Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 23rd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 54 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 79. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Good morning. Relaxing for a bit, enjoying the smell of my steeping tea. Cooking & laundry yesterday; today is just church and getting ready for the week. There was a protest at the Tesla dealership here, well-received. I wonder if people are quitting their jobs there?

  3. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s an acceptable morning here, with a kind of gray-blue sky and weak sunshine. Currently it’s 39 F. in Ashburned, going up to 59 F. or something. Imaginary rain is predicted some time or other.

Yesterday, after gym and lunch, I went to a friend’s flat to watch “The Brutalist,” which she’d called up on Netflix. It was MUCH too long, and made even longer because we kept stopping to ask each other, “Whatinell just happened?” I did NOT appreciate the sex scenes or the constant darkness and shadows. Adrian Brody, of course, was marvelous and fully deserves the Oscar for Best Actor.

Can’t bear to look at the news. Apparently Russian drones are hitting Kyiv. Because of the long time away from home yesterday I’m behind on everything. I’ve made a list, though, and hope to catch up.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond! Haven’t seen the Moon at ALL.

  4. It’s 65 heading for 70 and overcast. (No, we’re not going to get the much needed rain, just clouds.) Yesterday we generated 15.7 KWHs. The m-t-d at 312.12 gained a little more. Which is just as well because I’m pretty sure we’ll lose it all today and be off track again by sundown. sigh.

Restless night. The evil ones and their plans/threats to steal Social Security is most upsetting. I’ve at least got a little saved back and will be OK for a few months. Over a year if the Market doesn’t tank and take my TIAA with it. But folks on Disability cannot have anything saved back. By law. They’d lose their Disability if they did. And folks who’ve been hanging on at bad/stressful jobs by their teeth and toenails trying to make it to full retirement. . . The evil ones don’t care of course. Those of us who live on Social Security, whether retirement or disability, are in the bottom 20 percentile. Those hoping to retire on it are in the bottom 40 percentile (at most). And the ones on top are too purely arrogant and stupid to know that you destroy the bottom of the pyramid, the top goes with it. sigh.

    Oh well. Household chores done. Time to get to my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good morning, 48 and raining in Bellingham. Marcus will be here to prune the laurel hedge tomorrow morning so I’m hoping for light rain because I want to work with him re removing whole branches and trimming the rest to allow more light to reach the new growth. Bri will be here too so with her help the biggest garden project for this year will be done, yay! I made the plans for this before the felon and his evil minions’ started messing with SS so who knows what will happen next year. Oh well, life goes on and hedges grow regardless so one day at a time with a wary eye on the future is all I can do. As always, my best wishes to all.

  6. Monday Meese. A rainy Monday here in Kingston. Happy to see daffodils blooming.

  7. Good morning. Still haven’t taken any pictures of wildflowers, though they say on the news that there are some out there. Did my walk/run, middle 16 minutes was running, .65 mi. Monday, sigh.

  8. Good gray Monday morning, Moosekind. Feeling down this morning with first-world problems. It was supposed to rain after sunset last night: it did not. It is supposed to rain all morning: so far, not a drop. Some say that our lack of rain in Ashburger is owing to the huge number of server farms that surround us. Don’t know if this is true or not.

Also, I will be attending a memorial service this morning for a dear woman who lived in this building. One lives in the same community for years, becomes fond of people, and then—poof! One day they just aren’t there.
Finally, the federal refund we were supposed to receive today has been delayed. They “need more information” and will mail us about this. Dear Goddess. The mail is messed up too.

Aside from the memorial service, nothing on today but the usual afternoon activities. Meeting another actor after dinner to practice our lines. It’s so much easier to do it with another person than alone.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  9. It’s 48 heading for 74 and sunny. Yesterday we got 9.12 KWHs and yes, the m-t-d at 321.21 is no longer on track. Sigh. My reporting widget just got a brand new format, without warning, that totally sucks. And I’m not even sure any longer how to get in touch with the company to see if I can get the old format back.

It’s too cool to do the laundry in the morning and hang it out but too warm to (comfortably) have a fire in the afternoon/evening to hang it in the house. But, probably with the windows and maybe the carport door open, I’m going to do it anyway because the laundry needs to be done this week and it’s not going to get any cooler again before next week.

