Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 9th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 43 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 66. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

    DON’T FORGET TO MOVE YOUR CLOCKS AHEAD AN HOUR SUNDAY MORNING! Daylight Saving Time begins at 2am Sunday in most locales.

  2. Good morning. Yesterday just got away from me somehow. Every time I looked at the time, a much larger chunk of it had passed than I thought. I never got any exercise, sigh. The music diary went well, though. Surprisingly cold this morning, revising what I’m wearing to church and tomorrow’s work outfit. For now, I’m enjoying the smell of my steeping tea and watching the local news.

  3. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s bright and sunny today, 37 F. at the moment, promising to go up to 59 F. later. Still too windy to go out.

    Darling Daughter sent some coffee, “The Sun Also Rises” from the Berkshires for my birthday next week. We tried it this morning. It was quite nice, I didn’t even need to sweeten it with a few drops of vanilla.

    Laundry and LOTS of reading today! Hope I make it to the gym! Wishing everyone at the Pond a good day.

    P.S. I forgot to gripe about DST. Okay, I hate it. Hate it!

  4. It’s 48 heading for 63 and trying to be sunny. We’ll see if it makes it. Yesterday we generated 5.1 KWHs and the m-t-d at 100 is not on track for 400.

    Last night late I saw a fuzzy roundish bit of light through the clouds that was Grandmother Moon showing she was there. I hate DST. Since retirement I wake up when the ambient light hits a certain point. Prepare meals when the light reaches other points. I am now an hour “behind my time” and will be until DST goes away again. Sigh. But the housekeeping chores are mostly done (I haven’t put on the clean sheets yet) and I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good afternoon, 47 and raining hard now. Our sons were here yesterday, so nice to spend time with them. The family gave me an adjustable stool to use at my floral bench in the garage so we but it together and cleaned up the space so now I can use it again, yay! We also talked through my hopes to reset the patios and as I suspected reality means plans will be adjusted. So I’ll let that project rest for awhile and eventually a solution will evolve. The news continues to horrify me so I’m doing my best to avoid to much exposure. Best wishes to all.

    • The book I just finished, Humankind: A Hopeful History, says that avoiding the news is healthy because it focuses on the horrible when reality is that there is so much more good out there. So you are doing the right thing.

  6. Monday Meese. 35 here going up to 52! Spring is here it seems.
    Spent most of the day yesterday watching women’s college basketball division championships, and my team, the SC Gamecocks won theirs (the toughest division, the SEC) Now on to March Madness. (Jan are you filling out brackets?)

    • Congratulations to your South Carolina team beating the #1 team in the nation!

      If by “filling out brackets” do you mean guessing who will win? No way! I do enjoy filling in the brackets as I watch the tournament games being played. My Arizona Wildcats lost their first game in the Big XII tournament and possibly their hopes for one of the “and 4” spots. I hope that if they miss out, they choose to be in the WBIT tournament. That tournament can be a lot of fun and I would guess that with their fan base, it would be well attended here in Tucson.

  7. Good morning. Glad I hadn’t put my cold weather stuff away yet. Okay, where most of y’all are, 42 is probably normal but that’s cold for Austin. Anyway, happy Monday.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 46 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 77. Sunny skies are in the forecast. At about 2:45 yesterday afternoon, we watched the waxing moon clear the mountaintops. We have our fingers crossed that we will have clear skies on the 13th when she will be full and rise in the east over the mountains around 7pm. The forecast calls for clouds and rain that day. :(

    I have many things planned for today and none of them are “doom scroll the news.” I am working to get business transactions completed before the government shuts down and throws everything into limbo. Democratic Leader Jeffries has signaled that he won’t bail out Pastor Mike Johnson’s ass without huge concessions. I hope he realizes that Republican electeds are not to be trusted – they essentially turned over the government that they are in charge of to a white supremacist oligarch who is bent on destroying our democracy. What can they possibly “deal away” when the chips in play are not even theirs?

    See all y’all later!

