Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 16th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. The high was 67 just after midnight. It’s 62 now and will drop throughout the day. It’s sunny at the moment but the clouds are supposed to move in before noon. sigh. Yesterday we generated 14 KWHs, neither gained nor lost, and the m-t-d at 251.1 is just a hair short of being on track.

    My Social Security came in. So I’m secure if not social for another month. I think I may go back to using cash at all the local stores. Yes, it’s a slightly higher infection risk but at this point with nobody masking (except me) and all the shields and the like gone, it’s not that much more of a risk. The benefit being that it’s paid now – not in next month’s credit card statement. A month that I might not get my Social Security.

    With the govt departments acting as if DOGE and EM were actual authorized by law entities I keep feeling like I’m in a weird fantasy-role game where people are obeying in their real lives the orders of the game dictator. At least this is illegal and reversible, even if it takes a while and does a whole lot of damage to peoples lives and the economy until it’s reversed. If the current administration had gone “through channels” and asked the R-controlled Congress to create DOGE and approve EM’s appointment, it would be law and quite possibly undoable.

    Anyway, need to get milk today but that’ll be later. Now off to my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  2. Good morning, 41 and raining in Bellingham today. I like my haircut, but I was to tired to do anything after so came home for lunch, a long nap, then dinner and early to bed. So apparently one activity away from home is best for me now. Oh well, limited activity is better than none. So today I hope to go to Joes Garden and buy 5 primroses for 2 pots by our back entry. Best wishes to all.

  3. Good afternoon, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 64 degrees and sunny in Tucson 🌵 but a little windy. I got some work done this morning then had to run some errands and decided to take it easy. I am not sleeping as well as I should, probably because of the disturbance in the force.

    I am still looking for some permanent good news, not just “judge blocks” headlines with no resolution. I was glad they restored the DOD Jackie Robinson and Navajo code talkers and the Enola Freaking Gay web pages but, really, people should be fired for that bullsh*t. Until MAGAt heads start rolling, nothing has changed.

    See all y’all tomorrow.

  5. Good morning, meeses! Thursday and Spring Equinox

    It is 46 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 75. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It looks like the cool spell is done and peering ahead I see some 90s – too soon! I saw the moonlight this morning but no moon; she is a bit too far to the south.

    March Madness started yesterday with a lot of Not Very Good basketball. My home team, the Arizona Wildcats, plays tonight and I can’t go to night games because it is past my bedtime. I am hoping that they win and can play again on Sunday afternoon. In any event, all the games are on TV so I will see a lot of good and Not Very Good basketball for the next month.

    I guess we are going to find out pretty soon if we are a nation of laws or a nation of tRump as the Felon’s “Justice” Department seems poised to defy court orders and snatch people off the street, put them on planes and send them to foreign countries without due process. John Roberts complaining about the words people use is so quaint – he set in motion the very thing we are seeing when he declared a president to be above the law. Nice work. I hope the history books written in free countries vilify him and his cohorts.

    Busy morning here. See all y’all later!

  6. Good morning. In from my walk, glad we still have mornings cool enough for long sleeves. Spent much of last evening trying to wrap my head around an astronomy paper about dark energy. I should probably wait for the Scientific American version, wish there were still new episodes of How the Universe Works. Anyway, here in the office, preparing for a day of loudness & people.

  7. Good Thursday moaning, Meese! What are we moaning about today? Why, this morning so far has been full of first-world troubles. I have to straighten out a mess with the credit card company, tidy up my office, and try to forget the humiliation I experienced yesterday evening of blanking out on my lines when we rehearsed Scene 1. How many times have I looked at those lines? About a hundred?

    Meanwhile, it’s a mixed sort of day, 51 F at the moment, going up to the 60’s. Rain is expected tonight, but we all know what that means—no rain.

    I can’t believe we are living in a land of such utter lawlessness. I refuse to feel sorry for the people who voted for The Felon. They knew what he was. In the meantime, innocent people, including citizens, are being picked up off the streets and stuffed into concentration camps. That’s what they are. Cholesterol Gods, can you not take care of The Felon? And why not have the Melon take a ride in one of his own space ships? They have a habit of blowing up.

    You can see I’m in a bad mood. I’d hoped the cold would be gone by now, but alas, no. However, I’m wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  8. It’s 34 heading for 55 and trying to be sunny but not making it so far. Yesterday we generated 6.4 KWHs and the m-t-d at 258 lost ground.

    Happy Ostara/Equinox. The light is coming back. So’s warmer weather. Too early. Most of the flowering trees, including the fruiting ones, did/are doing a half-hearted job of flowering this year. They’re already leafing out. The nut bushes and trees just started leafing yesterday. And of course the invasive honeysuckle’s been leafing out for over a week, almost 2 at this point. So. Things like the oaks haven’t started yet but almost everything else has. And with the warmth comes the bugs. sigh.

    I caught a glimpse of the moon this morning when I got up before she dropped behind some densely branched if not yet densely leafed trees. That was nice. Now to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  9. Good morning, 41, with wind and rain showers in Bellingham today. Reading the news this morning has made me so grumpy I forgot it’s the first day of spring. So I’m going to try to reset my mood and try to focus on nature today. Bri will be back to help me with the garden, Marcus will be here to prune the hedge next week, Ron has veggie starts growing, I have pansy planting plan, etc. So as best I can I want to stay focused on my small world today. Best wishes to all.

  10. Friday Meese. 44 here in Kingston

  11. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 46 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 77. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I saw the moon this morning by craning my neck out over the edge of the deck overhang. The light is nearly half gone! My, how time flies.

