy in Bellingham today. I’m not as sick as I was last week but I’m still coughing, feeling not well, and I’m restless. But activity triggers coughing so I’ve got another quiet day to get through. Sue will be here soon so I’ll wear a mask and stay out of her way so she can clean. The house needs her attention and I’m grateful for her assistance. As always, my best wishes to all.
Good afternoon, meeses! Thursday …
It is 48 degrees in Tucson
with an expected daytime high of 52. Sunny skies are in the forecast. We got a lot of snow on the mountains and rain in the valley. It doesn’t make up for no rain for several months but every little bit helps.
Arizona Governor Hobbs appointed a Black Latina to the Supreme Court for a 10 year term. Justice Maria Elena Cruz is an Arizona native and a graduate of the University of Arizona law school. Reflecting upon her status as the first Hispanic woman and the first Black person on the court, she embraced her heritage and said that it is important that the court reflect all of the races in Arizona, not just one.
I finished a few things this morning and ran some errands and now it is already time for lunch.
See all y’all later!
Friday Meese. Snow and freezing rain in today’s forecast for Kingston
It’s the start of Black History Month tomorrow. Wondering what the racist Dumpster is going to do to sabotage things.
Puerto Rico/Puerto Rican
I wonder when it will finally dawn on people that the Dumpster and his gestapo is using “is brown and speaks Spanish” as their method of “identifying” people who are undocumented immigrants. I hope that the Hispanic people who voted for MAGAtry will eventually regret their vote.
I don’t even want to think about what the white supremacists now in charge of the federal government will do with Black History Month. Maybe they will choose to please their base by defunding and shuttering the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
To that I say…merde! Ordure! It’s too early in the morning to swear in English.
Good morning, meeses! Friday …
It is 37 degrees in Tucson
with an expected daytime high of 63. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The waxing crescent is not visible yet as she is rising into the clear blue morning sky and is not hefty enough yet. I can feel her, though!
It is likely that the only thing that will change the trajectory that the country is on right now is for even more people to die from incompetence and planned starvation of those not in the Favored Demographic. When you embrace a South African and give him power in the government, people should not be surprised when Apartheid is the end result. It was a form of government that prevailed for a long time and only collapsed when the entire world shunned them and it harmed them economically. Who is going to shun the United States and who has the power to harm them economically? I am very disappointed that Democrats are voting in a cabinet filled with destroyers and haters. EPA chief who is a climate denier? Transportation Secretary who voted to eliminate the FAA? What could possibly go wrong? Sadly, the blood will not just be on Republican hands.
I am going to immerse myself into work projects and watching sporting events on TV and try to find slivers of hope to cling to.
See all y’all later!
Good morning. The rain is gone, it raised the lakes a tiny bit but we could use more. Walked & ran this morning, even though my achilles is unhappy. And tfg is tfg’ing; his nominees are obfuscating…..all is normal. But I have a new Snow Patrol song to listen to and romance novels to read, so I can take comfort in that.
Good rainy Friday morning, Moosekind! Sure, and ’tis a decent, soft rain whispering across the landscape, just like Ireland. It’s 44 F. in Ashburn right now and won’t get much higher than that.
Cooked breakfast, now we’re in post-breakfast mode. Regarding the latest from Thing–was there ever a more despicable, hateful person than OrangeFace? Ghengis Khan? Attila the Hun? Vlad the Impaler? I’m trying to think of someone worse. Of course, the mid-20th century offers an example we all know about.
Today I have Nails at 11 a.m.—going to ask for bright red to go with my dance dress and sparkly red hairband—and tonight, rehearsal. The week coming up will be very busy. Dinner last night was fun, after which we all went to the Magic Show, which—to be brutally frank—totally sucked. What a waste of money on our part! Never again.
Dearly stayed home, still thrilled with the new series he’s watching on BritBox.
Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
It’s 47 heading for 50 and sunny at the moment although there are definitely clouds to the northwest apparently moving in. We didn’t quite generate 3 KWHs yesterday but it brought the m-t-d to 201. Whatever we add to that today is that much better.
Yesterday was a bit tense as Basket spent it in hospital. Pain that they thought & treated as gallstones. Whatever it was dissolved or broke up & passed by evening and he was home by 7 pacific time. All’s well and all that. The “outer picture” is not that hopeful. sigh. Rocky night, groggy & slow moving right now. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
Bfitz, I’ve added basket to my prayer list and will be pleased to add yourself, if you wish it. Blessed be.