  9. It’s 48 heading for 73 and sunny. At least at the moment. Yesterday we generated 17.2 KWHs and the m-t-d at 117.5 while not on track is gaining again.

    It’s going to be too warm for a fire until a lot later than I’m going to light it today but I need to do laundry this week and the rest of the week will be even warmer. I hate DST. I’d be groggy anyway – took some generic Nyquil in the wee small hours so I could get some sleep – but now I’m both groggy AND an hour later than I want to be getting online. Oh well. The sun will catch up to the clock in about 6 weeks. (As in dawn will be where it was when the clocks were changed.) Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good morning, 42 and cloudy in Bellingham today. I see the dentist this afternoon for a small filling and then I finally see the oral surgeon tomorrow for the throbbing tooth…been a long wait with a lot of discomfort :( but oh well. Time to get ready to go. As always my best wishes to all.

  12. Good morning. Slow start today, savoring my wfh while I still have it. Gov. Abbott said it should end but hasn’t given specific instructions, my agency management is slow-walking it trying to keep it if possible. (Why fix something that isn’t broken? If wfh wasn’t working wouldn’t the agencies have called people back on their own?)

    • Management isn’t happy unless it can SEE you sitting at your workstation.

      I used to sit at mine, fast asleep with my eyes open, after lunch. The time after lunch is meant for sleeping. That’s why I retired early, so I could take a nap after lunch, and look at me now! 106 and still going strong!

  13. Good gorgeous Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s 42 F. in Ashburn, on its way up to 74 F! Wow! I’d wear Bermudas to the barbershop this morning if my legs were already tanned, but they’re not, so there goes that.

    Last night, like our BlogGoddess Jan, I saw the waxing moon and greatly enjoyed the sight. Held up Skyview on my phone to the heavens and saw a crouching lion near the Moon. Isn’t that interesting! I must look and look, because naturally on Friday, when She will be full, there will be clouds and showers, or so they allege. The March full moon is called “the Worm Moon” because earthworms are beginning to emerge. I know we should rejoice at the sight of the squirmy darlings, but I don’t like thinking about worms. In history class, did you ever hear about the Diet of Worms? UGH.

    Sunday night was the night from HELL because I couldn’t get comfortable, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t do much of anything, so basically stayed awake and read. I did pull myself together sufficiently on Monday to go to the gym, so that was good. I even stayed awake during a 2-hour Drama Club Board meeting yesterday afternoon.

    Last night’s Rehearsal was a music rehearsal, during which we non-singers quietly mouthed the words of the song. As S. pointed out during the Board meeting, the music in “Crazy for You” is NOT easy to sing. Glad she said it. If there must be a musical, let it be by Rodgers and Hammerstein—they knew what they were doing.

    Today, a visit to the barbershop, a meeting about the 2026 reservations of the theater for the Drama Club, and an evening of Irish music. Hope he sings something I can recognize.

    Today is my last day of being 80! Whaddaya know! Must start opening some of the prezzies that have arrived, because tomorrow I won’t have time. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Aji’s people call this one “Snowcrust Moon”. (In her various writings she’s mourning that there’s no longer any snowcrust for the Snowcrust Moon to shine on.)

  14. It’s 65 already heading for 80 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 17.2 KWHs and the m-t-d at 134.77 isn’t on track but is gaining. With luck we might even catch up before the clouds move in and drop us back again.

    I saw the moon just before dark – I was outside dealing with the firewood (for some reason the stack fell over yesterday afternoon) and there she was. Lovely as always. We’re slated for definitely clouds and maybe rain when she’s supposed to be full. sigh.

    Running late. I hate DST. Best be about my boosting. And hope all three of my venues actually work this morning. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 66 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 73. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I did see the moon last night but very very high in the sky. I sounds like I will have to stay up until 9:30pm to see the start of the eclipse on Thursday night. I am not sure I can do that but I will keep an open mind.