    The Arizona Wildcats Women’s Basketball team lost in their first round WBIT game. They were without their starting point guard (whose injury has ended her season) but still kept it competitive until they gave up the lead in the last minute and could not get off their final shot as time ran out. They would not have gone much further with a makeshift lineup but they certainly have no reason to hang their heads. They are one of the youngest teams in the Power 4 conferences and will only get better if they can stay together for next year.

    It sounds like this past week’s Social Security payment may be the last. Apparently the judge who ruled that the DOGE boys can’t be mucking around in the Social Security Administration’s private files gave the acting head of the agency a sad and he has declared that they are simply going to have to shut down the agency if they can’t do whatever the hell they want with our private information. I am going to need to calculate how long I can live without my SSA deposit before I have to start cashing in CDs. Bastids. I am also going to have to find out where my MAGAt Congresscritter’s office is and go picket it. His gauzy ads during the 2024 election showed him looking kindly at the olds who were glad to hear him say that he would “protect Social Security and Medicare” – not realizing that he was actually sizing them up to use their dead bodies as kindling for the fireplaces in the mansion he wants to own purchased with Musk PAC money. Bastid.

    It is finally Friday and my time will be my own for the next couple of days. I have some sporting events to watch on TV today and I have to decide how little I can get away with of actual work. I have at least two emails I need to send out setting up weekend projects.

    See all y’all later!

  12. It’s 51 heading for 68 today. It was sunny when I got up but clouds are moving in. Yesterday we hit the highest thus far this year for generation – 20.3 KWHS – and the m-t-d at 278.78 gained a chunk.

    I couldn’t get to sleep last night until after midnight but I made up for it by sleeping until after 8. A nice sunny break in the clouds woke me up. But it’s gone now. Slow and creaky today. Although we probably won’t get the promised rain. The lack of rain is causing a shortage in spring flowers. Sigh. Oh well. I’d best be about my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good morning, 41 and cloudy in Bellingham today. If I stay on task the last of Christmas will finally be put away today, yay! It’s fun to use the table linens but not so fun to wash and iron them after. Time to find some coffee, play some solitaire, and then decide what to do with my day. Best wishes to all.

  14. Good overcast Saturday morning, Meese! It’s 47 F., allegedly going up to 64 F. Yesterday was brilliantly sunny, but the cold, ice-edged wind was so sharp I had to wear my parka and mittens. Hope we get some showers today, it rained only briefly Thursday night.

    Yesterday I was consumed by errands and shopping. Heard two things that horrified me—Melon was given a classified briefing on China at the Pentagon! Uh, I don’t recall voting for him. And this morning, the sheety multimillionaire said that people won’t miss their Social Security check if SSA skips a payment. WHAT? WTAF? Bloody hell.

    The Shred Truck is finally coming, so I have to hasten to get ready for the day. I want to go to the gym too, which I haven’t done for a couple of days. Rehearsal last night went better than Wednesday night. At least I only blanked out on one line. Our Director is really, really, good!

    This afternoon I’m going to a friend’s place to watch “The Brutalist.” Don’t know what it’s about but if it’s really scary I might have to ask her to turn it off.

    I can’t believe what they’re about to do to our Social. Are we going to end up selling apples in the street?

    I’m going to live in my little dream world here as long as I can. Wishing all at the Pond a good day. Not sure what to wish on the Melon, the Felon, and their minions, as according to the Law of Threefold Return, it’ll come back on me three times. See you later!

    • The scariest thing about what the Richie Rich’s discussion about our Social Security is that they are setting things up to try to scare us into not complaining if we don’t get a check. Billionaire Howard Lutnick, running the Commerce Department, said that his 94 year old mother-in-law would never complain about not getting her check and that anyone who does complain is likely a fraudster and should be investigated! JHC! A billionaire’s mother in law is not likely counting on her Social Security check to pay for groceries or rent like most of us – if she is, he is a bigger ahole than he appears to be on TV. I have some cash reserves but if I miss more than one check, I am going to be in trouble, like about nearly half of all Social Security recipients. And I am not going to sit quietly and take it – I am going to park my ass in front of my MAGAt congressman’s Tucson office with a sign saying “where’s my check?”. He won’t care, he is a sociopath who wants to deport brown people even though he came into America as a small child from Mexico and got citizenship when his father lied and used a church group to bypass the citizenship wait. Bastid.

  15. Good morning. A relatively lazy Saturday: laundry, food prep, kickboxing, more cooking…..but all on my schedule and if it doesn’t happen, that’s okay. Watching local news – fire danger is merely elevated, not extreme like last week. Anyway, happy to be just sitting.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 52 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 81. Sunny skies are in the forecast. This morning I saw the moon and heard owls whoing at each other from trees on the greenspace. Nice way to start the day!

    My Badger Women’s Hockey Team won their semifinal game and will play for the championship on Sunday against the team that beat them 1-0 in the championship last year, the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Badgers only lost two games this year and one of them was to the Buckeyes so this will not be a walk in the park (skate in the park?). We are going for our 8th National Championship to add to our record 7 championships wins. We also have three players up for the Patty Kazmaier Award which is given to the best women’s hockey player in the country. Go Badgers!

    I spent time yesterday gathering notes for this weekend’s projects and I am hoping to make progress on them. The key is to work on them early before it gets busy here and while I have some brain left. That window of time in the morning gets a little shorter every year. :)

    See all y’all later!

  17. It’s 50 heading for 73 and sunny at the moment. We generated 18 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d at 296.4 is on track and gaining. I wish I could say the same for out country.

    All I can do about Social Security is what I’m doing. Call my deplorable Congresscritters and tell them to protect it. Or rather tell their staffers whenever I reach a human being to tell them to protect it – and leave voicemails the rest of the time. Not that they care. They’re Rs after all. But it’s what I can do so I do it. Otherwise, I boost folks needs. Which I’d best get to. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses]]]