Good morning, 42 and raining in Bellingham today. Thanks to Sue my house is clean and the laundry is under control. I can breathe easier this morning so I should be able to work at my desk for a few hours this afternoon. I’ve got quite a mess to clean up but I’ll do as much as I can and that will have to be ok. Best wishes to all.
Good morning, meeses! Saturday and spring is in the air …
It is 45 degrees in Tucson
with an expected daytime high of 70. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. Early next week the highs will be getting close to 80 as we get part of the warm front hitting most of the country.
I never expected things to get so bad so quickly. I am trying to figure out the end game of tRump 2.0 during my sleepless night and none of the options are pretty. A mass uprising against the orange dumpster – because of $20 a gallon gas, $10 loaves of bread, and millions of jobs lost – put down by the military with the oligarchs taking over all branches of government and suspending the Constitution? I was alarmed to see that Melon Husk was trying to get the codes that control the Treasury Department’s disbursement system, the computers and procedures that direct trillions of dollars of checks and direct deposits to Social Security recipients, Medicare providers, federal workers, states and people selling goods and services to the government. The guy in charge of the systems is quitting rather than dealing with the chaos about to erupt when Melon does get control. Goddess help us.
I have a project that is too large to get my head around and I need to break it down into bite size pieces so I can get it done. It should be done this weekend so that the people working on the next phases are not delayed.
See all y’all later!
(Shudder) Saw a headline that a whistleblower claims that Melon is running EVERYTHING. “Ruining everything” is more like it.
Good morning. Getting ready for double-workout Saturday; plus groceries and laundry. Two weeks till the 5K. Why did I sign up for that? Anyway, have a good day, y’all.
Good beautiful Saturday morning, Meese! Our high occurred just after midnight, 50 F. Now the temperature is dropping, but the sky is a satisfactory blue with white veils of cloud showing here and there. The other day I drove by a pond with a willow tree that is already turning bright green! Spring must be on the way.
Had a peculiar dream that some dish I was planning didn’t work out, so we decided to make it into potpourri. “Why not scrape up some of the backyard and see how that works?” I asked in the dream. By the time I was awakened with early morning tea, we (I don’t know who the other person was) were looking for dried lemon peel to mix into the whole mess. Apparently it’s good to dream of making potpourri.
This afternoon at 4 p.m. I’ll conduct the Imbolc ritual. We’ll be a very small group, as most of the UU’s are familiar only with solstice rituals. Too bad, because to Witches Samhain is the biggest holiday of the year! However, The Drama Club always seems to be doing a play on October 31 and November 1.
I plan to ask Brigid (known in Scotland as Bride and in England as Brigantia) to help us become the best we can be, to become so fulfilled we can withstand what’s coming.
Will leave you with that thought. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
Good morning Meese. Happy first day of Black History Month
Caribbean Matters posted:
I was relieved to see that Black History Month had not been cancelled by the Orange Dumpster but laughed out loud when he identified Clarence Thomas as a Black American. Don’t tell Clarence, he will be upset – he thinks he is white!!
roflmao!!!
Blessed Imbolc/Candlemass. It’s 44 heading for 57 and overcast. We wrapped up January with a very satisfactory 204.8 KWHs. The best we’ve ever done in February was 320 – but that was in ’16 and there were 29 days to do it in. Last year, another Leap Year, we did 295.6 but that will be exceeding hard to top, even in another Leap Year. The worst we ever did was 125 in ’21. Anything that beats that is the “at least” goal and my “that’s doable” goal is between 225 & 250. We shall see what we shall see.
Basket’s back in hospital. For “observation” – he relapsed yesterday afternoon. As far as I know we’re still thinking it’s gallbladder. Everyone’s prayers/Good Thoughts/candles would be very appreciated.
We’ve got a week of warmer weather. Some of our overnight lows will be in the 50s! Then next Sunday we’ll drop back into more wintry weather. Meanwhile all this cloudiness seems to be keeping me late and groggy. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everbody. {{{Meeses}}}
Good morning, 35 and snowing in Bellingham today. The snow is heavy in the surrounding mountains but isn’t expected to last long at lower levels. I’m still coughing but slowly improving so I’ll continue with light activity and resting. Given the on going coup it’s better for me to stay as busy as I can. Best wishes to all.