Treated myself to my annual Tex-Mex enchilada plate yesterday. With the chips it was probably 2x if not 3x my usual daily calorie load but unlikely to have reached my daily protein goal. But every once in a very great while my body craves an overload of carbs and fat. Fortunately it is only once in a very great while. My gall bladder would start saying very nasty things to me if I did it more often.

    Today I need to call my congresscritters again, as useless as that will be, and the plumber. At least calling the plumber will be useful. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 79 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 86. Sunny skies are in the forecast. We turned off the heat yesterday but will see how long we can resist turning on the air conditioning. Yesterday we used a fan to move the air around and we are still cool enough in the mornings that we can open doors and windows early and keep things cool. I am not ready for the 90s. No moon sighting this morning. I was surprised to see that she will be new on Saturday; seems like she was just full!

My Badger Women’s Hockey team won the National Championship in dramatic fashion – with a last second penalty goal to tie the game and send it into overtime and then an overtime win. I am going to watch the last 5 minutes of the game again later this morning.

I have to close some files I have open and then shut down my computer – I am tired of working!

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good morning. We got rain over the weekend, and some later this week, so that will help the wildflowers. Got to work on the AIDS Ride fundraising. But first, wfh day.

  12. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 63 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 91. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. The moon was not up when I checked earlier but she is now – a pretty waning crescent over the southern end of the mountains.

I am going to go news light again. Yesterday was a particularly awful day for people who had hoped to survive in tRump’s America. The Post Office will close meaning that millions will have no secure way to vote, World War III is going to be started and mismanaged by the worst of the worst and a Wall Street banker is going to be put in charge of the Social Security trust fund. I can’t survive without Social Security – my entire retirement is based on it – and I have no idea what happens next. If we can’t vote the bums out, we can’t fix it. And if the bums wreck enough things that can’t be repaired, it won’t matter much.

In the meantime, I have work projects that need to be done and my freaking air conditioning, for the third summer in a row, is not working. They need to replace it, not just “fix” it this time.

    See all y’all later!

  13. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s 50 F. in Ashburned under a blue sky with little streaks of white cloud here and there. Imaginary rain is predicted in three hours. It will of course be imaginary. The newspooper reported yesterday that our area has been treated to more severe winds than we’ve had in years. I did wonder about that.

Daffodils, Dee? I must go for a walk and see whether the forsythia is out. Feeling cross because of no fed refund (I was counting on it to see us through if we don’t get our Social in April), cross because I somehow gained 4 ounces since yesterday, and cross because I can’t find an item of my costume that I need to wear for the costume parade tomorrow night. First-world problems, all.

My fellow actor and I did practice our lines last night. She then told me something I dreaded to know: my hearing is getting worse. Today I will call the audiologist who visits here every Tuesday and ask for a test. (Hearing tests are BEYOND tedious.) She told me Costco hearing aids are affordable and good enough for moderate hearing loss. For severe loss, however, they’re apparently not so good.

Enough about my first-world worries. Drones aren’t bombing our apartment and I’m not in the hospital with some ghastly illness. Speaking of that, the memorial service I attended yesterday was a first-class affair, just like the departed lady who planned it. Real china with a beautiful pattern, not paper plates. White-gloved servitors handing round flutes of something that looked like kir. Of course, I couldn’t have any of that, so I availed myself of a cup of Earl Grey. Cucumber sandwiches, smoked salmon sandwiches, egg salad on croissants, miniature desserts, and chocolates. The service lasted exactly one hour.

My actor friend whispered, “When I go, it’ll be coffee and cookies. I can’t afford anything like this.”

So, dear GODDESS, “her emails”! The amazing incompetence of the bunch of drunks and druggies running the country is frightening! I’ll be in rehearsal Friday night but I’ll get Dearly to tape “Washington Week” for me. I don’t usually pay much attention to that show because creeps like Peter Baker frequently appear as guests, but mah Goddess!

We coulda had Hillary. We coulda had Kamala. But the men (and some Caryatids) hate women too much to ever vote for one of us for president.

The Greenlanders are planning an icy reception for Usha and whatever hack is accompanying her. I suppose if they forbade the plane to land, Melon would declare war.