    I don’t have time to stay and visit as I had a too busy morning and I need to tidy up my desktop and then shut down for my morning walk. I was glad to see my senator Mark Kelly push back on the Felon’s and the Melon’s Ukraine bullcrap. I will stand with Europe and democracy as well.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good morning. A state House committee just wrapped up a hearing from yesterday morning on school vouchers — 23 hours. The House and Senate have different bills, no telling what they’ll end up passing. Anyway, hi. Looking forward to my other peaceful, productive workday (also known as wfh).

  17. Wednesday Meese. 36 here in Kingston going up to 46 with rain

    • On a sad note, Marisa Moseley the head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers Women’s Basketball Team, resigned this past week. She was 4 years into her 5 year contract and had been making some progress until the boys who run the Big Ten expanded their conference to make their football teams more popular and did not pay any attention to what the realignment would do to women’s sports. They added USC, UCLA, Washington and Oregon and the horrible travel schedule that entailed. They could not be bothered to even include all the womens teams in the conference tournament, a clear sign that they hoped that some schools would simply drop women’s college basketball – heck, maybe all womens sports, then they could expand the football rosters to 200 players! At a school like Wisconsin, where unlike Ohio State you need to actually attend classes and have good grades, it was a challenge traveling to the west coast. In any event, I hope she lands somewhere where she can be happy (there were some attacks on her that were bogus but which must have hurt) and that her good players, hobbled by having teammates who insisted on playing their full 5 years even though they were not very good, find homes at the other end of the transfer portal.

      I am personally sad because I don’t see how the program survives and it was a part of my life for over 30 years. I remember driving to a wayside halfway between Milwaukee and Madison so that I could pick up the radio broadcast of the first time they were in the NCAA tournament back in the 90s, watching them play and win the WNIT in 2000 and the hoisting the banner ceremony. Many of those games were played in the Wisconsin Field House, a grand old auditorium that used to be the home of the basketball teams until they built a big steel and glass facility. I had season tickets until the football boys in charge of the athletic department aimed a wrecking ball at the program and could not be bothered to understand what type of coach was needed to be successful (NOT a D3 “lets play with 5 guards” person) and started a 20 year decline. When attendance dropped, they closed the upper deck for women’s basketball games where I had season ticket seats right on the railing at mid-court; I did not want to change to inner seats on the lower deck so cancelled them.

      I am glad that I have the Arizona Wildcats now and their pretty good (and fun to watch) team to mitigate the pain but I will never not be sad about what has happened to the program I loved.

  18. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 48 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 68. It was raining when I got up and the wash was running, meaning that it was a pretty heavy downpour. The forecast today is mostly sunny. It is in the 20s on Mount Lemmon so they will have gotten snow.

    Today will be a good test for Social Security deposits – the first deposit day since the South African white supremacist running our government made it clear to everyone that his target is to eliminate Social Security. I am not convinced that Republican electeds would consider that a bunch of old people turned out of their homes and left to starve would be enough to break the hold that their cult leader has on them. It is really a terrible situation that we are in with a governing party that hates government so much that it wants to destroy it and walk away from the chaos that ensues.

    I had a too busy two days and I have many scraps of paper on my desk that need to be organized into a to-do list that makes sense. There are some hard deadlines coming up on March 15th and I would like to get them finished well before the deadline in case there are problems – plus March 15th is a Saturday and there may be little technical support if I get stuck.

    See all y’all later!

  19. It’s 65 heading for 80 and sunny. At the moment. Yesterday we generated 17.1 KWHs and the m-t-d at 151.7 while not on track could catch up today. We shall see.

    I saw the moon just before full dark yesterday evening. Surprisingly had a good enough night’s sleep I didn’t see her once she’d moved far enough west to see her from my bedroom window. But I knew she would and it was a relatively clear night so I left my curtains open so the light would make its way across my bed while I slept.

    I don’t know anyone who gets their Social Security today (that I know of) but I guess if folks don’t it’ll be all over social media. Serious hopes/prayers that it comes. Meanwhile I’d best get started on my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