Time for me to stop running my mouth and get ready for the day. I remembered all 12 people in my prayers this morning, 5 men and 7 women. Incidentally, I saw one of the men yesterday at the memorial service. I was surprised. I had heard from his neighbor that he had no energy and looked “very old”—he who was once voted the “most handsome man in our building.” But there he was, all dressed up in a suit and tie, looking as handsome as ever. He thanked me for the “we miss you” card I left on his hallway shelf.

Wishing a GOOD day for Ukraine, CANADA, Greenland, and everyone in the USA except the evil ones.

    • I hope no one in Greenland meets with Vance’s wife. She deserves no special respect and should be embarrassed to be associated with someone (her husband) who pals around with people who despise her and her Indian American children. Why do people embrace and enable those who hate their own people?

  14. It’s 57 heading for 76 and sunny so far. Yesterday we generated 17.2 KWHs and are back on track with 338.29 m-t-d. Hopefully we’ll gain some more ground before the definitely clouds and maybe rain moves in.

    The response to being ordered to do something unconstitutional – like shut down USPS – should be “no” and go on as usual. But as will all the other illegal stuff twitler & EM/DOGE are ordering I’m sure people will just do as they’re told and complain about it. The one thing the Founders never envisioned was a Congress that would willingly rush to abdicate its authority to a “king”. They didn’t like giving as much authority as they did to the president precisely because they’d had kings and didn’t like them. Sigh. Oh well. What I can do right now is boost folks. So I’d best be about that. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  15. Good morning. Didn’t get any exercise yesterday but I did make appointments for annual physical and bloodwork prior to that, so positive healthy stuff. Am scheduled to log off early today so I’ll make another try at exercise. Trying to not listen to national news, it’s bad for my blood pressure.

  16. Wednesday Meese. Nippy 28 here this morning.

Mass demonstration in Rincón against logging. The governor says the project “can’t be stopped,” and the people simply respond.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 66 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 88. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. Yesterday it got to the mid-90s but the morning low kept the apartment cool enough to survive but it was difficult to sleep. The a/c guy came by, diagnosed a failed compressor and now the landlord needs to approve the expense for a new a/c and we should get it installed by the end of the week. I am not looking forward to living with a portable a/c for the next few days but it is nice to have the option. This a/c unit has broken down every summer that I have been here, been patched and declared good to go. Now it is finally “going” – out the door, to be replaced by something that will hopefully last for as long as I live here.

I am still going news light. My women’s basketball “follows” are in the state of flux. The Wisconsin team’s coach resigned at the end of the season and now has a new coach, Robin Pingeton, the former coach of Missouri who resigned at the end of her season. I wish her luck but two of the Badgers starting players entered the portal so she will have to start from scratch. The boys in Madison got their generic “Midwestern values” white person coach but at least they selected a woman so I give them credit for that. The Arizona Wildcats lost there three top scorers (all sophomores) to the portal on Monday and Tuesday so the coach there, Adia Barnes, will have a rebuilding job as well. Her contract is up for renewal in a very scary time for universities so who knows what the future will bring. Busy time of the year for Women’s College Hoops.

I have a few accounting projects to get done this morning so I best get to it. I had to pay a bill online and I laughed out loud when I saw the new notation at the top of my online banking portal “FDIC-Insured – Backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Government.” How quaint! I wonder if this is wishful thinking on the part of my bank.

    See all y’all later!

  18. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind1 Here in Ashburned we have 44 F., flawless blue skies, and WIND! Y’all are no doubt tired of hearing me moan about the wind and the lack of rain. Every time they mention showers, it’s as if they’re invoking an opposition spell.

But enough of this meteorological chitchat. Question: has Gubernator Abbott been governor forever and ever, world without end? It certainly seems that way. Dearly is going to tape “Washington Week” for me Friday night because I’ll be in rehearsal. I imagine the host, Jeff Goldberg, will have plenty to say!

I am worried sick about Social Security. It’s half our income. If we don’t get our usual deposits in April, I’m going to have cat conniptions.

Have to run to Costco the minute they open to get my hearing aids reconnected. I don’t know how to do that. I think the disconnection happens when the iPhone tiresomely updates itself. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we have a beautiful morning, just 44 F., but with WIND. We have Costume Parade tonight for Scenes 6-9 of the play.

Gotta run. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond! May the fleas of a thousand pariah dogs infest the innermost crevices of the Evil Ones, and may the fearsome Djinn haunt their horrid dreams at night.
